Auto-exposure / auto levels on import

Is there a way to invoke autoexposure and/or autolevels while importing? Alternatively, can you autoexpose multiple images without clicking on each one individually?
Cliff

Are you working with images from different cameras or different file types from the one camera?

  • Auto Exposure/Auto Enhance order

There are times when I want to use "Auto Exposure" or "Auto Enhance" to improve the image.
When I want to use both adjustments for an image, does it matter which I apply first, second?
I looked for a list of adjustments by order (which adjustment to apply first, second, third, etc)  and I could not find one.

It does not.  The order in which adjustments are applied is fixed.  The order in which you make them has no bearing on the final Image.  (If the adjustments are all the same, the final Images will be identical.)
This should be easy to verify yourself.  Create two versions from the same Original, make the same adjustments but in different orders, and compare them.

  • Auto Exposure and Auto Levels

I have yet to figure out if it is possible to apply both auto exposure and levels to multiple images, and I do not mean lifting and stamping the same settings. If not this is #1 on my wish list.

I initially thought this was a glaring omission from the beginning. However, these auto functions have such unpredictable effects on images that they really do need individual application and review anyway. Not being able to batch apply them just enforces good practice going image by image so that one doesn't wind up with a bunch of badly adjusted images. Adjusting similar images with lift and stamp is more prudent though deserving of individual review as well.

  • Stamp 'Auto exposure' not working?

    Hello,
I've about 100 photo's. All taken under the same conditions.
    I want to:
         - auto white balance
         - auto exposure
         - auto enhance
    them.
So I did this to the first photo, then lifted metadata & adjustments, highlighted Adjustments, selected photo's no. 2 until the last one and stamped them.
Aperture was a while busy processing.
After processing was complete, I discovered that the 'auto exposure' hadn't been applied (or false applied?) to several (probably all) photo's.
The photo's were clearly over-exposed. So I stamped some of them again, one by one, to if anything would change but no, nothing changed.
However, upon selecting a single photo and clicking 'Exposure->Auto' in the Adjustments tab, the Exposure was adjusted (example: from 1,24 to 0,13).
In the online help I cannot find anything that says that you can't stamp 'auto exposure' or that you can't stamp several adjustments at once.
Any idea why this isn't working (correctly) and how to solve it?
Checking 100 photo's one by one seems a bit silly to do . . .
I'm using Aperture 3.4.5 on a MacBook Pro (early 2011 model) with OS X 10.8.4, and no outstanding updates.
    Kind regards,
    emeu1

I can duplicate what you are seeing. The problem shows up depending on the order you apply the adjustments to the first image.
    1. First apply auto-exposure, then apply auto-enhance. Lift and stamp the adjustments. The auto-exposure adjustment is NOT applied to the selected images.
    2. Now switch the order... first apply auto-enhance, then apply auto-exposure. Lift and stamp the adjustments. The auto-exposure adjustment is applied to the selected images.
So it would appear that stamping auto-adjustments fails depending on the order the adjustments were originally applied, at least when auto-enhance is included.
The auto-exposure adjustment does show up in the lift-and-stamp HUDs, but isn't being applied.
    Some other notes...
Auto-enhance never seems to adjust exposure; it uses a combination of other adjustments, sometimes not always for the better.
Auto white balance gets thrown into auto-enhance, so I didn't include it when testing.
This smells like a bug to me, and I'm going to report it as such. You should do the same if you agree.
One more reason I don't like the whole lift & stamp approach to applying adjustments to multiple images. Blah!

  • Auto levels on import preset

I tried a search to see how you can get AP3 to do an "auto levels" adjustment during import, but I am not sure how to do it. If I do an "auto" adjust on an image and then create a preset, does AP3 apply the levels based on that particular file used, or will it actually look at each file individually and make the correct adjustment for each file during the import? Or is there a different way to correctly apply auto levels during import?
    Thanks in advance.

this is fairly easy. the only thing you have to do is create an adjustment preset to do just that.
    steps:
1-click on an image and go to the Adjustments tab
2-apply auto-levels on that image (and nothing else)
3-in the Presets drop box, choose Save as Preset (Aperture is intelligent enough to remember you've applied the Auto-levels)
4-in the preset management box, give it some name
5-on following imports, just apply this preset to your images on import and voilà.

  • No keyboard shortcut possible for auto exposure?

I wanted to use the command editor to add a keyboard shortcut for auto exposure, but did not see anything for auto exposure in the list of available commands:
that seems an unfortunate design decision...
or am I missing something: is it possible to make a keyboard shortcut for this?
(Ditto for the 2 auto levels commands)

I too found the Auto Exposure useless at first, however once you start to understand how it works, it's a real timesaver.
I've found that it works quite similar to the AE in a camera. In otherwords, it's easily tricked by lots of black or lots of white; in such case you're better off setting it manually (just like you'd compensate in a camera).
Where the AE function really comes in useful is to shift (center?) the histogram for the average image. This is quite important for many adjustments such as Contrast which behaves differently at various exposures. AE usually gets the image into the ballpark for consistent results when using adjustments.

  • Auto Exposure Button Unavailable

I am working through the pro training series and I am currently playing with Auto Exposure, it works fine with the provided images, but when I attempt to use it with my own imported images the option is grayed out and unavailable?? Any ideas, do I need to change a setting when I am importing?

So if the files are not RAW then the Auto Exposure
Feature is Grayed out?? If so that answers my
question. I am certain that my files are done
    importing.
That is correct. You can only use the Auto Exposure button RAW files, as it applies settings adjustments that are only available in RAW images. These are un-processed images, what you are doing is 'processing' the negative.
Once that is done, then you apply other adjustments, such as levels or cropping. Processed images, such as JPG or TIFF, are already processed within the camera, so you can't make any further adjustments to the negative process.

  • Using auto exposure give the same settings for every picture

for some reason, aperture 3.0 has been giving me the same settings when using the auto exposure on raw files. i swear it wasn't that way when i first started using the program. regardless of the image, it always sets an exposure of 1.0 and a recovery of 0.0.

GLITCHY GIMMICKS Just imported 2 raw & 2 Jpegs, Adj WB & Exp. on a raw. Then went to Library & turned on Quick Preview, went back to Adjustments and could still carry out adjustments. Went to another image and it still allows adjustments but the adjustments are being applied to the previous image. Typical Aperture Glitches. Apple would do better to get the stuff they have; working proper, before producing more and more GLICHY GIMMICKS Allan

  • Auto exposure not working

I'm using Aperture 1.5.6 and Leopard. I've always been able to use the Auto exposure button at the top. I just noticed it's grayed out and I can't use it. Is this a known problem?
    Thanks for any help.

What is the best image browser to export my images first to using a card reader. On my old tiger OS they exported to Preview and I hated that. Should I take them straight into Adobe DNG or DPP and how do I tell it to auto go to whichever app? I'm an avid Photoshoper so would that be the best possibility. I want to have the ability to edit them first before importing into Aperture.

  • Aperture freezes every time I push the auto exposure button. Any suggestions?

Aperture freezes every time I push the auto exposure button. Any suggestions?

What is your Aperture version? And since when are you haveíng this problem? Did this start, after you imported  photos or updated software? Did you move your Aperture library or your original image files? Did Aperture crash?
Does it only happen when you are working in your main Aperture library, or also when you are using a different Aperture library?
As a test, create a new Aperture library and and try to adjust an image there. Does it work?

  • IMAQ vision acquisition does auto white/black level adjustment

    Hi,
I am using IMAQ Vision to capture RS170 video from a device we manufacture. I have noticed that the white/black levels seem to be "adjusted" automatically for each image acquisition I make. I would like to turn this feature off, but cannot find a method to do this. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks,

    Hi Howard,
It sounds like you are turning on the auto exposure before each acquisition.  Are you performing these acquisitions in LabVIEW?  If so, you may be programmatically setting the white and black reference levels.  This is done in the shipping example HL Analog Attributes.vi.  Try performing the acquisitions in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX).  If you hit the Auto Exposure button in MAX before each snap/grab, you should see this behavior, otherwise you shouldn’t.

  • No Auto Exposure Button

The auto exposure button at the top of the my adjustments HUD does not seem to work. It is grayed out. Is there a fix for this. The auto levels button does work.

It's only available if you are shooting RAW

  • Auto Exposure too bright?

It seems that auto-exposure often makes my images way too bright, cranking up the exposure to max or near max. Is anyone else having this problem?

    HI:
Being a professional photographer, I almost consistently avoid using the autoexposure option in Aperture. I do my best to make sure that the exposure is "dead-on." However, there are times when my exposure is off by 1/3 of a stop to 1/2 of a stop. In most cases, such a variation in exposure is not noticeable; it's when the highlights are blown-out by just that amount when it is most apparent. I, then, use the manual exposure slider to bring back the highlights.
Nonetheless, I have played with the autoexposure feature in Aperture the odd time; and I have noticed a tendency of it to "over expose" images. It's important to remember that such a tool isn't very "finess" it's broad-spectrum and general purpose. It's not going to get it right all the time.
Remember, "auto" settings in PhotoShop don't always work the way you want either.

  • Auto exposure not applying when using the auto enhance function

I am on Aperture 3.6 and Yosemite. I use a Canon 6D and shoot in RAW. When I am doing the batch auto enhance to my shots, I find that even though in the adjustments preset Auto Enhance includes auto exposure, often it is actually not applied. Are there anyways to fix this? The images actually are a bit underexposed and I now need to go through picture by picture to click on the auto button under adjustment. Thanks.

Have you set your camera to use Canon's Highlight Tone Priority? Then most of the Raw files will be underexposed, because Aperture is developing the RAW file "as is" and not applying the in-camera settings. See Keith Barkley's user tip.

  • Apple please rework the auto exposure adjustment

90% of the time, the result is worse than before. It seems, Aperture's auto exposure adjustment is based on an average of the whole picture. So in its effort to get a well distributed histogram over the whole range, it happily blows the brighter parts of the picture.
I usually try to recover most of the highlights except small reflections etc. and then lighten up shadows and mid-tones with the appropriate tools to get a well exposed picture.
So I would prefer, that the auto exposure adjustment would be more sensitive towards blown highlights especially larger contiguous areas of highlights.
If you can't find an algorithm that works reliable, probably give me two separate auto exposure adjustment buttons. One adjusts to overall good exposure, like it is currently, the other tries to prevent blown highlights.
An even more advanced auto exposure adjustment would be, to combine the current exposure adjustment with some shadow and mid-tones adjustment, in case the exposure adjustment with preserving highlights led to an underexposed image.
I don't expect this to give perfect results, but it would be a real timesaver to use it as a starting point for manual fine tuning.
Not to bash Aperture but to encourage you to improve it: ACR's auto exposure mechanism is doing a much better job than Aperture's current one.

Well, obviously all your photos are already exposed perfectly!
(Seriously: when you say "nothing happens", do you mean absolutely nothing? Does the "Exposure" panel's check-box become checked after you hit the Auto button? If so, then it made SOME adjustment (though perhaps not enough for you to notice, see initial comment!) If not, then yeah, something is not working right for you.
