Auto fill URL's

I have a non earth shaking question that seems to be the opposite of everyone else I find in search. Why do some URL's always come up in the address line when I start an address--for example all I have to do is type an "A" and amazon comes up even if I haven't been there for months, and other addresses won't appear even tho I was there recently. For example-- www.macrumors.com seems to be easily forgotten. I would like the machine to remember some of these addresses so my lazy brain doesn't have to. Any ideas? I don't start with a space either so I figure it should remember.
Thanks George

Hi George
The URL prompts are coming from your Bookmarks, Cache and History files. If MacRumors appears in one or more of those files, it ought to appear in the prompts.

  • Safari Auto-fill URL Needs Work

When I begin typing a previously visited website URL into the address field, that doesn't necessarily mean that I want to return to the same page of that site which I previously visited. That means, while it's nice to have the auto-fill (or auto-complete; whatever you call it) function, I would much rather it just autofill the homepage URL of that site. Even though a drop-down menu appears with suggested URLs, many of us just type and hit enter, only to find we've landed someplace else. Many times, previously visited pages have been changed or deleted and, instead of getting the all-too familiar 'Error 404' (page does not exist), I have to enter the URL again, and then delete the part of it that the auto-complete has erroneously guessed that I wanted. Take a tip from Netscape Navigator 4.72 for Mac: auto-complete ONLY the homepage URL... nothing more. Thanks.

    Hi Mike
From other related threads, seems a number of users are waiting for something different from Apple in this area. Sending feedback to Apple via the Safari Menu>Report Bugs to Apple is one effective way of reaching Apple Software Engineers.
In the meantime, the only effective work-around is to press the space bar before typing the URL. Of course, no prompts appear, however, the long list doesn't appear either.

  • I like to have firefox 3.6.13 for Mac (OS X 10.6) to auto fill url exactly the way safari does it. Is there any way to get this done?

It's really annoying that in firefox you need to type two letters, then go down using the arrow and then hit enter.
In safari it's easy: you type two letters and the url and just hit enter.

Firefox 3.6 requires at least OS X 10.4, the last version that works on OS X 10.3.9 is Firefox 2.0.0.20 available from ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/2.0.0.20/mac/en-US/

  • Auto fill the URL

I recently switched to mac and one of the little things that really annoys me is that I cant find out how to auto fill a URL when I'm on the internet. (automatically add the WWW and the .com) Ive tried both firefox and safari. In windows its CTRL+Enter. Ive tried command + return with some success but I think the only reason that works sometimes is that I may already ahve that URL in my bookmarks. Is there a way to do this in OSX?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
Since you are new to mac, you have not developed a browser history which the selfcomplete function uses to do what you are asking.
For instance if I enter g in the browser and wait a very short time, google.com pops up.
The http://www. is automatically added when you hit the enter key.
If there are many sites starting with g, they all appear in a dropdown menu. As I keep typing, the list shortens.
Try entering the first letter(s) of a website you have already visited and see if that happens.
With FF it's similar but you have to scroll down to get the actual URL from the dropdown box. There may be a way to have the URL complete in the address box - I have not looked too deeply into FF.

  • Privacy Browsing on, web history auto-fills into new tab URL field

Even with Privacy Browsing on, when I go to open a new tab and then start typing in the URL field of the new tab, it tries to auto-fill or offer up a list of previously visited websited, ones only visited with the Privacy Browsing on.
How do I clear those and prevent them from appearing?
    Thanks

    Hi, Peter.
Well, again, the issue was reported with Chrome, so I'd use that to test. (IE might 'fill' the form in a way that ADF can detect it, whereas Chrome may fill the form in a way that ADF doens't sense it.) With Chrome, (using an address as the example), you'd go to the street address field, and Chrome would display a drop-down list of saved addresses. (You can set up the addresses in the settings page that I described above.) Once you pick from one of the addresses, it would fill in ALL of the address fields (e.g. street address, city, state, zip) for you. It is these other 'auto-filled' fields that ADF doesn't sense have anything in them.
I'll see if I can put together a simple ADF project and instructions for how to reproduce using Chrome....
    Thanks,
    Karl

  • Need help with Safari auto fill.

    Auto fill problems.
    1. It's spotty in its application. On some pages it works fine and fills in all fields with one click. On others it says "can't complete form", but then as I begin typing each field, it gives me fill in options. Why can't it just fill them in from the start?
    2. My name and phone number fields have bad values that it tries to fill in. I keep entering the right stuff on new forms, but it never seems to "learn" them. How can I find and remove or overwrite the bad values, without deleting all the other fields it has learned properly (do not want total reset)? I think it is getting the last name first version of my name from address book where I have that option set, but I don't want that in my web fill ins.
    3. Is there a master auto fill template somewhere with field names and values I can edit? Or does it collect this for every different URL I ever fill in, and so there is no way to set values I want used in all web pages?

    HI,
From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Autofill tab. Click the Edit button next to *Other Forms*. Remove all.
And under the Autofill tab, make sure: *User names and passwords* and *Using info from my Address Book card* are both selected.
If you have problems logging into a site...
Quit Safari (Command + Q) Now open Keychain Access (Applications/Utilities) Select Passwords on the left. Delete any keychains for sites you have problems logging into.
Now relaunch Safari. Login to a site with your user name and password as you normally would, then click Yes when prompted. That will create a new keychain for you.
Keychain Access stores your passwords securely.
Or does it collect this for every different URL I ever fill in,
Correct. But only if you have *user names and passwords* and *Using info from my Address Book card* selected in Safari / Preferences - Autofill.
Another suggestion when having problems using a website, is to delete the cookies. Go to Safari / Preferences / Security. Click *Show Cookies*. Delete the url's for that site then relaunch Safari.

  • Safari Auto Fill Issue - Same domain with multiple logins

    Hello Group,
I am working with Safari's Auto Fill feature for user names and passwords on website pages that I log into and it is not doing what I would like it to do. For some reason I am unable to save more than one login per domain and is not seeing the entire url path. If save my user name and password for say this url path of ************* it will save the user name and password but when you look in safari->preferences->autofill, its only showing the top level of the domain and not the entire path.
And if there is a different page on the site located at a completely different url path such as *********** that I need to log into and I try to save a user name and password for this different url path, it asks me if i want to update the current user name and password, and I don't want to do that, I want to save a new different user name and password for this second login screen.
Is there anyway to get this to see the entire url and remember separate logins for each different page on the same domain? Thanks.
    Doug
    <Edited by Host, URL's removed>

To the moderator. Thank you for approving my post, but how am I suppose to show what I am talking about if you go and remove the url examples I put in my post? The links were not bad, spam or etc, they were just examples paths I made up.

  • Slideshow background auto-fill's with other images?

    Hi all,
I am making a slideshow in iDVD, and some of the images have background of other images... It seems to auto-fill and it looks terrible! It's sometimes on the sides and other times at the bottom, like in my example. I thought perhaps it would burn without it, but no such luck. I am using iDVD 6 also....
Any guidance would be much appreciated <3 (*see photo attached)

  • I need to know how to turn off my auto fill i do not like haveing that info accessable to hakers and do not want my computer to remember credit card numbers?

i looked in tools to options and then to privacy but i do not see a box saying remember the text that i type. i do not know if this is a program on firefox or windows that is auto fill.

You can set the pref <b>browser.sessionstore.privacy_level</b> to 2 (never) or 1 (non-HTTPS, default in Firefox 3 versions) on the <b>about:config</b> page to disable saving cookies via session restore.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.sessionstore.privacy_level
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
*Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
*Preferences that have been modified show as bold(user set).
*Preferences can be reset to the default or changed via the right-click context menu.

  • Save the password but disable the auto fill

    Hi All,
I have a typical requirement in ff 3.5.15, where i want to save the password for any login. but i do not want to use the auto fill for filling the password automatically.
In short , i want to use the password save option but disable autofill . Is it posible.
    Thanks in advance

    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Password_only_filled_after_entering_user_name
Set the pref signon.autofillForms to false on the about:config page.
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/signon.autofillForms
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />

  • How do I remove auto-fill items?

    Hi,
When I type in "w" as the start of a url in the address bar, a list of 4 or 5 previously visited sites pops up immediately. I have tried disabling auto-fill, deleting all my bookmarks and reinstalling them, deleting history, cache etc., and it still happens. Actually it's stopping me using Safari as my browser, and I'm now using Chrome instead. How can I fix this issue in Safari?
    Thanks,
    Richard

    HI Richard,
The only alternative at this time is to turn on Private Browsing.
From your Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Private Browsing.
Safari won't remember pages you visit, history, or AutoFill information.
When I type in "w" as the start of a url in the address bar, a list of 4 or 5 previously visited sites pops up immediately.
Most Safari users are complaining about this feature. You can provide feedback here.

  • Is it possible to disable auto fill in address field?

I need to disable the auto fill function in the address field. Is this possible?

    Hi Joe
There's no way to disable the URL. Trashing the History (User Account>Library>Safari folder) and Metadata files (User Account>Library>Cache>Metadata and Safari folders) minimizes the prompts. Purging all Bookmarks helps too. However, the actual function of the prompts is built into the application's software, so it simply starts to rebuild the prompts again.
If you don't want to see prompts, simply press the space-bar once before entering a URL. That's the only work-around. If you don't want Safari to record your browsing activity, select "Private Browsing" in the Safari Menu each time you open Safari.

  • BIG problems with iOS 8.2 Safari ("dark mode" menu bar, no auto-fill, etc)... HELP, please?

So I was simply wiping the dust off my screen, with Safari open, and once I had finished... Safari just went belly-up.
And I need some help badly.
First thing that I noticed was that Safari now has a "dark mode" menu bar.
Secondly, my auto-fill user names and passwords no longer "auto-fill" - I have to place the cursor in a field and have the keyboard pop up in order to access the auto-fill function: previously, the fields simply, well, auto-filled.
And, thirdly, when I attempt to post a message to the Apple Support Communities, there is no visible text in the body of the text. I'm using my MacBook Pro to type this message.
I have searched and searched to try to find remedies to my problems, but I can't find a thing. There's nothing unusual in Accessibility (that would make the whole screen, for example, grayscale), nothing changed in passwords, etc.
I'm at my wits end! Even restoring from an older backup doesn't remedy any of the problems.
    Can anyone help?

If the menu bar at the top of Safari show white text on a grey background, and autofill isn't working, then you probably have private browsing 'on'. Tap the icon top right of the Safari screen (the square on top of a second square), tap the Private button at the top of the next screen and then Done - Safari should then go back to its normal colours and autofill should work again

  • How to: Create a master form that auto-fills data into other pdf forms?

I hope someone can please help me.  I have about 15 PDF forms that all require similar data entry (name, address etc). Can I create a master form that we fill in once per client, and then auto-fill in the matching data on the 15 forms?
I am not looking for an online solution as the information is highly sensitive.
I have already created a form in Acrobat X Pro with the 'master data', and created the (15) forms with identically named fields.  How I link the forms now to the master, I cannot figure out (after much searching).
I have read similar questions on the same topic but have not found any answers.   I hope this time someone can please help.
    Many thanks in advance.

Thank you!  I had just figured out how to export the data from the master as an FDF file and then import it to the other files.  I'm afraid I don't understand scripting to automate the process across multiple files.  To you mean with java script?
I've also thought about combining the forms, once we know which ones the particular client will need.  I have to see how it works in practice for my colleagues who will be using them.
    Thank you again.

  • How can I get the drop down window for a ID and P/W "Always remember" Auto Fill

Recently I had a mail issue with my ATT (Yahoo)  Mail account and they temporarily changed by Password.
After the issue was resolved I changed it back but the auto fill kept the temporary Password in Safari when I log onto my e-mail account via the internet instead of the Apple Mail program.
In the Past, whenever I would put a different P/W or ID there would be a drop down window that said :
Never, later or Always remember", at least something like that terminology.
Since I have had no reason to change P/W or ID lately I do  ot know if it is Lion issue or if there is a way of getting the drop down to appear.
    Thanks,

If I am not making my request understood, please let me know and I will try and reword it.
