Auto find/change question

Is there a way in indesign to have it automatically find/replace?  Like can i set up a paragraph style or something.  My clients always want the same character such as .. made into . and :: made into :  without manually inputting them in find/change every time i change documents. I'm just trying to speed up my work flow a little more.    Thanks in advance.

  • Find Change through external text file

    Hello folks
I am bit pretty in InDesign scripting so could you please look into this.
How can i change any particular text field in Indesign CS3 document from text file.
I do have find change script but for each InDesign document specific text file is assigned.
So each time i have to modify find change GREP property that is also repetetive of work. Is there any way to get find change information should be extract from external text file.
    Many Tanks in advance

In the FindChangeByList script, you could customize the function myFindFile(myFilePath) {...} as to search the FindChangeList text file in the document location rather than the script location. That's an example. The question is: given a document, where will you have the corresponding FindChangeList?

  • How to Open Find/Change with menuAction

    Hi,
Read the question carefully I'm asking how to open the Find/Change
dialog, not how to toggle it.
    Toggling is easy enough:
    app.menuActions.itemByName("$ID/Find/Change...").invoke();
But if it is open, this will close it, and vice versa.
I'm wondering if there's any way to specifically make sure it's opened?
    Thanks,
    Ariel

    Hi Ariel,
This probably won't help but see https://forums.adobe.com/message/4413557#4413557
If you could perform some action that will fail if the panel is closed then you could use a try catch to determine its state.
I'll leave it to you to think of what that action would be.

  • [CS3 JS] Find/Change Object Problem

app.changeObjectPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing does not seem to clear the change object preferences for me.
    app.findObjectPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing works as expected, as do both app.findTextPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing and app.changeTextPreferences = NothingEnum.nothing.
Does anyone else use the new Find/Change Object?

Hello. I'm new here but it seems to be the only place where I can post this question to.
I'm working in a C# application that uses InDesign CS3 scripting. I'm trying to create an index automatically from a tabbed list of words in a text file.
As C# is a strongly typed language, I have to cast all objects to the right type. I'm having problems when I try to add the page numbers to the created index entries using the following code (I've used the CreateIndexEntry.jsx scrip as a starting point).
//Find all occurrences of the word or set of words (the topic name)
    ((InDesign.FindTextPreference) app.FindTextPreferences).FindWhat = topic.Name;
    InDesign.Objects foundTexts = doc.FindText(System.Reflection.Missing.Value);
It's supposed to be an Array of Text objects (InDesign.Text) but when I try to cast each object using this
//Code is forced because I've tried everything here
//Loop through each finding and add page numbers to topic
    IEnumerator textEnum = foundTexts.GetEnumerator();
    while (textEnum.MoveNext())
    object text = textEnum.Current;
    topic.PageReferences.Add((InDesign.Text)text, InDesign.idPageReferenceType.idCurrentPage, System.Reflection.Missing.Value, System.Reflection.Missing.Value);
I got the following exception (translated).
text is not an InDesign.Text object (Interfaces doesn't match)
So the question is what object type should I use to cast each object resulting by calling the Document's FindText method.
Every suggestion will ve very welcome.
    Thank You very much.

  • FIND/CHANGE - Applying Paragraph Style

    Hello,
I used FIND/CHANGE to apply my paragraph style and when I apply the paragraph style... it applies the style to the entire line.
    For example,
    A. #70712       resulted to         A. #70712
I only wanted the "#70712" to be changed to my style. I used the GREP search and entered #.+ and then I choose the paragraph style I want and clicked change all. The problem is that it changed all the text on that line and applied the paragraph style.
Please help. Thank you very much.

If I understand your request correctly:
If your paragraph style uses a numbered list to create the "A." and the remainder of the paragraph consists of only "# 70712" that you type in manually (or place from an existing file), I believe that you you don't need GREP. You can format the auto-numbered list differently from the remainder of its paragraph, by specifying a character style for the number portion.
To extract only the non-numbered portion of an auto-numbered paragraph, for a TOC, in the Table of Contents dialog box, open the bottom part by clicking More Options if necessary, and in the Numbered Paragraphs pull-down menu, select Exclude Numbers.
Read more about Table of Contents in Help, and/or with a Google search for terms like "InDesign table of contents numbered list exclude numbers" without quotes.
If you need additional special formatting "tricks" in the source paragraphs, or in the TOC entry paragraphs, look into Nested Styles and GREP
Styles in Help or Google searches.

  • Find/Change within page range

Either I'm a bit thick for not being able to work out how to do this or I'm the only one that thinks that this is would be a very useful thing to be able to do.
I want to find/change text in multiple instances all at once, but only on a page range, not the whole document. If I can't do that being able to limit it to one page would work. I realise I can move the pages in question to a new document, do it there and then move it back but that seems a rather 1990's solution!

If there are no threaded text frames anywhere in the document, here's a trick I've used when I've been in your shoes in the past:
Open document. Use TextStitch to stitch all frames in doc.
Go to the first page in your range. Find the first frame (the top-leftmost frame) and start selecting text. Go to the last page in your range. I use control + shift + down-arrow to select whole paragraphs. Hold 'em down until...
... you have selected all of the text you need for your find/change query. Perform your query with "Selection" scope.
    Perform any post-find/change cleanup necessary.
When your query is done, use TextStitch to unstitch all frames in your doc. (Which will break all threads, including ones that were made by hand before step 1, hence my caveat "If there are no threaded text frames anywhere in the document.")

  • Date Find - Change

Is it possible to batch change dates in a spreadsheet? How would you change the month on a row of dates Ex: 05/02/08, 05/15/08, etc. to 06/02/08, 06/15/08, etc. I've tried the find change command with dates in many formats (mm/dd/yy; m/dd; May 2, 2008; May 2, etc) with no success.

I though I should be brief in posting my question but after the spanking I just received, I'll give more details of what I did before I posted my question so that you'll see all that I tried before asking for help.
    1. Last month I searched through the Help in the Numbers application and did not find a solution.
    2. Last month I posted my question to another user group that I belong to and no one could answer because they stated they did not have that much experience with Numbers.
    3. Tonight I tried the application's Help, but still no answers.
    4. Tonight I decided to give Apple Discussions a try. I searched 'Find/Change' under Numbers and received 113 hits. I read every single one of the posts. While none spoke directly about changing 'Dates', I tried the items discussed such as changing to text 360, making changes, then back to numeric, but this did not work for me either.
    5. I tried changing my dates to all the various formats and again, no effects.
    6. And during all my attempts I also tried the various options (next, find and replace, replace, etc.) alone or in combinations.
    7. I came back to the Apple Discussions and posted my question.
And regarding the way I posted my question, I felt I should post a new Topic under Numbers since Dates was not part of the 113 discussions on Find/Change. Also, since the original question was different than mine I felt I might "get in trouble" for posting within that discussion. I see I was wrong, so yes, my newbie status of 2 posts is my excuse.

  • Subcript using find/change

Hi I am trying to change for eg: H2O to H2(subscript)O using the find/change command. It doesn't work. Can anyone help?

    Ted, Peter and John,
As Ted, I make scientific books. Such expression is rather treated as an equation with MathType or MathMagic editors. So this kind of question does not arise, for me. The treatment is done, eg, with a TeX syntax as: ${H}_{2}O$.
I've created a lot of grep search/replace to do this. Eg: find H2O, CH4, SO4/2- … and replace by the good TeX syntax so that we can finally obtain MathMagic equations.
SO4/2- is interesting: SO, normal, 4 (subscript), 2- (superscript with - using a special math MMTimes font), one under the other.
Difficult too to treat with ID a formula where H2O is, eg, all in subscript!
Easier to write it with MathMagic and, fortunately, a lot of "formulas" will be treated by search/replace as:
    search H2O
    replace by: ${H}_{2}O$
Good night! (22h 20, in France)

  • Find/Change help with wildcard numbers...

hello... i'm looking for help with wildcards...
i have a specific task to complete.. i need to add dash & space into a space in a string of letters and characters...
    here
    221kbps - 00:28:34space dash space here47Mb - 44.1 kHz
    198kbps - 01:27:43 41Mb - 44.1 kHz
    215kbps - 00:34:52 156Mb - 44.1 kHz
    225kbps - 00:32:14 54Mb - 48 kHz
so my finished text will look like this
    221kbps - 00:28:34 - 47Mb - 44.1 kHz
    198kbps - 01:27:43 - 41Mb - 44.1 kHz
    215kbps - 00:34:52 - 156Mb - 44.1 kHz
    225kbps - 00:32:14 - 54Mb - 48 kHz
there are many variables to the text - but i thought perhaps i could create a wildcard digit find/change based on the Mb bit, replacing the single space with space dash space
    BUT
i need to retain the numbers before the Mb
so my question - is it possible to RETAIN WILDCARD NUMBERS?
    merci beaucoup!

tried it in text - no joy...
    tried it as a grep.

  • Changing date format (find/change?)

Hello, I have little bit tricky question.
I have document full of dates:
    01.01.2013
    02.01.2013
    05.01.2013
And i want to change all these dates just to:
    01. Mon
    02. Tue
    05. Fri
Is there a possibility to do that within Indesign? Thank you for your answers.

    OrcusDei wrote:
Sandee, you got it exactly right. That's very unfortunate. It's pretty simple data formating and i'm surprised InDesign can't nativly do that O_O
InDesign is not a data formating tool - nor is it a word processor. It's a layout tool for creating print/web ready documentation.
It can do a lot of things - but it can't reformat your data.
I would have done the same as you did - but I would have added a blank character style(create a char style based on None and don't select any options) to the numbers and created an index.
    http://www.kahrel.plus.com/indesign/index_charstyles.html
Brought that to Excel and converted the text to the way it was supposed.
Then prepare the "FindChangebyList" in the scripts panel.

  • Find/Change (Multiple Date Changes in one Find)

Hi ID geniuses, got a question for your gigantic brains.
This may or may not be an easy one...
I do a lot of production work and I'd like to create a Find/Change or even a GREP search that will allow me to change multiple blank dates at once).
the format changes from file to file and follows these 4 formats usually and all 4 formats could be used in one document.
    XX/XX/XX (8 characters)
    XX/XX/10 (8 characters)
    XX/XX/2010 (10 characters)
9/26/10 - wrong date in place already. (6 – 8 characters depending on the month)
Instead of having 4 different searches, is it possible to do one search that look for any of these text formats and change them at once?
    Any ideas/guidance will be appreciated.
    Thanks for your time.

    Piece of cake.
Of course GREP comes to the rescue. Enter this in your search field:
    \b((XX|\d{1,2})/){2}(XX|\d{2,4})\b
and it'll find any of your examples. Wot Doth This All Mean?
\b     a Word break -- there must not be a word character before this entire expression. This means it'll ignore "XXX/XX/XX".
(     repeat group -- see below
( XX | \d{1,2} )     Either "XX" (exactly) or "a digit, 1 or 2". This means it'll ignore "XXX/XX/XX" (three exes), pick up "1/2/3" (one digit), ignore "123/123/123" (three digits)
    /     A slash. Nothing special, except ...
)     .. since this is the end of the repeat group ...
{2}     ... we want twice the sequence "XX/" (or "digit/"), to match "XX/XX/" and every possible combo with digits as well.
(     oh yet another group. That's because ...
XX     .. this literal text ...
    |     ... OR ... (hold on, I'm gettin' there)
\d{2,4}     .. two to four digits should be matched ..
)     .. in this entire group.
\b     Phew! A Word break to prevent it matching "12/34/56789"

Please read my question carefully, this is, I think, a question for the experts. It's not the usual name change question.
When I setup my new MacBook Pro, something slipped by me and my computer was named First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro (using my real first and last name).
I changed the computer name in Preferences/Sharing to a new name and Preferences/Accounts to just be Mike. I can right click on my account name, choose advanced, and see that everything looks right.
However, If I do a scan of my network with my iPhone using the free version of IP Scanner, it lists my computer as First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro! And it lists the user as First-Last.
So even though another Mac just sees my new computer name, and my home folder is Mike, somewhere in the system the original setup with my full name is still stored. And it's available on a network scan. So my full name might show up at a coffee shop.
Can I fully change the name without doing a complete re-install of Lion and all my apps?

One thought... you said the iPhone displayed your computer's old name? I think that you must have used the iPhone with this computer before you changed the name. So no one else's iPhone should display your full name unless that iPhone had previously connected to your Mac. For example, I did this exact same change, and I use the Keynote Remote app to connect with my MacBook Pro. It would no longer link with my MacBook Pro under the old name, and I found that I had to unlink and then create a new link under the new name. So the answer to your question is, there is nothing you need to do on the Mac, but rather the phone, and no other phone will display your full name.
