Auto-hiding of bookmarks panel rarely works

I've seen a few posts on this subject.
I agree with those finding it very annoying when the bookmarks panel stays open after the page has been loaded.
The thing is, it actually does sometimes close automatically, say in one out of ten cases for me. I've noticed it on e.g. macintouch.com, a fairly simple site that loads very quickly. I wonder whether other sites are perhaps too complex trying to load all sorts of scripts, external resources etc. so they just never quite finish loading and hence the bookmarks stay open?

thanks for for your reply.
It seems fairly random, but the bookmarks panel disappears for me on a number of sites. I just logged into my page on discussions.apple.com via a bookmark and the panel went away quickly, ditto on moogmusic.com earlier.
This was the default behaviour in previous versions of iOS and I'd be surprised if this randomness was intentional.

Application shortcut for bookmarks toolbar not working on firefox for mac

OS X allows users to assign shortcut keys to arbitrary menu items. I'm trying to add an application shortcut to firefox to show/hide the bookmarks toolbar (in my case, I'd like to use cmd-ctrl-L, but I've tried others too), however the shortcut key doesn't work. I can see the menu item flash as if the OS is trying to activate it, but the bookmarks toolbar doesn't toggle. Manually clicking the menu item does work.
Any ideas? Is this a known bug? Am I missing something obvious?

Nope. Haven't solved it, and I'm convinced I can't from this end. The only thing helping me is the extension I mentioned above, but that fix is very specific to showing/hiding the bookmark bar.

Auto-Display of Navigation Panel

I'm frustrated with searching help for the answer to my question - certainly someone out there can point me in the right direction!
I'm a novice using Acrobat Pro 9. I've created a pdf from a Word Doc and have added bookmarks to navigate to the chapter titles. It's beautiful, it works fine, but what I want now is for the bookmark nav panel to automatically display when this pdf is opened. How can I make that happen?

You can force the linked PDF to open in Reader or Acrobat. That way the bookmarks panel will always be open.
I don't remember the exact steps (not hard tho) but you do need FTP access to your web site.

Set default Initial View to Bookmarks Panel and Page on all new docs

Hello Acrobat Experts,
We convert *many* Word docs to PDF. We have PDFMaker force security on all docs. Now every document has the security settings we want.
That works.
We want to force the default Initial View to be Bookmarks Panel and Page so that *every* new document shows the Bookmark Panel and the Page.
We don't want to set this per document (which is a multi-setp process and a hassle, especially now that security is enabled) but globally for all new documents created by Adobe Acrobat.
Any and all advice is most welcome.

The article I pointed to in my Oct 20, 2009 post #3 contains two pointers that might assist to initially open the PDF fitting the page to the window.
I think you may be after "Vire [/Fit]" as described in the article;
[ /PageMode /UseOutlines
/Page 1 /View [/Fit ]
/DOCVIEW pdfmark
These lines of code open your PDF document with the bookmarks panel open. If you just want the document on its own try "UseNone" instead of "UseOutlines". Here are some additional values:
/Page 1 opens the PDF on page 1
View [/Fit ] opens the PDF Fit to page
And the article points to the PDFMark reference where you might look at Actions and Destinations on page 47.
I've not tried to do this myself so would you be kind enough to post your result and let us know the version of Acrobat you're using?

This panel is too wide and covers too much space in underlying windows. The book marks text should not be truncated but some way needs to be found to allow the entire text of any line to be viewed when the cursor lands on it. Much of the information in "HELP" related to this question turns out to be very very old (essentially meaningless in 2012).

My bookmarks truncate, but only after many, many characters. Then you can view the full title, as well as the URL, in the mouseover tooltip.
To narrow the width of the bookmark menus:
(1) There might be an existing add-on targeted to this; I didn't search.
(2) You could create a custom style rule. One way to do this is to use the Stylish extension and add the following userstyle (create a blank rule first):
<br>@namespace url(http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul);
#bookmarksMenu menupopup {max-width:15em;}
That works in my test, but you can tweak that maximum width to suit your needs. (1 "em" is about 16 pixels). Stylish can be installed from here: [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/stylish/ Stylish :: Add-ons for Firefox].
(3) You could create a custom style rule in the file userChrome.css, which you can add to your personal Firefox profile. I didn't test it.

How to open pdf with bookmarks panel showing?

Hi all,
I have searched and had no luck. I found a helpful a post but it did not help in my case. I need my PDF that I created via LiveCycle to open with bookmarks panel showing. I tried (control+D) File > Properties >initial View but the features/options are all disabled.
The file is not passport protected and I created myself.
Any help/tip provided would be very much appreciated,

Would anyone else like to see an auto-hiding Dock in full-screen mode?

Well, it doesn't work consistently here. I have Dock Hiding on. When a screen does not contain a full screen app, it works fine. Moving the mouse to the bottom of the screen (where I have the dock) pops up the dock as expected. If the screen has a full screen app in place (usually Mail or Safari), the behaviour is very inconsistent. Moving the mouse to the bottom of the screen, waving it back and forth, up and down, with the odd click, will bring up the dock in maybe 10 to 15% of attempts. Take the app out of full screen, and it works perfectly. Put it back in full screen, stops working. This is a new MacBook Pro with 10.7.1
Any ideas welcome. Meanwhile, Im getting used to the four finger squeeze to bring up the Launcher.

Bookmark links stop working after security applied - v7.1.0

System:

Office 2007 SP1
Acrobat Pro 7.1.0
In Word 2007, I created a top menu of links that use bookmarks to jump down the page to various topics. When I Save As to PDF, the created PDF top menu links work. When I secure the PDF with a password, the top menu links stop working. However, Web links continue to work. What is causing the top menu links to stop working?

Ok, that's fine. They are form fields, almost certainly.

doesn't matter.
You just have to set Changes allowed: filling in form fields and
signing existing signature fields in the Permissions box.

How to lock bottom control bar from auto-hiding in full screen mode

I am using Flash Player with ie in Win7. It is very irritating while watching YouTube videos for the status/control lbar to keep auto-hiding. When the bar auto-hides, the pause/play position becomes the progress bar position - and a click where Pause used to be resets the video to start. How can I keep the bottom control bar from auto-hiding in full screen mode?

There's nothing you can do to Flash Player, itself, to prevent this from happening. Apparently, there's no way to disable via youtube, or google, either -- http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/youtube/_E5yFvNJCPk
You SHOULD be able to call up the bar by hovering the cursor at the bottom of the screen and then, after a a second or two, click on the pause button. (It shouldn't restart the video in other words.) But, if for whatever reason, this doesn't work, just click once in the center of the screen to pause the video. To restart, click the center of the screen again.

Identify program that prevent Taskbar's auto-hiding

Hello,
Normally the taskbar of windows can be set as auto-hiding.
However, occasionally some program can prevent this auto-hiding
from working. Examples are that when a download is finished in IE it gives a notification bar at the bottom, and when the IE windows is not in the front, the icon will be darkened somehow in blue shade in the taskbar, which also prevent taskbar’s auto-hiding.
Until one handles that notification by clicking it, the taskbar will continue to be displayed.
When multiple programs are open, sometimes when this happen it is
difficult to know which prevents the auto-hiding to taskbar, particularly when the program does not display the icon as highlighted. In these situations is there other ways to prevent such? Can it be done programmatically like with
Powershell?

Hi,
I doubt there is no such PowerShell command to do this job. In addition, I made a test in our testing enviroment, there is no such problem as your description. After IE finished download files, its notification won't prevent TaskBar auto hid.
For your situation, please check if it is other app that was running prevent TaskBar auto hid.

Enable Auto Hiding of Folio Scrollbars

Hi there,
I’ve just read on several websites that there’s a way to hide the scrollbars that by default cover 6 pixels of the folio on the right site of the screen, but I couldn’t find where and how to select this option. Apparently it is called “Enable Auto Hiding of Folio Scrollbars”.
I’m a bit confused that I read so often that it is possible but never how you can do it. Did I get something wrong?
(I work with DPS/InDesign CC on a 2009 iMac running the latest version of OS X Mountain Lion and want to make an iPad app.)

You select that option in DPS App Builder when you create the app. It's in the Advanced Options section on the App Details page.

Bookmark Panel

Gentlemen,
I designed in InDesign CC 2014, an interactive catalogue with function "Open other files".
In the files that are opened there is a button with the command "Go to Previous View".
All files are exported as interactive PDF and saved to ownership Initial View: "Page and Bookmarks Panel".
The PDF works perfectly, except that when I press the button "Go to Previous View" going to the PDF view of the above, but with the view of "Page and Pages Panel", not with the "Bookmark Panel".
What can be done to return the proper PDF viewing the "Panel Bookmarks" ?.

Initial view is, as the name says, just the initial view when opening the PDF. "Go to previous view" is only related to the page display, not bookmarks panel. In a test, and this might come out differently due to versions of Acrobat, my PDF opened with bookrmarks panel, as set for initial, with a button on page 2. Clicking the button took me back to the previous page and view, but the bookmarks panel was closed.
So it seems you can not control to open/close/keep the bookmarks panel by a button in the PDF.

Bookmark panel will not open when I publish to our company intranet

Hi.
I created a pdf with bookmarks and set the pdf to properties to "open bookmark panel and page. The document works fine if I email it to someone but if I publish it to the web (our intranet), the bookmark panel will not appear. This happens to other co-workers when they launch the pdf from the web. We all have acrobat reader 9 and I checked the settings and they seem to be fine.
Also, I recently was updated to office 2010 and used word to create my documents. I understand there is a bit of a problem with Acrobat 9 and Word 2010 but I am not sure if this is what is causing my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Command-A opens help in Bookmark Panel?

Why is it that, if I open the Bookmarks Panel, and the panel is empty (no bookmarks), and I hit Command-A on my keyboard, the Adobe Help program opens?
I'm trying to write an applescript in which any existing bookmarks are removed from a batch of PDFs. If I open a PDF that has bookmarks, open the Bookmarks Panel, and hit Command-A, it highlights all of the bookmarks for easy and swift deletion. But if there are no bookmarks, the Help program opens and screws up my script.
I know that I can strip out bookmarks in other ways, but I'm trying to write an all-in-one program for my company to do a series of tasks that can't easily be done using Acrobat's batch feature or javascript. This strange "feature" is really hindering my ability to do this in a logical way.

Really? That's just odd... Why do you need a keystroke to do the work of one key that already exists?

I can't find any documentation on the web about Command-A = F11, but I'll take your word for it since that is obviously what is happening. Your suggestion about creating a temporary bookmark first is a great idea! I will try that first thing tomorrow morning.

Even if it is a hardware problem they should fix it regardless of warranty. If you buy a car and after 1.5 years the doors fall off due to a failure in their design and construction, do you think the car manufacturer could pull off what Apple is trying to do? Yes the car still delivers its primary objective of driving from A to B, but significant functionality has been lost due to their fault.
It is the same with this iPhone wifi problem. Apple are a disgrace, I have had significant Apple Hardware failures with my MacBook Pro and iPhone within 2 years of purchase. Pathetic quality.
