Auto Import feature lacking convert to DNG and move to subfolders...

Folks,
As many of you may be aware, when setting up a folder for auto import, LR 3.3 does not give you the same options as you might see in the regular import functionality.  Namely, the ability to convert to RAW images to DNG on the import as well as move to subfolders is not available.  This is a real bugger for me as I have a nice new Eye-Fi Pro card that I have setup to dump all images from my camera to a "watched" folder which is then imported into LR automatically.  Unfortunately, auto import doesn't solve the issue for me, so I am back to doing the same old import routine I had done before which is tethering the camera back up via USB (or popping out the card and mounting it instead) and use the regular import feature.
I realize a lot of the design impetus for auto import is around tethered usage, where a photographer may want to see the images as fast as possible, but why would Adobe cripple the auto import functionality deliberately.  Give the auto import the same functionality as the regular import and let the customers decide which works best for their setup.  Geez!!
~David

I believe I watched a tutorial that indicated that Lightroom now downloads the raw files first and then does the conversion. This speeds up the download process and enables you to go back to my room to do other work more quickly. I cannot comment on the speed of the conversion because I don't convert to DNG. But my thoughts are that 700 raw files will take some time to convert.

  • Imported RAW files convert to black and white

I have LightRoom 1.4.1 as well as LightRoom beta installed.
    Intel iMac 20, OS 10.5.2
    Camera is Canon 40D.
I imported images from a Compact Flash card into LightRoom beta. They downloaded as they should, but then without my touching mouse or keyboard they, in random order, changed from color images to black and white. I deleted them all, exited the beta, imported the same images into LightRoom 1.4.1. Same thing happened.
I tried the Convert to DNG option, and they all imported as black and white without a preliminary color mode.
There are no develop steps set in the import dialog.
I imported them using the Canon import program, and they remained color images as they should. However, if I located them with the finder, though Preview showed them in color, Open With Lightroom or Photoshop CS3 brought them up as black and white.
    I'm stumped.
There were several jpeg files on the same CF; they imported and behaved as they should.

So I downloaded all the upgrades and re-installed them; rebooted, murmured incantations, re-imported photos.
Same results--black and white photos, rendering the computer and my software useless for processing.
Then I disconnected the card reader from my powered external USB hub, and plugged it directly into the iMac. All problems disappeared. Everything works as it should. Took a while to figure out, but my problem is solved.

  • Feature request: Convert to DNG... wrong behaviour

    Hi all,
in LR3 when I used the command "convert to DNG" on a previously converted file or group of files, Lightroom skipped the files and converted only the not yet DNGs.
Now in LR4 final (same as the beta) on MacOS 10.7, I find that it's converting all my files again and again, even if I already processed them to the latest 1.3 version and embedded the fast preview. I think this behaviour is very annoying and time consuming, whithout a good reason.
Isn't it possible to tell LR4 to do the same thing as LR3, so it converts only the previous version DNG files and leaves the new processed without reprocessing them?
Or at least a metadata filter in the library to identify the different versions of DNG files.
    Thank you
    Alan

The second copy is always in the original format.  There will be no conversion to DNG.

  • RESIZE option in LR4's Convert to DNG and DNG Converter 7

Besides the option for lossy compression I would love to see the Resize option from LR4 Beta's Export dialog in DNG Converter 7 as well as in LR4's "Library>Convert to DNG" function.
In the wake of cameras like the Nikon D800 and others with huge image files and easy option to convert to smaller sized DNGs would be very helpful.

    Mark Alan Thomas wrote:
Right. I'm not into the whole lossy compression thing. I like the idea of making smaller raw files, but I want the megapixels which remain to be good megapixels.
Now I get what you mean. Apologies.
That would be interesting and of course I absolutely second it: DNG with variable resolution but lossless compressed!
That would be a great option. So why not just offer both independently - resolution and compression?
Just don't disable the "Resize to fit" switch when "Use Lossy Compression" is off.
I understand the perils with this and I also understand that it's kind of counterproductive to the thought of a RAW/DNG file. But in the end, isn't it about flexibility and not purity of a system? Bring on some big fat warnings that make it clear to the user: "you are now leaving the path of a non-destructive file format!" But let the user decide.
For more safety you could even add the need to unlock this functionality in the Preferences.
    Side note:
There have been plenty of high-res DSLRs so far, Nikon D3X, Canon 5D MkII, 1Ds MkIII, Sony SLT-A77, SLT-A55, NEX-7, Alpha A-850 Alpha A-900 - but none of them seems to have stirred up the discussion about need and sanity of high megapixel DSLRs like the D800 now does.
It's probably because it's the highest so far and Nikon offers no lower resolution RAW as Canon does. What most seem to agree on however is that the high megapixel count can be nice for many and provides flexibility, but it can also be a burden at the same time.
No idea why Nikon don't offer sRAW like Canon do. But considering all this, a flexible option for smaller DNGs with individually settable compression and/or Resize would be a tremendous accomplishment!

  • Converting to DNG and picture resolution

I am importing Nikon D200 NEF file into lightroom and converting them in DNG.
DNG file are converted into 240 dpi instead native D200 300dpi.
Do I have control in lightroom with will set my resolution 300 dpi after converting.

Ok but if I use Crop tool in PSCS3 with front image option I would lake to have 300 dpi and not add another step before printing 4x6 at 300 dpi (1200x1800)

  • Convert to DNG and Backup at same time

I have not been able to figure out how to do this ...
I'd like to import my NEF files and do the following
    1) Import NEF files as DNG
    2) Backup converted DNG files (don't need the NEF)
    3) Be able to specify the Exact folder used for the backup.
(I know how to backup the NEF files to a LR specified subfolder)

    Does any know ?

  • Can i turn off the itunes auto importing feature?

Whenever i burn a mp3 disc itunes automatically starts importing the songs, it would be a cool feature if the disc had songs on it that itunes didn't already have, i want to turn it off because it's annoying every time i load a mp3 disc into my computer i have to stop itunes from importing.

Open iTunes. Go to Edit>Preferences>Advanced and change the setting "On CD Insert" in the drop down menu from Import Songs to Show Songs.

  • Importing .avi (to convert to .dvd and burn)

I downloaded a 350 MB avi file using a bittorrent client. After installing the DivX codec, I had no problem playing the .avi file on Quicktime.
What I'd like to do is play the .avi movie on my tv. I figured the easiest way to do this would be to burn a dvd.
I read on another forum that I could convert the .avi file to dvd with iMovie and iDVD. The first step is to import the .avi file to iMovie. I did this and it took a couple of hours. There's no problem playing the newly created iMovie project on iMovie... but... It's HUGE!
My imported 350 MB avi file has exploded into a 10 GB iMovie Project! Holy smokes! Is this supposed to happen?
This avi file contains DivX 6.0 video and MPEG Layer 3 audio.
BTW, is there anyway I could play the movie using Quicktime on my television? What would a need to connect my iBook to the tv?
Sorry if I'm in the wrong group, but my problem started with iMovie. Also, should I upgrade iMovie? I'm using 5.0.2.
    Thanks very much.

    Hello mistymerit,
My imported 350 MB avi file has exploded into a 10 GB iMovie Project! Holy smokes! Is this supposed to happen?
Absolutely. DV has a file size of roughly 13 GB per hour of video. Your file size indicates around 45 min of video, which is perfectly fine for burning to DVD: a DVD holds a maximum of 120 min of video (incl. menus).
If you create a DVD with iDVD, the software will compress the DV video to MPEG-2 and thus fit your movie onto a (4.7 GB) DVD - it doesn't care for the original file size, only the length counts.
To burn your movie to DVD, simply create a new project in iDVD and choose a menu theme. Now import your iMovie project by choosing File > Import > Video from the menu.
For more info on iDVD 5 have a look at this tutorial:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/idvd_5stone.html
    Another suggestion:
iDVD is NOT a disc burning app, so leave that work to software designed for it. Instead use iDVD's "Save as Disc Image" option (File > Save as Disk image). This creates an .img file on your HDD, that can be stored for future use and gives you the option to preview your DVD on your Mac before burning to disc.
Use Disc Utility or Toast to burn your DVD at slow speed. 4x is acceptable, 2x (... or even 1x) is better.
    hope this helps

  • Auto import images into aperture...and continue importing...

i know that there is a script to import images into aperture, but i need to use this with a tethered camera....so i use a canon app to shoot files to a folder and as the files come in, i need them to get imported as they keep coming in....i am only referencing them, so they are actually staying within the folder....i can import the files but i don't know how to/which command "keeps checking the folder for new files that came in" hope this makes sense....
i know that there is a "hot folder" app available which seems to be a automator app, but it is superslow and only brings in every 4th or 5th image (and sometimes just brings everything to a halt...)

  • Slow extra steps in "Convert to DNG"?

I have seen several similar questions with no answers:
It appears that in the new LR6/CC, when I "convert to DNG and Import", LR CC first imports all of the CR2 files to the destination folder, THEN converts the RAW files to DNG while simultaneously trying to process the Preview images. This is a departure from previous versions and seems to drastically slow down the import/convert process. It took nearly 2 hours to import 700 20MB CR2 and convert them to DNG. I am running OS X 10.10.3 on a late 2013 27-inch iMac with 16 GB RAM. Is this a bug, or is this what Microsoft would call a "feature"?

I believe I watched a tutorial that indicated that Lightroom now downloads the raw files first and then does the conversion. This speeds up the download process and enables you to go back to my room to do other work more quickly. I cannot comment on the speed of the conversion because I don't convert to DNG. But my thoughts are that 700 raw files will take some time to convert.

  • Auto import, how to prevent LR from jumping to new pictures

    Hi,
I would like to use my Nikon D700 together with the WT-4 to send pictures automatically to my laptop on events.
The pictures appear on the laptop's hard drive on a folder that is watched by LR's auto import feature.
Then my assistant would be at the laptop printing these pictures for customers to buy.
However, while testing this I cannot seem to disable Lightroom always jumping back to the latest imported pictures.
This is very annoying, because my assistant has to display the pictures to the customers, so she would be showing some pictures to a customer, and suddenly when I snap a new shot, the laptop jumps to the new picture and my assistant has to go hunting for that customers pictures again...
Is there some way to disable this?
Or am I taking the wrong approach to this?
I could off course disable the auto-import but in that case my assistant would have to go to the import screen every once in a while, which is also not ideal.
    Thanks for any help!

I don't know a way to disable this.

  • Lightroom 5 auto import issues with nikon d90

Hoping someone can help answer my question - I am wondering if Lightroom 5 has any issues with the auto import or tethering feature using a Nikon d90? I was using Lightroom 2 and the auto import feature has no issues with my d90. After I installed Lightroom 5 (Cloud App) and ran it for the first time, the first thing I used was the tethering feature and it worked great for 4 shots. I turned my camera off and then back on again and LR would not recognize my camera any longer for tethering. What's strange is that it will detect it for "Importing from Device" option. So, I went to plan two which was to auto import and that wasn't working at all. I am at a loss. I have a shoot coming up this weekend and need for one of these options to work. Any help is appreciated!!!

I use a D90, but I have never tried tethered shooting with it. Other users might have some suggestions for you, but looking at the list of supported cameras for tethered shooting the D90 is not "officially" supported in Lightroom. So you're probably on your own to find solutions. I know this isn't a lot of help.

  • Converting to DNG but saving the original sequence # of image

When I am shooting, I keep a log of what I shot using the sequence number assigned my camera. When I convert to DNG and rename my images and renumber, is there a way to keep the original numbers visible so that I can easily refer to them so that the data can be input easily? Otherwise transcribing the information from my logs will be tedious.

Yes, the DNG converter will keep the "document name" plus allow the addition of numbering (right side , top box and menu).
I always keep camera original name but add subject name to that on import into LR. When clients want dngs along with their originals, then it is a simple matter to add enumeration, among several choices, in a renaming process.
I should add that I do NOT use the dng convertor within LR. I prefer the standalone convertor, because it can be working in the bkg while I continue work in LR. Dng conversions are not exactly fast.
I should also add that I discourage clients from using DNGs unless they use cameras that receive little support in most apps. I have had unexplained troubles doing 1:1 preview rendering in LR with some dngs. That may be my configuration, or it may be something in LR.

  • LR2 - Auto Import develop settings won't stick.

As the subject says, in LR2 changes made to the develop settings preference in the auto import settings dialogue do not stick. I can select a different develop preset, but after closing the settings dialogue, new images import with the original preset. If I open the settings window again, the develop settings preference has been reset to their original state.
I've tried two computers and have the same result on both. Trashing prefs does nothing, but creating a new catalog seems to reset the auto import prefs dialogue, but whatever develop settings I select becomes fixed and unchangeable.
I use LR's auto import feature to work tethered with my MF digital setup on every project - it is crucial to my current workflow. This bug is small, but significant and will probably have me going back to V1 until I can find a fix so any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Andy
(oh yeah, both systems are intel macs -- an iMac and a macbook pro -- and are up to date running osX 10.5.4)

Yes, I get the same thing with the sliders being greyed out. Funny thing is that the sliders *are* set exactly as in my preset and when I click 'yes update' to 2010 standards, the settings don't change but only the sliders become accessible. The thing is that I really don't want to be doing that with every import, even if you can do the whole batch at once. What I don't understand is that when I import with the preset turned off and apply it in Lightroom's Develop Module, it accepts it without a problem but that when I use the same preset on import, it won't work properly.
Now what the poster in the other thread said was:
"When I saved a new preset and selected to also save the process version,  a line in the preset was created:  ProcessVersion = "5.7".  When I cut  and paste that into all my other presets then the sliders were all  active when I used them."
I have no idea what he is talking about or how one would do that. When I create a preset I simply click the + sign and in the pop up window select what I want, give it a name and that's it.
Edit: Sorry, I apparently overlooked the Process Version box in the preset panel! Must have been a case of not seeing the forest for the trees. Problem solved. Thanks.
