Auto Lens Correction?

Is it really necessary to perform lens correction manually on every image in Lightroom4? I have checked the enable box and also included lens correction in my set up file. It seems to me that when photos are downloaded or even after they are downloaded the lens correction should be automatic across the board, especially since I primarily use only three Canon L lenses for 80% of my shooting. Yet, no matter whatI do, I cannot get the correct lens recognition and adjustment automatically and am forced to do each photo one at a time which is seriously time consuming. Suggestions and solutions would be very much appreciated. And, yes, I have read Adobe set up instructions, etc. but there does not seem to be any description of how to accomplish this. I am using DNG files.

No, it is not necessary to do this individually. You can do it automatically in two ways.
One is to use a custom camera default. You turn on "Enable Profile Corrections" for 1 image, then choose Set Default Settings... from the Develop menu. Then all future images will have the Enable Profile Corrections box enabled by default (and hence profile-based lens corrections). This is what I do.
A second way is to use a Develop preset (in which the Enable Profile Corrections box is enabled), and choose that when you Import (in the Import dialog).

Likely by design. As I recall, the iPhone 4 does not contain EXIF camera model metadata that distinguishes it from earlier iPhone models (e.g., the Make = Apple, the model = iPhone).

Has Adobe listed all the lenses for which they have incorporated lens profiles to correct distortion, CA, etc. for their Lens Correction Filter in PS CS5 ? I such a list exists, where can it be found ?

Good info - makes sense where the end user downloads profiles based on the lenses they possess. But then will that also mean that profiles released when CS6 is introed will not be compatable with CS5 ?? That sure would be a bummer - Will it be similar to how Adobe handles Camera and ACR Camera Profiles compatability issues where with the purchase of a new camera the user is forced to upgrade to new verson of PS ?

What has happened to auto correction in Lens correction filter CS6?

Hi. When I try to apply lens correction in Auto Lens correction it is greyed out. Why is it not recognising my camera and lens which it does in CS5?

Thank you Peter. I appreciate your help but it is not viable. I translate huge document with amount of styles. My computer is set up in English so when I open a new document default language is English.
I mark the text I want to translate as Spanish and start out. The texts are not complicated and have a lot of repeatings. For instance all motors in a factory project may be assigned: "Explosin proof type".
I have untill recently just copy-pasted this into Edit & Replace, translated into Spanish and replaced this sentence throughout the whole document.
Know Pages is correcting what I paste into the field. It is no longer "Explosin proof type" but has changed into "Explosin proof tupe".
If it works I can translate maybe 500 positions in one document with only a few operations.
Does anyone know how to take "Spelling Auto Correction" off in the Edit & Replace part.

Batch processing lens correction in LR3

What is the best way to apply the auto lens correction to already imported images in LR3?

Is it possibe to do auto lens correction during the import process?

1. Select desired images, go to Develop, and click the "Enable Profile Corrections" checkbox in the Lens Corrections panel.
Note that you will need Auto Sync enabled for this to work. In Develop, on the right panel, there is a "Sync..." button with a little switch to its left. If you click that switch, that will enable the Auto Sync feature, and the button will be renamed to show this.
2. Yes, make a preset. Namely, pick an image and turn on profile-based lens corrections (see previous step). Go to Develop menu and choose New Preset... In the ensuing dialog box, check the "Lens Corrections" box (and whichever other boxes you want to be included in the preset). When you import your images, select this as your Develop preset. This will cause lens corrections to be applied to all images that are imported.

Lens Correction filter not working?

I upgraded to CS5 specifically to use the auto lens correction feature (primarily for barrel and pincushion distortion on my Canon zoom lenses). Now I find that:
Even though the camera back (5D Mark II) and lens information is included with an image, the lens correction filter requires me to manually select the back and lens.
Several of my lenses are not even included in the data base, even though they're very popular lenses (e.g., EF16-35mm 2.8 L USM II and EF 70-300mm DO IS USM). I realize the data base is to be enlarged, but these seem like inexplicable omissions. (And I have no desire or time to create my own profiles.)
The PDF instruction manual for CS5 offers no help, and I don't see this issue addressed in the forums. I'm hoping someone will be able to advise me on how to make this function work.

   Thanks for the quick answer, but I still think the menu is misleading.
   If the body choices were in the format of "full frame, 1.3 crop, 1.6
crop, etc.", it would be clear that the specific model didn't matter.
However, this would create its own problems since many people wouldn't
understand the concept of the crop factor for their camera.
   The fact that the 5D Mark II exists in the pull-down menu as a discrete
choice in addition to the 1Ds Mark III implies that there is a difference
between the two. Even if there is no functional difference in this context,
it would avoid confusion if the actual body from the EXIF information could
always be the default selection.

In LR3, I can't seem to load the auto lens correction profiles for my Canon lenses, many of which should be readily available. I used the 24-70L 2.8 USM lens and the 50mm 1.4 lenses on a recent shoot and the profiles can't be found. Is there a place to download the stock LR3 profiles to enable this option? I'm not that interested in making custom profiles at this time.

The lens profiles coming from Adobe should be installed automatically when installing LR, no need to install them seperately. You can check for files named

These are the profiles provided by Adobe for the lenses you mention. If they are there, something seems to be wrong in LR recognizing your lens. If they're not, try reinstalling LR3.

Lens corrections : auto-correction for rectangular subjects

I have used lens corrections manual "vertical"+"horizontal"+"rotate" sliders
to render rectangular paintings shot off-axis (transform trapezoids into rectangles).
Very cool - but time consuming !
My request is an auto-correction for rectangular subjects :
set rectangular mode, click pointer on each corner (4), hit enter and "voila" :
"vertical"+"horizontal"+"rotate" sliders auto-adjust !
(I think there's only one solution to the problem)
Do I have any support ?

Just for "fun",
take an off-center picture of a rectangular poster
and monitor how long it takes to get a good enough
rectangular view in LR3 (cropped).
Can be played with friends... !

Auto scale/crop with lens correction tool in Camera Raw 8.4

Does anyone know if this type of functionality exists in Camera Raw 8.4 similar to the Auto scale function in the lens correction filter? I understand the straighten tool offers this effect but I'm looking for in auto crop or autoscale feature when using the lens correction tool. Thanks in advance!

Functionality of default, Auto & custom choices in Lens correction panel?

Can anyone explain how to use the choices in the lens correction panel when you choose profile then enable lens corrections? The three choices are default, auto & custom. It seems that if you choose auto it should be doing something but I can't see anything different. I have created 5 lens profile for my Pasnasonic DMC-FZ-50 at 5 different focal lengths and these show up in the panel and are functional. I have looked in the help section and can't find out what these choices mean or how to use them. thanks

Auto will pick the lens based on the lens ID saved into the file when you took the shot, not the focal length, aperture, etc. If it cannot find a lens that matches that lens ID it won't pick anything, even if you have manually saved a lens as the default. As I wrote earlier, you can make any lens the default, but Auto will only use a perfect match for the lens.

How to Save Camera Calibration and Lens Correction in Camera raw 6.1

I downloaded and installed the Camera Raw 6.1 release candidate. I open an image and set the camera calibration and the lens correction to auto for Nikon. I save these settings as new Camera raw defaults, but when I open other images, the changes were not made. How can I save these items as defaults?

Swila, were your "other images" previously edited in Camera Raw? I.e., do they already have saved image settings? The defaults that you save via the flyout menu will only apply to new images, or if you reset an existing image to the defaults. (e.g., choose "Camera Raw Defaults" from the flyout menu).

Lens Correction and JPEGs

Hi,
I'm new to LR. I've spent the last two months watching every tutorial, practicing with a portfolio/video instructional off the Adode site and reorganizing my own photos and folders on my computer.
I finally took the "bold" step to put a few of my photos into LR. All my photos are from either a Nikon 3000 or 3100 with the same lens AF-S DX Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED.
Also, all my photos are JPEGs.
1) In Lens Correction > Profile > Enable Profile Correction there are 3 options
Default (no make/model options)
Auto (no make/model options)
Custom > when I click this I get the model and Adobe profile for the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED
Is the Adobe profile the same for both lenses? The 14-24 and the lens on my camera - the 18-135?
Default and Auto look the exact same. If I click Custom, the image becomes a little more exposed. To my eye, Default/Auto look better.
2) Also, should I "check" chromatic aberration for all my photos? I'm not sure how this feature works in LR with JPEGs.
3) Considering where I am and my skills at this point, what is the best recommendation going forward, for learning LR and working with my JPEGs.
Since I'm going to be essentially working only with JPEGS for a while, what lens correction should I use with these photos? Default/Auto/Custom?
4) Are there any other settings that I need to pay attention to with the camera/lens/file type that I am using while trying to learn LR?
I'm starting to realize from my readings, that JPEGS will have a more limited range of development in LR and "LR will display only the profiles available for the file type of the selected image." Lens profile support | Lightroom 5, 4, 3 | Photoshop CS6, CS5 | Camera Raw 8, 7, 6
I want to become a more serious amateur and enthusiastic photographer, but I also don't want to spend 15 minutes editing/developing every semi-decent photo I take.
As an aside, my 3100 has a shutter problem, so I will be upgrading at some point (probably Micro 4/3) and I plan to explore shooting RAW or a combination of RAW/JPEG somewhere down the road.

As I understand lens correction profiles, most are written for RAW photos only, and there are only a few profiles written for JPGs. That would explain why you don't see your specific lens under Custom.

I'm certainly not the biggest expert on chromatic aberration, but it seems to me that the chromatic aberration algorithms are looking for certain types of coloration at "edges", and I don't see why that would be different for JPGs compared to RAWs.
But I'm confused by the actual question ... checking the box and seeing if it makes the photo better seems so simple that I don't really understand why you had to ask the question.

Again, the learning process in Lightroom is ... just do it. You can't harm your photos, you can always undo whatever you did that you didn't like. The lens correction you choose is the one that makes the photo's appearance look best to you.

Any setting and any slider and any tool might be the right one for your photo. There is no general setting that EVERYONE uses, as the reason software provides options is that some people want it one way, and other people want it a different way.

The learning curve can be difficult, but as I said, editing your photos will never harm your originals, and you can always undo whatever you did. So ... just do it.
I am concerned that even as a beginner, you think it might take you 15 minutes to edit a single photo. Unless you are doing a HUMONGUS amount of brushing, this should never take 15 minutes, even for a beginner. Yes, of course if you want everything to be absolutely PERFECT, then it will take longer, but there really is no such thing as a PERFECT photo. Your goal ought to be (in my opinion) making the photos look GOOD, and learning what the sliders and tools do as you go. And certainly there is no unique determination of what a GOOD photo is, a photo that looks GOOD to you may not look good to someone else, but that's kind of irrelevant, its your photo, it should only matter that it looks GOOD to you.
You said you watched tutorials, are these tutorials helping, or not? Do you feel you have learned the basic purpose of (some of) the develop sliders and develop tools, or not?

LR 4.3 lens corrections issue (bug?)

I'm having trouble with LR 4.3 lens corrections panel, that I didn't have with LR 4.2.
I'm running LR 64bit on Windows 7 Ultimate. Camera is Pentax K5.
This is what the lens corrections panel looks like after import in LR 4.2. I did setup the "Enable Profile Corrections" as default for my camera, so everytime I import photo's this is autmatically checked.
Opening the same photo in the same catalog with LR 4.3 this is what I get:
Notice "Setup" has changed to "Custom" and Lens Profile says None.
Changing Setup to Default again, Make and Model display the correct information, but Profile says None.
Clicking on the Profile arrows gives me the correct lens profile but...
... selecting that profile turns everything back off and setup is changed to Custom again.
Now setting Setup to Default makes no difference! Lens Profile displays None but...
... selecting Auto gives me the right Make and Model!!
And finally, when I leave the image with settings as here above, go the another photo and change the lens corrections, and then go back to the initial image, everything's gone again!!!
As far as I'm concerned, this is a serious bug, unless I'm missing something obvious.
Did anyone have this same problem?
I've downgraded to LR 4.2 again, and everything is back to normal.

No, that's not it either. Lens Corrections appears in the right panel, between "Detail" and "Effects".
It's just that when I click on the "make" under the Lens profile, all I get is Nikon and Sony (and not the other brands I used to see) and under model there is only one lens if I remember correctly...
This is frustrating, and it will be more so if it turns out that I did something silly!!

Lens correction settings in LR3

Hi guys! I have downloaded LR3 yesterday and played with trial version for a few hours now. Looks like a very welcome upgrade over the 2.x version. However I cannot fully appreciate the way lens corrections module is supposed to work.
I am a nikon user with 28-75 Tamron lens. After setting "custom" lens correction profile and choosing Tamron as lens manufacturer, LR3 accurately suggests my lens model and assigns an existing adobe profile. So far so good. But there is one thing that keeps me from feeling all happy and excited about this new feature: Lightroom would not allow to save different default settings for various focal lengths. For instance, the named above 28-75/2.8 tamron lens has somewhat considerate barrel type distortion at 28mm, and at the same time at its maximum of 75mm geometry distortions are almost non-existent. So while I am happy with how LR3 handles the wide angle distortions, it makes things a lot worse with telephoto range when I apply default lens corrections.
Hence the question: can I somehow make settings in lens corretions module specific to the focal length used? Of course, I would like LR to do that for me, but since it cannot, is there any walkaround? Tweaking settings for each shot is time consuming, and I see no reason not to make this process a little bit more automated.

Adani2, I have encounter similar problems with the same lens on my Canon 1D Mark III (a 1.3x crop camera).
The quick answer to your question is no. There is no setting in Lightroom that allows for correction at a specific focal length, apparently the software is suppose to automatically determine that. I use to have a D80 with the Tamron 28-75 before I switched to Canon. So I decided to process a few shots with LR3 to see if your problem was the same as what I encountered on my 1D3.
I used LR3's lens correction on three pictures, each a different focal length (28, 40, and 75). At the extreme ends, I found 28 and 75 to not vary much from the same image corrected with PTLens (the current progam I use to correct lens distortions). However, at 40 I ran into the same cropping and over correction problem I did with my Canon 1D (albiet it is much worse on the 1D than the D80). Below is a picture taken at 40mm (f2.8) with the Tamron 28-75 on my old Nikon D80 with the "corrected" image overlayed on top (opacity 50%):

Interestingly, the difference between PTlens and the original image for the above shot is virtually zero which is consistant with reviews about this lens (http://www.photozone.de/nikon--nikkor-aps-c-lens-tests/291-tamron-af-28-75mm-f28-sp-xr-di- ld-aspherical-if-nikon-lab-test-report--review?start=1). Why LR3 believes there is distortion when there isn't any is rather perplexing.
My suggestion, for this lens on a crop body, would be to not bother making any lens corrections except for critical pictures (e.g. architecture) taken around 28mm. The distortions for this lens are, for all practical purposes, negligible on cropped camera bodies.

Lightroom - Lens Correction - Lens Manufactuer unknown

I have a Canon Rebel XTi and shoot in Raw. I have 3 Tamron lenses - a 10-24, 17-50 and 18-270.
I thought I'd try out the lens correction profile for my 10-24 for a few pics, but when invoking the option, it was unable to determine the len manufacturer. Though as soon as I selected 'Tamron' it then knew which lens I was using.
Should my metadata have capture the lens manufactuer?
Is there something I am missing?
Given they are all Tamron - can I set some sort of default so I don't have to select Tamron for every picture?

If you cannot get the right lens profile assigned using the Set Default method described in earlier posts (for example, if two different lenses that you use are identified exactly the same by LR's reading of the image metadata, so that it cannot distinguish them automatically) then it can be helpful to record the manual assignment of a given lens profile, into a Develop preset for easier application to images in the future.
To reiterate, it is enough that Lr's lens detection operates as a unique identifier, that can cause the particular correction profile to be used which you have stipulated; the actual lens description does not strictly need to be correct for the lens, in order for this to happen automatically, per image, at import or subsequently.
So a general Develop preset or default which turns on lens corrections just needs to activate the profile checkbox, and in the Profile: selector, show "Default". Then LR uses whatever it has been told is the right default for each Lens ID encountered, which may derive from its originally installed list, or else from what the user has later assigned.
A specific preset applying a particular lens profile for cases where auto detection doesn't work, will instead apply this explicitly, set as "Manual".
For example, I use some older, pre-digital Pentax lenses which have no ID chip, and report to LR as just "A series lens" or else "K or M lens" - because all the camera can do, is detect whether or not these older lenses have an auto aperture. So with those, I can use LR to filter them down by focal length (prime lenses), to help me rapidly apply a Develop preset which picks out the correct profile for each individual lens. The camera asks me for the focal length whenver it detects a legacy-mount lens has been fitted, so that it can correctly apply shake reduction, so that info is at least recorded against each image. But: most of the time, I use only one A series lens and only one M series lens, so I have LR set to "presume" the A/28 profile for the former, and the M/135 profile for the latter, unless told otherwise. I only have to intervene as described in the exceptional case, when I know I have used some other lens sharing the same class of legacy mount.
The same principles apply when third-party lens makers use ambiguous Lens IDs even for modern chipped lenses, where these codes may span across multiple, different lens models indiscriminately.
