Auto level sound- what's happening!?

Hi all-
here's a curious thing: when I play a DVD with DVD Player the sound behaves as if there is somekind of 'auto-level' i.e. if there's a scene playing and a door slams, or someone claps their hands etc, the audio track goes very quiet and then comes slowly back to full volume. It's as if there's somekind of 'limiter' or automatic adjustment turned on somewhere. I think it's doing the same thing in iTunes as well but it's harder to be sure - I'll try and find something thats quiet and suddenly goes loud and post the result. In the meantime, can anyone suggest a solution to this very irritating problem!!
Thanks,
Andy

Hey Andrew,
To fix your issue with DVD player, go to the DVD Player menu, then preferences, then disc setup, then at the bottom check "Disable Dolby Dynamic Range Compression." If the same thing is occuring in iTunes as well, go to its preferences, click the playback tab, and make sure that "Sound Check" is off. If it is on, then that may be your problem with iTunes. Sorry it took me so long to get to this post. Good Luck!

Very many thanks Niel. My problem solved in less than five minutes. I've never had to use that command before. I found the folder and copied it - but I'm still no clearer as to where it was!

  • UNDO_TABLESPACE=AUTO  and UNDO_TABLESPACE='' What happens?

If UNDO_TABLESPACE=AUTO and UNDO_TABLESPACE='' What happens after instance startups?
I am citing on-line doc '...When the instance starts up, Oracle automatically selects for use the first available undo tablespace. This is not recommended in normal circumstances, and an alert message is written to the alert file to warn that the system is running without an undo tablespace...'
    Questions :
    1. If database has no undo tablespace avalilable and instance use SYSTEM rollback segment. Is it possible apply UNDO_* parameters to the SYSTEM rollback segment?
    2. Database has undo tablespaces, but still UNDO_TABLESPACE=''(UNDO_TABLESPACE parameter is set to empty). Will instance use any of undo tablespaces first?
    Thank you in advance.

    If the need to know this is dire it is possible to find file extent events via dump of the redo log files using alter system dump logfile '/some/logfile' layer 14 opcode 4;
By reviewing the output you can find the file extensions but for an ongoing requirement create a snapshot of dba_data_files and update it daily or on another schedule depending on your needs.
There might be something in the AWR but using the AWR requires a Performace Pack License which is an extra cost so I generally do not have access to it so I have never looked close enough to know if any useful extent information is there. It will have a limited life so rolling your own is still probably your best long-term solution but the source of the data could change.

    Hey mommy2aka,
    Welcome to the forums!
Sounds like you are having a software issues. Try to back up and complete a clean reload of the device software as shown here http://bbry.lv/cG8oer. I would also recommend  testing  before restoring data taht way you know if you have corrupt data on the device.

  • My Macbook Air 13" sound isn't working. What is happening?

Helpppppppppp I don't know what's happening and it's not on mute and the sound is all the way up.

Long time Mac user here. First thing I check was the settings in the SysPrefs->Sound->output. No Joy. I had iTunes running in the background. Did kill iTunes then went back to SysPrefs, again no joy. Logged out then logged back in, still no joy. Restarted did "fix" but that's a crazy solution.
Resetting the firmware is a bit over the top. Unless you are having major hardware issue shouldn't reset the firmware. It should be used as a last resort type of effort.
    I'm thinking that it's a iTunes issue.
@katze1314 - Where you running iTunes in the background?

  • Leopard for G4 867mhz or above. What would happen on G4-400mhz?

what would happen installing Leopard on less than a G4-867mhz?
Would it work but be too slow for apple to be confortable supporting?
Or do those machine lack hardware support?

I'm not really a fan of old OS's, programs, or cobbled machines that I've built. They did the job, but I kept saving my money for better results.
Most of the G4's, expecially the iMac's can not be upgraded with anything but ram. Your done. Some people are trying to get Leopard to run on 400 mhz G4 iMacs with their included video cards and chips on the motherboards. Now if you're talking about a tower like my Dual G4 1.42 Ghz then you're right, I've already added all of the hardware I wanted, including the ram, video, USB2, bluetooth and gigabit ethernet. But I started with a very capable machine that was worth upgrading. The limit here is the speed of the motherboard bus, and the slower G4's should be just put out as a Tiger game machines and save your upgrade money for a new iMac. I've moved the old machine into a back office to run Leopard server, and got the wind tunnel out of my workspace. When the ATI 9800 pro video card bit the dust because of a fan failure, I just put the original card back in and don't need the high end video on a headless server.
The upgrades I did were to keep my production machine up to speed for a couple of extra years, but those years are long past, and my MBP and iMac's run rings around it for less money. Every Mac I ever bought before the Intel Mac's cost $3000 plus upgrades. These new $1100 to $1400 machines blow them away. I played with drop-in CPU's from Newer Technology in the past (they only cost 3 or 4 hundred), and they worked for a short time, but invariably I needed to run special patches from the vendor to be able to even install the later OS's.
I'm not sure what you mean when you say you didn't touch the hardware at all. It seems like you changed everything that wasn't soldered to the motherboard (except the CPU and maybe ethernet). It sounds like you've been able to buy your way up to it's present level, piecemeal. OK. The fact that you got an older machine to run faster than it did has nothing to do with how fast or reliable a machine made in the last 3 or 4 years will run, natively, supported by Apple with all updates and drivers, video improvements, built-in camera's, etc. All of the improvements you made, and much more are already available with much higher performance on the new iMac's. There are so many people who believe that Leopard will speed up their computers just by installing the OS. They should have just stayed with Tiger and got Leopard with their new machine, just like the millions of Vista users who expected speed for nothing.
WinXP will run on an early slow 486 processor. You'll save a lot of money if you do it. What's the point? I don't buy computers based on how little I have to spend to get work done (that's the PC mentality that drives me nuts as I wait for the machine and the hour glass to get back to me). I buy them based on how much work I can get done. When a program's developers decide not to upgrade or patch their program for the new OS or architecture I bid them a fond farewell and move to a company who makes products that perform well with my new machines. These machines and existing programs do not improve with age and developers who want to sit on their laurels and reap income from old work just seem to fade away. Adobe and MS are doing their best to write better code, as are thousands of independent programmers.
It's time for Snow Leopard to re-establish MacOS as a performance OS Leopard is only marginally better than Tiger even on Intel CPU's due to being dumbed down and bloated with legacy code. Losing the PPC processor and compatibility code will improve MacOS measurably.
Programs that won't run on SL, and machines that can't run it need to go away (make it into a fax server or contact management work station or something useful). As long as I can get to the machine on the network, it has value, just not for production.
    Sorry, just wrote another chapter

I just got it back from the apple store and they reset it (becuase it kept shutting down and not turning back on).
I put in a new password because i needed to start over from factory settings, but now it doesnt let me log in anymore. (I don't know if this is because it doesnt accpet my password, or I forgot my password in less than 5 minutes, or because when i typed in my new password, i typed it in wrong twice)
Command R doesnt work, all i hear is a sound, but nothing happens.

What I don't understand is why it is rejecting a password I am creating.
Perhaps the password you are creating is too short, or has characters that are not allowed, or is not secure enough because it is a word in a dictionary.
FileVault may have standards for what it considers an acceptable password. If the password is part of the 128-bit encryption scheme, it might have to be 16 characters, for example. (Don't know if that is true, but it's a possibility.) Check your documentation for password requirements.

  • I just purchased a new Mac and I am trying to download my previously purchased songs.   I am only getting a portion of each song though.  What is happening and how do I fix it?

I just purchased a Mac and downloaded my previously purchased songs from iTunes, however it only downloaded a portion of the song (about 1:15) and this appears to be the same on all of the songs.   What is happening and how can I fix it?

    Hello Pork Chop 2,
Congratulations on your new Mac!  It sounds like your purchased songs are not playing completely after you downloaded them.  I recommend to following steps for an issue like this:
    Symptoms
Occasionally, if a song purchased from the iTunes Store on a Mac or PC was not downloaded completely, the song may not play back fully. The song may abruptly stop during playback, and iTunes may start playing the next song in your library or playlist.
    Resolution
If iTunes in the Cloud is available in your country, try the following steps to resolve the issue:
Delete the purchased song that is exhibiting the problem from your iTunes library.
Click on the Purchased link in the iTunes Store to view your previously purchased music.
Download your previously purchased song from this list.
You can find the full article here:

But how come he's getting some of my messages? That's weird I don't want him knowing what I'm sending -.-
I have the iPhone 4S up-to-date and so does he so why can he see my messages? I Know for a fact that I'm not sending them to him so what's happening? And I restored it as well any ideas?

Did you skip a step in this description?  Which laptop was involved in the setup of the second iPhone?  Also, check which Apple ID is active in the "iTunes & App Store."  You may have set up a separate Apple ID, but it sounds like yours is the one entered on the iPhone.

  • What's happening to my MacBook?!?!?!

My MacBook recently starting acting funny.
Two days ago, I'm using it and it just completely shut off. I pressed the power button to turn it on again, I heard the startup chime, then I heard a "click" and it shut off again (no it wasn't the CD drive). This happened like 10 times but started up fine when I plugged it back into the power adapter.
Today, I turned it on and took like 7 minutes for it to boot. Then it showed "Safe Boot" at the login screen. I never pressed anything while booting so how did it boot to "Safe Boot?" So I logged in and I noticed the following:
    1) AirPort is gone... It doesn't show in the menu bar or in the Network option in System Preferences.
    2) No sound! The volume adjuster in the menu bar is gone AND the volume buttons on the keyboad do not work. I went to the Sound tab in System Preferences and it says "No Output Devices Found" and "No Input Devices Found."
    3) The backlight buttons do not work either. If I press it, it just show that it is on the lowest setting and won't move.
Also, My MacBook shut off by itself once today.
I took screenshots but I don't know how to add them to this message so if someone tells me how, I can add screenshots of what is happening.
Anyways, someone please help me with these issues! I have invested a lot in my MacBook and I don't want it to have tons of problems like my iBook did.

Could be your safe mode prevent your device to run, since it boot using the very minimum driver to eliminate and provide more conflict.
From what I read you have an inconsistent battery, and it just shut you off and won't turn back on since it doesn't have anymore juice in it.
Try to calibrate your battery, reset the NV-RAM, and also the PMU.

Hope this simple task will eliminate your problem.

  • What actually happens when you "Manually manage music and videos"?

I'm afraid to try this option on my iPod, and here's why:
I am currently traveling for three months, and before I just left, I synced up my 80GB iPod with all the music I wanted (via playlists) and all my podcasts. I will not have access to my home computer for at least three months. However, I'd like to be able to sync up podcasts whenever I am at a computer that has iTunes installed (friends houses, etc..).
Someone told me I could do this by setting my iPod to "Manually manage...", and just add the podcasts I want, manually. Sounds good, but I'm afraid to try for fear that it will actually reset my iPod which would be disastrous since I don't have access to my music library on my computer.
Can someone reassure me that this won't happen?
    -tanzbodeli

What I meant was, what will happen to the playlists, music, videos and podcasts already on my iPod when I change from 'syncing' my iPod to selecting "Manually manage..."? Will they be wiped out and my iPod given a clean slate, or will they remain there and I can then add to them?

  • MY PC WAS REFORMATTED. WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN I CONNECT MY IPOD TO MY PC NOW

    Hi everyone!
My pc was recently formatted, and now I want to add new songs to my iPod. What will happen to the songs in my iPod when i connect it to the newly formatted PC? (not all songs in my iPod are in my PC anymore).
Is there a way I can get all my songs from my iPod to my PC? If there is a way, would the songs remain organized from the iPod to the PC? Coz I am very organized with my iTunes and iPod, every artist, genre, album title is fixed.
Would the PC automatically update my iPod? I know there is a setting in iTunes where I could choose if iTunes updates my iPod automatically or manually, but I can't seem to find it. I'm afraid to connect my iPod now to my PC because this might erase and foul up my songs in my iPod.
    Thanks and please help.
    Chad

If your iPod is set to update automatically you just need to take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. If it is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it: Managing Your Songs Manually
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Edit>Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box.
You can't sync or drag your music back directly from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    iGadget Windows Only
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for quite a small outlay.
