Auto levels on import preset

I tried a search to see how you can get AP3 to do an "auto levels" adjustment during import, but I am not sure how to do it. If I do an "auto" adjust on an image and then create a preset, does AP3 apply the levels based on that particular file used, or will it actually look at each file individually and make the correct adjustment for each file during the import? Or is there a different way to correctly apply auto levels during import?
Thanks in advance.

this is fairly easy. the only thing you have to do is create an adjustment preset to do just that.
steps:
1-click on an image and go to the Adjustments tab
2-apply auto-levels on that image (and nothing else)
3-in the Presets drop box, choose Save as Preset (Aperture is intelligent enough to remember you've applied the Auto-levels)
4-in the preset management box, give it some name
5-on following imports, just apply this preset to your images on import and voilà.

Is there a way to invoke autoexposure and/or autolevels while importing? Alternatively, can you autoexpose multiple images without clicking on each one individually?

Are you working with images from different cameras or different file types from the one camera?

  • Auto-import Presets

I searched the forum(s) for this request but didn't find anything that seemed relevant, so here goes (and my apologies if this has been requested before or is already available through some option I missed): I use auto-import all the time -- it's a standard part of my workflow for new images from my cameras, whether tethered or not. To cope with the half dozen or so different scenarios and situations that are repeatedly part of those workflows, I'd like to be able to have a pull-down list of named auto-import presets under the auto-import preferences dialog. This would cover things like location the imported files are moved to, canned metadata to be applied, processing, etc. in named configurations.
Not a huge deal, but it'd certainly make my life somewhat easier and less error-prone while out in the field....

I second that. Plus an option just to watch a folder, instead of auto-copy only

  • Cannot disable Auto Tone on import of PSD files - ruins edits !!

Hi -  I am a LR 5  expert and we have an issue with the latest release that I need to overcome or it is unusable.    Please direct this to an expert level support person as I have already networked around and have not been able to resolve this issue.    The issue is consistent with other users as well - we have tried this on several computers and the result is the same.     It is possible that is pilot error but I doubt it - we have disabled apply auto tone everywhere we could find it...
I believe this is a serious bug in the way LR handles files on import  - and I am also hoping there is an immediate work-around as the issue has TRIPLED our workflow time.
Example #1   -   Edit DNG - Export as PSD with "add to catalog" checked -  LR exports the file and then imports the PSD,   but in doing so applies auto tone and destroys all the edits.  The re-imported images are too bright and too contrasty.       Auto tone on import IS disabled.
We tried to work around the issue by trying to edit outside LR and re-importing but that does not work either -SAME RESULT !
Example #2 -   Edit DNG files,  export to PSD,  do not check "add to catalog"  -  make the edits needed in Photoshop,  then  import using "add" and LR applies Auto Tone once again destroying all edits.      You can actually watch the auto tone being applied to the thumbs as it imports them. - they get brighter.
In all cases the edited images end up too bright and too contrasty and are otherwise unusable.        Our workaround is to export to PSD, edit in photoshop,  then use Photoshop's   scripts to produce the final images and leave the PSD files out of the catalog  - this has added a TON of time to our workflow and has corrupted our file management -  UNACCEPTABLE !!
We have also tried reading the external  meta data option - same result - bright files.
Please let us know how we completely disable auto tone on import and fix this issue it is a deal breaker for using this version.   We are using LR 5.6
    Thanks, Mark

Looks like we solved our own problem -   either edit or delete the preferences  files  and restart lightroom.  If you delete it,  it  will of course wipe our your template settings, etc  but that was far less of a hassle than not being able to use LR with PSD / exporting.  We were able to make a simple edit and it was fixed.   Also make sure you have unchecked "apply auto tone" in the >preferences>presets   dialog box - we did not have it checked but it WAS enabled in the plist file.       I would definitely consider this a bug -  the issue was not present in the last version of LR, it was introduced upon installing 5.6.

  • Import Preset Qustion or Request

A general workflow question. This is something that has bothered me about controlling the import workflow but is there anyway to set the import location if your importing from you internal HD. I can understand it was made to behave with importing from the auto detected camera card, but I would really love to be bale to set a general folder location in my import preset my workflow doesn't involve camera cards. I know it holds onto the location from my previous import location but like everything I have to deviate once and a while and I would love to be able to add a general root folder to the preset. I have a feeling no but would love to request this feature in the future.

If you save an Import preset, it remembers the destination (assuming you've used Copy or Move, not Add, which has no destination). By setting the Root Folder, and using One Folder, into Subfolder you can give each Import a new subfolder name as desired, or just use a date structure.

  • How to reverse the auto levels recording to normal levels?

    Hi!
What I want to say is that I have a recording taken with Zoom H1 and the Auto Levels switch was accidentally on. That of course makes the parts of the recording after a pause to start too loud and then when the signal goes to high, makes it too quiet. It's not nice.
Is there a way to level out the recording? It's a speech and I know that it can be done using Speech volume leveler, but I don't want to use that either. What I am interested in is that is there a way to capture a noise print or the print of desired level of audio and then level out the rest of the audio by referencing to the print volume? In other words, reverse the Auto Levels effect back to normal. Is that possible?
    Thanks!

I tried Speech Volume Leveler and the thing that I don't like in my particular situation is that it boosts the quieter signals up to the level of louder ones and that means also boosting noise. It would be nice to do the other way around, that is attenuate the louder signals to match the quieter ones. Is that possible to do with Dynamics Processing? How to do it?
Which version of Audition are you using? There are Advanced options on later versions that allow you to keep the noise down.
But what you are looking foe in Dynamics Processing is the Downward Expander. As an example look for instance at the E. Guitar Gate preset. It is a rather extreme version of what you want to do but gives you some idea where to start.

  • Auto smart fix, auto levels, auto contrast Where on cs4

I have photoshop cs4 and I cannot find the Auto smart fix, auto levels, and auto contrast nor the adjustment for each that I had with photoshop elements.

It's not a matter of version numbers.  Photoshop has never had anything called "Auto Smart Fix".
Photoshop Elements usually contains various watered-down "preset" options for beginner users as opposed to more advanced users using the Full PS.  Options such as the Red-eye Reduction Tool and if you go far enough back Page Curl in Photoshop LE are examples.
If you are refering to versions as the difference between PS Elements and PS or PS Extended then you are correct they do not have "Auto Smart Fix".
Auto Levels and Auto Contrast are available under the IMAGE Menu.  However it looks as though Auto Levels has been renamed as "Auto Tone" in CS4.  Prior to this it was in fact "Auto Levels" through most version numbers of Photoshop.

  • Automating the Auto Levels process

As part of my work flow after importing the files into Aperture and applying meta data I then apply Auto levels to each image in turn, this is a very manual process involving the mouse and the right arrow key to move to the next image, wait for it to be read then press the auto levels button and then right arrow to the next image.
Is there a way to get Aperture to go through all the images in an Album applying the Auto levels command to each image individually.
It may even by by a keystroke macro process if there is such a one for OSX.
I do not want to lift the adjustments from one corrected image and apply them to all the images as this does not reflect the auto needs of each image.
After auto levelling each image I select the images for customised work.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Yes it worked - you have to redefine the action for each time you run aperture as the button for the auto levels function moves around the screen according to where you have the Aperture window.
You also have to allow for Aperture slowing down so you have to build in a delay before pressing the Auto button.
While running this process you cannot run another app that will sit over the Aperture window or take focus from Aperture.
What surprises me is that the two Auto buttons do not have keystroke alternatives. (or at least I could not find them in the documentation)

  • Color Correction Auto Levels results uneven

    Good Mornig,
My Color Correction Auto Levels results are uneven. I applied them to a short clip to Test, and they look fine when they apply...but every now and then there is a flicker for a few frames/seconds and it reverts to original colors. I have a 6month old computer 64bit, 12gigs ram....and it is only a 5 minute clip.
    Any suggestions??
    Thanks in advance

did somemore testing and i think you will be correct.
Why is this?...is it because Auto is "too broad a brush" or my computer doesn't have enough power (12 gigs ram??)
or is it a software weakness.  is this usually the same for other, similar, effects??

  • Import preset problem

A warm welcome to the Import Preset; except I'm having a problem. I have saved a few presets but when I select them only the panels on the right are changed so I see, for example, Add (to) My Catalog and Develop Settings and Metadata are just as I have set them. BUT "Select a Source" says just that, when I'd like it to go to the folder from which I want it to import. BTW there is no card in the reader, this is just an import from a folder into the catalog.
Should the preset "remember" the folder to import from, or have I misunderstood?

No, only the "rest" of Import dialog. The concept is: a preset remembers "how to treat the files you are importing" from any location.

  • Auto level entire image based on selection?

I'm scanning some old magazine pages. But because some clippings are irregular shaped, the bright white of the scanner lid is in the image. So this throws off Auto Levels & Auto Contrast. If I take the marquee tool to select a portion of the image, is there a way to auto level the entire document based on the smaller marquee selected area?

Hmmm... I must be missing a step. Help me out here...
I'm making a selection of the area I want to use for auto levels. I click on the Levels adjustment layer, it creates an Adjustment layer with layer mask. I option-click Auto in the Levels palette -- and it brings up a dialog box. Now what?

  • Flickerring after applying auto levels filter

Don't have enough lighting on my clips. I added the auto levels filter and it looks great, but I notice lots of flickering when there is movement. The flickering did not exist before applying the filter. And when I apply the anti-flicker filter it doesn't seem to do much. Would a software like Avid be better at adding light to a clip? Is there something else I could do with Adobe Premiere CS3 to address this problem?
    Thanks

Don't use Autolevels. You rarely get good results with the easy button
    solution. Use Curves instead.
