Auto lock problem with Shuffle 4th gen.

On power up, automatically enters button lock.
I'm then unable to take off the lock (hold play button for >3 seconds)
I have to switch off, then have a second or 2 to use controls before it locks itself again
Tried Reset/Restore etc. Any suggestions please!

Tried Reset/Restore etc. Any suggestions please!
A restore would have eliminated the possibility of software glitch/error so the problem is more than likely hardware related meaning you'll need to have the Shuffle serviced or replaced.

  • Big problem with my 4th Gen, please help !!!

    Hi guys.
Well I've a big problem with a 4th gen Ipod. The prob is that the Select button on the middle doesn't work.
I've tried everything : Did a reset, a complet restore from Itunes 7, but it was unsuccesful.
I don't really understand the problem, I was using the Ipod normally then suddenly the button didn't work !!
Please help me. In addition, I cannot carry it to the Apple Centre because I live in Algeria.
    Thanks.

    No ideas ???
I've tried to open it as well, I've unplugged all the connectors, cleaned it with alcohol, but the button still not responding.
Do you think that the problem would come from the logic board ?? Because the button itself worked (I used a METRIX to test it), and I can make a reset with no problem (the reset needs the central button).
    Please help me. Thanks.

  • What's wrong? Having problems with a 4th gen nano.

My 4th gen nano's clock is frozen and trying to change the time causes the screen to freeze. Resetting it brings it "back to normal", but the clock's still frozen. The lock hardly works, and the iPod starts playing music randomly. It is not recognized by iTunes or Finder; iTunes seems to eject it before recognizing it or saying it's plugged in. The following error message says that it should be ejected properly and that iTunes/Finder will try to restore it the next time it's connected.
None of the solutions in the Help Center fixed it and the screen's now frozen at "Connected."
Other than that, it's working perfectly fine...

Update: I just put it into Disk Mode, and then it finally showed up in both iTunes and Finder. When I then tried to restore it, error message 1429 popped up. (The iPod then disappeared from both iTunes and Finder.) Following Apple's resolution, I'm supposed to eject it from iTunes, but how am I supposed to do that when it's not showing? The screen says "Do not disconnect."

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Connection problem with iPod Shuffle 4th Gen.

Hello, I have problem with my iPod Shuffle 4th gen. One day i tried as always to turn it on and listen music but i heard only short "info" sound and saw short green diode impulse and nothing else. My computer (windows 7) also can't find it, after plugging it on, ipod's red diode turns on for 5 sec. Any suggestions?

Yes ... pay attention to how and where you clip the shuffle. Moisture can enter the controls if in contact with damp surface, OR can enter through the earphone jack along the earphone wire... positioning the shuffle such that the earphone socket is down will prevent the latter.
I recently discovered that the mode switch on my shuffle is very sensitive and will change from play-in-order to shuffle with a tiny positional movement. Interestingly, that resulted in behavior that, on the surface looked like the shuffle just quit! I normally listen to to audiobooks and other spoken material which are set to NOT be shffled... however , I forgot to set ONE 1/2 hour radio show to not shuffle. When I accidentally nudged the mode switch, the shuffle switched to playing that show. Trying to get bact to the audiobook I had been playing by multiple << presses confused the issue totally since the shuffle now displayed absolutely no indication of the button presses...it behaved as if it were dead! Turning it off and on didn't help either. Since it was dark, I couldn't see that the mode switch was slightly out of its normal play-in-order position, either. I put the shuffle away and soldiered on listening to a different audiobook on my nano.

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely.  Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

    Hey Xxx_Dank_xxX,
Have you ever been able to sync your iPod shuffle to iTunes on your computer, or has something recently occurred?  Are you working with a Mac or a PC?   Without knowing what has been recommended to you, I'm going to start here with the basics troubleshooting for this issue.

  • My ipod shuffle (4th gen) don't works after hard reset with itunes

My ipod shuffle (4th gen) don't works after hard reset with itunes, it don't reads too like USB by Windows.
Before that i've seen error (-50) in iTunes, so i reset ipod.
I've read all tips on this site, but nothing helps me.

No, USB works good. I've tried reset on my friend's PC, and it saw my ipod and reset was done. But when i tried to load music, it wrote me, that i've installed incorrect software.

  • Can I use an ipod shuffle 4th gen charger with an ipod shuffle 2nd generation?

Basically, last week I lost my ipod shuffle (4th gen). ****. so consequently I have bought a second hand 2nd gen shuffle, thinking that the USB - minijack cable would work fine - and it fits perfectly. But my 'new' ipod is not showing up in itunes, and neither is it illuminating...
I spoke to Apple Support, and they suggested plugging it in for an extended period of time, as the battery may be 100% flat, but after an hour still nothing.
    Any ideas, folks?
    Ta!

The USB cable for the 4th gen iPod has a different connector at the iPod end.  This is the replacement part for the one used by the 4th (and 3rd) gen shuffle
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC003ZM/A
and it states at the bottom that it is only compatible with the 3rd and 4th gen shuffle.
This is the replacement part for a second gen shuffle (with a "mini-dock").
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA694G/A
It's somewhat expensive compared to $49 for a brand new shuffle.  There are cheaper third-party replacements (most have just the connector with no dock) available on Amazon and eBay, and elsewhere.  Just make sure it is described as being for the 2nd gen shuffle.

  • Brand New Ipod Shuffle 4th Gen Buttons Don't Work?

I just bought my mum an Ipod Shuffle 4th Gen for Mother's day. I just set it up on the computer, ripped some of her CDs onto iTunes, let the iPod charge a little and synced it up with her songs.
Turned it on, music started - then I pressed the 'next song button'. Nothing happened. Held it for a while to see if it would fast forward. Nope! Tried skip back, tried volume increase/decrease... none of them work. It's only the buttons in the white circle that don't work, everything else seems to be fine. I tried holding the play button to see if the buttons had been locked, but whenever I lock/unlock the buttons it always flashes orange as if they're permanently locked.
I reset the iPod - no luck there. I then went into iTunes and did a factory restore - but the problem persists. We don't have an iTunes store anywhere near us (I'd have just popped in there with it) and I really don't want to have to go down the route of sending it off for a replacement/refund if possible, as this is a gift and I expected it to work out of the box. Is there anything I might be missing, any hints or tips, or does this definitely seem like a hardware issue? At the moment I'm just letting it charge fully before I try again, though I'm not sure that will help.

  • How to Play Overdrive Media Books on an iPod Shuffle 4th Gen

    Hi,
Many libraries use Overdrive Media to manage audio books in various formats.  Once you have downloaded the book to the Overdrive Media Console on your computer, you can then choose to transfer it to a device (such as an iPod or other mp3 player).  When transferring WMA files with an iPod shuffle 4th Gen (I'm not sure about other gens) this creates a number of files with bizzare titles.  When you go to the book section on the iPod it will play the first section and then it will just continually loop and you never go on to the next section.  After working with this for a while I've figured out how to make this work.  This is not what I consider a satisfactory solution but more of a work-around.  I hope that Apple will produce a fix that will remedy this situation as a lot of people download audio books from the library.
    1.  When you transfer WMA audiobook content to your iPod, Overdrive Media does it via iTunes.  I believe it usese iTunes to perform a file conversion.  Once the conversion is complete, it transfers the converted file to your shuffle.  If you watch this occur, you will notice that while it is converting the file, it assigns it a strange number like 10347.  As each part of the book is transferred, write down its number.  You have to catch it during the conversion as once the part is converted it reverts to its title (something like "Where the Red Fern Grows Part 01").  But that title is never transferred to the iPod.  It retains the strange number.
    2.  You will notice that as each file is converted, the number goes up.  So as you write them down, they will look like 10347, 11671, 12003, 12865... etc.  I have no idea what these numbers mean but they become your section titles on the audio when the Voiceover button is pressed.  One other thing, sometimes the numbers restart like so:  18567, 19325, 345, 907... Again, not sure why but you must keep the order they were converted and transferred as this is the order in which you'll want to play them back.
    3.  Now you will have a list of numbers indicating the different parts of the book.  Turn on your iPod and use the Skip Forward button to until you hear the book start.  Listen to the fist section until you hear it start to repeat.  There will be no pause or anything so sometimes it is hard to pick up where the part ended.  Once the part has ended, hold the Voiceover button and listen to the strange number.  Next press the Skip Back button and listen to the other strange numbers which will be in order, last-to-first.  When you get to the number indicating the next part, press the Play button and you will now be on the next part.
NOTE: if you press the play button on the wrong part (strange number), it will shuffle that part to the end of the playlist.  But if you have the part numbers written down in order this won't be a problem.  Also, if you hit the forward skip or backwards skip while playing a part, it will skip to some place in that part.  You can get back to your original spot by skipping again a few times more in the same direction.
    EXAMPLE:
Let's say you are transferring a 4 part book to the iPod.  During this transfer you note the strange numbers during conversion like so:
    Part 1 = 11278
    Part 2 = 11942
    Part 3 = 12512
    Part 4 = 13398
Now your book is on the Shuffle.  Turn on the Shuffle and listen for the start of the book.  If it is playing something else like music or a podcast, press the Skip Forward button until you hear the audiobook begin.  This is usually accompanied by music and has the title of the book, etc.  At this point you can press and hold the Voiceover button and you will hear "11278" pronounced.  Release the Voiceover button and let this part of the book play to the end.
You will then at some point hear that part of the book start over.  Press and hold the Voiceover button and start using the Skip Back button.  You will hear in this order: "11278, 13398, 12512, 11942".  When you hear "11942" press the Play button and Part 2 of the book will begin.  Continue this process for each part until you reach the end of the book.
I've listened to several books using this method and it has worked fine.  It is sort of fiddly and you have to do some things that I think iTunes or the Shuffle should do but until Apple does something about this, it is the only way that it will work that I've been able to find.
    Regards,
    medinabrett

It sounds like the Windows Media security update in Para x, below, may not have been done and your music setting may have been on Repeat.  As a review, here is a list of steps that may help clear the problems up.
Many libraries worldwide now use Overdrive Media Console, which comes in Mac an Windows versions http://www.overdrive.com/Software/omc .  Some find the mobile device transfer process confusing.  To load or delete a WMA or MP3 (Macs can only download MP3 books) audiobook onto an Apple mobile device see the "How to Transfer to a Portable Device" video in the guides at Step 7, then do the following.
    1. For Windows versions, you must first do a security update of Windows Media Player (even though you won't be using it) using Internet Explorer at http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/indivsite .
    2.  Open iTunes, plug the mobile device into the computer USB port and open the Overdrive Media Console.
    3. Highlight the mobile device in the left hand menu of iTunes and insure the "Manually manage music and videos" box is checked in the Summary Tab. If the mobile device storage is full, transfering will delete that portion of music necessary for the ebook.
    4. Highlight the book you want to transfer in the Overdrive Media Console and click the Transfer Button.   A window opens permitting you to click the boxes for parts of the book you wish to transfer.
    5. After the book has been transfered, when you click the disclosure triangle (arrow) to the left of the iPod, iPhone, or iPad in the Device section of the left hand menu of iTunes, MP3 books will show up under the Music subsection and WMA books will show up in the Books subsection.  Once the mobile device is disconnected from iTunes, MP3 books will show up in the Songs list of the mobile device and WMA books will show up in the Books list.
    6. To remove a book from a mobile device plug the device into the USB port and open iTunes. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of your iPod, iPhone, or iPad in the Device section of the left hand menu of iTunes so that you can see the device’s subcontents. For an MP3 book select the Music subsection, right click on the book and choose Delete.  For a WMA book, select the Book subsection, right click on the book and choose Delete.
    7. The Overdrive Media Console Guided Tour (videos) is at http://www.overdrive.com/Solutions/Libraries/tour/MenuWelcome.html .  The "Portable Devices" and "How to Transfer to a Portable Device" videos are there.
    8. To find a nearby library for ebooks search http://search.overdrive.com .  You can download the software, search for books and see tutorials without an account at the website of any library that uses Overdrive, however, you need a library card to download books.  At this library site, for example, the software and guided tour are at the bottom of the left hand menu.

  • Brand new and corrupted ipod shuffle 4th gen.

i have a new ipod shuffle 4th gen which isnt working with itunes. This is the replacement for my original one which we had the same problem with and apple support deemed it faulty. But surely we wouldnt be that unlucky to get two in a row that are faulty? There must be another explanation.
We are using a Macbook Pro running OS X 10.6.8 (and the software is up to date with no available updates). The connection with the headphone jack->USB cable is flush and 'clicks' into place. We have the latest version of itunes and we have even updated it again today after recieving the replacement ipod. When we plug the ipod into the USB the light initially goes green and then flashes orange (is trying to sync as far as i can tell) and itunes then comes up with a message that the ipod appears corrupted and to restore the ipod.
So we restore the ipod, still no good. Manually reset the ipod, still no good. Tried both USB ports, no change. The ipod is seen by the computer in system profiler under USB so I dont think its an issue with the cable. When I plug in the headphones I get the usual message to load music to the ipod shuffle via itunes. Our old ipod (nano 4th gen) works fine with itunes and we have no trouble syncing.
I wonder if it is that we are temporarily living in europe at the moment. Macbook Pro (and ipod nano) bought in Australia, and ipod shuffle bought locally (germany) via apple online store as the local stores didnt have them in stock but online was in stock. We didnt think this would be an issue but maybe it is the problem (I would have thought they would all be generic and only the packaging/instructions etc would change depending on sale location and language, especially considering the voiceover telling me to load music via itunes is an american voice speaking english, not speaking german). Also as we are new in germany we dont know anyone to test it out with on another computer. If we did find someone who could test it with (hoping maybe a work collegue might be able to help), would they also have to be running a Mac or would a PC running windows cause more issues?
Any suggestions on what to try before we go back to apple customer support once again.

    Hello Docrwm,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know you have already completed some great troubleshooting steps for this situation where your iPod shuffle is not appearing in iTunes and not charging. There are a couple of different troubleshooting steps that I may recommend in this case. First, if you have not completed all of the enclosed steps, I would recommend working through the troubleshooting steps in the following article.
iPod not appearing in iTunes - Apple Support
If the issue continues after the above troubleshooting, I would suggest working through the iPod shuffle Troubleshooting Assistant.

  • Ipod shuffle 4th gen charges plays but doesnt show up in windows or itunes

Ipod shuffle 4th gen charges plays but doesnt show up in windows or itunes tried to check usb driver but computer says it is working properly

Just disconnecting it without ejecting should not cause permanent damage.  It may cause data corruption, if iTunes was in the process of syncing at the time.  But iTunes should still see the shuffle and (maybe) tell you to Restore it.
Is it possible that the "accident" damaged the USB cable?
Make sure you have done this on the shuffle since the problem occurred
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1655
And you should also shut down (power off) the computer, if you have not already.
Have you tried more than one USB port on the computer (not a hub if you use one)?  You can also try it with all other USB devices disconnected, except for standard keyboard and mouse (if normally used).
If those things do not help, what version of Windows do you use?

  • IPod Shuffle 4th gen cannot play music and no lights but shows up in PC

I've been using the iPod Shuffle 4th gen for almost 3 months since I bought it at September 2010. Since yesterday, my iPod hasn't been playing musics or showing up any lights, same thing when plugged to computer and it didn't showed up in iTunes neither. Today, finally the light lit up when I plugged it into my computer and showed up in iTunes too. But, unfortunately, I still can't play any music. The light goes off every time I remove my iPod from the computer and it is not responsive to any clicks whatsoever. I've tried restoring the device and syncing all the songs back in, it didn't worked either.
    SOME HELP PLEASE? thanks

I am having the same problem with mine.
When connected to the PC it seems to be ok. All the light signs are working (sync, battery, etc.). I can access it by iTunes, add or delete music, etc.
But when I unplugg from the PC it will not respond to anything.
I have tried the hard reset and to restore it...no change at all.
    Anyone can help!?
