Auto-Lock time vs. Passcode time

I'm too embarassed to admit what I thought the difference was, but just in case anyone who is starting out with an iPhone is confused, here's a tip that may help.
Auto-Lock time is the time delay before the iPhone goes to sleep when not in use.
"Require Passcode" means you can wake instantly from that sleep until the Passcode kicks in, ranging from immediately, to never if you don't want to have to enter a code.
Mine is set to sleep after one minute of non-use. But you can wake it in the first 15 minutes of sleep without entering a code.
I know this seems obvious, but the terminology is not and the manual does not so much as mention setting the Passcode interval, just Auto-Lock. So hope this helps somebody sort it out and doesn't get me too thoroughly flamed (grin).

    This sorted it for me:
Backup your iPhone to iCloud (I believe backing up to iTunes will work too). Now go to "Settings --> General --> Reset --> Erase All Content and Settings" to completely restore your iPhone to factory settings. Assuming you've backed up to iCloud, you'll be asked when setting up your iPhone if you want to restore from an iCloud backup. Choose that option and once your iPhone has restored itself from your backup, this annoying problem will finally be gone! (was for me anyway).
To restore from an iTunes backup, connect your iPhone to your computer, load iTunes. Click the File menu and select Devices > Restore from Back up.

  • Exchange enforced auto lock time is 30 min at my co. but iphone limit is 15

Is there any way to extend this lockout time. It is a real drag to have to enter the password on the tiny onscreen keyboard every 15 minutes. Also it would be great if we could have the option of using the numeric dialer style pad to unlock the phone. It would be soooo much easier to unlock the phone with one hand. Please fix this Apple, it is a major drag on enterprise users.

  • Disabling Passcode Auto-Lock

I have a new iPod Touch and ever since I enabled it to get my e-mail and calendar information from Outlook it requires me to use a Passcode and to set an auto lock time. This is frustrating but especially so when I am in the car listening to music and I want to skip a song. I have to type in my passcode and before I can skip the song. This is a dangerous operation if one is driving. Is there a way to disable the auto lock or make it only apply to the e-mail app? Is Apple planning to improve this in future uprgrades to the software? If not I will not be using the Touch as my MP3 player and only as a PDA. An Mp3 player that auto locks after a few minutes is not much good.

Apple's workaround for this is to tap the Home button twice. Then you get the basic player controls even though the unit is locked.
I hate the Touch for car use. I am forced to stare at it to change anything and find it dangerous. I keep a 5G iPod video in a case for extended car use, and I can feel around the scroll wheel that way.

  • Auto lock vs Passcode Lock

What is the difference between Auto lock and Passcode Lock?

auto lock and passcode lock are two different things.
auto lock is to turn off the display)when you leave the phone unlocked and not use it( it's something like a screen saver that comes up in your computer screen after a while of inactivity, you can set the time in the auto lock section.so if you choose "never" it won't lock(turn of the display).this feature is to save battery life when the screen is turned on and your are not using it.
passcode lock is to lock your phone with a passcode(either simple or complex).to un lock your phone you have to enter your passcode(since you are using iphone 5, i am not going to talk about the finger print sensor).this is like locking your computer with a password.you can set a timing as well to ask for the passcode.
you can see just the auto lock or the passcode lock and you can use it in a combination as well.
lets say for example if you set autolock to 1 minute and passcode lock to never, and you unlock your phone and  just leave your phone on the table with the display on, the auto lock will click in and lock your phone in 1 minute.when you unlock the phone you dont have to enter the passcode since you set it to never.
but if you set the passcode to immedietly or 1 min with the same auto lock setting, you will need to enter passcode when you unlock the phone.
i hope i made it clear enough, you can just play with the settings and see for yourself.

  • 5 minute Auto-Lock not engaging on certain webpages

    Hi Apple Support Forums,
I have been testing iPads in our organisation for a few weeks now, and one of our iPad users discovered a fairly major bug in iOS 4.2
    If:
(Mobile)Safari is left open with either: adelaidenow.com.au or theaustralian.com.au (and possibly other News Corporation newspaper sites, but not news.com.au)
Auto-Lock is set to 5 minutes (as per our organisations MobileConfig passcode settings)
iPhones and iPads will not lock. The screen will not even dim, even after the auto-lock time has expended.
This was discovered when one of our users left adelaidenow.com.au running on an iPad on a table and left it to answer a phonecall. The device had not locked after their phone call.
    Procedure to reproduce:
I opened Safari on the iPad and accessed adelaidenow.com.au. I let the page load (while providing input, moving finger) and then stopped interacting with the ipad. (left idle).
I set up a stopwatch and verified that after 7 minutes it had not locked.
The device had been idle for 7 minutes without input and had not already locked.
To verify that it was not Safari (the app, not the web page) that was not preventing lock, I loaded au.yahoo.com (while providing input) and then left it idle.
After 5 minutes the screen locked. (as expected)
I then loaded www.theaustralian.com.au and left it idle.
I step a stopwatch going and after 6 minutes it had not locked.
I tested this against http://au.yahoo.com and http://abc.net.au/news and the iPad/iPhone will lock as expected.
I believe that cause for this is that newsCorp is using a custom refresh script in javascript, rather than a standard META REFRESH tag. Somehow this javascript is fooling iOS into thinking that the device is not idle.
This is a fairly major security hole, as the device is violating a locked-down MobileConfig.
Could others test this and find any other sites that prevent iOS from auto-locking?

  • Auto-lock doesn't work after updating iOS 6.

I'm using iphone 4s. After updating iOS 6, the auto-lock function doesn't work anymore. I left it for 10 minutes and when i came back, the screen was still on although the auto-lock time is 2 minutes. I tested many times, tried to reboot but it didnt help. But the screen auto-lock is still working. Does anyone have problem like me and know how to fix it ?

    Are you using Assistive Touch?

  • HT4623 iOS 6 auto-lock problem

Since I have updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 6, the auto-lock button doesnt work anymore.
In addition, after pushing the button, my iPhone starts to oscillate between the "power off" and "unlock" pages.
The same behavior happens also during the execution of different applications after a few seconds.
Under thes conditions, my iPhone is now unusable.
No clear for me how to step back to iOS 5 until this bug is fixed by Apple.

I use assitive touch as well but not because I need assistance. Some things I just find quicker to do by using it.
Since updating my iPhone 4 (not S) to iOS 6 yesterday (OTA), I'm also experiencing Auto-Lock not working 100% of the time. I've always had the auto-lock time set to it's 2 minute default and under 5.1.1, it has *always* auto-locked. Then today, I put the phone down for about 30 minutes after a brief use. I came back to the phone to find the screen still on with the battery level dropped as well cause of it. I had NO additional apps running...
I am experimenting now and it *seems* that if auto-lock is set to 1 minute, it will auto-lock correctly. It may be that the 2 minute setting is what's causing the issue. As I said, I'm still testing this, again with no additional apps running in my testing...stay tuned.

  • Always auto locks by itself

My iPad 2 always auto locks by itself even though the auto lock time is not up yet. Went to the service centre and was told that it was the software issue & the most common problem iPad faces. A restore of the iPad via iTunes will cure this issue.  I did a restore but the proble started again.....! Help.....

If it is not an Exhange account issue and you have restored to no avail, try a reset. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears - takes about 10-15 seconds. Ignore the red slider.

  • Auto-lock & AppleTV?

Can Auto-lock be automatically disabled during movie streaming to AppleTV?
Seemed to work with Acorn TV at first plays then started to required preventing auto-lock by touching the screen.
I could turn off auto-lock in Setting but an auto keep 'playing' seems a better option.
    Thanks.

    Hi OldMT,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
You would need to set your Auto-Lock on the iPad to Never if you don't want it to go to sleep when using Airplay with your Apple TV.

  • Auto-Locking

Ok, so just tonight I realized that my 1st gen iPod touch does not seem to want to go to sleep on its own. Even though I have the Auto-Lock time as 1 minute, it doesn't lock or sleep even 5 minutes of no activity. I reset and restarted my iPod but no luck. I haven't restored yet because I don't have time yet, but I will this weekend most likely and I'll give that a shot. I strongly go against restoring my iPod given if there is an option that does the job but doesn't require a restore as it takes me forever to put all my apps and settings back on even after restoring from back ups as they usually become corrupt.
So does anyone know what could be causing my iPod to not lock/sleep after my desired auto-lock time?

So yeah I marked this as answered because the problem stopped for a little bit last night and I didn't have time to see if this was temporary or not. So this after noon it happened again. So it seems like this is a random event that keeps happening to my iPod, which is a hassle because if I accidentally hit one of the buttons while its in my pocket, it could very well be draining my battery without my awareness. Also, IF the screen eventually locks, then when i hit the home button, it doesn't show the slide to unlock screen. However, when I hit the sleep/wake button, it prompts me to slide the slider.

  • HT201263 When my Ipod touch is in autolock I can only restart the device holding the sleep/wake button and home button at the same time for 10 seconds.  While in auto-lock it is using battery power and will do so until the battery is drained.  Whats wrong

    - Try a reset. Nothing is lost:
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
    - Connect the iPod to your computer and try to restore via iTunes. Try placing in Recovery mode if necessary to restore.
    - If you can't turn the iPod completely off, let the batter fully drain. After charging for at lerast anhour try again
    - If still not successful time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • How to disable the message that pops up every time i connect my iphone "photos in the camera roll of iphone cannot be imported because the device is locked with a passcode"?

Wrongly posted in iPhoto forum, should probably be posted here instead.
I want to remove the message that pops up every time i connect my IPhone that says: "Photos in the Camera Roll of "Name" cannot be imported because the device is locked with a passcode.".
This computer is not one that I want to import photos to (or sync with the iPhone), so this message is just very annoying, and it pops up all the time. I cannot find a way to disable this message. It is constantly appearing. No application is launching, I have turned off the iPhoto launch in the Image Capture app as well as in iPhoto. Thanks in advance if anyone has any information about this.

Because your computer sees your phone, as it would see any digital camera, as long as you have photos in your camera role. Since you state you don't sync with this computer & have a passcode on your phone, that's why you get that message. The only way to prevent that message is either start syncing with this computer; remove the photos from your camera roll prior to connecting; or first turn off your passcode before you connect. Either that, or you live with it.
You shouldn't be storing photos in your camera roll anyway. iPhone camera roll is not designed for photo storage. You should be regularly importing them.
