  • Master pages do no display auto page numbering

    This is strange. I set up auto page numbering on the master pages and the document pages display the page numbers correctly. But later on I thought the page numbers were too large so I went to the master pages to change the size and there's nothing. Thinking the page numbers were hidden from view or somehow were white in color (i.e, they were there but weren't being displayed) I chose Select All but still nothing.

    You're a genius. Happy Thanksgiving.

  • Start Auto-Page Numbers a Few Pages In

    Just like the title says.
    I'm writing a long paper, and in the footer I wanna put in auto-page numbers on the third page. If I select the third page and then turn the setting on, it just starts on the first page! How do I start the numbering on the third page?
    Thanks a ton!

    Put in a section break at the end of the 2nd page:
    +Menu > Insert > Section Break+
    Then go to 3rd page:
    +Inspector > Layout > Sections > Start at: 1+

  • Change Start page numbering to Auto Page numbering in the Numbering & Section Options using script

    1.  I have many documents to add into a book. After adding the documents, all file page numbers should be continued from the previous file. Now I am doing manually for all files at all time. Numbering & Section Options => Start Page Numbering at: to Automatic Page Numbering.
    2. And also I need to add the Chapter number with the page number (Ex: 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 … , 2/2, 2/3, 2/4 …., 3/2, 3/3, 3/4 ….). Here also I am doing manually like.  Numbering & Section Options => Page Numbering => Section Prefix: 1 and Include Prefix When Numbering Pages. (The page number should start from 2).
    Note: In Every chapter opening there will be a file name called S… (Ex: Ch 1: S3391.indd, Ch 2: S3392.indd, Ch 3: S3393.indd). So after every S(S3391, S3392 …) file the next file page number should starts from 1/2, 1/3. 2/2, 2/2 ….
    Ex:
    Chapter 1          Pages
    S3391.indd
    32457.indd       1/2  … 1/5
    32617.indd       1/6 ….. 1/9
    32217.indd       1/10 … 1/13
    Chapter 2
    S3392.indd
    42457.indd       2/2  … 2/3
    52617.indd       2/4 ….. 2/9
    33217.indd       2/10 … 2/13
    Could anyone give me an idea or script, please? At least for First one, could anyone suggest me ASAP.
    P.S: I have some more questions regarding this, I will post that after some time...
    Thanks in Advance,
    Thiru

    var openedDocs = app.documents;
    var chapterPrefix = prompt ("Enter the chapter prefix", "1/", "Prefix");
    for (var doc=0; doc<openedDocs.length; doc++){

        openedDocs[doc].sections[0].sectionPrefix = chapterPrefix;
        openedDocs[doc].sections[0].includeSectionPrefix = true;
    alert("Done");
    Chapter 1, contains 10 files (Each file 6 pages)… (1/1, 1/2, … 1/60) – prefix 1
    Open all 10 files of one chapter and run it....
    and then for another 10 files....

  • Background image obscures the auto page numbering

    I have an 80 page book that I want to have automatic page numbering. All pages have a background image that bleeds off the page. The background image changes on every page.
    The document is currently set up with individual image boxes on each page rather than on the master page. The problem i have is with the image obscuring the page numbering on each page. Trying to correct this I went back into the master pages to lay down a master image box bleeding off the page and the automatic page numbering on the layer above it. Testing this on a test document everything works fine. But as soon as i attempt to go into a regular page and change that master image the numbers disappear.
    What is the proper way to change an image from the applied master page so that it doesn't obscure the page numbers?

    Great suggestion for using layers, I'm accustomed to using them all the time in Illustrator and forgot about that option in this case. It worked perfectly to place the page numbers on the master page on a second layer positioned on top and applying master page to all document pages. It brought the numbers up to the top level.
    Thanks so much for the solution.

  • Auto page numbering trouble...

    HI,
    I get the same numbers on two different spreads in my document. I´ve tried putting new numbers on the master pages, but the same thing happens on the very same spreads.
    Please help...

    Do you have more than one section?

  • Bizarre bug - Letter "A" superimposed over auto page numbers, but only in one font

    I originally saw this on a document upgraded from Pages '09, but I can reproduce it in new documents as well. When using the font Adobe Caslon Pro, Pages superimposes a capital letter "A" over the automatic page number insert.
    Typing other numbers is fine, it's only Pages's automatic page number feature.
    It happens regardless of style: bold, italic, underline, etc.
    It happens on all pages, not just the first one.
    As far as I can tell, it only happens with Adobe Caslon Pro. I haven't tested every last font I have, but every other one I've tried has not had this issue.
    Any ideas on how to proceed? How to check to see if it's a Pages problem or a problem with the font? I really like this font for the document I'm using and am not keen on changing it, or making the page number a different font from the rest of the document. I've attached an image so you can see the bug in action.

    You haven't said, but we presume this is happening in Pages 5 in Mavericks?
    Yes, sorry! Pages 5.1, Mac OS X 10.9.1.
    Have you tested it in Pages '09 in Mavericks?
    Something's wrong with my copy of Pages '09, it can't seem to open any documents (just says "The document _____ could not be opened" every time.). That's why I'm moving over to the new version.
    Is your Adobe Caslon Pro an otf font?
    It is, yes.
    Is this happening with all variants of Adobe Caslon Pro or only one style?
    Every variant.

  • How do I customize auto page numbers?

    My professor requires that we number our pages like this: "Last name #"
    But I can't figure out how to customize it to include my last name.

    In the Header field or another repeating object or field, type "LastName ", then choose Insert > Page Number.

  • Cross-reference auto-page numers?

    Can anyone tell me why i cannot get cross-references to work with  automatic page numbering?  Is there some fundamental error i am  making?  I have the master files setup with auto-page numbering based on  'current page.'  All of my pages are numbered sequentially as 1, 2, 3,  etc. and setup with a unique paragraph style.  however, when i try to  reference a page number in the document, none of the pages show up under  the paragraph style in the cross-reference menu.  I have even tried to  use ctrl+shft+click on the desired reference page to bring the page number frame  from the master file onto that specific page, but the text still does  not show up in the cross-references menu.  I feel as though i must be  making some sort of mistake because it seems this could be one of the  more obvious/widespread uses for the cross-reference feature.  Any help  would be great.  Perhaps there is simply another way to do  this?  Thanks!

    Peter,
    I understand that this is probably a more specific use of the feature, no doubt.  It is ultimately unrealistic to expect a program to work exactly as each individual user's project approach dictates.  I dont take the comment as a slam, dont fret.
    My confusion and concern ultimately stems from the fact that, on the surface (granted, I am definitely not a programmer ), it seems like the ability to directly reference the page number would be, almost inherently, already built-in in the sense that the page number is recognized as a product of content placement.  In other words, if the cross-reference knows that changes to the document composition have caused my referenced content to move from auto-numbered page 36 to auto-numbered page 37, yet the reference cannot exist to simply the page number itself.  It has to exist via the content on taht page.  Hopefully I have provided and explanation which makes sense!
    In all honesty, the ability to reference only content and not also page number is only goingot set me back about half.  For my sake, I have a 300 page document which includes hundreds of figures/illustrations, all of which correspond to text explanations in a different part of the document.  Over time, it is anticipated that standards and graphics will be added/subtracted/changed, and therefore, so will the section numbering, page numbering, figure numbering, and the corresponding pages on which all of these pieces of info will occur.  We would like to correspond figures and sections to one number; in this case, the page.  Because each figure/illustration will have it's own page, it is desired to make the figure number and page number match to achieve an easier means of navigating the book.  Basically, I want the text section, which will be read first, to reference figure numbers and/or page numbers (at this point, i have the option of choosing one or the other), but both of these numbers are going to dynamically update.
    So, if that made any sense at all (ha), is there a way to use the cross references to point at a number that is set to automatically/dynamically change?  If there is not, then perhaps I will simply have to create static figure numbers for the referenced content and then just let the page numbers change over time.  If you have any other suggestions, I am definitely open to exploring them!
    Thanks for the continued help!

    Hi, Garrett:
    If I understand your description correctly, it seems that you're asking for an unusual numbering/navigation approach. Is there an example that you've seen that works this way, and that you want to emulate? Is this a publishing style/convention in the particular industry?
    Am I correct in imagining that in a document that contains three figures on discontiguous pages, they might be numbered something like this:
    Page #
    Figure #
    1
    1
    15
    15
    250
    250
    This would result in no figures 2, 3...14...249. Would your document have references to figure 15 on page 15? Would you want your list of figures (LOF) to resemble:
    Figure  number and title                                                     Page
       1.  Example of the widget in question .............................    1
    15.  Example of another widget .........................................  15
    (sorry about the messy table layout - the HTML is tricky)
    Would your audience be concerned that the figure numbers are not consecutive across a multi-chapter book, or consecutive within a chapter, and restart in each chapter? That is, would a reader think that some figures are missing?
    Is there a specific objection to figure 11 on page 26 becoming figure 11 on page 28, if text content were inserted, or becoming figure 16 on page 29 if figures were inserted? When numbered-list paragraph styles and cross-reference formats are set up properly, cross-references to these figures would update to indicate both the correct number and correct page.
    Have I misunderstood something?
    [EDIT]
    I forgot to ask if your document will be using cross-references interactively in a PDF or other multimedia format. If so, can you give more detail on your expectations?
    Have you looked into InDesign hyperlinks? They can refer to a page number - either "sticking" to the designated page no matter if its page number changes because of reflow or being moved, or "sticking" to whatever happens to become the "n-th" page if the original page is relocated. Search Help for Create a hyperlink to a page.

  • Page Numbers Not Appearing in Data Merge Document?

    Hello, hopefully someone can help. I am pretty new to InDesign but learning a lot.  I am creating a member directory of about 200 pages (about 2800 records merged from .csv to InDesign 6). Everything is working fine with the merge, except generating the page numbers.  I tried adding page number at the bottom of the page to the master BEFORE merging. But if I do that, it greys out the "multiple records per page" option when trying to perform the Data Merge (using "Create merged Document").  So, I tried adding the page number to the A-master AFTER creating the merged document, but the page number is not appearing on any of the pages.  There must be a way to do this, can anyone help?
    (FYI - to generate the auto page numbers, I am going to the Type-Insert Special Character-Markers-Current Page Number, and placing that within a text field at the bottom of the page.  Thanks in advance. )

    Here is a screen shot.  I have placed it on the A-Master.  See Screenshot#1.  Screenshot #2 shows Page 70 with no page number (and no other pages have page numbers that I can see.  Thanks for your advice on fixing....
    Sorry, here is screenshot #2, (with personal details redacted but the records are there behind the grey boxes):

  • Page numbers not working in pages

    Help!
    I'm working on a document that will be 100+ pages, printing it double sided to be bound together. I would like to have the pages numbers listed in the footer on the outside of the page as well as some text in the center of the footer. Working with Pages '09 version 4.1.
    I have "facing pages" selected. "Left and Right pages different" selected. "Use previous headers and footers" selected. I selected "Insert Auto page numbers" and told it to put them on the outside.
    The problem - only some pages have the numbers on the outside like I selected. Pages 1-12 have the page numbers are all left justified. Pages 13-16 are correct. Pages 17-23 have the page numbers are all left justified. So on and so forth. There is no rhyme or reason why some of these are different. I do have different sections in the document - but sometimes it's in the middle of the section that it decides to change the formatting on me.
    On top of that, I added the text I wanted in the center. On some pages it's there, others it isn't. And again, no rhyme or reason as to why. Sometimes, the page numbers ARE in the correct place, but the text IS NOT there. Sometimes the page numbers ARE NOT in the correct place, and the text IS there. Leaving me with very few pages that are 100% correct.
    The only thing I have going for me at the moment is that every page has a page number on it! I suppose that's something. And I believe I know how to go in and change the footers individually. But, like I said, this will be 100+ pages, I'd really like to just do it once, not individually for each page.
    Help please! Thanks!

    Hello black94,
    Ok I can load the WinForm project and know part of your game, although I'm not so sure how to play the game. I cannot understand your language.
    When I checked the WPF project it seems you build the UI with WPF and only write events here, I haven't find binding related xaml code. Anyway, can you quote the problem or code about how you insert the white cell in WPF?
    For the printPreviewDialog, I see you already asked about this question before:
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/ee97efd9-9245-4972-8576-a5230fb520e7/printpreviewdialog-in-wpf?forum=wpf
    So the following place is where the error raised?
    PrintDocument printdocument = new PrintDocument();
    System.Windows.Controls.PrintDialog printDialog = new System.Windows.Controls.PrintDialog();
    System.Windows.Forms.PrintPreviewDialog printPreviewDialog1 = new System.Windows.Forms.PrintPreviewDialog();
    //this.printPreviewDialog1.Document = this.printDocument1;

  • How do I add page numbers to my document without the page numbers automatically changing. I do not want the page numbers the software automatically places into my document.

    How do I add page numbers to my document without the page numbers automatically changing? The title page is blank, I can type in 1 on the 1st typed page, but the #1 automatically goes into the next page and will not change.

    Click at bottom of the first page:
    Menu > Insert > Section break
    Click somewhere in the 2nd page (not the header/footer)
    Inspector > Layout > Section > Page Numbers > Start at 1 > Configuration > uncheck use previous headers and footers
    Click into the header or footer of the second page:
    Menu > Insert > Auto Page Numbers…
    If there is anything in the header or footer on the first page that you don't want just select it and delete it.
    If you really wanted to manual place page numbers on each page you will have to use a section break between each and every page. I can't imagine that would be useful.

  • Page numbers from placed indd file not printing

    I've created a saddle-stitch booklet 1up in InDesign CS4. I've got auto page numbers on the master page, but when I place it in another InDesign document 2up for proofing, the page numbers are visible, but don't output either to an exported PDF or a PostScript file printed to be Distilled. Please advise.

    It's a bug. Anything on the master page of a placed INDD file just
    disappears...not good.

  • Using iWork 09 Pages I need the first six pages of a document to not be counted as page numbers. I need the seventh page to be numbered as page one. I already know to have a section break between pages 6 and 7 and to use inspector "start at." Not working

    In the book I'm formatting, the first page is the title page, the second page is the copyright page, the third through fifth pages are the table of contents, the sixth page is blank, then the text (which I want to number as page one) is the introduction. I have section breaks between the title page, the copyright page, the table of contents, and the introduction. Using the Inspector, Layout, Section, and selecting "Start at" 7 doesn't do anything!

    Is is a bit tricky, but it works. On your 6th page (the blank one) go to Insert > Section Break. This will give you a 7th page. Then go to Inspector (blue circle with a white letter i in it) and go to Layout Inspector (2nd tab). Once in thee, go to Section. Check "Start at" and enter the number 1. Then ensure all other toons I there are unchecked.
    Then go to Insert, and select Auto Page Numbers. You will find that your 7th page is numbered 1 as you want, but the first six pages will be numbered 1 to 6, which you don't want. But you can then delete the page numbering in that 1st section, leaving your 2nd section, beginning at page 7, numbered as page 1. You'll need to play around a bit as I did, and I would suggest using a test document to play with so you can undo any unwanted actions etc, but with tweaking around, it's doable. This took me ages to sort, so if it works for you, please give me the points :-)

  • Please help with page numbering!

    Right, so I'm writing my thesis and need to insert different types of page numbering (note: I'm using Pages '09 4.3)
    I've split the document up by inserting sections:
    Section 1: Glossary of Abbreviations, List of Figures. These must be numbered, but on a Roman numeral system. This section begins on page 4, but page 4 should actually read page 'i', page 5 'ii', page 6 'iii', and so on.
    Section 2: Main body of text. This must also be numbered, but using Arabic numbers. This section begins on Page 8, but I want page 8 to read page '1', if you see what I mean.
    My problem: while I've succeeded in inserting  Arabic numbering at Section 2, I cannot do the same for Section 1. Each time I try to insert the Roman numerals using 'Insert > Auto Page Numbers...' it just numbers the WHOLE document that way! I can't manually type in the numeral at the footer of each page either, because when you change one footer it changes all the footers within a section!
    I've gone on every forum, tried everything I've read, but it STILL WON'T cooperate. This should be the easiest thing in the world but I can't seem to do it! I'm going insane. I beg you, if I can't solve this soon I'll overheat and throw this stupid computer out of the window. Please, PLEASE help!

    I tidied all that up and added it to the iWorkTipsnTricks forum.
