Auto recovered files

I have been working on a document within Microsoft word when it shut down unexpectedly. Foolishly I closed down the auto recovered file without saving my changes. The file in question isn't within my trash folder is there anyway of recovering the 'auto recovered' file.
I realise this is an absolute school boy error but any help would be hugely appreciated
Thanks Gaz

If it was a new file and you never save it then it's gone. Sorry. Even with autosave feature on you should be in the habit of periodically manually saving documents as you work.

  • Plugin or action to Autosave or Auto-Recover files??

I know Adobe hasn't seen fit to include an autosave function in any version of Photoshop. I consider that the height of arrogance and stupidity. Some will argue the time it takes to auto-save files doesn't justify it's inclusion. The time and effort in creating the work is equal justification for such a feature. Why should I have to remember to save every 10 minutes or so when I have no idea when the silly program will suddenly crash on me for no good or explained reason? Why should I be put through that kind of stress that will affect my creative workflow?
As an alternative it would be helpful to find some third party software, plugin that would do the same thing. It would be good if it could be set to a timed response. An action might do it but it still require manual activation. Perhaps someone knows of a script that could be written? Any ideas or suggestions other than "tough it out" and "you can't do that, too bad" would be appreciated.

    Control-S is not a plug-in and not a script.
Of course it is not. I was taking a bit of a license there. However, it is the answer to the problem, is it not? It's simple, fast, and you know that you will have an interruption, when you invoke it, so you can pause, and not get caught in the middle of an intricate Selection, or some other operation, where you might, in fact, loose all of the work/time that you have invested.
That is why Adobe has chosen (for all these years) to not implement an AutoSave.
As the program can never be sure when you are done working on something, or are just relaxing your hold on your stylus, it would never know when it was "safe" to AutoSave. Some of my Selections take hours to create. I'd hate to loose them, because I was not done yet, and the AutoSave kicked in during that Selection, only saving part of it.
For tiny, simple images, it'd not likely be a problem. Some would likely benefit. I'd have it disabled most of the time.
As I pointed out, there are major differences to what is being AutoSaved, between Premiere and Photoshop. Still, many editors turn AutoSave off, because the every 5 minute (default time) pause disrupts their workflow. Even on my very fast, robust workstation, a Save can take 30 sec. on some of the images.
No, the manual use of Ctrl-s is the answer. Every NLE users learns this, even with AutoSave. Well-timed Save_As operations can be a blessing too. Nearly every PS user knows about Crtl-s and most incorporate it into their workflow.
Sorry the the humor did not work. I will do better in the future.

  • Recover an unsaved auto recovered file

I was using word 365 (university) when my macbook pro shut down due to lack of battery. I recovered all the files just fine when logging back in by telling it to open all the iwndows that had previously been opened.
However, I continued to work on my file without saving it (it's now an autorecovery doc). When the same happened again a few days later and I asked it to open up all open windows, it didn't come back up.
Using Disk Drill, I found a file that seems to contain some of the info I had but I have to pay to get it to recover it and can't tell if the whole file is there (seems it may just be that first bit, the first autorecovery).
I basically want to know if there would be a copy of my whole file anywhere on the system because, if so, I can take it into a computer shop and get them to get it for me. Unless there's a fairly simple way I could do it myself (have already looked under the /var/private section and it's not there - disk drill seemed to pick up a lot of docs that weren't there actually, some from a very long time ago).
Thank for any help/suggestions (I know it was stupid not to save it).

  • CS6 Beta ended by crash - How/Where to keep my Auto-Saved Recovered file ?

    Hello,
I was working on Photoshop CS6 beta on Lion OSX since one month with no problem.
Yesterday seemed to be the last day of use (1st june annonced however) and Photoshop CS6 Beta shutted down since I was working on it.
On the re-opening it asks for a licence key so I try to buy one month rental on the e-shop but the 3 bank cards tested failed. So I gave a call to the commercial service and they told me that they do not take in charge rental but only full licence and that I can download the trial for one more month if I want to.
So, I will replace the beta by the trial.
    But :
    - How can I keep my Auto-saved Recovered file I was working on when crashing (pretty important work)
    - Where the recovered file is saved on the hard-drive ? And, can I make it works whith CS6 non-beta ?
A lot of thanks in advance for your help.
    Kind Regards

As I understand it - having not (fortunatley) had the opportunity to test this - if PS crashes and you have auto-save switched on, you need to re-launch PS and it will automatically open with the recovered file(s) in the state they were at when auto-save last saved them. Auto-save stores files temporarily in a special folder that's located at the same file path as your scratch disk location. (My scratch disk is at root level on a seperate drive, so it's easy to see the auto-save folder if I look there, but if you can locate your scratch disk, you should see the auto-save folder also.)
Of course, the fact that you can no longer open PS is going to present a problem here. I'm not sure if you could re-access the file via the trial version once that was installed and pointing to the same scratch disk area.
I might have got this wrong, but I think it's correct... Feel free to disprove my post!

  • Irritating: Recovered Files Folder in Trash after every boot

I have a clean installation of Snow Leopard on my 2009 iMac. The computer came with Leopard. But I gave uncle Steve $30 and got the Snow Leopard disc.
I did a clean installation; did not use any time machine recovery or reuse any old data. Just CLEAN.
Now, after each shut down and restart cycle, the Trash can has crumbled paper. This really bothers me. I thought Macs suppose to work correctly. I did not delete anything and nothing should be in that Trash. If OS deletes something, it should take care of it behind the curtain. I don't want to see trash in the Trash can.
So I opened the Trash and see what's inside it. Every time, it is a folder called Recovered Files, and it has 0 bytes in it.
I have no other software installed on the computer. All latest updates applied as of Mar 27.
    Any ideas?

Exact same problem here as Alex and Bishboria.
I'm always cleaning my Trash, whatever I reboot, shutdown or wake-up the computer from sleep mode, the previously empty trash get an empty "Recovered Files" folder...
This happens since Snow Leopard upgrade. Subsequent versions of Snow 10.6.x didn't correct this behavior.
Same wish than Alex: if the system is performing some auto-cleaning at each restart cycle, fine, I'm glad that the system takes care of itself and of my computer. But don't show me this empty folder... Let me handle MY trash! So that I know when I forget to empty it.
It should goes to another post, but this "bug" belongs to the (long?) list of Snow's glitches: longer time to boot, slugishness response from internal harddrive. Should I go back to Leopard which was so responsive? The brand new full-64bits-Kernel isn't it supposed to be faster, stronger, more efficient than the 32bits one?!

  • Recovering files from your ipod

My computer got reconfigured, so is there a way ro recover files from your ipod to your computer? I have a windows XP not a mac,if that makes a difference.

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    iRepo Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • PS CS6 Auto Recover???

Was asked to troubleshoot a Win 7 PS13 (CS6) crash today - first time to my knowledge PS has ever crashed! On restart, no Auto Recover option. All work lost. Did some checking.
    Found two folders:
    1. On the boot disk, found Users\xxxx...\....\AutoRecover
    2. On the exclusive scratch disk - set on G: - found the folder G:\PSAutoRecover (as well as the PS temp file in the root of G:).
Both the AutoRecover folders were empty.
Set auto save time to 5 minutes... Rebooted. Restarted PS and created a new file - test01.psd. Saved it. Did some work, didn't save... kept checking... (played games for 15 mins). Checked. Both AutoRecover files remained empty.
Crashed the system (forced shutdown). Auto recover option and the test file was not showing up in the recent files list... opened the original test01.psd. No work subsequent to the original save showed up. Nor any recovery option. Did some more work on the file... just checked... both the AutoRecover folders are still empty.
    (Just closed PS and saw that the PS temp file deleted itself. Both the AutoRecovery folders remain - empty.}
    So, my questions are:
    1. Is there a 'Permissions' attribute i need to set? Or...
    2. Is the AutoRecover messed up? Or...
    3. Is the installation messed up and should i advise a reinstallation?
    TIA....

Take a closer look at his system info, Curt.  It IS pointed at the startup volume.
TorQue[MoD], I compared your system info with my own, as I have a Windows 7 x64 system that does not have the problem (and in fact auto-save recovery saved my bacon a few times when I had 3D rendering crashes recently).
First and foremost, why are you running 13.0 when 13.0.1 has long since been released?

  • Why doesn't PS have auto-recover?

This is probably the one thing about PS that bugs the crap out of me. If Photoshop crashes while you are working something, it is lost forever. I was working on a digital painting a couple of days ago, and I went to save it, and PS crashed.
Every other program (Word, Powerpoint, Excel etc.) has an auto-save/auto-recover feature. Why doesn't PS have one? It seems silly for it not to.

This has been discussed in several other threads, so do a search. As far as I'm concerned any such request doesn't make sense given how PS currently works and how the file format is structured. There's simply no realistic and safe way to save potentially large files in a few (micro-)seconds before a crash nor would that work as an auto-backup. Too many external factors and constant disk activity would have other negative side-effects... If you get my meaning: It's one thing to save a few kilobytes from a Word document in a few blips, but a totally different one shuffling around gigabytes.

  • PS CS6 Auto Recover??? Posted earlier but seems to have vanished

Hi... posted this earlier but the problem/question seems to have vanished... so, reposting.
    (Just closed PS and saw that the PS temp file deleted itself. Both the AutoRecovery folders remain - empty.}
    So, my questions are:
    1. Is there a 'Permissions' attribute i need to set? Or...
    2. Is the AutoRecover messed up? Or...
    3. Is the installation messed up and should i advise a reinstallation?
    TIA....

    Neil...
Think you can somehow help... Have done the following, again today:
    1. Uninstalled the entire CS Suite. This includes registry and folders
    2. Ran the Adobe CS6 Cleanup tool - twice. Once for the entire suite and a second time for PS
    3. Ran a registry clean up program
    4. Did a Disk defragment - not really important, but still
    5. Rebooted between various stages...
    6. Reinstalled CS6 Master Collection minus some programs which are not needed such as Flash, AI 32 bit, etc. But installed both versions of PS
    7. Validated using PS
    8. Started - separately - both versions of PS. Set scratch to E drive (primary partition - 100GB) and Autorecover to 5 mins
    9. Ran both versions of PS and opened and modified a file
In each case, the 'PSAutoRecover' folder was created on the scratch drive - E:\ alongwith the PS temp file. But the 'PSAutoRecover' folder never got populated.
Must be something unique to this system but can't figure out what. It can't be a permissions issue because both the scratch file and the autorecover folder are being created.
BTW... all Adobe entries in the config.sys startup are disabled - except for the Adobe CS6 Service Manager. But can't be those either as they are all related to updates, Acrobat, etc.
Yet, putting the primary scratch on C;\ solves the problem. However, as both Curt and you have tested, that should not be an issue...
(Have not been able to check on any other system as this is the only one that has CS6.)
    System specs: Intel i5 processor, 12gb RAM, 64bit Win 7, P-55 USB3 Motherboard
Grateful for any suggestions / ideas...
    Cheers...

  • CS6 opens with Auto Recovery files every launch.

I know where the recovery files are.  Finding and deleting them isn't the issue.
My understanding of Auto Recover is that when a working file is saved and closed, the corresponding Auto Recover psb should be trashed automatically.
Every evening I save and close all my work, quit Photoshop and shut down the Mac.  Every morning when I start Photoshop, at least one Auto Recovery file opens.  It's the last file(s) I was working on the previous evening.
I've toggled Auto Recover on/off, trashed the folder and had CS6 recreate it.  Nothing works.  Every morning, I am presented with a psb of the previous evening's work.
My scratch disk is a dedicated 100gb SSD.  I have triple verified that CS6 is not writing recovery files to a different location.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Rob

Is there any problem at/after quitting Photoshop?
    Boilerplate-text:
Are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by pressing command-alt-shift/ctrl-alt-shift while starting Photoshop until the appropriate dialog appears after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, cleaning caches, font validation, etc.)

  • Recovered files folder crashing iphoto

I was trying to import photos from my computer and my computer didn't have enough room to import them. The program froze and I quit the program. Every time I start up iPhoto, it immediately tries to load the "recovered files" album, which loads nothing, and the application doesn't respond so I have to quit it.

Have you cleared up space on your hard drive so you have some working room?  It's strongly recommended one maintain a minimum of 10-15 GB of free space for optimal system and application  performance.
    Try the following:
1 - open the iPhoto Library package with the Finder by Control (right) - clicking on it and selecting "Show Package Contents" from the contextual menu.
2 - open the Auto Import folder and if there are any files in ti move them to the Desktop. DO NOT make any other changes to the library.
3 - launch iPhoto and see if there's any improvement.
If there were no files in the Auto Import folder close the package and do the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
    2 - run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

  • Auto recover tweak

currently auto recover data is saved to the location of the disk swap-
would it be possible to offer the choice of another location to protect against swap disk failure (which would take down ps6 and the recovery data?

Thanks Rick, I did check the folder in which the original .cp
file is saved (I assume that is what you meant by project folder,
please correct me if this is wrong) - however I didn't see any TMP
    files.
Are these files usually hidden? I will have another look when
in the office tomorrow. I am disappointed that there is no auto
save function in Captivate (wish form here I come) and am annoyed
at myself that I have become so accustomed to this in other
programs that it didn't occur to me to hit CTRL+S every few
    minutes.
Anyway, if it is gone, its gone. I'm sure the revised content
    will be even better :)
    Cheers,
    Matt.

  • How do i Secure & recover file from shared folder

    Hi All,
I have Windows server 2008 R2 environment and one shared folder created on this with restricted permission by file sharing & security, now 1. I want to add one more restriction that owner of the folder should not able to delete that file? If this is
    not available with Microsoft then
    2. How do i recover file which deleted from MAP drive...
Please help me to resolve this issue...
    Kalpesh Chauhan

As to your first problem, I am not so familiar. But, as to the second problem, I think I can help.
In fact, I have ever also accidentally deleted my hard drive files. In order to re-access them, I have also posted my question in forums, just like you. Fortunately, after browsing many related answers and threads, I just know that a third
party data recovery program can be a good chance to go on.
So, I follow some instructions in these forums and select three drive recovery freeware to go on, including Recuva, iCare Data Recovery Free and TestDisk and so on.
Finally, I have restored all my needed data back successfully with these freeware.
So, I hope it will also help you out.
PS: Never forget to back up everything important on different hard drives or places in case of any similar data recovery problems in the future.

  • Is there any way to recover files on a corrupted drive if I can book to Lion Recovery Assistant?

Is there anyway to recover files from a corrupted drive if I can boot to the on-disk Lion Recovery Assistant?  Unfortunately Apple replaced my screen in December and wiped my hard drive.  I restored my files from Time Machine but have not done a backup since December because Time Machine sees the computer as new.  I started trying to find a way to reconnect to the existing backup with hopes of not having to do a full back up all over again.  There are a number of files that I need from the last 2 months.
My mid-2009 17" MacBook Pro froze last night and I had to press the power button to turn it off.  When the computer restarted, it boot into Lion Recovery Assistant.  Disk Utility reported errors like "invalid b-tree node size" and "invalid record count".
    - I restarted and ran fsck overnight.  This morning I looked at the computer and it said that the drive could not be repaired.
    - Genius Bar did a quick scan and said I needed a new hard drive.
    - I called Apple Care and they had me start in Lion Recovery Assistant and run Disk Utility.  Disk Utility again reported that the drive cannot be repaired.
    - I tried using target disk mode and connected the MacBook to my iMac.  The iMac can see the drive in Disk Utility but cannot mount it.
    - I tried DiskWarrior from the iMac and it cannot rebuild the drive.  It does not even attempt.
    - I tried the demo of Data Rescue and it could not read the drive (using target disk mode).
I realized that if I can boot the computer to the Lion Recovery Assistant then the drive is still functional (corrupted but still functional). Disk Utility shows the custom name I assigned to the partition (I changed it from Macintosh HD).
    Any suggestions?

I was finally able to recover my data using DiskWarrior!
After taking my laptop to a data recovery company and quoted $449 to recover my data, I decided to try one more time.  The technician did a free diagnosis and said the drive was still functional. I explained everything that I tried.  He said that they normally use Data Rescue and recommended that I wait a few minutes after starting the application before attempting to scan.
Using another computer, I installed Lion to a 16GB flash drive and installed DiskWarrior, Data Rescue, and Remo Recover.  Remo Recover ran the day before for more than 24 hours and although it "saw" the data, the it only presented a fraction of the data I needed. I booted my laptop from the flash drive and first tried Data Rescue Demo.  It estimated 3500 hours to scan a 500GB drive. That worked out to be about 145 days.  I cancelled and tried DiskWarrior hoping that since I had purchased it, I would get some value.  This time DiskWarror did the scan and in less than 90 minutes it found pretty much everything!  It seems that it does not run properly with highly corrupted drives using target disk mode.  At the end of the scan, it mounted my internal drive so that I could preview the rebuilt directories and copy what I needed to an external drive!

  • What is happening when recovered files show up in my trash everyday.  These files are recovered from my Iweb.

What is heppening when folder entitled "Recovered Files" show up in my trash daily for the last 3 days?
They are apparently recovered art thumbnails from my I web.

Annoying, but nothing to worry about.
Sometimes the OS just tries to rescue files you've trashed.
It will happen almost every time if they were built-in templates (but the Application will replace them anyway)
    Just empty the trash.
