Auto Right-Size Columns in Finder!

So if I had a nickel for all the times I have to grab the stupid little double pipe (||) at the bottom of every single column veiw just to see the full file names, or double clicking it, or command clicking it, or right clicking and choosing RightSize options...  I'd be a billionaire!
For crying out loud, PLEASE add an AUTO RIGHT-SIZE COLUMNS VIEW OPTION so I can just always see the entire filename, always, all the time, forever, always.  Puhleeeeze.
Thanks,
J

Yes, a year later with upgrade to Lion and many updates.  Still no option. The selection is possible, it's just not "sticky."  Seems a super easy fix.

  • Can I Auto-Size Columns On Finder?

I like to use "Finder" in the Columns style (3rd Button on top), however every time I launch finder it seems that I have to resize the columns in order to read it completly.  Is there a way to set it up so that it auto-sizes completly on it's own?

    There's another hidden trick.
First the basics: If you double click the cursor on the line that separates two columns, it will resize the column to the left to fit its content.
But if you hold down the Option key and then double-click any such line, it will resize all open columns to fit their respective contents.
It still isn't true auto-resizing, but this does makes my life a lot easier! ;-)

  • Auto re-size column widths?

    Hi-
is there a way to have the finder window columns always open up to a width that allows the longest file name to display in full? I'm tired of re-sizing my column widths every time I switch folders (which I do a lot) so I can read my file names.
    thanks,
    l

I have the opposite annoyance: I want my columns to all be the smallest possible width. However, Column view always opens at a default width (which makes neither of us happy, as it is neither wide enough to display all names, nor is it at the smallest size). One thing you can do is hold the option key when you get to a column that has a long name and double click the little lines at the bottom of the column divider. All open columns will then expand to the width necessary to display the longest names. However, subsequent columns revert to the default width--thus if you go back up to the root level and select a new folder, that column is still "fat" as is the second column, but the next column will be default again. If you hold the option key and drag the column width || handle, all columns expand (or contract) and it seems this width remains even when you go back up and down the tree. Of course, once you close the window you are back to square one.... I know of no way to set a default width that you prefer.

  • Rightsize All Columns in Finder?

I discovered the "Right Size" column option by control-clicking the bottom of the spacer bar between columns on Finder. It expands each column to the width of the longest file name. But I seem to have to Right Size columns each time I open them. I can't find a Finder Preference to Right Size all columns all the time, or even selectively. Am I missing something?

  • Cannot auto size columns in iTunes 10.4.  Columns are all mixed up with headings I have never seen. Cannot change by right clicking on columns.

Cannot auto size columns in iTunes 10.4.  Columns are all mixed up with headings I have never seen. Cannot change by right clicking on columns. Cannot order albums alphabetically by double clicking on heading.

Very many thanks to you, Putaro!  Your answer provided the solution. It was a buggy plug-in that turned out to be the culprit.
You're off the hook, Apple, and my apologies for stating that you let a dog run loose. You skated by this time, Apple. But I'm watching you.
But again, Putaro's reference to the plugins I had installed over the years turned out to illuminate the problem. I have several plugins in my iTunes plugins folder, pretty much all designed to add more visualizer functionality. I removed all of them, and ALL of the problems I noted in my post went away, with full iTunes functionality restored.
I began adding the plugins back to hopefully single out the culprit. Among the ones I had been using included fielder, G-Force, Timestrech, volcanokit, QuartzComposer, and Jax. I hadn't used any of them in a while - probably at least a verison or more back in iTunes updates, but iTunes continued to work with all of them installed. Currently, only QuartzComposer continues to work in iTunes 10.4. The rest no longer even show up as visualizer opitons, with one exception. Jax does show up, but does not work. AND THE PRESENCE OF JAX IS WHAT KILLED MY ITUNES.
I looked into it and went back to the developer, and it appears that they discontinued developing Jax some time ago - evidently, it was buggy and crash prone. I remember after buying it, having problems with it - having never worked to its touted potential, but I didn't pursue it, and never uninstalled it. Leaving it in there caused all iTunes functionality to cease with the iTunes 10.4 update.
If you've got Jax installed, consider removing it before updating to iTunes 10.4.
My iTunes is now working right as rain, thanks again to Putaro!

  • Finder question: "right size this column"

Finder question: how do I get the "right size this column" feature to work automatically each time I open Finder or move between columns?  The column widths reset each time I close/open Finder or move between columns.

    Finder columns:
Option dragging the resize widget || will resize all columns, wide or narrow, all the same and seems to stick.
    Otherwise:
Double clicking on the resize widget || will expand that column to show all.
Option double click on the resize widget || will temporarily resize all columns to the largest width needed..
The last option may help but it isn't permanent.

  • Finder show items in columns an item arrangement selected: Right size this column doesn't works

like the title says, under these condition (note that an item arrangement must be selected) the “right sized” to the maximum width, necessary to display the longest item in the column, doesn't works even with a double click or choosing "Right size this column" option (in both cases the column is set to the default size).
    Anyone else experience this issue?

You understand me well, sorry I'm not native English.
Have you selected an item arrangement? if I select "None" it works for me too, the issue is when I select an item arrangement (arrange by Kind for example).
    My setting:
Finder > View > Show View Options:
    - Always open in column views: SELECTED
    - Browse in column view: SELECTED
    - Arrange By: Kind
    - Sort By: Name
    - Text size: 12
    - the "three show" SELECTED
Under the above conditions I've the issue, the column isn't resized.

  • "Auto Size Column" feature dissappeared after installing iTunes 7.4.1.2

I recently downloaded and installed iTunes 7.4.1.2, and the problem that I have now is when I'm playing/using my iPod while viewing it through iTunes. The problem is that the "Auto Size Column" feature is now missing whenever I right-click on any of the column headings. The "Auto Size All Columns" feature is present, but that does not work. When I click on "Auto Size All Columns", it doesn't do anything to the width of the columns. Also, I can not manually adjust the width of the columns by clicking between the columns (so that the cursor turns into the left & right arrows <->).
The Auto Size Column feature works perfectly when I'm using the iTunes Library on my hard drive... it just doesn't work anymore when I'm working in the iTunes Devices on my iPod.
Because of all of the glitches and problems that I've had with all of the iPod updates, I'm still running my iPod on Software Version 1.0. More than likely, this is the cause of my problem... I just wanted to find out if anyone else is having the same problem.
p.s. I hope that I don't have to install the latest Software Version 1.2.1 for my iPod in order to fix this problem... Do I live without being able to adjust the width of the columns, or do I live without all of the glitches and freeze-ups?

  • Finder won't display folder size in "Size" column or Info window

Normally, the Finder window will display a folder's size in the Size column. However, I have one folder which shows as "Zero KB" in the Size column. When I open the General Info window, the Size reads as "Zero KB on disk (Zero bytes) for 0 items."
In order to get the folder size I have to go into the folder, select all folders (there's many), then with either the Summary Info or Inspector window, it'll show the folder size ("185.32 GB on disk").
Why is this occurring in only this folder? Is it because it's a large folder or a folder with many subfolders?
I'm running Snow Lep 10.6.2. The folder is on an external drive in FAT32 format. I've already tried deleting the "com.apple.finder.plist" file and rebooting.
    Thanks for any help.

go to view menu->show view options and check the box 'calculate all sizes". then click "use as defaults".

  • Auto size Column

I am using Oracle DiscovererBI 10g and I have a worksheet column that I am tring to resize. I have auto size column checked, but for some reason the width of the column is always the size of the header and not the size of the largest item in the column. If I go to print preview everything looks fine.
    Any ideas?

    Hi
Take a look at the properties of the item in the Admin tool. One of the properties is default width. When you tell Discoverer to auto size it will resize the column to the bigger of the heading width or the data width, up to the default width defined in Admin, if set. Most of the time the default width is just fine, but for large data items it needs to be adjusted.
Have a go and let me know if this works.
    Best wishes
    Michael

  • Add Right Side Column and Web Parts to custom Master page in SharePoint Online

    Hello everyone,
I hope this is a simple question, however I was fighting the issue it presents for a while. I am in the process of customizing SharePoint Online Look-and-feel with a new layout.
The site collection was created as a
Team Site before I got involved with the project, and populated with numerous sub-sites and pages. I activated required
publishing features, created html with corresponding styles and graphics, and used the Design Manager to convert the html file to the custom Master page. While SharePoint automatically assigned “ContentPlaceHolderMain” div area, I
also used default Oslo page as example to copy sections of the code for dynamic components (left column and navigation, recent items, the ribbon, etc.) from it and placed them in my new master page, pointed all CSS references to
my custom style sheets, etc. Everything works great, however I need to make one last addition -
my task is to make changes to display web parts such as Calendar and Recent Documents in the right column in the Master page.
My custom layout has a header, footer, main pan and two side columns. Most of the default master templates come with the LEFT column already embedded and populated with several placeholder
to serve dynamic content (PlaceHolderLeftNavBarTop, PlaceHolderQuickLaunchTop, PlaceHolderLeftNavBarDataSource, PlaceHolderLeftActions, so on).
My challenge is that I have the RIGHT side column as well, for which I don’t think the default placeholder exists. I need to add a small Calendar box and Recent Documents parts to it, so they
display across the entire site governed by this master page.
    The issue is –
even after activating Publishing features (enabled SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure under Site Collection Level, and SharePoint Server Publishing under the Site
Level), there is no Snippet feature (usually available under the generic Publishing Site); this customization of the Team Site allows using Designer and apply custom templates, themes, so on, just like you would under the Publishing collection, but not the
Snippet utility I could use as the solution to embed the web parts on the master page.
Recreating the entire site under Publishing Collection is not an option due to the directions I was given, I am to use this existing one, and need to see if
there is a workaround to either activate the Snippet feature or use another solution to display the web parts inside of the column in the Master page.
If the only solution is to use Web Part Zone, what are the steps to add it AND populate it with the abovementioned apps?
Can anyone suggest how to create a workaround and add this feature? The environment is role-based so both elements need to be dynamically rendered based on the user’s role and activities.
I am more of a front end designer than developer, so if any custom coding and set up required, please kindly provide some basic steps, if possible?..
I greatly appreciate any help and suggestions!
    Thank You!
    Jeff

Updating your Master Page to also include a right rail should be sraight forward enough with a new div or divs in your master page and then the proper styles to make room for this column as well as position the column.
I have not seen why you cannot find the snippet gallery link when previewing a HTML Master Page in the browser. Have you tried loading the snippet gallery by its url? As an example, for my tenant on SPO, I can load the Snippet Gallery for the olso.master
    with the following url:
    https://pixelmill.sharepoint.com/_layouts/15/ComponentConfigureControls.aspx?ComponentName=TopNavigationNoFlyoutWithStartNode&Url=%2F_catalogs%2Fmasterpage%2Foslo.master
Change the domain to match yours as well as update the "Url" querystring var to point to your master page. See if that loads the snippet gallery.

  • How do I get rid of that annoying right-hand column in Reader 11.0.3?

It just won't go away!  I can't find anything on the menus to get rid of it.  It blocks the view of whichever document I'm trying to read.  What's odd is that when I first opened a PDF document, it looked just fine; but subsequent openings of the same document had that right-hand column blocking about one-fourth of the document, requiring horizontal scrolling.  Who can be bothered?  Please tell me this is an easy fix.  Thank you!

Half of a solution has been offered for this problem: Click on Tools, then click on Tools again. This is so un-obvious that I have to guess it removes the column as a fluke of what's been clicked, not because that is the defined way to remove the column. And the screen shot helped those who haven't seen it. But I've been reading the Freakonomics guys and I have to say that the right question was not asked. Here's the right question:
How can I keep that stupid worthless column from EVER showing up again? I mean, it's nice to have instructions on how to change a tire, but it's even nicer to have a car that doesn't have a blowout every time I try to go for a drive!
I have searched Preferences and cannot find anything that seems to relate to it.
Thanks for your attention to this issue.

  • 4GB File Size Limit in Finder for Windows/Samba Shares?

I am unable to copy a 4.75GB video file from my Mac Pro to a network drive with XFS file system using the Finder. Files under 4GB can be dragged and dropped without problems. The drag and drop method produces an "unexepcted error" (code 0) message.
I went into Terminal and used the cp command to successfully copy the 4.75GB file to the NAS drive, so obviously there's a 4GB file size limit that Finder is opposing?
I was also able to use Quicktime and save a copy of the file to the network drive, so applications have no problem, either.
XFS file system supports terabyte size files, so this shouldn't be a problem on the receiving end, and it's not, as the terminal copy worked.
Why would they do that? Is there a setting I can use to override this? Google searching found some flags to use with the mount command in Linux terminal to work around this, but I'd rather just be able to use the GUI in OS X (10.5.1) - I mean, that's why we like Macs, right?

I have frequently worked with 8 to 10 gigabyte capture files in both OS9 and OS X so any limit does not seem to be in QT or in the Player. 2 GIg limits would perhaps be something left over from pre-OS 9 versions of your software, as there was a general 2 gig limit in those earlier versions of the operating system. I have also seen people refer to 2 gig limits in QT for Windows but never in OS 9 or later MacOS.

  • Auto created FK columns in data modeler

Newbie to sql data modeler and have this question.
When created a relational model, it automatically generated many extra columns for Foreign Keys with notion of (1,2,..) Is there a setting to disable it. I like to have the generated DDL not to include these extra columns . Thanks.

    Hi,
you can create foreign keys in two ways:
    1) using table dialog - no new FK columns are generated
    2) using "New FK Relation" tool - new FK columns are created automatically; However you can tune the process to your preferences:
    - "General Options>General" page - select "Show properties dialog on new object" - as result FK dialog will appear when new FK is created;
    - "General Options>Model>Relational" - select "Delete generated FK columns" - auto generated FK columns are here to help - you always have to define FK columns as part of FK definition (no functional FKs in current release) - you can replace these columns with existing columns and auto generated FK columns will be removed automatically (this cause only auto generated columns).
At the end you can find that auto generated columns are not that bad.
