Auto rotation when editing in iPhoto

When I go from organize to editing mode in iPhoto the photos automatically turn anti clockwise through 90 degrees, I can't find any help which explains this problem, please help.
Flat Panel PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Could it be, that your camera has a feature that rotates the picture that you have taken vertically?? It rotates them 90degres, so it can be viewed on you camera screen without rotating the camera?
I just bought a new camera and it does just that. Any pictures taken vertically are automatically rotated by the camera, so I can view them on the camera screen without tilting the camera 90 degre. And I noticed that on the card, there is an original and a copy which has been rotated (just like iPhot does when you rotate a pic). Maybe you imported the already rotated picture, but the preview (organize) mode contains the thumbs that was not rotated, hence the 90degre rotation between organize and editing mode!!!
just a wild guess

  • Auto-rotating portrait pictures in iPhoto Library

I'm using iPhoto 6.0.5 (316) and when I started importing photos from my old Windows PC, all of my portrait shots were auto-rotated in the library which is awesome. But I just noticed that the last several rolls I've imported aren't doing that. All the images are from the same camera so I'm not quite sure what I did (if anything) to cause the difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The orientation tag is part of the image files EXIF data recorded by your camera when the picture is taken. If iPhoto sees the orientation tag it rotates the image for you.
Unfortunately, there are lots of things you can do to inadvertently strip an image file of the EXIF data. For example, early versions of iPhoto would export photos with most of the EXIF data removed, at least the makernotes portions.
Did you open or view the photos that didn't rotate in any software that you didn't use with the others? If so, that may be what happened.

  • Auto-rotating with Automator/Preview/iPhoto possible?

When I import photos with iPhoto or Image Capture, the images are not actually rotated. When viewed in iPhoto, they have the proper rotation.
But if I try to use Automator to create thumbnails, the thumbnails are not rotated. Is there a way around this? Currently my thumbnail creation is driven by a bash script that I wrote under Linux, but the Linux digital camera tools auto-rotated the actual files when importing, something that iPhoto/Image Capture don't seem to do.
This is the last issue I'm having with moving to OS X, and it is frustrating

Nevermind, it seems impossible to do. I have enhanced my bash thumbnail script to take care of autorotation with tools I pulled from fink (jhead, jpegtran, and others).

  • Major Quality loss when editing in Iphoto 09

    Hi,
I am a new user to Imac and Iphoto and I saw that when I edit an Image in Iphoto, I loose a lot of my original data.
I have found that I can return to the original picture, but I wish to edit (especially using the CROP function) then print the Image on 20x30 cm size and therefore I need all the quality I can get.
When I Crop either JPEG or .RAW formatted images (for example 10 MBytes in size) even if I select the COMPLETE image, I am left with only 4 or 5 Mbytes of data.
It gets much worse when I really Crop a part of the picture.
A 12 Mega pixel photo should supply sufficient data to cover a complete wall, but for some reason a lot of quality is lost when I use any of the editing features.
Am I doing something wrong ?
Should I change any of the settings ?
    Thanks for your advice

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
the only difference is that Iphoto took my quality !!
Are you basing the "quality" loss on visual appearance of the photo or on the resulting size of the jpeg file? If it's the latter that is really not an accurate method. True, some information is lost with a jpeg edit and save (only the first edit in iPhoto results in additional jpeg compression) but, in my experience, you would have to print a VERY large print before seeing any noticeable image degradation. I've compressed jpegs as high as 60%, i.e. a quality setting of 40, and for most all uses up to 5x7 prints haven't seen noticeable image degradation. However, I realize image quality is subjective and open to individual interpretation.
So unless you are visibly seeing image degradation I wouldn't worry about the file size reduction, especially in iPhoto as it's compressed only once no matter how many edits are made and saved. Apple uses a compression algorithm that gives the best image quality for the amount of compression it uses.
The following is from the Usernet FAQ site article "JPEG image compression FAQ, part 1/2':
Subject: [4] How well does JPEG compress images?
Very well indeed, when working with its intended type of image (photographs and suchlike). For full-color images, the uncompressed data is normally 24 bits/pixel. The best known lossless compression methods can compress such data about 2:1 on average. JPEG can typically achieve 10:1 to 20:1 compression without visible loss, bringing the effective storage requirement down to 1 to 2 bits/pixel. 30:1 to 50:1 compression is possible with small to moderate defects, while for very-low-quality purposes such as previews or archive indexes, 100:1 compression is quite feasible. An image compressed 100:1 with JPEG takes up the same space as a full-color one-tenth-scale thumbnail image, yet it retains much more detail than such a thumbnail.

  • Trouble getting adjust panel to come up when editing in iphoto

I've had no trouble editing photos in the past but all of a sudden the adjust panel will not come up when I try to edit a photo. The enhance function works as does the effects panel. Any ideas what could be the problem?

    WAM4:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It may be coming up but located off the screen. On the chance that that's the reason, try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, and see if that will bring it back.
    Do you Twango?

  • Images distorted when editing in iphoto .... software or hardware?

I posted in an iphoto 5 forum post about this and wanted to check here to see if anyone has any ideas about it, as well.
    here's that discussion:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1502109&tstart=0
I am getting these purplish lines/blotches in my images when I move the editing sliders in iphoto 5.
This is what the images look like before I edit (notice the faint geometric patterns throughout the entire image)
and this is what happens after
as is covered in the other thread I have rebuilt the library, repaired permissions, deleted preferences, tried creating a new account, and reinstalled iphoto 5 to no avail.
Here's the wildcard .... I recently had a logic board failure and it was replaced. This is actually the 3rd new board, the first two that they installed were defective(!) Could it be the logic board or video board causing this to happen? It only happens in iphoto and only when the edit sliders are moved.
Do you think that doing an archive and erase could fix this?
Does an archive and erase delete preferences/passwords/settings and the like?
    Thanks in advance
    Henry

To follow up, yesterday I phoned Apple Care and arranged to take my imac to the repair center.
That done, here is my issue, this will be logic board number 4 since mid March. Initially, I took the unit in and a board was ordered. That board was determined bad before I got the machine back and another board was ordered. That board was determined to be faulty, as well. A third board was installed and I got my imac back. Within a few days I noticed intermittent video patterning and random freezeups as described in this topic. I followed all of the suggestions that were given and determined another bad logic board.
This morning I called Customer Relations as has been suggested in many of the threads that I have researched here. The representative was very thorough and cordial, as well as understanding. He ultimately decided that since the machine worked well for 2+ years and only started malfunctioning 2 months ago, that I should take it in to Apple Service one more time for another logic board. It sort of made sense to me, but I was hoping that he would offer a replacement since this is logic board number 4 being replaced. (albeit in a short period of time) He did say that if this one went bad that they would probably relpace the machine (this was not overly reassuring to me)
Are my expectations too high or am I being unreasonable? Should I have been more insistent? Is his decision final, or can I call back and ask for an "appeal"?
Do I actually even have cause to ask for a replacement machine?
Thanks for putting up with my frustration.

  • Photos rotating when uploading from iPhoto to Facebook.

This is driving me crazy! In my iPhoto library my photos are portrait (how I want them) but when I highlight and drag them to Facebook to be part of a post some of the pictures rotate sideways.
Could someone please!!! help me with this.
    Thankyou in advance.

Have you tried to use the "Share" command instead of dragging to the Facebook album? My "Portrait" photos are showing correctly upright when I use the "Share" button in the footer if the iPhoto window.

  • Photos sync OK, but when edited in iPhoto, the original photos still appear.

Photos sync fine to iPhone. However, if I edit (crop) one of these photos in iPhoto, the unedited version still appears on the phone after resyncing. I have tried unchecking the box next to the photo album, then syncing and pulling it completely off the phone. Then I recheck the box and sync the photos back to the phone. The old, unedited versions of the photos still appear on the phone. What to do?? Thanks for your help!!

I am exporting as a JPG. I think I figured out the problem. In the old iPhoto I could export from the Edit menu. On this new version, I have click on the Photos button and go back to the screen that shows the whole event and export from there.
It's a pain and much less efficient but it seems to be working.

  • HT1338 MacBook crashes REPEATEDLY when editting in iPhoto. Any advice?

I take many photos of my birds and new puppy.
I edit, mostly Cropping, almost every photo.
My MacBook has been crashing during the editing of Events, sometimes multiple times, while trying to edit a single event.
I am up to date on all my apps.
I have sent more "Reports" when this problem occurs than I can count.
    Anyone experience this same problem.

  • How do I turn off auto cap when editing a pages document on my iPad?

When I use Pages on my iPad and touch the screen to insert a new word it always starts in upper case as if a new sentence. It does this even if I am in the middle of a sentence. Can I turn this off?

I have some vague memory of people solving this problem by putting a piece of clear tape with an appropriate hole in it over the headset jack. But, it's only a very vague memory. You might try searching the forums for older entries.
I don't use Apple headsets (hate 'em) but don't have this problem. Depending on how attached you are to your current headset, you might want to experiment with others. I've used both the Shure E2c and Etymotic ER6i without any problem.

  • Rotating and saving in iPhoto?

So I rotate and edit in iPhoto, and get it how I like it. I click done- however when I try to upload it to a website, it unrotates it and unsets the edits I've made. What is this? Is it me or the website? What can I do?

How are you accessing the photo to upload? If you access it correctly (in the open/attach window look in the lower left under media ==> photos ==> iPhoto) you will get the current version
click here for a discussion of correctly accessing your photos.

  • Single Monitor for editing in iPhoto?

My iBook does not present true colors when editing in iPhoto.
I have gone back to the PC and Photoshop Elements for Windows XP to edit photos.
Then, I export them to iPhoto.
Two Questions: 1) what is a good connector device to connect the iBook and the PC to my excellent Trinitron monitor 2) Is Photoshop Elements for Mac a good photo editing program? (Better than iPhoto?)

I can't answer #1 but the answer to #2 is a resounding YES. You can set iPhoto to open PSE when you double click on a photo while in iPhoto. As long as you do not change the file name or extension you can do a regular save. If you create a layered file, necessitating a new extension, .psd, then you need to save it to the desktop and then import as a new file.
Back to #1, There are connectors that will let you run the Sony from your PB. One that will let you switch between your Mac and the darkside, I'm not so sure about.

  • IOS 7; iPhone 4S will not auto-rotate

Just downloaded iOS 7, and my screen will not rotate.
I checked the control center, and auto-rotate IS unlocked.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

My iPHone 4 does auto-rotate when unlocked in control center.  Have you tried to turn the phone off and then on again, and/or reset all settings?  It may be something that simple.

  • Portege Z10T and Win7 - cannot get the screen to auto rotate

    Hi
I have installed windows 7 to a Portege z10t and cannot get the screen to auto rotate when flipped to portrait and landscape, I have had a look at the intel graphics properties and cant find anywhere their to configure this any ideas and have googled it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi
Are you sure that you have installed all essential Toshiba tools and utilities as well as Win 7 drivers for this Portege Z10T series?
Toshiba EU driver page provides the essential software like *Tablet Easy Control.*
This utility is necessary for the auto rotation function of the Tablet PC.
I would recommend you to check if all software available on Toshiba EU driver page has been installed and run properly on your notebook

  • Screen auto rotates without tilting the device!

I know this sounds weird but it is! After the upgrade to 4.4.2 when I am doing whatever, doesn't matter what, the screen auto rotates upside down without me even tilting the device towards that direction!! It is really annoying - if I am typing it would make me click on go back or home when I should press space, when playing it makes me fall down and die, or turn right instead of left, when browsing it makes me click on something else, etc etc. I hoped that 4.4.4 would solve that - it solved indeed the flickering of the screen but it didn't the auto rotation. So, what should I do with my crazy accelerometer?! I guess it's the software not hardware... Anyway, I know how to turn off the auto-rotation of the screen from settings but I would love my device to still be able to auto rotate when I need it and not to have to make a manual rotation! Thank you for your answers!!

I had the same issue after upgrading from 4.2 to 4.3. Sony advised me to do a repair update via Pc Companion, which fixed it. Make sure you back up to both sd card using tablet app, and to pc via companion, and restore from both, otherwise you may lose any apps you have installed. I found that out that out the hard way :-)
