Auto shutdown w/75% battery after 10.4.11 Intel update

First, let me say, I am not too computer savy for anything other than the basics. After installing the latest Mac OS X Update (Intel) my laptop has become somewhat unstable, needing to be restarted several times and freezing up twice needing a forced quit.
Most irritable is when on battery, the systems shuts off when hitting 75% remaining power. Ever since this update I feel like I'm back in the PC world.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

J.L. sez:
i was planning on booting off the cd or my laptop and running a permissions repair...
I sez:
What were you updating ???
I don't think you really want to do that. Booting Barb's computer off a CD or DVD and running the permission repair from Disk Utility on the optical disk would repair permissions to what user ??? You can repair or verify from the disk utility when running off a system installer DVD but I don't think its a good idea to repair permissions that way.
As for the rest of it, if it will boot off a system installed in an external USB or FW drive or a disk in an external CD or DVD player, then I would suspect that you may have to archive & install a new system on the iMac.
Good luck.

  • Computer will not boot up after OS 10.4(intel) update

I received a pop-up today that indicated updates required for iTunes, Quicktime and the OS. I believe the iTunes and Quicktime proceeded with no problem. The OS update (which had Intel in parenthesis) was a huge download and after a long period of time I received a message that download failed, file moved to trash. Also received prompt to Cancel or Restart. I selected restart. The computer never rebooted it is perpetually displaying the apple symbol in the center of the white screen with a cursor indicating loading. I shut the power down manually several times but to no avail. Is there some kind of key to hold down to go into safe mode?

OK, I used my MAC OS X install disk to get to the Disk Utilities. I ran verify disk check and repaired a minor "Volume Header" issue. This did not solve anything. I can choose to restart by the Install disk or the installed 10.4.11 OS both fail to start. Is it necessary to re-install OS X?

What "auto shutdown problem" are you talking about?

  • Should an auto-shutdown because of critical battery change kernel_task usage at all?

I only ask because when my MacBook Pro 13" (Early 2011) 10.7.2, shutdown because of low battery, I put it on charge. The next day when I booted it up again it started running super-mega slow. The only reason I can find for this is kernel_task at 330mb, and about 300 % CPU.
It runs fine in Safe Mode.
The whole auto-shutdown is the only change I made between normal speed and claw-my-own-eyes-out speed.

    Fixed:
Plugged in power supply and rebooted, now it works fine.

  • After running Appstore, the iphone cannot auto shutdown after the predefined time

After running Appstore, the iphone cannot auto shutdown after the predefined time.

Pressing the Home button only quits the selected application only. Doing so with Safari available will quit Safari, but this does not reset the iPhone.
The only way to Reset an iPhone is by pressing and holding the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release.
No apple stores in the area but my sister and mom are going to an area where there is one so I guess I'll give it to them to take along and see if they can swap it out for another or fix it.
You must make an appointment at an Apple Store, so unless you are able to do so and unless you are able to go with them (especially if an exchange might be involved), I suggest giving AppleCare a call instead.

    Hello,
My Macbook when run on battery after 40% shuts off without a warning. Is there a way to avoid it? Is there a setting in the battery preferences where I can change to avoid shut down?

If you can suggest me with the above problem will be of great help. Thank you in advance.

    Same issues here:
    - When powering the MB on the battery, the MB can go off suddenly without warning, usually at about 20% but, since it started about 2 months ago, it occurred also at 7%, between 30 and 40% and even 70% once… It occurs every time when on batteries. And every time, if I start the computer again, it will shut down suddenly without warning after a few seconds/minutes. When back on mains, it can be powered on normally. It does not go to sleep, it's a complete and sudden power off without warning.
    - The battery at about 173 cycles sees its capacity dwindling way too much (it's been dwindling since day one, but it's going down faster and faster, the graph since November 2007 in MiniBatteryLogger is edificatory). The capacity right now is between 2900 and 3460 depending of the feel of the day. It's been calibrated regularly since day one in July 2007. Note that the capacity dwindled from its original capacity but never went higher than this value even if along the way it recovered sometimes more capacity.
I have tried all the tricks from calibrating a little bit more often, reseted the SMC, even a complete system reinstall (that I wanted to do anyway as I had to get rid of the evil spotlight bug). All this to no avail.
    So what? :-/

  • Auto-lock is not working after last update

After installing the newest IOS update the auto-lock features quit working. It was set to auto-lock after 5 minuets of inactivity, I have reset that to 2 minuets and it still does not auto-lock. If I forget to manually lock it after using it my battery runs down.
About the same time that I did the IOS update I installed the Printer Pro app from the App Store. I have deleted this app from my IPAD but auto-lock still does not work.

Have you tried resetting your iPad?
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds).
    No data will be lost.

  • One application "failed to quit" on auto shutdown

This has been happening daily now for perhaps a month, and it's got me stumped. I can't identify any pattern or anything.
I have my system scheduled to shutdown overnight and start up in the morning, and have had this same setting for years. What's happening lately is that the unattended shutdown apparently times out and I get a message saying logout failed "because the application [X] failed to quit." Now the really weird bits -
'X' is almost literally a different application every day, and it's rarely if ever attributable to an unsaved document. I think it's happened at least once with every single one of the applications I regularly have running. Sometimes it's an application I've used in the course of the day, and other times it's one I haven't touched. But it happens every day.
if I manually select the shutdown menu command at any time, including after finding that the auto shutdown has again failed, the shutdown runs smoothly with no application failing to quit.
I've run 'repair disk' in Disk Utility and also Disk Warrior and applejack several times each, as well as a weekly scheduled batch of maintenance tasks (using Cocktail). None of these operations has changed the behaviour come shutdown time.
Has anyone else seen this?  Solutions anyone?  Thanks.

    I'm 'bumping' this one.
Still happening very consistently, and becoming a real problem. Since originally posting I've run all the disk operations many times over, as well as one or two system updates at least. Nothing has changed, it just happens like this every night.
The only thing I can offer as a (sort of) pattern is that the application that's most often the one reported as preventing logout is HistoryHound. And it would appear to be one of the first ones the system tries to quit in its shutdown, since most of the apps are still running. However it does still vary - it happens on a different app sometimes, and it happens on some app when HH wasn't even running. So not sure that's much of a clue - unless perhaps certain apps are taking longer to quit than the system expects (or something??? - scratching for clues here ...... )
    Can anyone help? Please ....

  • Help for your Android S5 Battery after a 5.0 install

Return your Samsung Android S5 Battery back to normal!
First, delete any unused apps and what unneeded apps can’t be deleted should be shut down! Also recheck your remaining apps for current update to work with 5.0 and there usage settings.
Second, do a "System Wipe cache clear". This will improve your battery life cycle in a 2 to 3 days and at the same time remove certain 5.0 problems (not all). The good thing about the Wipe cache is that no needed files are deleted as in doing a factory data reset.
Third, install a very good app that will save you even more battery power. This app can be found at the Google Play Store, “Snapdragon BatteryGuru.” This battery program will require 4 to 7 day to fully learn your phone use habits so continue to use your phone in a normal manner. Also keep your Screen lighting at a maximum of 20 % and do not use Auto level mode. Turn off your Smart Net Switch setting but again continue to use your device as normal as possible.
Forth, When the first 2 to 3 day period has passed then do a battery rebuild charge program ( but only if needed) which will restore your battery to almost like new condition. After following and doing all of the above your phone’s battery life should be normal or perhaps even somewhat longer life cycles than before.
    System Wipe cache clear
    Power down your S5
Press/hold volume up and home keys, then also press/hold power key
When phone starts to vibrates, release power key
When the system recovery menu displays then release volume up/home keys
Use volume keys to navigate to the wipe cache partition and press power key to select
When you’re finished, press power key to reboot your phone system.
    Battery Rebuild Charge Program
The S5 Li-ion battery needs to have a rebuild charge after the large 5.0 update in most cases. Do a full 6-8 hour charge with device in sleep mode, next run it down to about 45-50 % and then a 4-5 hour charge. After that use your S5 and take it down to 30%. Another 6-8 hour charge and then down to no lower than 20-25% and one fuller 8 hour charge. At that point your battery should be rebuilt back to a normal life cycle.  The above information is posted only as a work-around-fix to help return that S5 back to a more useful condition.
Please feel free to post back on your results positive or negative.
    Thank you,
    Galaxy Class

BatteryGuru will not always install in all S5 phones with the 5.0 update. Sorry for that but I have tested the rest of my posted package for 5.0 battery problem and have had very good results with much improve battery life.

  • Auto shutdown the DB

I have the Linux version Oracle 10g run a bit long over 1 years, but in this 2 weeks , DB run few day(may 5-10 days) will auto shutdown.
Have any log file can check back is what problem to shutdown?
Which log file can help to track it / Log file Path is ?
    Thx a lot.

Look in alert log, then follow up with any trace logs that the alert logs refer you to.
Find out if there is any scheduled job that is supposed to do or has normally always been doing a shutdown and restart of the database, but for some reason, can no longer startup the database after the scheduled shutdown.
For instance, if you normally do a weekly shutdown to do a cold backup, check if the shutdown part is always successful and the startup part has been failing.
The same thing happened for the Web Server at one of my new clients. The weekly shutdown and startup for a full system backup has been working for years, but all of a sudden malfunctioned. Every Monday, Apache is down. it was later traced to the script scheduled in weekly cron job. The script was referencing a module that no longer works with a latest OS patch. After it was fixed, it works ok.

  • Satellite M-500 Auto shutdown

My Satellite M-500 will auto shut-down at most of the time while loading the windows 7.
If I'm lucky, my windows 7 will able to load into desktop but after a while, it's will auto shutdown again.
I've re-format my hard disk and re-install the windows 7 operating system but the problem is still not solved.
But one thing that I now wondering is, I've swap the hard disk to my company laptop, both of the laptop will working well. No auto shut-down any more.
    Please advice.
    Thank you.

It sounds like it could be a hardware issue.

  • Macbook pro auto shutdown

    my work need win7 system,so i get a win7 ultimate
recently i find out when i run some applications for 3~4 hours in win7 system,my macbook pro auto shutdown...even the power adapter is on,the battery still run out.
this never happened in my macbook pro before when i use leopard or XP system

Thanks for taking so much time in helping me.
    Just an update:
    2 loops/passes done - no errors.
Called up Digital Hub and talked to the technician, he says there are 3 possible problems:
    1. Battery (which is still inside the laptop) may cause some disturbances with the electric current
    2. Software related - most likely re-formatting may be needed
    3. Video card may have failed, which means complete change of the logic board ----> worst case
I'm crossing my fingers that it's either of the first two.

My Iphone 3GS auto shutdown and power on

this is happening to my phone, i changed the battery, i tryed the logic board in another phone and it worked fine, there dosnt seem to be much else in there, still cant get it going.

  • IPhone 4 battery still draining fast after ios 5.0.1 update

5.0.1 update did not help, my battery still drains just as fast as it did on 5.0. My phone used to last 2 days no problem, now it lasts about 6 hours, I could go to bed at 5% and wake up with 3%, now if I got to bed with 25% it's dead by morning. I have all iCloud services turned off, only Maps turned on for location services, notifications for Phone, Messages, Reminders, Calendar, CNBC RT and Words Free. I have 2 email accounts, one is a pop3 and the other Exchange, both are set to pull every hour and preview is turned off. Is the issue with notifications? the only thing that has changed from 4 to 5 is I have notifications turned on and my reminders & tasks are synced with Exchange. I'm starting to think the issue is with notifications, I tried to turn off email notifications for the lock screen but they still show up.
Are we getting another update after 5.0.1 soon for the continued battery drain issue?
Email notifications continue to display for locked screen even though the option says Off, is there something else I'm missing?

Do we really need another thread, with over 7,000 posts already on other threads?
