Auto slide play vs manual advance

I just had a rotten experience. I drove 1 1/2 hours to another city to give a presentation using Keynote slides.
As I was setting up, I noticed that the slides automatically advanced. I had no idea why. I didn't make any settings to do that and didn't want it. I have other presentations that work fine.
Since I am not a Keynote expert, I don't know the myriad commands and menus. I also think Keynote and Pages have the worst UIs of all Apple's products - items are hidden under multiple layers with odd names that you wouldn't recognize.
So, for 20 minutes, I frantically searched through the Keynote menus looking for anything that said Auto advance, timed advance, auto anything - nothing. It ought to be in plain view under the View command, the most logical place.
I looked through the Keynotes Help menu and found absolutely nothing related to auto advancing slides. There was no internet at that location, so I could only use the internal help info.
Finally, in desperation, I exported the talk to PPT and put it on my host's PC, thinking Keynotes had a bug. Well, it behaved exactly the same way.
So, my host sat at the computer manually advancing the slides, and backing them up when they jumped for a hour talk. THANKS APPLE.
When I got home, I spent an hour combing through all the menus trying to find anything about auto advancing the slides.
I knew from looking at the language in the menus in Keynotes and Pages, that Apple's terms wouldn't be ordinary terms used to describe advancing slides.
I finally found it. Buried under the Inspector, the left hand icon Document Inspector, under the heading Document, under the Presentation pull down menu were the terms "Normal" and "Self-Playing". The clue, of course, was Self-Playing. Clicking Normal fixed the problem.
This item was badly named and four levels deep - Inspector/Document Inspector/Presentation/Normal.
Maybe this note will help others find this item is Apple's maze of confusing menus.

command is buried somewhere inside Keynote. I can't remember where.
The name of the command has nothing to do with starting/stoping auto advance.
This is one of the worst UI things from Apple. Reminds me of XP.

  • Minimum version of QuickTime for Windows for Manual Advance QT exports?

My wife is giving a presentation on Friday and must present on a Windows machine. Her presentation includes a dozen short, embedded video clips, so the only trustworthy way to not completely ruin the flow of the presentation is to export the Keynote to Quicktime.
No fancy builds or transitions, just standard dissolves and the previously mentioned embedded videos.
I'm wondering what the lowest version of QuickTime Player for Windows is that will play a manual advance .mov file exported from Keynote '09.
    Thanks.

The computer should be able to play that file with QT, what happens when you try to open it?
Here is a sample of H.264 you can test on the computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1425
I was able to play this with a 2.4 GHz Intel pentium 4 cpu with 512 ram, I have a computer with 1.8 Intel pentium 4 with 512 ram, I can try it on

  • QuickTime Playback and Manual Advance Problem

    Hi,
I am having trouble playing or manually advancing my QuickTime presentation that was created in Keynote. Is this an export setting problem? Shouldn't I be able to play the the presentation using the mouse or the arrow keys? (The presentation contains video, images, many transitions and the entire presentation is in Full HD scale). I would appreciate if someone had any suggestions on how to resolve this problem.
    Siw

Be sure that you are playing it through QuickTime and not Windows Media Player.

  • Can you manually advance a Captivate slide presentation with a remote control and a projector.

I have published a large volument of PowerPoint presentations with Captivate 5.0 and intend to distribute the presentations to live instructors as a means to control content delivered live by instructors to the students.  The files are aggregrated into groups of lessons and published to PDF with a Table of Contents.
We need to avoid manually advancing the show from the laptop.
Having difficulty determining how to use remote control via laptop and projector to advance the next slide or presentation. Can't get it to work. Was able to do so previously with PowerPoint slides converted to PDF shows. Remotes/Laser pointers worked fine. But now that I have processed the shows through Captivate 5.0 can seem to find a remote that will work with the new PDF or SWF with our systems.
We use a laptop and projection system, so need to be able to advance the show to the next "slide" manually and are trying to figure out how to do it with a remote control.
Has anyone else experienced this challenge and did you find a solution?.

    Hi Carey,
if you can apply the letter "A" for "next" to your remote control?
Then you could add a shortcut to your buttons in the captivate file.
    In deapth:
Go to a PPT importet slide (using the "click mouse" option to continue".
Click somewhere in the screen (clickbox_xx will be selected).
Properties - Action - Shortcut. Click it and press "A".
    Click somewhere on the stage.
Now when you press your next button on the remote, Captivate will receive an "A" and continue to the next slide.
    Hope this helps

  • Can QT do a manual advanced slide show?

Can QT replace flash and allow me to do a manually advanced slide show for my website?
Or is this a bad idea ?
    Thanks,

Look to using jQuery instead of Flash.  There are a variety of redy-made solutions available, just search Google or visit the Dreamweaver forum and ask there.

  • Trying to use Adobe Encore to create a manual advance keynote BD-ISO

    Hi All,
    Background:
I'm a media designer that produces corporate media content for a recruiting firm.
    Objective:
I'm  trying to devise a way for presenters in our sales offices to run  standardized group interview and training HD keynote shows without the use of a DVD player or a laptop on their LCD screens.
Laptops=  every manager needs an apple computer and keynote software to run the  content + its messy to have to manage wired connections to the mounted  LCD panels all the time.
DVD Players= any updates that  are required to this content from time to time make the idea of  re-shipping physical DVD's logistically undesirable.
    Proposed Solution:
Perminently  integrate a BD-ISO (menu) compatible HD media player into our office  setups that will run manual advance Keynote BD-ISO's (created in Encore)  where any new updates can just be downloaded from a central server in  the form of a Blu-ray master iso image by the end-user, dropped on their  USB flash drive, and played through the media player.
Here's the workflow I've come up with (Problem to follow):
    1. Design a 1280x720 keynote presentation in Apple iWork's Keynote '09
    2. Export a timed (Intervals: 5 sec/between each slide & 2 sec/between each object animation) h.264 | 1280x720 | 29.97 quicktime .mov file
    3. Create Blu Ray Encore Project (1280x720, h.264, 29.97)
    4. Import .mov file as timeline
    5. Insert chapter markers at the beggining of every animation/transition (On diagram below- I'm talking about Ch. 3 & 5)
    6. Insert a second chapter marker directly before each of the  previous set of chapter markers as close together as encore will allow (On diagram below- I'm talking about Ch. 2 & 4)
    7. Set "end action" on each of the second set of chapter points (Ch. 2 & 4 below) to "Link back to here" so that the still image hold that occures after each "keynote animation" (thanks to the 2 sec hold time I set in the Keynote export- see step 2 above) is isolated so the playback loops on that chapter (which is a still frame because of the 2 sec pause between animations as set in keynote export).
Note on this technique: Idea is to set up the timeline and chapter end actions so that the playback loops on a few identical frames that exist between the two "extremely-close-together" chapter points (creating a "pause" effect) until the end user hits "Next Chapter" button on remote to jump to the proceeding chapter that contains the next keynote animation or tranistion.
    Diagram:
    (timeline->    ...---------------Ch.2<-- -->Ch.3(beggining of  animation)-------------------------------------(end of animation)Ch.4<-- -->Ch.5------------------------->)
    8. Set "First Play," "Title Button," and "Timeline End Action" to Ch.1  of the timeline (so it starts there when ISO is activated and loops  back to there at the end of the presentation).
    9. Export as "Blu-ray" Image
    10. Load iso file on a USB flash drive, plug it into BD-ISO (menu) supported media player, and run the ISO and Voila!! = HD Keynote presentation running from BD-ISO file on a media player. PERFECT SOLUTION....
    PROBLEM:
One of the most marketable (due to affordable price-point) BD-ISO (full menu support) media players is the HDX BD1. When I run the ISO file on this unit, it will play the first chapter, and pause and loop on chapter 2 like it is supposed to, creating the pause effect; But when I select "next chapter" it says "cannot_execute"- and I cannot proceed to the next transition/animation. I've previewed the setup in the encore preview feature and it behave's perfectly.
I'd be quick to say its a hardware issue but I've checked out several YouTube videos with people demoing this exact media player running and navigating feature film BD-ISO's (selecting "next chapter" and all) without any issues at all.
I've mastered something similar to this technique using DVDSP on SD DVD's, because DVDSP allows me to infinitley pause playpack ON each chapter point, not even needing the use of the "loop" feature I've set up in encore; But Adobe Encore doesn't offer a "pause" end action so I've come up with this as the next best thing. Although it doesn't play back properly on a full BD-ISO NAVI supported media player.
    QUESTIONS:
    1. Based on this setup, is there anything obvious I'm missing in Adobe Encore that would eleviate this playback problem on the media player?
    2. Is there another authoring workflow within Encore that would allow me to acheive Keynote motion graphic, manual-advance slideshows?
    Thanks for help in advance.

    Hi Chad,
The most probable explanation is that Encore is creating incorrect navigation commands. It is well known and documented that Encore Blu-ray navigation works only for the simplest cases.
This should be easy to fix using BluStreak Tracer, Rivergate Software's upcoming post-authoring solution:
    http://blustreak.dvdafteredit.com/blustreak-tracer-macintosh
If you will prepare a small test case (1 GB or less) and post it on an FTP server, I will take a look and attempt to update it for you. You can contact me through our web site's contact page.
    Regards,
    Larry

  • Manual advance? Not always.

    HI,
This is my first attempt using Encore DVD2. I am playing with some of the features and am having a problem with slideshows.
I want to have a biography section on the DVD I am working on. The bios range from 2 to 3 pages each. They are snapshots of a timeline from another program, stored as BMPs and imported to Encore, apparently as PNGs. If I set the manual advance button for the bio it seems to apply the manual function to only the first slide and then after you advance to the second it displays the next slides for only the default 6 seconds and then goes to black. It won't even do the end function of going back to the bio menu. I did find that on some bios, if I click next chapter in the preview it will pop back to the last slide and if you click again, it will, sometimes, go to the menu like it directed too. Oh yeah, if I turn off the general manual advance and apply it slide by slide I get the same result.
Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? I am waiting for the Adobe Classroom in a Book on Encore 2.0 to show up and it might answer some of this, in the meantime I'm hoping someone might have some thoughts on this.

    Jeff,
Thanks for answering, sorry I took so long to read your response.
I am not advanced enough yet to do anything esoteric. I'm just proud that I can start the program.
I checked the overide for all the menu buttons and everthing says "Not Set"
In the Slideshow options I have
Unchecked... Fit slideshow to audio duration, Loop audio (I have no audio behind the biographies, Random Pan and zoom.
The checked item is Manual Advance.
I have the slide duration set to 6 seconds (default I think)
    There are no transitions selected.
No matter what I did, when I previewed the slide show, only the first slide was manual advance. I tried different slide durations, including 0, just to see what would happen.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
I'm hoping my Classroom in a Book book shows up soon.
    Thanks
    Dave

  • Problem with Manual Advance in Windows!

I just made a KeyNote presentation and saved it as a keynote to play it on my Mac. I also had to export it as a quicktime since in the presentation room the only computer I was told to use was a PC. When I was testing at home the keynote as quicktime on a windows PC i noticed that I wasn't able to actually pass the slides myself but it was automatic (1 second each slide approximately), just like if it was a video. Nonetheless, in my Mac I could perfectly change them myself.
I've already selected to have Manual Advance and I don't really want to use power point as the presentation gets worse.
I have the presentation in a couple of days!!
    Thanks.

I have same problem as yours at my project but think about that your project has an jar,dll and properties files these file have to inserted into java sub directory also the jar file must be added into current library(for windows). My problem as yours but OS is linux so little different.
for use the editor I advice the Oracle JDeveloper or more simple JCreator these are simple but not seems confused.
you have files for your editor program(jar, dll, properties).
    rxtx.jar \jdk\jre\lib\ext
    dll \jdk\bin
jar files must be introduced to editor's library
Note: all API comm additions must removed for clear connection most important.

  • Slideshow Manual Advance Making Audio Pause

I have a slideshow as a part of a DVD I am working on. My customer wants a piece of audio to play in the background and have the user manually advance through the slides. The problem is, that when I have the Manual Advance button checked it pauses the audio when either Fit To Audio or Fit To Slides is checked. Either way the audio is not seamless.
Does anyone out there know that I am missing something here or do you know of a workaround?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Thank you for the fast response. I figured as much because I try everything before I go to a discussion board with my problems.
    I appreciate it.

  • Keynote Movie Export with Manual Advance doesn't work posted on MobileMe

    Hi,
After exporting a Keynote Presentation to Quicktime with Manual Advance function checked the Manual Advance function is working perfectly.
However, after I post the same Quicktime movie on my Mobile Me gallery (or a webpage via iWeb) the Manual Advance only works on slide 1 taking it to slide 2.
When I click to advance at slide 2 it returns to slide 1 instead of going to slide 3...
    Any suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Clayton

This could be the old bug that causes this if the movie wasn't fully loaded. Try waiting till the movie fully loads (if it's not showing a progress bar, just wait a few min as it will probably load fully in that time). Then try it again. In my tests with older versions (haven't tested 09) this was the case...clicking on anything before the movie fully loaded sent you back to slide 1.

  • IDVD slideshow in manual advance mode

Has anyone found a solution to using manual advance for slides in iDVD slideshow. My slideshows created in iDVD will only advance or reverse using the arrows on the minicontrol panel that take you supposidely to the beginning or end of the slideshow. Inotherwords the arrows on the screen do not work nor does the left/right control on the panel work. Interestingly when you press the doublheaded arrows to go to beginning or end it does show on the screen a chapter number as each slide advances. Since I haven't seen any messages on this subject recently, I assume it is a known problem with no solution at this time. Any insights appreciated.

That's pretty much how the slide show works with iDVD although different brands (and models) of DVD players may use different buttons.
The arrows on the screen created by iDVD aren't "hot" - they are just there to act as a "prompt" to the viewer to push a button on the DVD remote. iDVD has a provision to not include the arrows.

  • Manual advance quicktime export not working

new to keynote, trying to export an interactive high quality quicktime, but manual advance is not working once it exports. I have lots of embedded video files that won't advance once clicked on either. Not sure if they are the problem. Any thoughts on how I can export a quicktime that I can manually click through?? Thanks for any help you can offer.

    HA!
That's a great one to play at Parties!!
BTW - that's a great way to do one-offs of sections you want to send out. HOWEVER - a problem there too - if you have a CLIP selected, FCP won't know if you are exporting that cut or the in/out point. Make sure everything is DE-selected. You'll notice a color shift in the timeline indicating the IN/OUT area when you are good to go.
Glad you fixed, now GET BACK TO WORK!

  • Any way to manually advance photos?

    Hi Gang,
I'm a photographer, and I'd like to use Apple TV in the studio so clients can proof their photos. Is there any way to NOT use the slide show, but show photos with the ability to manually advance through?
    Thanks!
    Rob

    Hey Rob,
Actually, the manual doesn't have it right.
You have to start the slideshow, then hit PAUSE: NOW you can use the back << and forward >> arrows buttons on the remote.
I have tried to use the back/forward buttons while the slideshow is running, but they seem to do nothing. You must pause the slideshow first. I usually use 3 or 4 seconds per photo, so maybe that is not enough time for the arrows to act. If I used 10 or 15 seconds, maybe you could interrupt with arrows. Haven't tried it.
Absolutely love having my photos always available on the big screen though!
    Enjoy!!

  • Manual advance of playlist possible ??

hi. I'm running iTunes on my IBM ThinkPad. Even though it is a great piece of software, there is still one thing missing !!! How can I manually advance the playlist ??? (I don't want the software to do that when the track is finished.)
Greetings from the city of Kawasaki, Kanagawa prefecture, Japan
    IBM ThinkPad   Windows XP Pro

one thing you could try is unchecking all the checkboxes to the left of the tracks in the playlist. (a quick way would be to open the playlist, select all the tracks, hold down the Ctrl key, and click one of the boxes.)
the songs in the playlist would play one at a time, then.
