Auto software update - when's it coming back?

Anybody know when the auto software update program is coming back? I miss that - it was a lifesaver for me, when it was still available.

Do you mean ThinkVantage System Update, or are you referring to something else?

Gray screen could be any number of things, bad third party at boot kext file, a bad Apple one, a bad install/upgrade of OS X, drive corruption etc.

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

Also read the instructions from the section entitled "Update your device using iTunes" at the link below.

  • Getting an error message that unable to check for software update when trying to download new iOS 8.0.2 update ?? Can someone help ???

Getting an error message of unable to
check for software update when trying to update to
ios 8.0.2. Can someone help ??

    Howdy there otss1979,
It sounds like you are unable to download the iOS 8.0.2 update either, over the air, or using iTunes. If you are updating the software on your phone in Settings > General > software update I would recommend starting with this article:
Resolve issues with an over-the-air iOS update
If you are using iTunes, I would use this article instead:
Resolve iOS update and restore errors in iTunes
If you are getting a specific error number, the following article will help you get that resolved:
Resolve iOS update and restore errors
If this does not resolve the issue, could you please write the error message you are getting word for word for me?
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • Dell - Alienware Laptop. When is it coming back in stock??

    Hey guys,
This laptop has been out of stock for over 4 months now and I am looking forward to getting this laptop, but when is it coming back in stock?
    Thanks.
    Dell - Alienware Laptop / Intel® Core™ i7 Processor / 18.4" Display - Space Black
    Model: BBY-XD1X1| SKU: 3612116

Unfortunately they don't give us any idea on product availability so I'd be unable to answer when that model will be back in stock.
I do know that we've seen quite a few new models at the store I work at so it might be worth it to call your local Best Buy to see if they have any in (as it's not listed as an online only model). If they do not have it in stock maybe it's something they can order in for you and get it on one of the truck shipments to the store from the distribution center.
Looks like a nice rig hopefully you can find it.

  • Auto software update won't check automatically-have to manually check

I have a brand new macbook pro and the auto update for software updates doesn't work properly. With my old imac, all I had to ever do was to log in and it would check and find the updates. I constantly have to check for these updates myself, manually. I even changed my setting to check 'daily' and that doesn't work either. If anyone has a fix, please let me know too.

Hi Kappy... just wanted to give you an update. I was working with Apple (by phone) to correct this update problem. While going back and forth, I ran into a problem whereby my 3 month old macbook died. Wouldn't turn on at all. Went to the Apple Store Genius Bar and they ended up replacing the Logic Board. Anyways, it fixed this auto-update problem. Seems to be updating now without a problem. Thanx for all your help here.
One question for you, if you know... Apple had me move a '[email protected]' file onto my desktop as it didn't belong where it was. Can I just delete this file or do I need to put it somewhere else? Have no idea where it goes. fyi... I don't have mobile-me.

  • Having problem with Auto Software Updates

    Hi there,
I having trouble with updating all software updates on my iMac. Some of updates being downloaded but they are not installing.
after downloading it, something stopping installation... and this is happing with each and every update.
    please Help.
    -Sonu

    Some general advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 4.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

  • Auto Software Update

Software Update has asked me to install an update for "Apple Remote Desktop Client" If I don't have or plan to use that application, should I still install this update? On my intel iMac I had many problems after upgrading to Leopard. But I erased by zeroing out the drive then reinstalled Leopard. Then I used the option to ignore the ARD update. Now it really works fast like a new Mac. Permission repair is as fast as I have ever had with Tiger. And there are no SUID permission warnings. Should I install the ARD update?

if you dont have or use it it doesnt really matter, but shouldnt do any harm installing it

  • How to undo OS software update from 10.8.3 back to 10.8.2?

    Hi there,
I just updated my OS to 10.8.3. I have a Macbook Pro (mid 2012)
I originally wanted to install Windows 7 via Boot Camp.
In the recent 10.8.3 update, there is an update for Boot Camp (Boot Camp 5)
However, after I updated the OS update, I found out that Boot Camp 5 only supports 64-bit Windows 7. I have the 32-bit version.
    So now I'm stuck.
Can someone please help me and tell me how to undo the software update?
    Thank you,

There is no way to downgrade unless you have a backup of your old 10.8.2 system. If you do, you can restore to that state.
You may want to look here for other options:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4904594?start=0&tstart=0
I don't really know anything about Boot Camp, so I can't comment on the solution there.
