Auto start OC4J instance if not running?

Is there a way for get Forms Developer to start my OC4J instance if its not running or would this be a bad/impractical idea? Its a pain having to navigate to the menu option to start it all the time.
Thanks
Richard

Richard,
this is an enhancement that is on our list, not sure when this will be in.

Gurus - Can you please advice on this. Basically have developed a form and couple of users want to access that but get error " page cannot be displayed" and I figured out the "Start OC4J instance" windows gets closed automatically after some hours.
so I wanted this OC4J instance to run 24*7 ( always) without closing by itself. Please advice how could I do that.

Thanks a lot Steve,
Just wanted to find out if there is no other work around on this except to have the Oracle App Forms server to install and up and running?
I have 11g DB , so do I have to have 11g Oracle Apps Server or 10g Oracle apps server will be sufficient as the installed Devsuite is in 10g. Please advice
OR
Is there way we can setup this Oracle Apps forms server from the OEM console? or we have to do a seperate install for this Apps server.
Other option I thought, which I am not sure will work out is the creat a scheduled task in windows and have this "Start OC4j Instance" scheduled to run always. Any ideas/commments on this.
Thanks again for your inputs.

Though I made the modification and re-start the OC4J instance, I could see the same error and behavior.
Can anyone help me to resolve this issue please?

This is bit strange. It should work. I tested and works fine for me.
Can you remove the entry from opmn.xml and make sure no typo in server.xml and try again. You might want to reload OPMN (opmnctl reload) and then try restarting OC4J (opmnctl startproc ias-component=OC4J).
Note that value (-DcheckForUpdates) set in opmn.xml overrides the value set in server.xml:

Have you installed any new software or OS updates lately? It sounds like your OS can't find Java any more because your computer's environment settings have been modified or perhaps Java was uninstalled. A quick test of Java is to open a Command Window (CMD) and type "Java -version" (without the quotes). If you get an error this indicates that your PATH environment variable no longer includes the directory where Java is installed. You may only need to clean up the PATH environment setting to get things working again, or you may need to reinstall Java.
Hope this helps,

• Cannot start OC4J instance after specifying default java.security.manager

Hi All,
I am using OracleiAS 10.1.3.4 and trying to make use of the new User and Role APIs introduced in 10.1.3.1.
While trying to get an object of IdentityStore using the following code, I got this error -
java.security.PrivilegedActionException: oracle.security.idm.ConfigurationException: java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (oracle.security.jazn.JAZNPermission getOC4JIntegrationData)
oidFactory = (IdentityStoreFactory) AccessController.doPrivileged(
new PrivilegedExceptionAction()
public Object run() throws IMException
IdentityStoreFactoryBuilder builder =
new IdentityStoreFactoryBuilder();
return builder.getIdentityStoreFactory();
I then tried specifying the default security manager in start JAVA options for my oc4j instance - Djava.security.manager. I also verified that my java policy file is present under $ORACLE_HOME/j2ee/oc4j_soa/config/java2.policy. But the issue is - once I put this default secirity manager in startup options in opmn.xml, the oc4j instance does not get started, it gives following error -

Ankit,
Check your syntax for the datasource. If you migrated from file-based to OID, then you should look at this link:

• How to start oc4j instance in linux

I need the oracle report server to generate reports via the call from JSP.
But the response contains no data. But i think that the problem is that the oc4j instance is not started or the port number i am using in the URL is wrong.
I have two questions in my mind.
1) How to start the oc4j instance in linux
2) How to find the port number of the oracle report server. will it be stored in any files.
Pls provide some inputs on this query.

Hello,
1) How to start the oc4j instance in linuxYou have not specified what version, so for standalone you can use the following command:
java -jar oc4j.jar
In 10.1.3 you need to use the oc4j.cmd/oc4j.sh file to start and stop OC4J.
If you are using the Application Server, then please use opmnctl start and stop the OC4J instance.
2) How to find the port number of the oracle report server. will it be stored in any files.
Please post this to the Reports forum.
Hope this helps.

It has already been 6 days from your post, my apology for responding so late, but it is my habit to help only the leftovers, which the other contributors missed.
Toggle the hold switch make sure there is no red showing.
To reboot an iPod. (Or RESET in Apple iPod jargon)
Press Menu and Center button for about 10 secs till the Apple logo comes ON , this would not erase any data from your iPod.
I would advice you to leave the iPod charging for about 4 hours, if it has been discharged for 1 year or more, and also Apple recommends that you charge the iPod at least once a month, to prevent a discharged battery leakage, which may corrrode the circuitry in the iPod.
Hopefully you don't get the dreaded RED X on the iPod screen.
Good Luck!

• Auto-start OC4J process after Linux reboot

Oracle 11gR2, OC4J 10g (10.1.3.5.0), RHEL5 64 bit
Hi All,
I am trying to figure out how to get my oc4j process start at boot time. I already have a dbora script setup. I tried adding the following line to my dbora/dbstart script but it did not do anything:
#!/bin/sh
# chkconfig: 345 99 10
description: Oracle auto start-stop script.
ORACLE_OC4J_HOME=/u02/oc4j
JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_21/
su - $ORACLE_OWNER -c "$ORACLE_OC4J_HOME/bin/oc4j -start"
I read somewhere that I may need to put the entire path like:
/usr/bin/java -jar /path/to/oc4j.jar &
Just not sure where and how to put that path in the file.
Thanks for your help all.

Hi,
To run oc4j in the background, on Linux
Execute the following command:
nohup ./oc4j -start &
to run oc4j in the background. The 'nohup' command ignores the hangup signal (closing the terminal window) and enables oc4j to continue running in the background.
In rare cases, oc4j will not shutdown cleanly with the standard command:
./oc4j -shutdown -port 23791 -oc4jadmin <admin_pwd>
In those cases, try the following command:
java -jar admin_client.jar deployer:oc4j:localhost oc4jadmin <admin_pwd> -shutdown
to stop the oc4j service.
Thanks,

• Cannot start OC4J instance - after java.lang.OutOfMemory errors

Hi, I have successfully deployed an application (using Oracle Web Services, J2EE - EJB, TopLink ) to a new OC4J instance that we created. We use the OEM web site to manage the start/stop and deploy operations.
Then we tried to run simultaneously 10 clients....against the server app... ran ok for a while and after approx. 5 to 10 min... java.lang.OutOfMemory errors were being thrown at the client.

Im not sure if this is due to a memory leak or something in my app ? Or does Oracle IAS / Toplink have any such issues for which any possible patches are available ?
Could anyone please direct me in the possible right direction !
Thanks,
Krishna

Hi,
We have had this problem too, it only started after we deployed to production and got some load on our application server. We are using JRun as our application server.
We found that Macromedia (JRun) already addressed the issue in general - that if you get java.lang.OutOfMemory errors, then you need to increase the heap size.
Previously we had been using our own caching mechanism and never ran into this problem. Since we decided to go with TopLink (which has caching) we no longer use our own caching mechanism... but now we have this problem.
We have chosen to use FullIdentityMap for caching, but didn't think we would run out of memory in the JVM. Is there a suggested or minimum JVM memory requirement to run TopLink?
Thanks,
Aaron

• Address already in use for oc4j-instance: unable to run a form

Hi,
I've an error starting the oc4j-instance of forms.
it says: address already in use JVM-bind.
i changed the port number to 8888 (it was 8889) in the devsuit/config/default-web-site.xml.
running for the first time a form JInitiator was installed, applictaion server installation succesfull, but i see only a grey screen (in stead of my form).
i changed the prot number to 8889 again.
how to solve?
by the way, how to combine all oc4j instances into one?
(I have one for forms, one for reports, one for mapviewer and one for BIPublisher)
Leo

Thank you so much for your help.
It works when I remove the http://%%20" from address in Internet Explorer. But it doesn't work in preference->runtime. No matter what address I typed, FormBuilder added http://%%20" in front of the address automatically. I don't know what else I need to change to avoid this problem.
Thank you.

I wonder how i can solve this one .

I think you are trying to run the form with out saving. so when it run it creat the fmx file on u r desk top temporarly that include the space. so pls make a directory on u r hard disk that should not inlclude any space and then try agian to run again. will solve the prob.

• Auto Start five instances in one server

Guru´s
I have a server with five instances. When I restart the server randomly I have problems with some instances. (they do not rise).
In services (windows) I see all the services fine. But in EM I see that instance is down...
Is there a problem in windows when I have 5 instances ?? (in order to after a restart of the server some instances does not start)??

> Is there a problem in windows when I have 5 instances ??
Yes. Absolutely. It does not make any technical sense.
You now have to spend memory on 5 SGAs, and resources on 5 process monitors, 5 system monitors, database writers, log writers and so on.
Not to mention that you need 5 temp tablespaces, 5 sets of redo logs, undo spaces, etc.
Why? What does make 5 small SGA's better than a single large SGA? Or temp space? Or process monitor?
Do you think you scale that way? Oracle scales the exact opposite way. Instead of more physical databases (each needing an instance), Oracle's top end product called RAC scales by using a single physical database and adding more instances to that database - one instance per server.
Granted, there are exceptions where one may want to run multiple instances. Oracle 9i and 10g during a porting project. Forced to do so by using shrink wrap software that uses an "embedded" Oracle database.
But these are by far the exception of the rule. And unless you have a mother of server with virtualisation, what you are doing using Oracle, does not make any technical sense.
