Auto switch between two networks in one location

I have two wireless basestations in my home. They run on 802.11g, but have different network names and passwords. If I have the names and passwords stored in Keychain, is there anyway to have the computer automatically switch between the networks with the best signal?
Also, is there a utility that can automatically switch between connection methods based on which one has the fastest speed (i.e. an ethernet and wifi card, maybe one is faster than the other sometimes)?

I never realized that. Why is that?
A base station acting as a relay or remote must handle the traffic wirelessly 2 times.
The relay (or remote) base station must listen for the data from the main base station.
The relay (or remote) base station must then transmit the data to the client.
This means that wireless network can only handle half the data.
Every time you add a WDS relay or remote the available bandwidth gets cut again.
Do you think you're approach is always better?
Connecting them via Ethernet will result in the full wireless bandwidth being available.

Hi,
I have a MacMini and a MacBook Air, both with Thunderbolt Display ports but I have one monitor. I'd like to switch between the two without having to unplug and plug the monitor back in every time. Any recommendations for some sort of switch or Thunderbolt hub would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a method or app to quickly switch between staff networks in the same building?

We have a pretty standard network at my job, we have 5 staff networks, Staff A, Staff B, etc. Obviously some networks work better in different parts of the building, but I find that my macbook air tends to hold onto a weaker network and I have click on the wifi icon in the menu bar, wait for it to look for networks then click on the appropiate network. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a method or an app that makes it a little quicker for me to switch between these network. Maybe something similar to having network locations set. Thanks in advance.

You might almost achieve your goal simply by requiring password on wake from sleep. the password prompt will have an option there to switch users.
If you truly want to make it automatic,
it's possible but a bit tricky.
first download and install [Apple fast user switching applet|http://www.apple.com/applescript/accountswitcher/index.html]. install it on account of user 2 and set it up to switch to user 1 when you run it. call it, say, userswitcher.app and save it for example in user2 documents folder.
next, copy and paste the following into text editor. format it as plain text and save it as userswitcher.sh in Documents folder as well.

in the above wt is the wait time before switching and it's currently set to 3600 seconds (1 hour). adjust that as needed.
next make the script unix executable by running the following terminal command
chmod 755 ~/Documents/userswitcher.sh
Finally, download and install [Lingon|http://tuppis.com/lingon> and make a launch daemon to run the above script every minute.

Use the web api reset_data_provider as links or in select option in HTML.
   Onchange event of this select option should call JAVASCRIPT method and
   this in turn resets the current dataprovider to your concerned one.

How do I quickly* switch between two Skype account...

I have a need to be able to quickly* switch between two Skype accounts on my Windows 7 desktop computer.
Both accounts have high-security difficult-to-remember and hard-to-type passwords.
Many products have a facility for doing this, remembering recent account/password combinations, or having linked accounts.
Does Skype have a way of doing this?
And if it doesn't, how do I request it get one be developed?
I use a password manager, LastPass, but of course Skype isn't a browser so it doesn't work with Lastpass.

This can be done by setting up an another Skype client in a separate directory and with a shortcut containing the extra /datapath, /removable and /secondary switches.

For your purpose you can make use of a copy of Skype.exe of the already installed Skype application.

Yosemite 10.10.1 - DNS cache does not clear when switching between WiFi networks

Before updating to Yosemite, DNS caches would clear when switching between WiFi networks, as they should.
For Example, when using an Exchange server, your server name might be something like mail.company.com. Outside of the corporate LAN the IP would resolve to the outside (WAN) address. When you move the laptop inside the corporate LAN, it should clear the cache so mail.company.com resolves to the internal (LAN) address. This is just one example of a dumb DNS transition not taking place switching from outside to inside (and vice versa).
Instead, OS X is holding onto the outside DNS record even when moving to the Corporate LAN. The only way to fix is to run the DNS cache command (which is MUCH more convoluted in Yosemite now), or more easily, to quickly turn off then turn on WiFi.
This is an irritation as I have to perform this action every morning, and every time I come back to my desk from offsite.

Well, clearing the caches is as simple as this, no?

One other thing: Have you tried 10.10.2? There are many many fixes in 10.10.2 over 10.10.1.

White box appears while switching between two desktops

Since few weeks I have a problem when I switch between two Desktops. Everytime I switch between them a white box appears in the left corner of my screen (see screenshot).

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Switching between two languages

Is there any easy way to switch between two languages - Pingyin and English. At the moment, I have to go to settings and change the language and then go to Keyboards and delete Pingyin.

My MBP keeps having to switch between two WiFi networks

Our current WiFi network set-up at home is one Cisco router provided by our ISP (WiFi network: GIORGETTI), connected to another Linksys router (WiFi network: GIORGETTI II) which allows us to use the WiFi upstairs. The signal from both networks reaches my Macbook, but I'm finding that I'm constantly having to swap connections between the two because at some point it the internet connection on my Macbook seems to freeze, websites stop loading or working and I'm forced to connect to whichever of the two networks I'm not currently connected to to access the internet again. I don't know if I'm overloading the internet or something, cause it seems to just happen at random as I browse. I have to do this several times every hour and it's getting really irritating. I've tried restarting the routers and forgetting the networks and re-joining but still the same thing. The internet seems to work fine on my iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2. Any thoughts?

there would be a seamless use of either one across all of the devices in use.

With Apple AirPort base stations, you can set them up a special way to extend
a network, if they are using the same setting. - With your other brand, it may be
the fact is their ranges do not overlap well for use with your MacBook Pro. Are
you certain the iPhone and iPad products are using the same wi-fi as the MB/P
or are they able to access by cellular network instead of the wi-fi base stations?
In the past, my wi-fi base station in use was one with an external antenna port
so I was able to obtain an antenna so as to add range to the main base station.
This worked well, so long as I avoided placing wi-fi device by metal walls, or
concrete, or near other devices that generate interrupting similar signals. A fair
way to extend a network is by Ethernet between wi-fi base stations.
There is a possibility of having over-extended or over loaded the wi-fi capacity
of your local internet connection, in some instances. Note this is mentioned in
the above linked article in the section where the topic covers using a single or
more than one base station in a local wireless network.
You may be able to check the MacBook/Pro settings to see if you can allow it to
see and use more than one wi-fi source of your choosing, not 'any' but just those
in your Location for more seamless use. Or re-design the wireless network for
better use in the location the problem currently exists.

Anyway, there are some workable answers in the above Support site pages and
to discover the best way given your circumstances, and particular settings, may
take some time. You may have to work around a few blind-spots where signals
get dropped or are weaker due to construction of the building or layout of content.

IPhone sync contact book location auto switching between users

On a PC. Using iTunes 7.4.1. One user account on computer, two users sharing, each with own iPhone. I sync my contacts with windows address book. other user with yahoo account. groovy. But, when I log out and the other user plugs in, iTunes has decided to auto-switch settings so new user syncs via windows address book instead of yahoo settings. Second user's music playlist sync stays intact, as does their custom photo folder. It just seems to think we should share our contacts.
Very communist in basic philosophy, if you ask me. Has anyone ever heard of this sloppy glitch and if there is some duct tape fix for it? Already ruining my iPhone experience.

Who's threadjacking? I was just trying to relate that there are other issues with the current setup, and that it sounds like this is not an ActiveSync issue. How is ActiveSync even involved in the OP statement? He's on direct Exchange Server connection.... It sounds like the OP didn't have an issue before going to 5.x, and now does, and he isn't the only one. You people on this forum are getting mean and knowitally....I haven't been on here much in quite a while, and I come back to look around and try and help because of the recent issues I've seen, and you all talk down your noses at me.....Not very professional if you ask me...OP, if local syncing through iTunes is a good workaround for you, I'd do that, but I would also go to the apple feedback page and submit something on this issue. I submitted one for my issue all ready....Threadjacking....ha. You folks need to take a chill pill and play nice... We're all here to help each other out....That's all I was trying to do. Perhaps I can get a bit wordy sometimes...but really..

Switching between office network & home adsl modem

Small problem. Is it possible for my iBook to automatically detect whether I'm connected to either my office network or my home USB adsl modem? At present, I have to manually go into System Preferences/Network and switch from one to the other and then perform a re-start. Obviously a real pain! There must be an easier way.

I don't think that the iBook will able to switch automatically between the two networks depending on where you are. The easiest solution, in my opinion, is to set up two locations in your network preferences, one for home and one for office. Once the two locations are set up then all you need to do to switch between them is to go to the apple menu in the finder and you should see a 'Location' submenu where you can select either the home or office setups without having to go into system preferences. Hope this helps.

Need Help - Palm Pre Switching between EVDO & 1X from same location

I recently bought Pre and it seems everything is fine on phone except most critical thing, the Wireless Radio. My Pre switches between EVDO and 1X without any reason. My other phone is HTC Touch Pro2 and HTC Touch Pro and neither of those phones switch out of EVDO while I'm online. It seems PRe is doing this without any notification. To run a test I've done this test of visiting same website at same time from same location and my HTC Touch Pro and HTC Touch Pro 2 will hold EVDO without any issue but Pre will keep juggling between EVDO and 1X. Anyone else experienced this on their Pre ?
I've already applied latest firmware to Pre as well as I checked PRL and I'm on same PRL as my Touch Pro 2 but for some reason Pre is the one which has issues trying to remain in EVDO.
I took it to local Sprint store and the storyline after 1 hour of waiting was that phone is working as per design and all radio signals are fine. But because phone size is small it doesnot have as powerful radio as HTC Touch Pro 2, what a piece of BS. HTC Touch Pro is same size or even smaller in certain dimensions than Pre and still it has no issues with EVDO. Probably I'll wait for a week to see if anything changes before sending this one back.
Also one more thing I noted was when I started phone, out of box it was super fast. I was really happy to see the speed of phone but when I updated firmware 1.3.5.1 it seems after that phone takes second or two to respond from the time you tap on it. Which is bit surprising considering that phone is brand new and it got latest firmware update.

My Pre has never gotten stuck in 1XRTT data mode. Eventually, it goes back to EVDO. There's just no way to know when it will happen in either direction. Though, I have noticed that when the connection is previously inactive, and then I need to use it for something, it will often make the switch between the two network types/speeds at the time that it needs to go from dormant to active state. When the switch happens upon going from dormant to active, my Pre will also very often say that it cannot establish a connection to whatever I'm trying to get to, whether it be a web site in a browser or a "client" application of a web site. Most of the time, I will have to hit the appropriate refresh or retry button in the app.
In the Phone preferences, I updated its network settings and PRL just yesterday. Then I completely shut down my Pre to a powered off state via the standard power button menu shut down option. Upon power up and watching it for a while, my Pre still switches back and forth between 1XRTT and EVDO data connections at random for no reason. This happens even while sitting still on its Touchstone on my desk at work.
I agree that the Pre radio might not be up to par, but there is also another possibility - the software. Do we know how the 1XRTT and EVDO connections are driven by software on the Pre? Perhaps the software driving the data connection behind the scenes has issues?

Itunes unresponsive when switching between two devices

For God Sake help me with this,
i have so many apps on my iTunes(mac) ,since i updated my itunes from 11 to 12 it has been my worst nightmare ever..
whenever i attach two or more devices ,switching between devices it becomes unresponsive so that i have to force quit iTunes

Fading between two pages & controlling one MC from another.

Let me see if I can explain this properly. I usually use a motion tween and the alpha channel to fade movie clips in or out. What I am currently trying to do is fade one page out and another in, but it could be one of several MCs. I basically have four "pages" for a website including services, portfolio, about, and contact. I have icons on my navigation bar (which is going to be imported into my XHTML seperately so it can float them according to the users window size). The icons need to navigate between the pages and the pages need to fade in and out (eg. fade in the Services MC when the user clicks on the services icon, and fade out of it and into the Portfolio MC when the user clicks on the portfolio icon). Please keep in mind that the icons and pages are in completely different .fla/.swf files because I couldn't figure out how to float them in Flash after several hours of looking around online, but know I can easily do it using div tags + CSS in XHTML.
If someone could quickly explain how to "gotoandplay" a label in a different .swf file (communicate between the .swf NavBar and my main .swf) as well as fade out of the current MC (whichever page the user is currently on) before fading into new page (according to the icon the user clicks on), I'm sure I could 'fill in the blanks' from the rest of the AS3 and Flash I already know. The page also needs to fade out of whatever page it's currently on when the user clicks on the hide button (located on the page in the main .swf file). There is also several subpages on each page (which shouldn't be a big deal if I can figure the rest of this out).
I'm going to be using this same concept for nearly all of the websites I design & develop in the future and really need to know how to do this for the current site I'm working on. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions on how to accomplish these two things.
P.S. Please keep in mind I'm not an advanced user in AS3, but am very computer savy, and have done my share of programming in the past. I looked around for hours online to try and complete this without using the forum, but have come up with links to dead tutorials and short answers left and right. I'm hoping I won't come across the same here.
From what I've read so far I believe I can use tweening in ActionScript instead of a motion tween on the timeline to fade in and out of clips and believe that's the method to use to accomplish what I'm trying to do. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

I'm not looking for a "tutorial created especially for me".... Just perhaps someone that can copy and paste some code from a similar project that they have done so I understand how to do it.
You could have simply put here's a tutorial for how to use TweenLite to crossfade between four pages, and here's one that will let you pass information between two .swf files. If you recently watched the tutorials then it wouldn't take long to find them (maybe you have them bookmarked) and post a couple links.
Anyways, I just found an excellent tutorial on how to crossfade using TweenLite (found here) and an article that explains how to pass information from one .swf to another (here). It took some searching and knowing exactly what I was looking for to find them, but that's a much better answer for someone looking to do those two things than I've found here (or elsewhere for that matter).

How best to share Numbers spreadsheet usage between two networked Macs?

I have never really shared files between two users as my wife always had a Windows computer. She recently purchased an iMac and now has Numbers, so we are interested in sharing access to a couple of spreadsheets for household management. I have racked my brain trying to figure out how to share a file like this, expecting to show her how easy it is on a Mac, but so far I am making it look as difficult to figure out as it was for her on a windows network. Needless to say she is not very impressed with me or with file sharing on a Mac!
I have a iWork numbers spreadsheet I wantto share between myself on my iMac and my wife on her iMac on our local/home network. I tried keeping the file in my Public Folder but that apparently is not designed to allow my wife to make changes to and re-save back to the same location in my public folder.
So how else can I set this up to allow both my wife and I to acess (at different times, not simultaneously) the file, make changes, and save it back to the same location? I have a family MobileMe account as well as the local networked iMacs, if that is a possible solution.
I have heard some people talk about the 3rd party tool called DropBox, but I would like to keep to a local/Apple solution if this is possible with Apple hardware/software.

For sharing the file it seems there are two preferred methods:
1. create a file sharing local user account to host the share documents entirely on a local network. Pros: not routed through the internet. Cons: requires entering a user name and password for access. *(Can Keychain remember the shared account login credentials and enter this for you automatically to make this process even easier?)*
2. Use a dropbox account. Pros: no need to enter login credentials each time. Cons: requires internet access to upload and distribute changes.
Any other issues to consider between the two options?
