Auto sync locks iTunes

Strange problem has started to occur since the latest upgrade to iTunes 8.1.1.10. Normally when I place my iPhone in the dock without iTunes having started brings up the the iTunes application and then automaticaly syncs. Exectly what I expect. Since the upgrade iTunes starts and then locks up so that I have to kill the application. If I start iTunes first before I place my iPhone in the dock th sync goes ahead fine with no problems. I have reinstalled iTunes and reset my iPhone but no luck. Any ideas?

This article provides some general suggestions when trying to troubleshoot an issue where iTunes for Windows won't open or unexpectedly quits....

  • Auto-sync with iTunes

Why would my iPhone stop wireless auto-syncing with iTunes when plugged into its charger?  It did auto-sync for a while, but does not any longer.  Manual wireless syncing is fine.

    Try a search.

  • Insufficient capacity on 3rd generation Nano to allow auto syncing from iTunes

I have an iPod 3rd generation that has been restored.  I have 7.3GB space available.  Will not sync from iTunes because not enough space is available on iPod.  iTunes has 21.0 Gb total amt of music only stored.  At this time there is no music on iPod.  I anticipate 2 solutions neither of which I have tried; (1) manually drag each song from iTunes to iPod, or (2) deselect songs to be synced until I reach a total of 7.3 Gb.  Is there anyother solution?

    Hello marion60
You can do one of two things to get those purchased songs to your new iTunes library. The first is to navigate to the iTunes Store on your MacBook and then click on Purchased in the Quick Links section. Once there you will have a list of all purchased items that were made with that account and can download those tracks again. The second things you can do is plug in your iPod nano and then go to the drop down menu File > Devices > Transfer Purchases.

  • Is there a way to separate podcasts that I'll go to the iPad and others that'll go to the iPhone and be able to auto sync with iTunes?

So far the only way I'm able to pull that off is having the "sync podcast" on the iPhone and iPad turn off, otherwise everything on iTunes goes into both devices and is a real pain in the...

That's actually what I'm currently doing... but the problem is that by doing so I have to manually delete the podcasts I already heard on my iPhone on iTunes again... because the "sync podcasts" option on the iPhone and iPad is off, if I turn that on... all podcasts go in all my devices, and I like to keep podcasts for iPad and iPhone separate.

  • Auto Sync in iTunes for iPhone 3G

I have an iPhone 3G. Under summary > options, "automatically sync when this iPhone is connected" is grayed out so I can't select it. Can anybody tell me why?

You have to have contacts and calendar apps set up on your computer. The 3G and then the iPad will sync to those apps.

  • Stop podcast auto sync between iTunes

    Hi There,
I have an itunes account on an old windows machine attached to my NAS, that holds all my music and film - sharing it with my apple tv, my wifes itunes account etc. with home sharing. On my macbook I use the same apple id to have a portalble version on the library with me - downloading just what to watch or listen to when on the road - the only difference is podcasts - my wife hate it - I love it - so i'm downloading alot of this on my macbook - but all of a sudden they start filling up the NAS with all my Podcast content as well - which was not in the master plan.. any settings that can prevent me from having the same profile on two different itunes machines with the same apple id?

Hold the Shift key and launch iTunes.
Select *Choose library* and select the _iTunes library.itl_ file in the \iTunes\ folder you want to use.
You can then delete the other \iTunes\ folder.

  • Sync'd iPhone 5 two days ago, all fine.  Plugged in y-day to charge and phone attempted to auto sync...iTunes now says unable to sync bc I need an extra 27GB of storage to copy iTunes Library.  I have not made any changes to my settings.  Any ideas?

I sync'd iPhone 5 two days ago w/o any issued or problems.  Connected phone to iMac for a charge yesterday and iTunes stated an auto sync.  iTunes popup box appeared stating phone could not be sync'd b/c I needed an additional 27GB of storage, apparently to load iTunes Library.  I did not change or modify any settings.  Has anyone experienced this or know how to solve this syncing issue.
Side note: iTunes does recognize that my phone is plugged in, charging.   Thank you.

One additional finding this morning ... iTunes can't handle my iPad being connected.  Immediately upon recognizing the iPad, iTunes comes up with the same message as happens with the iPod indicating "iTunes has stopped working," forcing an immediate shut down of the program.  Opposite the case with my iPod, iTunes at least recognizes my iPad.
    No idea.  This is madening.

  • Trouble syncing with iTunes!!!

    Hi--
I recently got a 2.0 USB hub (b/c my older computer has a 1.0 port)in order to sync my iPhone, but am having trouble. I even plugged the mouse and keyboard into the hub as well, AND disabled the auto-sync in iTunes.
So this is what happens: I dock my iPhone, it tries to open up iPhoto and iTunes--iPhoto pops up immediately, but iTunes takes forever. (BTW, my iPhone does not say "syncing") When iTunes does finally appear, it doesn't recognize my iPhone. Can anyone help???

so you're basically saying that the 2.0 hub isn't in fact "upgrading" my 1.0 port on my computer? so... i just need a new computer? yikes.

  • Podcasts and Songs missing when Auto Sync'd

    I have two HUGE problems...
When I auto sync. Itunes deletes EVERYTHING off of my ipod and starts anew. This happens even after a successful auto sync.... If it was 5 or 10GB not that big of a deal but I'm looking at 35GB.. Which is A REALLY REALLY LONG TIME TO SYNC even with Firewire...
Podcasts don't show up as podcasts.... They show up under the genre of podcast BUT not under the Podcast menu. There was mention that podcasts that are NOT from iTMS won't appear in this list. BUT they are subscribed that way...
Now I've reset, restored, reinstalled, EVERYTHING (outside of an OS restore)
Now the strange thing is that this problem does NOT exist when I manually manage the songs on my ipod...
This is my 3rd iPod 4G the others have all died (one within 2 weeks)... I'm getting into a Love HATE relationship with iTunes and the iPod.

Okay, that is the latest iOS. As far as shortcuts are concerned, they should be available. Go to Settings, General, Keyboard, Shortcuts. You should find the settings and area to enter new ones there. The area to set what numbers to receive calls from in DND mode are in Settings, Notifications, Do Not Disturb, and then then Allow Calls From.
    Does this help?

  • Wi-Fi auto sync feature not working anymore since iOS 7...

I have noticed that the Auto Sync with iTunes feature does not work since I installed iOS 7 on my iPhone 4S. Wi-Fi is ON, the iPhone is on the docking for charging and nothing happens. Did I missed something ??? Am I the only one with this problem ?
    Thanks !

I got it finally !!! You have to have both these options checked :
Work like a charm after this

  • Need to disable auto sync

When I originally got itunes, I had it set to automatically sync when I connected my ipod. Now that I have an iphone, I do not want it to auto sync, but I can't find how to change that setting. How can I disable the auto sync in itunes for Windows (Vista)? Thanks.

Look under Edit --> Preferences and then look up at the top of that window - there are a number of choices (General, Playback, Sharing, etc.) - click on Devices and then look down about halfway down the page - there is a place you can click to "prevent ipods, iphones ipads from syncing automatically" - hope that works for you.

  • Auto-sync??

i've got music on itunes 7.0.2 on a different pc to the one i usally use and am trying to get them onto my ipod. But whenever i plug my ipod into my usb it tries to auto-sync and when i does i cant click on anything else to make it stop or to change my setting like it says on the help thing. if i let it auto-sync will i lose all the music i already have on my ipod? Or is there a way to change my settings so i can manually put stuff on?

You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button:

  • How do you disable iPod Auto Update with iTunes?

How do you disable iPod Auto Update with iTunes? I know there is a key press combo that will do it but I forget which keys. Anyone?

Keep iTunes from automatically updating your iPod
    Another Easier Alternative:
While connecting the iPod to the computer, hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys in Windows (CMD + Option keys on a Mac). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes. The iPod will then appear in the iTunes source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto-sync and then you can release the keys. This action may take between 3 and 25 seconds depending on your computer.
You can then ‘right-click‘ on the iPod icon in iTunes’ source column and select iPod Options, then check the box that says “Manually manage songs and playlists”. You can now manage your library without losing any songs on the iPod.
Note: If connecting to a different computer than the ‘iPod’s Home Computer’, iTunes will ask you if you want to update your iPod and give you an opportunity to opt out. This will not happen if you connect to the ‘Home’ computer – iTunes will auto-sync without warning!. Best to know the difference.

  • Manually copying / Auto-sync.

    Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to double-check on something. I want to manually copy music from iTunes to the iPod. I found the directions on how to do that, but I'm concerned about one thing. The directions start by telling me to connect the iPod to the laptop first. When I do this, won't it automatically begin to synchronize and delete stuff off the iPod first? Or will it prompt me before it does anything? Just trying to be extra-cautious. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

The directions assume that you are going to change to manual before making any changes to your iTunes or before connecting to a different computer. If you have deleted anything in the meantime and you have your iPod set to auto it will erase what you took off. If you are connecting to your own computer it will not give you a prompt as it recognises this as the home library.
However you can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Edit> Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box.
If you are changing to manual because you want to connect to a different computer it's a different story. If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting to a different computer and iTunes. If it is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all existing songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it: Using iPod with Multiple computers

  • Auto sync wont work on Vista

When I connect my iPod and auto sync it, iTunes freezes and I have to manually disconnect iPod from under My Computer. How do I fix this?

    Hi tater salad,
    Sorry for the delay.
Be aware that iTunes is still not fully compatible with Windows Vista, and might still have problems with it. (we can do some troubleshooting, though).
Let's try a full reinstall of iTunes and QuickTime.
Disconnect your iPod from your computer.
Go to "Add or Remove programs" in Control Panel. Find "iTunes" and "QuickTime" on this list, and remove them both.
Then, download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, to clear out the remaining iTunes and QuickTime installation files off your computer (see this MS document):
Description of the Window Installer CleanUp Utility
After you've done that, restart your computer.
Then, go to this page to install the iTunes + QuickTime installation pack onto your computer again:
    Download iTunes - 7.1.1.5
Now, restart your computer once more.
After the computer has fully loaded up, open iTunes, and connect your iPod to your computer.
Try automatically syncing it with iTunes again, and see if it works or not.
