AUTO Tone vs. White Balance

The AUTO button seems a bit too "insensitive" to changes of white-balance "tint". What I mean is that manual changes of tint need to change by a certain number before the AUTO Tone button becomes available again. There seem to be brackets of tint value (like -13 to +29 using the same AUTO Tone setting).
What I noticed is that sometimes this may not be exact, for example changing between AUTO WB and Custom WB may not follow the same bracket and thus lead to slightly different AUTO Exposure results (0.05 difference only, though).
On its own the Auto WB seems to be quite useful for us beginner by the way. I just used it on some old Samsung pocket-cam JPG that was seriously into the blue and liked the outcome.

  • IPhoto auto-enhance and white balance

    Good morning everyone,
i am askin' your help to understand if what i have noticed is a bug or not..
What i am experiencing is some kind of weird behaviour about the enhance function of iPhoto 9.3.2 working over D7000 NEF (RAW) files.
When using that routine, whatever picture i use, it gets automatically overboosted in a very warm white balance and a green tint,
obviously not what i was expecting to obtain..
The weird thing is that this behaviour happens only with the pictures i have imported today, while preceeding (29/07/2012) ones work like a charm..
Just in case you ask it, no i don't have update any firmware meanwhile
Is there any hint/tips/tricks you would suggest me?
    Thanks in advance
    EC

    enrico,
I'm noticing something similar with my Canon RAW files... When I do a cut/paste adjustment, the pic that gets the pasted adjustment gets a decidedly greenish tint.  Experimentation shows that the tint shifts +22 units.  Intersting, in that the shift does not show up on the tint slider, but shows up on the histogram...
I didn't notice any problem like this until yesterday, and after reading your post, wonder if any software updates performed within the past week shifted something?
Haven't had anyone else indicate they had a similar problem on this board...
I submitted a bug report to Apple.

  • How to batch process auto white balance

I have 500 RAW photos taken in different lighting situations. How do I batch process these photos so that each photo is individually auto adjusted for white balance. I also have the same question for EXPOSURE.

If you're using Aperture 3.3 or later, you can use "Auto Enhance" to do this, which will attempt to automatically set the white balance, exposure (a mild tweaks), put a curve on the photos, etc.  In general, I find it provides a pretty good starting point.
You can do it as an import preset.  OR, you can select all the photos you want to edit, then choose Photos->Add Effect->Quick Fixes->Auto Enhance.
If you don't like it you can go through Photos again to remove all adjustments.
Auto enhance is pretty neat; it has 4 or 5 things it does.  You could define your own preset that did ONLY white balance and exposure if you wanted as an import preset.
Note you have to do it through the menu at top.  If you do it from effects on the left it will only apply to a single photo.

  • Elements 11 organizer shows correct wb in thumbnails but when increased to full screen or in slide show changes white balance to tungsten

Elements 11 organizer shows correct white balance in thumbnails but when increased to full screen or in slide show changes white balance to tungsten.  Photos where shot in raw and in auto or flash white balance.  any suggestions out there?

Figured it out, if the raw default setting has the wb on 3000 (or tungsten) the slide show uses adobe raw to convert so they all showed blue LOL

  • Rear camera pink spot / white balance issue

Pink spots are most apparent in auto and fluorecent white balance modes.
Not apparent in cloudy and daylight white balance modes.
Does anyone else have this issue?

    1. Lens is clean.
    2. Lens is not scratched.
    3. Nothing is blocking the lens. There is no LED flash on the tablet. Please do some research about a device before trying to give any advice.
    4. I have searched about the problem on Google, and found several topics about mobile devices from other brands, with the exact same issue. For some of those devices, the issue had been reduced or resolved with a software update:

  • Panorama photo - White balance

    Dear all,
I made a nice set of panorama photo's.
Each overlays the previous one by almost 50%
I set focus to Manual, froze the shutter time and forgot WB.
It was on auto, so all white balance diffres.
As they are jpg, not raw, I cannot correct the WB just like that.
Is there a way to set the WB correct, so the panorama matches?

For the future-- the only thing automatic anything on a camera is good for is quickly setting a balance or an exposure. Then flip it to manual. If you study your monitor on set, you'll find stuff you will want to tweak anyway-- lighting adjustments, dialing back half a stop, etc. I almost always shoot at least half a stop under, so I have a little more latitude during color correction.
The light meter is almost a lost art-- because everyone seems to think the camera IS a light meter. There are a bunch of hoops to jump through to understand a light meter viv a vis video exposure- but it is darned useful in lighting your set-- experimentation will tell you how you want your shadow areas to be exposed, how many stops difference do you want your subject and bg to have?

  • D3 + "Auto" White Balance in LR2 = +30 Magenta

I have been finding some problems with the "Auto" white balance setting in LR2...
Since I started shooting RAW with my D3 (while still shooting with my D70 in the same locations) LR2 likes to give me a +30 Magenta whenever I choose Auto no matter where or what I'm shooting.
I don't suffer the same adjustment shooting RAW on the D70 (interchanging the same lenses.)
Anybody else seeing this issue? I'm shooting Auto WB on the D3 almost all the time and I end up having to manually perform any WB tweaks in LR otherwise everything is too "pink."

While generally agreeing that a gray-card white-balance measurement is more accurate and eyedropping something that glows in UV light is a problem, in this particular case, if the dress does indeed look white to the eye, and the people that will be viewing and purchasing the pictures expect it to be white, then white-balancing on the dress can be ok.
In this particular instance the issue seems to be that there is mixed lighting between the sky and the trees so the particular part of the dress being eyedropped changes things, and the angle of the gray-card would make a difference, so the multiple angles of fabric in the dress may offer a wider range of "targets" where one is more accurate than the gray-card.
I wish LR would allow the Auto WB to be restricted to the cropped area of a photo, so you could crop it down to just the gray-card or in this case the front of the dress and have it guess more correctly.
The maximum area that can be sampled by the WB-dropper is too small and the area sampled for the Auto WB is too large for LR to be the most helpful in certain situations.
Being able to eyedropper a non-neutral area, such as the skin and compute the color-balance as compared to a library of skin tones, would also be very helpful.
Elements lets you color-balance a photo based on skin tones, and you can do this thing by hand in Photoshop Levels/Curves by referring to RGB values, but I wish LR would be helpful in this regard, as well.
I realize this is what the DNG Profile Converter and Colormunki are letting you do, but having to create a permanent profile and install it and use it are not the same as being able to create an image-specific profile and use it in place of WB across several images.
Why shouldn't I be able to have someone hold up a color-checker and have LR compute an image-specific color-balance based on that.
The other thing LR should allow is have an eyedropper help with determining the highlight and shadow tint hue/sat values.

  • Skin tone balance? (as opposed to white balance)

much like there's a way of automating white balance (through the eye-dropper or auto-WB), i wonder if there's a way of matching skin tones. is there some sort of "match hue" option where you can make someone's forehead be the same hue in every photo (without doing it manually)?
there's such an option in apple's final cut pro in the 3-way color corrector. it's a very handy and time-saving feature.
    thanks!

This is only half the answer. Have you seriously tried to edit large numbers of files with this method? It's an exercise in frustration.
I just started up Aperture to see how many Tabs it takes to go from White Balance to Exposure, 7 from memory as it highlights every sub-menu along the way. I say from Memory because it decides this time (a first) it's not going to move to the next field no matter how many times Tab is pressed. And when my workflow is Exposure, then White Balance, (don't get me started about bright sparks who tell you to do it the other way), then H&S, then Saturation, which is how many Tabs? Somewhere between 35 and 40. And you have to take your eyes of the screen to see where you are.
I've said this quite a few times in these forums, and yes, I have posted a number of times in the feedback, that the best implementation of this is Capture 1 where (on PC) Control +/- controls exposure, Shift +/- White Balance etc. And it works perfectly on a network, unlike Bridge which just keeps crashing.
As someone who edits anywhere between 1100 and 2000 CR2 files a week there is no way I could use Aperture in our Companies workflow. I use it for my personal work where time and volume are not crucial considerations but file management is.
Even though Capture 1 is long in the tooth, ie no H&S, no Recovery yadda, yadda, yadda, to my knowledge no other Professional level RAW processor has this direct entry of important adjustment values and once used any other method is just tedious.
While I love most of the other features, in my opinion, the Tab method of moving between adjustments as implemented in Aperture is half baked and very buggy.
    End of rant.
    Cheers,
    Terry

  • Lightroom seems to auto white balance on RAW files

Hi, I started using Canon RAW files and noted that in Lightroom, it will render a preview and change the original photo colour etc. Is this normal and how to I switch this auto rendering off?
For JPG, it doesn't seems to do that...
    Thanks!

When you import, one of the options is "Develop Settings" (the Import Photos dialogue box, below the list of pictures it's going to import, in an area labelled "Information to Apply"). Unless you have something other than "None", then I don't think it alters the WB, though I could be wrong. Of course, if you apply a Develop Setting then all bets are off - the preset could do anything.
As for Auto Tone, go to Edit menu, Preferences, Presets tab, and check (or not, as you prefer) the Apply auto tone adjustments option. But that shouldn't alter white balance or colour.

  • Lightroom: Why does auto white balance no longer work after changing the camera calibration profile?

I'm using NEF raw files from Nikon.
Lets say for example I import a NEF file into Lightroom (v4) and click on 'auto' for white balance. The white balance in the image is  adjusted correctly (somewhat). However, if I then change the camera profile (in the camera calibration section) from 'adobe standard' to 'camera standard' then the white balance in the image becomes very wrong. I then have to set the white balance back to 'as shot' and correct it manually instead.
Why would 'auto white balance' no longer work just because I change the profile from 'adobe standard' to 'camera standard'?
    Any ideas?

    Works as expected here...

  • Lightroom 2 - Auto white balance - crash

I'm having intermittent problems while applying auto white balance on some CR2 files in Lightroom 2 running on OS X 10.5.4. When choosing Auto from the list of white balance options, LR waits for a second or two, doesn't update the history panel and the spinning beachball appears. CPU rises to about 100% and there's no other way than to force quit.
So far it happens with, say, one in 50 images (I've been working on approximately 100 images and with 2 this happened).
When I restart I can easily recreate the problem by going through the same routine.
The workaround is working on another image and then going back to the problematic one; then I can apply AWB without any problems.
I can save a (lengthy) hang reporter log file.

Thought I was doing pretty good with LR2, but unfortunately this problem has showed up on my Mac OS X 10.5.4 system. The stalls (i.e., beachball) are when developing CR2 images from a Canon 5D. I experience many occurrences of the problem when going through this folder of RAWs, perhaps 20-30% of the images. Today I thought I had found one that always fails, but turns out not to be the case, although it causes a failure over half the time it is accessed. Same symptoms as described in the above posts: Convert an image's white balance to auto, in either quick-develop or develop. Then when you access the image you get the spinning beachball forever, and have to force-quit. I've also stalled LR with this sequence: in QD, convert WB to auto, switch to develop module, undo the WB change in history by clicking the prior step... LR stalls. Basically I've seen all the same steps as described here, and more.
Also, just for fun I tried everyone's favorite troubleshooting step, i.e., trashing preferences. It made absolutely no difference. The first time I simply clicked on the troublesome image, LR got stuck.
Jao... interestingly, I never saw this problem in the beta in spite of developing many, many images in the beta. If it was known and not fixed, that's quite a concern.

  • Image contains camera White Balance setting; LR 5.5 only shows "As Shot", "Auto", and "Custom"

I have a new, Panasonic DMC-GX7. I shot a bunch of photos as JPGs. When viewing their Exif data using Exiftool, I can clearly see the camera's White Balance setting, as well as the Color Temp Kelvin, WB Red Level, WB Green Level, and WB Blue Level. However, Lightroom 5.5 only shows "As Shot", "Auto", and "Custom" when I click White Balance under Quick Develop on the Library tab or WB under Basic on the Develop tab. Exiftool shows the Exif Version as 0230 and the Panasonic Exif Version as 0405. Is LR looking for the white balance information in some other field? Do I need to configure it somehow for my camera? I am new to LR (but not to image processing), so could use some help figuring this out.

The whole question is not so simple as converting to DNG. Yes DNG is openly documented, yes the file can be read, but that does not mean it can be correctly interpreted by other software in the future and the best you can then do is starting the PP of your images from scratch. Imagine a DNG with LR adjustments that in some years you open the file in another software, possibly non-Adobe. Even if the file can be read it will not look the same, as the Adobe specific developing instructions could not be strictly followed. Even if all software manufactures agreed on a common set of adjustments, let's say everybody had a Highlights slider and a Clarity slider and so on, which is unlikely, the results would still be different as the underlying algorithms would be different.
Disclaimer: I only shoot raw and firmly believe it is the best option, but one must be conscious it has some shortcomings related to the future of our images.

  • Aperature Metadata does not show custom white balance. It just shows auto wb when custom

I have Aperature 3 latest update.  I have noticed that the Metadata tab under White Balance does not indicate that i used a custom white balance.  It simply states "Auto White Balance".  Is this something Apple can correct?  Am i missing a way to indicate custom white balance?

Robert -- my in-camera WB setting shows correctly in the metadata (e.g.: Auto, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy Weather, etc.).  I use a Sony a850.
It sounds as though either your Nikon codes the WB in a proprietary field (every mfr. creates their own RAW file format), or Aperture is not properly reading the EXIF.  You could read the EXIF yourself to see whether Nikon puts the WB in the expected field.
Perhaps someone with Nikon experience can join in.  I'm sorry to report that I have none.
Fwiw, I always shoot RAW and AWB and make corrections are needed in Aperture.  Since I make only RAW captures and use an OVF, I have no use for the in-camera WB settings.

  • Colour cast using auto White Balance in ACR 7.4

I am experiencing a yellowish colour cast when I set the White Balance to Auto in Adobe Camera Raw. This happens with pictures taken with the Nikon D7100 and also the Nikon D50.
    Here is an example,

    White Balance set to "Auto":

So I would conclude the ACR auto wb process is apparently not as reliable as the camera determination, and certainly inferior to direct measurement on a neutral object.
Oh, Auto WB is reliable for what it was designed to do...take the image colors into consideration when determining the auto white balance. It's doing exactly what it's supposted to do...the fact that it's often not what you want shouldn't be a surprise. The way a camera determines WB is by using a WB sensor (either the sensor itself or an external sensor) which is much more accurate than measuring image colors after capture. I've seen Auto WB help in certain cases where there simply is not white neutral in which to measure but I've found manually adjusting WB the best solution in most cases.

  • Color correcting auto white balance footage

I shot some video yesterday and at the time of the shoot, I made sure to set my white balance, however after looking at the footage I notice the color temperature slightly shifts constantly. I don't know why this happened, but it's too late to investigate, my project is due in less than a week.
The good news is that I've realized that that there's a white object in the bg of the shot the entire time that is pure white so i could color correct by setting that as the white point in FCP. The only problem is that since it shifts every 3 seconds or so i would have to keyframe a LOT. Is there any plug-in or application that will let me track that white object in the background so it can set a custom white points for every frame?
    Running Final Cut Pro 6.0.2
PS: I found Avid has auto color correction -- basically what I'm looking for I guess. Unfortunately I don't have Avid.

there's no auto color correction feature directly in FCP
there are 3rd party plugs to allow you to track objects but i'm not aware of any way to link that to a color correction
