Auto Update Songs

I use passalong.com to download my files...they go to a folder on my desktop...after I download new songs they do not appear in my Itunes library. Is it possible to get Itunes to auto update my library each time I open it instead of manually adding the songs one at at time. Thanks.

In short no, iTUnes doesn't "Watch" folders and files like other players do. you could use "Add folder to Library" under file to add the whole contents of the folder to iTUnes

  • Go from manually update to auto-update without losing songs?

I was trying to delete some podcasts from my ipod, and was following the directions on the help menu which told me to go to preferences and choose manual update, then delete. I tried it, and it didn't work. When I decided to go back to auto update, I received a message that everything on my ipod would be deleted and the update would be just what is on the itunes on that machine. I have more than one computer, and have itunes on each one. There are different songs on each computer. If I go to manually update on this computer, it will erase the songs I've put on from other computers. All this and I still have the unwanted podcasts. Can anyone help me to go back to auto-update without losing songs? If worse comes to worst I guess I'll have to update, lose the songs, and then re-update at my other computers. thanks.

Afraid that's not possible. If you go to auto-update, the iPod gets cleared and replaced with the current contents of the iTunes library.

  • Auto Update only Checked Songs

Is there a way to limit my Auto Updating option to only the songs that have a check next to it, or do i have to crop these songs in a separate created playlist?

  • Layers of Smart Playlists don't auto update

I set up a smart playlist that only included songs not played in the past week (called 'unrecent'). This list dropped from about 200 songs to 150 songs last night after playing a lot of tunes.
I have another smart playlist that combines the above 'unrecent' list with my favourites (with about 20 songs). After docking the iPod however the combined list (called 'prime') still showed 220 songs in the list.
Only after editing the 'prime' smart playlist (without actually changing anything) did the playlist drop back down to about 170 songs.
Why wont this work automatically (with having to force it through by editing)? Please note, the basic smart playlist (unrecent) DID automatically update, just the other list that used it DIDN'T.

Are they both set to auto update?
I have not nested smart lists inside smart lists. It may be a quirk in the program.

  • Auto updates...is there another way??

I have a 40GB photo Ipod and so far I have only put songs on it. The computer I use to put stuff on my ipod is my mom's work computer and she doesn't like her itunes library getting more than about 200 songs in it. I share itunes on that computer with my mom and my brother so I chose manual update in order to avoid getting my brother and mom's songs on my ipod. Now in trying to put on my podcasts and photos I can't just drag and drop the way I have been with my playlists. How can I get photos and podcasts on without using auto update? If i change over at this point will all the songs I deleted from the library dissappear from my ipod?
any enlightnement you can provide is greatly accepted!
    thanks,

Problem solved... I LOVE tiger... if anyone else has my issue... just check prefs... lol I'm such a blonde!!

  • Music Library Auto Update

I want to transfer songs in my iTunes library from my computer to an external HD. My question is: If I have auto update in iTunes, will my songs on my iPod be erased if there are no files in the library?

Here's how to make the transfer correctly:
If you want to make another drive (direct or portable) on your PC the main music location for iTunes, move all song files there, as well as any future imported music from CDs, here is one method (see the links below):
You will maintain your playlists, ratings, comments, etc. This will only move your music folders location, NOT your iTunes program files. It is my opinion that programs (i.e. – iTunes) work better when installed on your main hard drive. At the very least, it makes it easier to manage all your programs if they are centrally located on one hard drive (the Windows default standard).
See these links for some step-by-step info:
iLounge: Moving your iTunes Library to a New Hard Drive
MacMuse: iTfW: Move iTunes music/Library to new drive
iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder
If you are moving the music to an external hard drive or network drive, after the transfer (and to work correctly), the drive must be running prior to your opening iTunes. If not, iTunes will reset the location of your music folder location to the default location (usually: ‘C:\...My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music’). If this happens, you need to manually change the path back to your external location, or future CD ‘Imports’ will be deposited on your internal HD.
Also make sure that the new drive always loads as the same Drive Letter, otherwise you will lose the references within iTunes.

  • Ipod Nano wont auto update anymore ? pls help

I have been using my Nano for a long time. Recently my daughter got the Ipod shuffle and I was trying to figure out how to make a seperate library for her, which i never figured out. Somehow in the course of trying to figure that problem out I managed to mess up my Ipod.
Now when i plug in my ipod it brings it up as a folder, no longer is it auto updating and adding new songs or anything. Please any help is appreciated.
Plus is it possible to have seperate library's for two or more Ipods on one computer ??

always says that it cannot download the latest version of quicktime beacause the original version of quicktime cannot be removed. Quicktime wont let uninstall or remove it in anyway so that I can update to itunes 7.0.
okay. let's try the following procedure with that.
Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. then use it to clear any existing QuickTime installation configuration information from your PC:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Next, we’ll manually remove leftover program files and folders.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.
    7. Restart your computer.
does an itunes install go through properly now?

  • Turning AUTO UPDATE OFF

I just bought an iPod shuffle 1gb and i'm having the following problem.
I have a huge mp3 collection divided into different cds. The thing is that everytime i send mp3s from a CD to the iPod and reconnect the pod (withouth having the CD in the CD-ROM tray) it automaticaly updates my iPod and erases the songs that were excluded from the ITunes LIBRARY.
How can I turn this auto-updating option off and manually send music files to my iPod without losing the previously sent ones ?? PLEASE !!

Plug in your iPod, go to edit - Preferences. Press the iPod tab, and select manual update.

  • Whats the difference on manual and auto update?

whats the difference? lets say i set on auto update. if i add a new song, video or picture, do i lose the old files from my ipod?

auto means your libary will automatically be your ipod. manual means you could chose songs to be on your ipod.also you could connect your ipod to a friends p/c and download a couple of there songs if you have the manual setting on.

  • Auto updates

ok. im new to the forum. i searched the topic. and was a little confused on the answers i found. so heres my deal.
i have itunes for windows xp. and a 5th gen ipod.
when the ipod is connected it says i have software version 1.2.1 and im pretty sure i have the latest version of itunes.
my problem is, that i usually used to use auto update with no problems.
but ive been takin my ipod to my friends and trying to use it thru his computer during partys. but it wouldnt work since i hade auto updates on.
so i tried turning it off. and have had trouble with my ipod syncing up with my i tunes library.
rite now its syining up, but says its only loading 4200 songs, and i have just over 6000 in my library. its done this several times.
    im wondering whats causing this....
i would like to be able to sync up to my itunes before i change it to manual updates so that when i plug into my friends comp. i can get some of his music.
and when i use auto updates. im pretty sure that every song is checked.
i hope my question is clear....
    any help?
    thanks

  • How can i turn off auto-update?

This auto update feature is driving me crazy. i recently downloaded songs from my cds onto my computer. I then put these songs onto my ipod shuffle and they all played fine. i do not want to keep all these songs on my computer, so i deleted them. but when i plugged my ipod back into my computer, it automatically deleted those songs b/c they were no longer on my computer. does anyone know how to turn this feature off (in itunes 5)? thanks!

    Natty,
You don't have to use the
    b Autofill
    feature with your
    i shuffle.
    See its FAQ :
Autofill actually requires some action. You can manually click on Autofill each time you insert iPod shuffle, or you can use the "Keep this iPod in the source list" option to click Autofill any time and then connect iPod shuffle.
This lets you manually select what songs you want to add to the
    i shuffle
    , but that does
    b not
allow you to add songs that aren't on your computer.
    The
    i shuffle
is the one member of the iPod family that doesn't give you the option to
i Manually manage songs and playlists.

  • Auto update location of missing files? (like old versions use to)

When a song came up missing previous versions, once you found the location old versions of itunes gave you the option of auto-updateing the other songs in that album that were also missing. it appears that 7.02 doesn't do that. Anyone know a way around this or the new way to auto update the new location? Syncing isn't doing it.

Thanks...perfect...works in both Win and Mac version.

  • "Update Songs on'my ipod'"

I chose "update songs on 'my ipod'" and it erased all the songs I had on my ipod and copied the limited amount of songs I had in my library on that computer. What gives? I am not happy about this. Is there any way to get them back on my ipod? there were songs on the ipod that I didn't have on my computer.
    What the ****?
    Thanks for your help,
    Jay

By selecting that option you automatically synced your iPod with your iTunes library.
The songs on your iPod will have been erased and replaced with the contents of the iTunes library you just synced with.
That's the way auto sync works. Unless you have a back up someplace, the songs on your iPod are gone.

  • Manual vs. auto update issues....

I had been using "manual update" when syncing my pod to iTunes. I have an external HD and, after adding music to iPod, would just move added music into the external's folder as well. My friend talked me into switching to "auto update"...said it was easier. Well, I tried it last night. Had to wait 4 hours for music to be recopied from HD to pod (why would ALL my music have to be updated? It's already on the iPod), then after that I unplugged pod from Mac to make sure music was updated. It was. Then I adjusted volume settings to music on HD and synched pod back to Mac. It updated.....and I had to wait another 4 hours for music (with new volume settings) to be updated back to my pod! Crap. I'm through with this auto update thing. Don't want to worry about having to wait 4 hours ever time I sync my pod to my computer. Any thoughts?

I have an external HD and, after adding music to iPod, would just move added music into the external's folder as well.
    I'm confused.
You add music to iTunes, sync the iPod and then move the music? Sounds like you are not wanting to fill your internal hard drive.
Why not simply change the location of the iTunes library to your external hard drive? Then you simply add the songs to iTunes and your done.
Read this -> iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder
Then I adjusted volume settings to music on HD and synched pod back to Mac.
When you change your music files, it will reload the changed music files back to the iPod.
When automatically syncing, it shouldn't reload everything everytime.
It will load new files added to iTunes since the last iPod update. It will reload any files that have been changed (as above.) It sync some of the info (last played, ratings, etc) but this should only take a few seconds.
Don't know why it's taking 4 hours either.
Try changing the library location and see how long it takes.

  • How do you disable iPod Auto Update with iTunes?

How do you disable iPod Auto Update with iTunes? I know there is a key press combo that will do it but I forget which keys. Anyone?
    Intel Piii   Windows XP Pro

Keep iTunes from automatically updating your iPod
    Another Easier Alternative:
While connecting the iPod to the computer, hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys in Windows (CMD + Option keys on a Mac). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes. The iPod will then appear in the iTunes source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto-sync and then you can release the keys. This action may take between 3 and 25 seconds depending on your computer.
You can then ‘right-click‘ on the iPod icon in iTunes’ source column and select iPod Options, then check the box that says “Manually manage songs and playlists”. You can now manage your library without losing any songs on the iPod.
Note: If connecting to a different computer than the ‘iPod’s Home Computer’, iTunes will ask you if you want to update your iPod and give you an opportunity to opt out. This will not happen if you connect to the ‘Home’ computer – iTunes will auto-sync without warning!. Best to know the difference.
