Auto use of Sg grades in AfterEffects

I've put in a feature request that Ae be brought completely into the fold with P-Pro & Speedgrade, in being able to display footage with the grades from Sg showing automatically as they now do in P-Pro.
I've been told that it is because Ae doesn't have the Lumetri Deep Color Engine (nice fancy name, that) ... yet ... if you save your grade as a look/lut in Sg, then open the project in Ae ... you CAN get Ae to display your grade if you go to Effects/Utilities/Apply Color Luts and then choose your saved grade. Bingo, it's there ... but you have to manually connect the dots. So weird.
I apply titles and such-not to already graded footage ... Ae is the last program I normally use befor rendering a final project. I learned this workflow from tutorials both by Adobe and others, and from the advice of a number of others around here, so I can't think my workflow would be all that strange and unusual.
It would just speed things along so much ... and save some juking and jiving to get to someplace I could get there so much faster IF the programs actually completed their inter-operability.

Thanks, folks, for helping me with this. While it seems silly to have to "pull" here to accomplish exactly what "pushing" can't do ... still, it does keep me working!
It's wonderful to have the User Base be so helpful here, as ... this is new enough NONE of the Adobe articles/tutorials includes the info on working through the programs yet except as "feature gas-passing" stuff. I even had a response in a thread from an Adobe tech expert that in his area he hadn't even been able to download the program yet so that he could check problems users were having with it ... and was pleased other users were being so helpful to each other.
Um ... an Adobe help/techspert couldn't have access to the program at least SOME time before it was launched publicly? Wow.

This code solves my problem but has thrown up a new issue:
When i select Option 1 or 2 from the dropdown list the change in the text field is instantaneous, however if I select Option 3 it wont appear in the text field until I either select Option 3 a second time or select another item. Its as if the text field is a selction behind what I have enterd in the dropdown list.
Any thoughts?

I have a spreadsheet file in apple's numbers that I use as a grade sheet. I can generate an individual student's report and email a pdf version of this report to the student. Is there anyway to automate this process to the entire spreadsheet?

Similar answer, as well. My first thought on reading the question was 'mail merge', as it was with Ed's question.
But since you're already generating the individual reports using Numbers, 'printing' those to a PDF file and attaching the file to an email message would seem a better route to go.
That should be doable using either Automator or AppleScript, but my expertise with either of those is about the same level as is was when I responded to Ed's question. I'll wish you luck, and leave this to the Automator or AppleScript experts.

PS: I'd suggest you prepare a copy of the document with the names (and perhaps the marks/grades) replaced with anonymous ones. I suspect a look at the actual file will be necessary to get a handle on its structure.

Can I use Speedgrade to grade still photos?

I'd love to import, grade a .jpg photo file, and export/save it as a .jpg as well. Or integrate Speedgrade controls with Photoshop. Is there any existing way to do that? I have both PS & SG CC.

It is possible to import, grade and export jpg in SG, the same way you do it with any movie clip. But it is impossible to integrate the SG controls into Photoshop.

I use an online grade program to grade students, now that I have Firefox 4, none of the right click menuoptions in my grade program work. This is incredibly disabling! Please help.

Instead of a drop down menu of terms to enter (missing, exempt, required, late, etc.) I have only web browser options when I right click (back, reload etc.) Firefox 4 is not allowing the grade program to be accessed with my right click button. This has only happened in the past few days since my upgrade.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Picture goes blank when new grad filter or brush used.

When I attempt to use a new grad filter or adjustment brush in LR3.6 the picture goes blank i.e. totally black. The history does not update and I can do no other edits until I Ctrl-Z or go to the grid pane or move to the next image. I am running on Windows 7 64 bit and I have re-installed, twice, (repaired) using the latest downloaded LR3.6 off the adobe site. I have done several integity checks which are successful and the problem occurs no matter what catalog I open, small or big. However, my LR 4 beta works perfectly!? This problem came out of the blue and the only software that I have installed on my machine recently was some Windows updates and Firetower which checks changes to my Startup processes.

I have experienced this on my old machine running Win XP with 4 GB RAM except that my picture went totally white, not black. I think it happens when LR demands more memory than what is currently available.
To alleviate the problem you could try the following:
- Increase your LR Cache size to at least 25 GB (by default it is set to 1 GB). Set Cache size in >Edit >Preferences >File handling tab.
- Increase your page file, and - if possible - set your page file (a) on a different physical drive than where your OS resides, (b) on a different physical drive where your LR catalog resides.

I no longer have convenient access to the Sony HDV camera and was wondering if I can simply use a consumer grade high-definition camcorder to digitize the footage into my computer. If so, is there any quality degradation?

Can I use a MY Book Pro external 500 gig Triple interface HD with FCE?

I just recently bought a Macbook pro and purchased FCE HD 3.5. I want to purchase a high capacity external HD. I want it mainly for my projects with FCE and other members of the family will be backing up to it. I want to keep my projects on the external and work on them from there not my main HD.
After doing some online research I was about to purchase the LaCie Big Disk Extreme. However there seemed to be a lot of bad reviews about early disk failures. The G Technology drives sound great but are a little pricey.
I came across the MY Book Pro addition 500 gig Triple interface HD from Western Digital and found that the 500 gig pro had similar spec to the LaCie but they never mention in the specs that it can be used for video editing. They only mention "Fast enough for video editing" in the 1TB raid 0 version. I'm just wondering if anyone is having success using the My Book Pro Edition. I checked the forums first and even check specs from apple on external drives and FCE but I was hope for some real use advise. I'm not trying to cheap out, I'm just trying not to buy a lemon & get the most storage and speed for my buck. I'll buy they higher end if I should. My video productions right now are 10 minute long movies with some video clips and stills but I'm hoping to advance to bigger (High Def) things. Any advise in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

The 500GB MyBook Pro should work fine. Just be sure to use a Firewire connection (not USB) to your Mac and format the drive as Mac OS Extended - Journaled. It will come from the factory as FAT32, so you'll need to reformat it. But wait - don't reformat it until you offload the ButtonManager, FW Driver and Retrospect software. You will need the first two to install your drive.
And that's one of the reasons I stay away from the MyBook drives - they were really designed for Windows systems, not Macs. For one, they have their own FireWire drivers and I see no reason to be required to install device-specific drivers on my Mac in order to use a consumer-grade hard drive. As far as I'm concerned, that's just bad design (or, perhaps design for systems other than Macs ...).
The 500GB Lacie Big Disk did get a bunch of bad reviews. However, the 500GB Lacie d2 Extreme is the same price and has much better reviews. The Lacie d2 Extreme drives are quite reliable; I have many and not one of them has failed me over the years. The 320GB d2 Extreme is currently $140 at newegg.com. See how that compares to the price of the MyBook.

Error while using DBMS_STATS.GATHER_schema_STATS

My database just got upgraded from Oracle 9i to Oracle 11g.
While everything else is working fine post upgrade Oracle, the DBMS_STATS.GATHER_schema_STATS with METHOD_OPT => 'FOR COLUMNS SIZE ALL' , which was working fine in Oracle 9i is throwing error after upgarde.

While going through the link, it seems that METHOD_OPT => 'FOR COLUMNS SIZE AUTO' is obsolete in Oracle 11g and I will have to use METHOD_OPT => 'FOR ALL COLUMNS SIZE AUTO' instead of that. But the option METHOD_OPT => 'FOR COLUMNS SIZE AUTO' used to take just 5 minutes to complete while METHOD_OPT => 'FOR ALL COLUMNS SIZE AUTO' is taking 1 hour.
I want it to take time (5-6 minutes) which the original METHOD_OPT => 'FOR COLUMNS SIZE AUTO' was taking.

HP's Low Grade Hinges and Warranty Issue.

Hello, HP Area Heads, Envy Notebook Division Heads, Support Division Heads and CEO.
I regret to say that perhaps buying an HP Envy laptop worth Rs, 1,15,000/- will turn out to be my big mistake. I never thought that HP would use a LOW Grade material for Hinges that would break on its own within less then 5 months of usage.    If i calculate , I work 5 days a week and 5 months = 100 days. Even if i open and close laptop twice every day = 200 times.      WOW just 200 times and Left Hinges breaks on its own and yet HP disagrees to accept its poor quality.
HP Enginner says it won't be coverd under Warranty, where as your Case Manager Mr. Pratheesh C R says
1.  Your laptop is Covered under repair only warranty
2. and we will repair this for free of cost as an exception.
Now I have multiple objections to this. I can send you several links available on google and youtube videos, which confims that HP laptops has known issue with Left Hinges.
1. So even if you repair it, there are chances that it might break again, due to your poor quality of Hinges. which means there is big expenses waiting if this happens again.
2. What's the use of buying an extended Warranty of 2yrs, if these things are not covered within it. ( Now let me clarify, I am not saying that if i drop the laptop or spill coffee over it and then asking you to repair it free of cost.     I am asking you because its broken on its own due to poor quality and you have known issue with your left hinges)
3. A simple hinges broken, its repair procedure requires a good amount of parts replacement Top Cover, Bottom Enclosure and also disassembling the laptop to fix the hinges, This is very painful, no one likes a postmortem on his new laptop.   This also leaves a possibility that other parts may get damaged in the process.
There is only two ways, that could convince me.
1.   Either replace your faulty product and give me a new laptop.
OR
2. Take the responsibility of fixing hinges when ever is broken in my 2yrs extended Warranty period free of cost.
by adding me to ADP coverage for my exended period of warranty. ( Remember I am not asking you to do any favour if i drop the laptop or spill coffee over it. )
This way, i would be relaxed and would not be worring about quality of hinges and what if after fixing it breaks away again on its own.
Remember laptop is worth Rs, 1,15,000/- . Its brought from my hard earned money. I feel too much of pain.

Costing Indian Rupees : 1,15,000/-   One Lakh, fifteen thousand.
Such a high value PC and Hinges gets broken just within 6 months. This is a case of HP poor quality product.
Yet as per HP Support Service Partner "Jabil Center", Andheri Area, Mumbai City, says that this is considered as damage by customer and it cannot be covered under warranty.
As per them, I have to claim under ADP and for that I have to prove that it was Accidental Damage, which is again subject to HP approval.
(Now I am wondering, was choosing HP over Dell my mistake ?)
As per Engineer, to fix hinges, he has to change Laptop Top Cover and Base enclosure, which means almost dismantling the laptop and reassembling. (as per YouTube videos)
Something that is not acceptable to me.     I would rather demand a replacement for a fault product.

Time Capsule as a server grade network attached storage?

Can anyone comment on the performance of the TC as a network attached storage? Like Read/write speeds? Exactly how server-grade is a hard drive in the TC? They say it's SATA but that's about it.
I am in need of a high speed storage solution for my home network and was considering the Time Machine.

As for the server grade issue, I know that the 500 GB uses a server grade hard drive, but the 1 TB version uses one that's not classified as server grade. Although Apple has clarified that their classification of server grade refers to mean time between failures.

Can I use a recovery disc on a new 120 GB SSD for HP Envy 17 that previously had 2 500GB RAID 0?

I currently have a HP Envy 17-2070NR. I would like to install a new SSD (120 GB) to replace one of the 500 GB HD that are currently in the laptop (the 2 drives are set up RAID 0).
If I install the new drive and remove the two old ones can I use the recovery discs to reinstall windows/drivers/default programs?

Air Auto Update Error -- Flash Builder Burrito.

This is my first attempt at this, so I may be missing something simple.
I'm not having any luck getting an Air app to automatically update.
If I manually go to http://localhost/air1/air1.air and redownload the file I will get a popup that asks if I want to update the app, but when I say ok I get this error.
"There was an error checking for updates. Error# 16816"
I haven't found a reason yet,
Any ideas?

What is the problem?

While going through the link, it seems that METHOD_OPT => 'FOR COLUMNS SIZE AUTO' is obsolete in Oracle 11g and I will have to use METHOD_OPT => 'FOR ALL COLUMNS SIZE AUTO' instead of that. But the option METHOD_OPT => 'FOR COLUMNS SIZE AUTO' used to take just 5 minutes to complete while METHOD_OPT => 'FOR ALL COLUMNS SIZE AUTO' is taking 1 hour.
I want it to take time (5-6 minutes) which the original METHOD_OPT => 'FOR COLUMNS SIZE AUTO' was taking.

Using concatenate function to write report comments

Hi am a high school teacher and have just got my first iPad - lovinging it!!! and am using Numbers and Pages on both my Mac at home and my iPad, but have hit a bit of a snage with using the concatenate funtion in my report generating spreadsheet.
We use a 5 grade descriptor at our school for student outcomes (A-E for simplicities sack here) which I use as the basis for generating comments to explain the students performance at each outcome - this actually saves me hours and gives me more original reports across a whole class - the problem that I am having is that when I use the traditional bracketed IF queries to return the various strings matched to the outcomes Numbers will only let me address the outcome source cell in the first case, whenever i hit the cell again the orignal reference just "highlights"
Any clues as to what I am doing wrong?
Here is the start of the equation:
=CONCATENATE(B1, " ",IF(Ranks and Grades :: Effort 'Nada '="O", Comment Phrases :: B9,(if when i get to here i go to hit Ranks and Grades :: Effort 'Nada' and it just highlights the original entry
Help!!!!! these need to be in yesterday!!!!

Thanks for the help Barry - don't try and author stuff like this on the iPad, just use it for record keeping, viewing and editing, author in the Mac, unfortunately your reply came just a little too late for me no not have laready resorted to using Excel (grumble grumble) but I will be doing the rest of my junior classes on Numbers - is just a nicer environment ot work with, especially with the descriptor cell addresses!!!!
And yes they were typos, working on reports while not beina able to breath (asthma) and writing questions while brain tired from low O2 (yes I'm a science teacher) not a good combo
