Autocad .dwg import into Illustrator CS4

Can you import Autocad .dwg files into Illustrator CS4 keeping polyline widths?  Can joined polylines remained joined once imported?  When opening .dwg files in Illustrator I get very inconsistent results.  Sometimes polylines remained joined and keep their widths, other times not.  There seems to be no rhyme or reason.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

It depends on what version of CAD and Program it came from, it can come from the same source but could have been created originally from an earlier version of the application.
I believe the newer versions of AutoCAD do not have this problem because the polylines and shapes are created differently.
I may also have something to do with the way the CAD operator prepared and exported the file so there may actually be logic to the results.
However I can suggest you might want to look at  plug in that can help you fix the problem if the lines are not join it is called concatenate.
http://rj-graffix.com/software/plugins.html I think it costs $10.00
But if the polylines are nibs from an older CAD app it will always lose it weight but since the nibs retain their color yu might be able to write some actions to select and change the weight or a script to fix all the weights.
If this is happening with newer versions of the CAD programs I would suggest trying the old method of export and use a file in the esp format rather that dwg.

  • Import PSD into Illustrator CS4 Mac Yosemite

Does anybody know how to fix the problem of importing PSD files into Illustrator CS4?
I am using the new OS X Yosemite 10.10.

A work around is saving your psd files as pdf files instead. You can then open them in Illustrator.

  • Can I import into Illustrator and modify a drawing in Appleworks?

Can I import into Illustrator and modify a drawing in Appleworks?

Depending on the detail/complexity/accuracy of the graphics,  you will not likely find back-and-forth wokflows between PostScript-compatible drawing programs (Illustrator, FreeHand, Canvas, Draw, Xara) and OS-meta format (QuickDraw, Quartz, WMF, EMF) based programs ("Works" or "Office" applications) very satisfying.
You encounter instance-specific caveats stemming from two basic issues:
PostScript compatible drawing programs use cubic Bezier curves; two curve handles per path segment. "Works" or "Office" type drawing modules typically use simpler quadratic Bezier curves; one handle per path segment. So going back and forth between involves geometric translations and re-translations which wreck the practicality of editng the paths. PostScript drawing programs use cubic curves for good reason: more shape control with fewer anchors.
The OS-specific meta formats are really not designed for the device-independent resolution fidelity of commercial print. Resolution in vector drawing? Yes. Vector paths are essentially mathematical formulae for *plotting* curves onto a raster grid. (Everything is eventually rasterized; the practical difference between raster and vector graphics is a matter of when.)
So it's a matter of accuracy; the "fineness" of the theoretical grids the curve-handling format/application is designed to plot upon . Meta formats are more about drawing an acceptable shape onscreen, and you can kind of think of what gets sent to a dumb printing device (one without a PostScript "brain") as a glorified enlarged screenshot. The path objects you draw in a PostScript compatible program that have smooth curves that scale well both upward and downward often translate to meta formats as paths with ugly flats or extra kinks that become apparent when scaled. These caveats are unpredictable and tedious to correct. The bother ends up outweighing the advantages you are seeking.
In a nutshell, that's why Illustrator's effective "recommendation" for exporting to Office applicaitons (Save For Office...) is the lowest-common-denominator approach of defaulting to a common raster format (PNG), even though Windows does have a vector-based format (EMF) which Illustrator can export to.
If what you're trying to do is just a one-way trip from some legacy AppleWorks drawings to Illustrator, you'll need an intermediary translation from .awk to something Illustrator can import. You may be able to find an open-source software for doing that.

  • Article - creating complimentary colour groups / colour matching images imported into Illustrator?

    greetings all.
i have a number of pictures that i have imported into illustrator.
some are live traced vector images
    some are bitmaps from photoshop
here is my question. i want to take an image and create a swatch from the range of colours expressed in the image. alternatively i'd like a workflow that allows me to match complimentary colours to what is already there.
i am pretty sure that it can be done via a live trace but often it doesnt give me all the colours i would like to use?
are there any other ways in illustrator, 3 rd party programs or other recommendations that you recommend?
    thank you kindly

  • How can I make a autocad dwg drawing into a rendering in cs4?

I'm taking an autocad file of a product into illustrator/photoshop cs4 workflow to create a rendering quality type graphic....
Is there a good tutorial anywhere, or will anyone be willing to help me through this project??
So far I have imported a dwg into illustrator, and when the cursor is on the gray lines (I made them that way in autocad), a blue line appears, and "path" shows up... those gray lines are a bit larger than what I think I will need... what is going on?
That is where I am at.... I need help from here...

<i don't know what's going on with your file. i get a lot of pdfs from autocad with layers intact. maybe someone else on here knows.>
I am not sure anything IS wrong with my file. my PDF does have all the layers intact. The problem is getting Illustrator to read those PDF layers...
    1) Pt to mm font conversion:
Thanks for the font clarification. What exactly is the conversion between pt (which i belive is "points" on the pica system, correct?) and mm?) In Illustrator, if I select a 10pt stroke, it converts it to 3.528 mm. And if I select 3 pt, that's 1.058 mm. However, I went online to some sort of font converter website and it said that 3 pts = 1.0542 mm and 10 pt = 3.5141 mm. So what's the converstion. Btw, here is an interesting website that explains the different font types: http://www.oberonplace.com/dtp/fonts/point.htm
Even if i set the units to mm, i noticed that the items ins the stroke drop down list are still in "pt". How come Illustrator doesn't have the increments in mm?
About selecting everything on one layer - if i click the circle it says "click to target, drag to move appearance." what does that mean, what does the appearance refer to besides opacity? And if i click anywhere to the right of that circle, it says "indicates selected art (click to select art)." I assume that the triangle in the upper right hand corner of the layer just means that layer is current)
    2) Pen tool:
Your tip on using the "join" command while using the pen tool is GREAT. thanks. that totally helps me. and it's control + j on a PC. what is the difference between the pen and the pencil tool? y do u recommend pen over pencil?
    3) pc3 extension
Can you please tell me more about this? When and where is should the pc3 extension be used? What is difference exactly between Adobe PDF and Adobe PDF.pc3? What are alignments?
any other tips on how to color quickly and efficiently?

  • Can't import Adobe Illustrator CS4 .ai files

I recently upgraded to Adobe Illustrator CS4. When I attempt to paste an .ai file into iWeb I see only a black rectangle. This was not the case with CS3 AI. It seems that I must now first convert the AI CS4 file into a .pdf or .eps before importing to iWeb. Also, QuickLook does not display either CS3 or CS4 versions of AI.
    Have others encountered these behaviors?

Are you referring to a Photoshop file with an alpha layer? iWeb and iPhoto do not support those. Nor does several other Apple applications like Preview, Quicklook, etc. Send a feature request to Apple via:

  • Large PNG wont import into Illustrator

Hello all, this is not a new problem, Ive posted on it before and it was solved, temporarily, here.
Briefly, when I work with transparent PNG's in illustrator, there seems to be a limit to the size they can be and still import successfully into Illustrator.
So here I am working on a poster that requires a large photo to be imported and when I drag it to the artboard, it just does import.
If I try opening it in a seperate illustrator document, it wont open either.
Apparently its a PNG thing because I have been able to successfully open the same image in JPEG, problem is, I need the transparent background for my layout.
Someone told me that InDesign would function better in for this, but I am not familiar with it.
Does anyone know about this problem, ran into it, or solved it?
I appreciate any help you could offer!

Same issue however I am using CS5
      Model Name: Mac Pro
      Model Identifier: MacPro4,1
      Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
      Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
      L3 Cache: 8 MB
      Memory: 8 GB
Again like Flex, as a designer I do some things in Illustrator, but the PNG size limitation is really hurting a current project, that is if that is the problem.
    Thanks

  • PPro Project import into AE CS4 cross dissolve

I am running CS4 and when I try to import a Premiere Project into After Effects the Cross Dissolves do not come over as Opacity keyframes.  It doesn't matter what project I have or what file type I am using.   Any help is appreciated.  Oh and it doesn't work on my old Windows XP machine with CS4 either.  Currently I am running Windows 7 64bit.
    Thanks,
    John Guarino

    Yes they have enough handles.
Yes it is the standard dissolve effect.
No there are no effects (besides the Cross Dissolve) on the video as I want to CC and do some things in AE.
I am stumped.....and don't understand what could be doing it.  Unfortunately it is a huge 15min project with a bunch of cross dissolves and I don't want to manually do it.  I might just have to dynamic link it and use Magnum PI cut finder Script in AE.
    Anyone else???
    Thanks,

  • How can I rectify horrible thick lines after SVG import into Illustrator

I have an SVG file that displays fine in InkScape but erroneously displays lines as huge thick blocks  in Illustrator. The SVG file was created originally by Sibelius 7 music notation app. The only reason I would consider buying Illustrator would be to import Sibelius generated SVG files for graphic manipulation. So I would dearly love to sort this out, or it's a big no-no to Illustrator. Any help really welcome! Thanks in advance!

  • Problems importing into flash CS4

    Hello everyone!
I am attempting to export a captivate project over to flash CS4.  However when it goes from captivate over to flash the result is basically a slide show. It does not show any of the animations that are present in Captivate. I also keep recieving an error message.
I have searched for how to solve this problem for quite a while now and so far have come up with nothing.
This is the error message that flash gives me:
The following elements in your project have not been converted. They are not supported by this importer.
    508 Compliance
A swf animation slide has been imported. The following files must be made available at publish time:
    Project01_slide_22_0.swf
    DefaultPreloader.swf
Please make sure you publish the project to “C:\Documents and Settings\jmillard\Desktop.” Saving the project to this directory will ensure that test project will work with the swf animation slides.
Unfortunately I am on a tight schedule to get this project done and the Captivate 4 and Flash CS4 I am using are both 30 day trials, so I am in quite a hurry.
If you could please help me I'd greately appreciate it!

    Check the settings:
    Edit/Preferences.../PSD File importer...
And then load the *.psd file without the background.
And certainly there is no change in flash...

  • Autocad measurements smaller in illustrator cs4

measurement in autocad is 10mm but in illustrator is 9.994mm

Yes, it is. AI always thinks in points and inches and changes those values. Has been forever this way and you can't really do anything about it. after all, AI is not a CAD program...

  • DWG import to Illustrator CS6

Hi, I have problems when trying to import a DXF file to Illustrator CS6.
The file consists of 4 different pages/layers, but only the first one is imported/available after the import. I already tried to play around with different import settings, but it doesn't work. Any recommendations or ideas how to fix this issue?

You make no sense whatsover. Layers in CAD have no relation to pages and "pages" (drawing areas) are merely a means of defining printable regions or for exporting to sub-assemblies/ drawings or spitting out a PDF/ TIFF since any CAD drawing can have lots of info in it that you never would want to print. If your CAD file is one big drawing it will come over as such or whatever you have defined as your selection for export. In a DXF file, anyway. That aside you have not provided any real info like from where you are exporting using what settings and on what system.
