Autocapitalization of first letter of a sentence

After updating to mavericks and updating "pages", the latter is not autocapitalizing the first letter of a sentence. I searched in the settings but what used to work in the previous versions of Pages doesn't anymore. Settings have been relocated...
Please help

I just opened a document on Pages 5.0. Auto correction is GONE!. While I really like the new interface, I spent years customizing Pages using auto-correction. It won't even capitalize the first word in sentences. Very frustrating.

  • How can I get Mail to capitalise the first letter of a sentence?

    Hello all,
this is my first time using apple Support Community.  i am a new apple user and have just got my first MacBookPro (its wonderful).  however, i am having some difficulties.
How can i get Mail to capitalize the first letter of a sentence and also capitalize 'i' as 'I' automatically?
Also, how can i get apps like Pages to do the same? and for that matter typing into internet sites like this one? look at the lack of automatic punctuation!!
Thank you all for any advice and tips you may have.
    Paul.

I don't think whether it's easier or not is really an issue.  The problem is that all of these wonderful technologies are taking away our understanding of how to communicate in writing.  It's not a matter of being lazy and not "wanting" to do it, but rather getting to a point where many people "can't" do it.
I certainly wasn't pointing any fingers.  I use a calculator (or computer if I happen to be on one at the time) to do the most basic math calculations.  I can be out to lunch with co-workers and we have to pull out a calculator to split a bill 4 ways.  I went through school at a time when calculators were not permitted.  So, at one time, I could have easily done all of that stuff in my head.  So far as math goes, my mind has turned to mush a long time ago.  I doubt I could work my way through a long division problem at this point... even if I sat there and really tried.
Computers were not generally consumer items when I was growing up.  So I didn't grow up in a world with spell checking.  I have certainly grown to use it though and I'm sure my ability to spell properly has diminished somewhat because of it.  I tend to be less careful when typing something out.  If I'm not sure of the spelling on something, I just let my computer either fix it or give me a suggestion for the corrected spelling.  Fortunately, I grew up having to rely on my own ability to spell, so with that foundation, I tend to do fairly well when it comes to spelling.
We're at a point now where systems can correct grammar and sentence structure.  I think all of these are great tools to help us out, but they shouldn't be used to take the place of actually knowing how to do things.  Having said that, I'm fairly sure that is exactly what will happen.  Just as today, I rely almost entirely on some form of electronics for everyday math, I'm sure people growing up today with expert systems able to correct everything will rely on those equally.

  • How do I get my new mac to auto cap the the first letter in a sentence?

can some tell me how to get my new mac to auto capitalise the first letter of each sentence?

Quick answer, Pages 5.0 no longer does this. Frustrating! If you have Pages 4.3, it can do it.
Also, check out the More Like This column on the right. Some people have the same question and you might find some good tips there.

  • First letter of each sentence in pages!

how can I fix the first letter in each sentence, it doesn't turn to uppercase automatically, although i have tryed to choose none, title case etc. in the advanced setting? what should i do?

We guess you are talking about Pages 5. You didn't say.
Feature dropped by Apple along with 100 others.
Pages '09 can capitalise the first letter of sentences automatically.

  • Why doesn't mail capitalize the first letter of a sentence?

How do I make "mail" capitalize the first letter of a sentence? If not WHY not? If not WHY hasn't anyone from Apple addressed this annoying problem?

Hi thank you you for contacting Apple
Enable or disable the automatic capitalization feature on the Apple iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.
    1. Select Settings from the Home screen.
    2. Select General.
    3. Select Keyboard.
    4. Turn Auto-Capitalization to on (green) or off (white).

How can I have the first letter after a sentence ending period automatically capitalize?  Can't seem to figure it out...thanks!

You need to fix capitalization in Pages Preferences > Auto-Correction. When you select this option, you can just keep typing in lower case and the first letter of the next sentence will automatically promote to upper case.

  • How do I get messages on my macbook to autocapitalize the first word in a sentence?

I want it to work like the iphone does during texting.  The only thing I've found is an autocorrect for spelling for nothing for capitalizing.  Is this something that Messages will even do?

    Hi,
    Sorry for the delay.
I was hooked up doing something else yesterday and when I got free the Apple Site was showing me the "we'll be Back" Picture.
I do think that an update is the cause.
At the Launch of Mavericks the file structure that Messages as a Sandboxed app uses was changes.
In Mountain Lion and Messages 7 the Archive of all Saved chats and the iMessages Chat.db were held in ~/Library/Messages
In Mavericks it is ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.ichat/Data/Library/Messages/Archive for the Saved chats
The Chat.db file is still in ~/Library/Messages but it seems to be been recreated afresh for that update.
As iMessages can be picked up about 2 days or so after they are Sent you may find you have managed to get some older ones to "sync" to the Mac.

  • Automatically capitalize the first letter in the sentence?

As the title said, is there an option for that on mac? Thanks in advance.

That depends on the program. MS Word should provide that function, of course, as does Pages. In programs like Mail and TextEdit, that is not an option.

  • Uppercase first letter of every new sentence

    Hi Guys,
I am working on a design for a magazine for which, at the moment, I need to type a lot of the texts in InDesign instead of copy-pasting them from word or...
This made me a little annoyed since I don't get to uppercase each first letter of each sentence automatically like Word etc. do?
So: how can I automatically uppercase the first letter of each new sentence?
    Many thanks,
    Bob

Unbelievable that I only found this now and that it is that simple!
    Thanks!!

  • Auto correct capitalization of first letter in sentence in Mail?

I was used to Mt. Lion auto correcting my first letter in my sentences in Mail and now it does not.  The same is true for smaller case "i".  Sounds like both are not working in Mavericks Mail.  Hope this will get corrected (pun intended) in the next iteration.

That has never been a feature of Mac OS X or Mail. I suspect you had a Mail plugin installed that was doing that for you, and that plugin must not be working in Mavericks.

  • Pages won't capitalize first letter of sentence

I don't know if this is just me or if anyone else has had this problem but I find it kind of hard to believe I isn't a feature. My problem is that Pages doesn't seem to want to capitalize the first letter of a sentence. I can easily change it between "allCaps", "smallCaps" and none but can't make it automatically capitalize after a fullstop. Sorry if this is a stupid question, I've only recently gotten my iMac (love it) but constantly holding down shift is getting a little tiresome.
    Thanks.

The free WordService from Devon Technologies has a service to capitalize the first word in a sentence.

  • How do I capitalise first letter of sentence

Hi there. Just moved over to Mac and Pages, and love it, for the most part, except it doesn't capitalise the first letter of a sentence. for instance the "f" in "for" there does not come up automatically as "F" as it does in Word, and I believe in previous versions of Pages.
    I'm in Version 5.1 (1769), and Mac os x 10.9.2.
    Any ideas, folks?
    Cheers, Matt.

If you never had Pages '09 before, no you will not have it. Only people who upgraded.
There is a huge difference between Pages 5 and Pages '09, the previous version.
Pages 5 is missing 100 features and is quite buggy. IMHO it is really an unanounced beta version.
Pages '09 is superior in almost every area, with only a few minor exceptions.
Even Pages 5's touted compatibility with iDevices is debatable and has the price of an unstable file format that is biting a few users in the bum.
You won't be able to miss features you never had but the biggest concern I have is over the complex, proprietary file format that is practically unrecoverable when things go wrong, as they seem to do. One that Apple regularly dumps. Pages 5 and 5.01 can't even open Pages 5.1 format files, and Pages 5 damages previous formats.

Your question went unanswered for nearly a day because of the meaningless subject line you used. Please take a moment to read How to get help quickly.
There are a couple of ways to achieve what you want. The way I would do it is to make each line a separate paragraph, and wrap them in a div with an ID called "earth". The following CSS style rule will make the first letter of each paragraph 24px tall and green:
    #earth p:first-letter {
      color:#090;
      font-size:24px;
This uses the first-letter pseudo-element and applies it to all paragraphs in the earth div.

I have the same problem. For the previous Pages, the problem is solved by +Menu > Preferences > Auto-Correction Preferences > check Fix Capitilization+. For this update I cannot find any solution!
