Autocomplete oddity in Safari 4

How does Safari decide how to autocomplete a URL that you're typing? There seems to be no consistency.
For example, typing "linkedin" will either result in "http://linkedin/" (which Safari cannot, obviously, find) or "http://www.linkedin.com" (which is the correct one).
So far, I have found no combination of cleared history, bookmarks or other voodoo that explains the decision-making process. However, if the first option is autocompleted (with failure), a second attempt at typing "linkedin" will always return the correct URL.

Greetings,
The only items that are autocompleted are those that are bookmarked or in your History. If you had mistakenly typed "linkedin" and pressed Return quickly enough, you would obviously get an error, and that error would now be in your history, along with the correct URL if you bookmarked it or visited it earlier.
So the next time you type "linkedin" it should give you the correct URL if you don't type quite as fast as the first time, rather than the incorrect URL you got previously.

  • PNG colour oddity in safari

Does anyone know why Safari and Preview (Voorvertoning) show my png image with other colours than photoshop and fireworks? It can't be the colour management as windows computers show it the correct way. Is the png display in safari flawed?
You can see the image here:
Powerbook G4 Titanium   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Mac Mini

SFW and ImageReady CS2 have an Embed Profile option
in JPEG (not sure if it shows up in PNG option?)
The option is not available for png
    +++++++
GIF is "multicolored" (256 colors) and it animates
and supports transparent backgrounds with Matte
blending — are you saying PNG displays more than 256
    colors?
What about file size between the two?
PNG has definitely more colours than gif (it is truecolor, 16.7 million colours), it does support transparent backgrounds (only Internet Explorer struggles with the transparency, but that will be solved in IE 7), it's lossless and it's filesize is much smaller (though you might have to drop some unused colours out first). Animated PNG is not supported by the PNG consortium, but animated PNGs do exist.
By the way, PNG is the standard image format of Macromedia (or should I say Adobe ) Fireworks. This will probably mean that the PNG support in Photoshop will be better on the next release.

  • Since installing IOS6 autofill won't work in Safari.

Since installing IOS6 on my Ipad3, autofill won't work in Safari.  It used to fill my name and address.  Please help!
I've enabled Autofill, switched off Private Browsing, turned off Block Pop Ups...it was fine till I began with IOS6.

    Hi all,
it seems that the root cause for this issue is identified:
Unfortunately it's not a bug, but a bufix which is responsible for this changed behaviour of autocomplete function in Safari browser.
The bugfix was introduced in iOS 6 and corrects that password input elements on HTML forms with the autocomplete attribute set to "off" were being autocompleted although they should not.
You can check if this is also the root cause in your case by searching in the source code of the webpage with the HTML form if the autocomplete tag is present and set to "off":
    <input type="Password" name="password" ... autocomplete="off" ... >

  • Passwords and AutoComplete

Good afternoon. Faced with a problem that does not work, AutoComplete passwords in safari. Support advised to reset the phone and check on the bare phone. It worked. But when you restore my settings Icloud AutoComplete is not working again. What to do?

Recheck your settings. Something in them is incorrect (based on your post). When you restored, you restored all of the previous settings.
Incidentally, I have no clue what the other post is referring to - "firmware." iOS is an operating system, not firmware.

  • MAKE URL AUTOFILL STOP!!!

When typing in a web-address, Safari adds text to the tail of what I've typed, so when I press enter it screws up my address. I have all of the autofill checkboxes disabled in the Preferences. How can I completely remove this annoying feature?
Example: While typing, 'http://mydomain.com/mybackpage', Safari adds text I don't want resulting in, 'http://mydomain.com/mybackpage/crudIdontwant.html'.
I'm aware that pressing delete will remove that bs but I shouldn't have to press delete to remove some crud that Safari inserts which happens a lot.

Darn, I thought I read somewhere it was possible to disable the feature entirely. I just found a few pages of other users moaning about autocomplete, and one suggestion has been locking the History.plist file. Apparently it won't allow Safari to save your history to the file.
Okay you can disable the History from Autocompleting, but I don't know of any way to prevent it from automcompleting from your booksmarks.
    (1) In Safari go to History>Clear History
    (2) Close Safari
    (3) Go to Home>Library>Safari
    (4) Get Info on the File History.plist
    a) Change Ownerships & Permissions to Read Only
    b) Check the locked tab on top
    c) Click on the little lock icon on the bottom
Safari stills remembers the history until you close Safari I wish I knew of a way to stop autocompleting from bookmarks Safari's autocompletion is its worst feature

  • Autocomplete email address in Yahoo doesn't work in Safari

Earlier this year there was some discussion on this topic, but it is not resolved. I am new to the Mac and find I'm having the same problem. Yes, autocomplete is turned in Safari pref., but that shouldn't matter. The autocomplete feature of Yahoo comes from their website, not from information stored on our personal computers.
Anyone know if there is a way to get Yahoo mail to autocomplete email addresses in the To: box in Safari as it does in browsers on the PC?
    Thanks,
    Ralph

Hello, Ralph. Welcome to Apple Discussion~!!
Yahoo mail & Safari are not very compatible, I use earthlink web
mail it also does not autocomplete. Cater to the ms world.
Sorry not the answer you are looking for, perhaps someone has some
workaround but none I have seen so far.At this point I do not think so.
I wonder however if you could get your web mail to come into Apple
mail you could check in Mail & Address book forum.

  • How do I turn off autocomplete in Safari

I am using Safari 5.0.1 on a Win7 64-bit PC.  I have several major problems with this.
One is a petty annoyance, perhaps, but it drives me up the wall!  I CANNOT turn off the autocomplete when I am in the address bar.  I DO NOT USE AUTOCOMPLETE, and don't like it.  It interferes with my typing and concentration.
DO NOT TELL ME to use it.  I refuse.
I need to know how to turn it off!  I can do it in both IE and Firefox, so why can't I do it in Safari?
    Jim

You can also set the Boolean pref <b>browser.urlbar.autoFill</b> to <i>false</i> on the <b>about:config</b> page if you want to keep using the drop down list.

  • Strange behavior in safari autocomplete function

    Good day
Today I was testing my java application and I noticed a strange safari behavior in autocomplete function. I'm going to explain better the problem: my java application is a simple rest web service deployed in jboss7, so when i call an url like 127.0.0.1:8080/myws/testit my application prints in the log file "test successful". I've noticed that when i search the url in my address bar and i find it in the log the phrase "test succesful" appears even if I've not yet pressed the enter key to confirm that I want to go to that url. So I've thought that autocomplete function calls that url also when the user has not yet confirmed the operation. Why does safari do this? I've tried with other browsers but thet work correctly.
    Thanks a lot

  • Yahoo has disabled Autocomplete for Safari

For anyone having problems using Yahoo email and finding that the Autocomplete function of their Address book does not work anymore:
A Yahoo Tech confirmed to me that they have temporarily disabled JUST that feature for all Safari users until they figure out how to implement it properly.
Apparently it works fine on some versions of Safari and not on others, so they just disabled it entirely for the moment.
I was running around in circles trying to figure this out because my MOTHER uses Yahoo mail and was having problems. It turns out the problem is NOT Apple, but Yahoo.
I was able to change the User Agent of Safari and it worked fine, but that is under the hidden DeBug menu and not really an option for most people.
Oddly enough the Autocomplete feature still works on Safari 2.0.3 under 10.4.7 but not under any other version I can see. Oh well.
For anyone interested, the CAMINO browser will work with Yahoo Mail's Autocomplete feature.
Also- Yahoo's "Nicknames" feature has apparently been disabled for EVERYONE (Mac & Windows). Nicknames are different than Autocomplete.
It was nice to hear that they are not just ignoring Safari users and that they are actively working to solve this (small) problem.

<pre>Also- Yahoo's "Nicknames" feature has apparently been disabled for EVERYONE (Mac & Windows). Nicknames are different than Autocomplete.</pre>
Thanks for that piece of information. Does Yahoo have a page somewhere explaining this stuff?

  • Safari obeys autocomplete="off". How ignore?

There's some non-standard html attribute code (I think it's created by Microsoft?) that can be used in e.g. input tags in forms. It's called "autocomplete" and the designer can chose "on" or "off".
When he's adding autocomplete="off" to an input field in a login form, his intentions are that the browser won't be allowed to remember the login for future sessions.
As the code is non-standard, and since people can chose whether to keep a login or not (in both keychain and browser), the attribute is pretty much useless. It shouldn't exist.
I am frequently using a site which has this attribute in the login form. Earlier, when I was using Camino, I had no problems since Camino did the right thing and paid no attention to the attribute. Hence, I stored the login in the keychain, and didn't have to type it manually on each visit.
But I switched to Safari a month ago, and now I have to type it each and every time. It's extremely annoying.
So, I wonder if anyone knows if I can remedy this in some way locally, e.g. within the package files or in any other way?

I found this "bug" already reported at WebKit:
    http://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10951
At least it's some confort knowing that I'm not alone about the frustration....
Here's also a description about the "autocomplete" attribute:

  • Is it possible to add multiple contacts to Safari autocomplete for iPads used by more than one person regularly?

  • Problem with autocomplete after Safari quit unexpectedly

Safari quit unexpectedly when I tried opening an ebay page. I chose to reopen it, and the same happened. Now I can't get Safari to autocomplete the URL when I type in www.ebay.com - and it is one of my bookmarks.
I've tried resetting, rebooting, even removing the bookmark file. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Your system has the malware commonly known as Flashback. Read about it here:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5244
Download and install the updates offered in Software Update. To run Software Update go to the  (Apple) menu and select "Software Update…"
After that, and only after, change all your passwords, starting with the financial institutions in which you hold most of your assets.
You should also consider using OpenDNS which has recently been improved to prevent this malware from spreading. It's free and has many other useful features.

  • Safari email autocomplete is wrong

When I start typing my Exchange email address on any web form in Safari, once I type the @ symbol Safari completes the rest of the email address automatically.... but its wrong.  It tacks on some more characters at the end that I always have to delete.  To be clear this does not appear to have anything to do with Autofill settings (the drop down box that appears when typing in a form).
This appears to be a Safari problem, it does not happen in Chrome.  Also, it only happens with one email address and always when I type the @ symbol.  I can't figure out how to fix this and it is beyond annoying!  Anyone had this issue?  I am on Mavericks.
    Thanks!

Problem solved!  A long time ago I had tried to setup a keyboard shortcut to fill in my email address on my iPhone.  You know when you type 'btw' and it automatically changes it to 'by the way'...  I tried to setup something like this to autocomplete my long email address so I didnt have to tap it out all the time on my phone.  This was well before I bought my Macbook.
I just checked my Keyboard preferences on the Macbook and this old text shortcut was in there.  I deleted it and problem solved.  Well it never worked right anyway, I had a 'dot' in there that I think screwed it up.  I just tested a new shortcut without a 'dot' and it works as it should.

  • Autofill autocomplete does not work in Safari on 3gs since ios 6.01 update

I have tried many fixes but cannot get autofill autocomplete to work on Safari since ios 6.01 update. Any other fixes?

I also have the same Exact Problem, only your explanition appears more technical and understandable. This problem appears more severe on YouTube.com videos and alike, however it is also severly choppy and problematic on other sites. Surprisingly Live Broadcast videos work better than not Live videos, however this is not something I'd like when my data isn't throttled yet. I crosstested it to see if there is any issues on my iPhone 4S (iOS 6, last version) and Galaxy S4 (Android Kit Kat, last version on S4) and there is no issues on those devices so it is an iOS 8(+0.1/0.2) and iOS 8.1 problem and I am 100% confident about it.
I do think it is the video player's problem with Websites and Webstreaming. There is no problems playing music videos on my device's storage. I didn't get that many error messages but it just doesn't play properly on Safari and Chrome, like what you are experiencing too. I may go ahead and report it too because it is gotten to a point where it is annoying to watch videos. It is not just an over 4G (+ or - LTE) only issue, it is also via Wifi even so it is a tad better. I can't tolerate playing a video 15 seconds in, have to wait 15 more seconds for it to play, it plays to 0:35 then I have to wait 15 more seconds. Even a 240p video, it does it so, it is clearly not a tolerable bug. I don't have a work around so far (tried everything from reset to wipe the phone and reinstall all the apps).
My Device is an iPhone 6+ with iOS 8.1 (yes, it is not just exclusive to the iPhone 5S. I assume it also effects the iPhone 6 based on technical specifications).
