Autofill Address Bar acting up

Hello,
I was wondering if someone could help me with the autofill for the Address Bar. I usually like it but in the last few months it's been acting strange. The first thing that went wrong was it refused to save www.ebay.com in it's memory so when I type www.eb it won't auto fill. This is annoying since I use ebay often and I hate having to type it in every time. Recently I went to an international ebay page so it started filling that in making it really annoying. So I wanted to wipe out all of the auto fill addresses. So I cleared the history but it still kept filling certain pages in. The funny thing is only certain ones remained in the cache so now less used pages come up before ones I use often because those were erased. So I decided to reset the cache. That didn't work either. It still auto filled the addresses. Finally, I tried reseting Safari and it still auto fill the addresses. The problem is, it didn't remember the addresses that I use often but still uses pages I visited maybe once. It's really annoying. Is there a way to completely erase the auto fill for the address bar and start over? I'm really getting annoyed.
Thanks,
Lisa

this is a common lament, but even if you did erase the url autocomplete the problem would eventually return.
i'd suggest getting either SafariStand (free) or Saft ($). both have "keyword" functionality, which allows you to type in 'e' in the address bar (or whatever you want) to go directly to http://www.ebay.com
also, if you don't want to reach all the way over to the delete button to kill autocomplete, you can just hit control-d.

• How do I stop autofill of addresses in the address bar

I just switched to Mac from PC. I purchased a used macbook with OS X (10.5.5). I am trying to figure out how to stop Safari from automatically displaying website addresses in the address bar when I start to type in an address. Also along the same subject, is there a way to clear that information as these are websites the previous owner visited and some are rather vulgar. Any help would be appreciated.

hi there, jhy --
Welcome to Apple Discussions!
We're a bunch of Mac users helping each other,
so glad you found us.
Ok, here's where to go for starters, OK?
1. Go to the main Safari menu, at the upper left corner of the menu bar,
Then select "Preferences", then go to:
General: Remove history items "After one day."
Autofill: Uncheck all options of Autofill,
go to "Edit" button for each one, and select "Remove All."
Then go to
Security. Select "Show Cookies" and then "Remove All."
Then to over to the Google Search "Search Discussions" at the upper left side ------->
and click and hold on the magnifying "Q" thingie just to the left of the word "Search"
and select "Clear Recent Searches."
That at least is a good start, I hope.

• Address bar "autofill" jumps to end

I asked this question before and no one seems to have noticed it, so I'm going to try again, (if an admin could delete my other post i'd appreciate it)...
anyways, onto my problem...
When I'm typing in the address bar, if I hesitate for a second, it jumps to the end of the line unhighlighting everything... as an example, I start typing apple.com/... the moment I hit the "/" and hesitate it'll autofill with apple.com/imac (since that may have been the last thing I went to) and unhighlights everything, so if I wanted to go to apple.com/macmini/features (or whatever) I have to back up to the first "/" and start typing from there.... Quite goofy and time consuming... If anyone has any tips I'd appreciate! Thanks everybody.
James

well, Safari-Reset Safari will remove all of your autofill entries ( except for bookmarks ) so should ease the problem for a while ( it also deletes all cookies, empties the cache & removes google search entries).
I'm assuming your original post above is exactly right? esp the unhighlighting & jumping to the end of the line? ( I know, I know, that's what you wrote - but just wanted to be certain....)
That seems just like the response you'd expect if you touched a right arrow key ( on a normal kbd) So.... are they're any special trackpad/mouse/input settings or software you use on the normal account, that wouldn't have been active on the test account?
A list of what you've done so far ( eg the safari plist..... ) could be handy - we've already got stubby index fingers.

• Forms act as address bars

While posting in forums I drag and drop text within that ''form''.
An error window pops up stating, "That is not a valid URL."
I click ok and move on, thinking it's a bug on their end.
Today I did the same thing in another forum. I dragged the word, ''settings'' within that field, but this time, a webpage opened up, settings.com and I freaked!!
Something is causing all open forms to be treated as if they were address bars.
I thought I'd post here first, just in case it's a know bug, but now I'm off to scan my system, just in case it's a bug on my end.

• I want name on address bar goes to home page, not search engine

Just today I hooked up a new modem/router that I purchased at a WIndstream store. I have been browsing the internet for years with Firefox. I have changed the keyword.url setting in my Firefox configuration (see https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/833252#answer-197476) so that the new version would act like the old version and go directly to the webpage when the name was typed in the address bar. For example: when I type in "windstream" (no ".net" or".com") I would go directly to windstream' home page.
However, when I hooked up my new modem/router I my browser is hijacked and goes to a Windstream search page. I have tried everything from re-installing Firefox, re-changing the "keyword.url" setting, I even tried the Firefox ad-on here (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/browse-by-name/).
All to no avail......there is something that has changed by adding Windstream's hardware and connecting to their network that will not allow me to use this function of Firefox.
Nothing else changed, but a new piece of hardware.....
Changed keyword.url to : http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=
Re-installed Firefox after cleaning all history and cookies.
Tried the add-on "Browse by name"
Wasted my time calling Windstream tech support.
Changed to openDNS
Tried to disable the feature through Windstream's web page, but then it just happens with the new search engine.

Opt-out of Windstream's search service: Type in something to get their sneaky web search page to come up, then click the tiny link at the bottom right "about this page". That sends you to a page where you can opt-out of their service.
To opt-out from their "valuable" sneaky service, you have to choose to opt-in to another search service.
You have to do this with each browser. And it still sends you to your search engine's results page, not to your URL the way you might want it to.
I would rather the default be to allow me to opt-in if I choose to, not have to jump through hoops to find out how to opt-out. It's taken me weeks to discover this. Annoying!

• Search and Address bar not working.

Hello, I have this problem were whenever I try to type in something into the search or addresys bars, nothing happens. It's like the enter key isn't working. There is not usual picture next to the search bar (the one that shows you what search engine you're using. If it's google it shows a "g" next to the bar). Instead there is just a picture of a blank page as a placeholder. When I try to go in and add a new search engine by managing the search engine list, there is no option to add a new search engine. I have already tried going into the firefox folder on my computer and deleted the formhistory.sqlite file that is the supposed problem. No avail. I have even gone so far to delete and reinstall firefox to my computer. Well, that didn't work either. So I waited until the next update to see if my problem would be fixed THEN. I am currently on firefox 19.0, which is, as of writing, the most current version. I have tried restarting firefox with all addons removed. And for good measure, I deleted anything that ended with ".sqlite" in my firefox folder. I have tried to get the the about:config menu but do not know how considering how my address bar refuses to search. The greatest thing is that my address bar can still remember all the sites I've typed into it before, but for some unknown reason, cannot take me to any of them! I really don't know what to do next. I can only suppose that I could try completely deleting everything firefox has stored on my computer, as I don't know if just uninstalling the program actually did that. Other then my search bar problem, firefox has been acting fairly normally besides a few minor hiccups here and there. I am trying to remember if I downloaded anything before my search bar problems started or not, but it is always a possibility. I did download the firefox beta for windows 8 metro mode but I can't remember if that was before or after firefox started acting up. It's possible considering that softonic thought they were being really nice by including fbdownloader for free with my firefox metro browser. I am now no longer using softonic ever again. But that's all the evidence I can think up right off the tip of my head. Sorry if this was kinda long, and if any of my description isn't clear or make sense please ask and I can try to verify. Also, if I haven't said this already, my search bar is only not working in firefox. Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Safari are all working fine. Just my luck, I guess. If anyone could help me out, I'd be much obliged. Not being able to use the address bar has been really inefficient. Thank you.

This is the solution I got:
on:
;-please follow these steps:
1. Enter about:config in the Firefox location bar and press Enter.
You should see a warning that making changes to the Firefox configuration can be potentially harmful to Firefox's integrity. Click the I'll be careful, I promise button to continue.
2 In the Search box at the top, enter keyword as the search term. You should see a few remaining items, one of these is keyword.URL. It should be bold.
3 Right-click on the keyword.URL setting and select MODIFY from the dropdown menu.
enter your favorite search engine
In my case
I entered
https://www.google.com/search?q=
And that was a super fix
for more cool stuffs like [http://example.com website Alexa ranking ]

• How do I get back my small icon for one click completion of my name and address etc. I lost it when I got back my web address bar

I was getting frustrated that I had no address bar to put in an address and go straight to the page, but in restoring that I have lost my small icon which I clicked on when I wanted to complete all my personal data on the many sites such as the council, shopping sites etc. It used to fill in my name, address, telephone number, email address, etc. It was a small square firefox icon. I am using a Toshiba Laptop, with Windows Vista operating system

"small pencil" - Is this the '''exact''' extension you have installed?
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/autofill-forms/
I don't know where you are getting '''Ctrl + Q''' from - that extension uses '''''Alt + J''''' to trigger the 'autofill' feature when the cursor is in the first form field.
'''FillForms''' extension doesn't seem to have a "small pencil" associated with it.
But it does use '''Ctrl + Q''' till web forms.
• Why doesn't anything on my address bar work?

For weeks now, my address bar is totally useless! The back/forward buttons are not available - address field remains blank regardless of tabs address (or will not change from previous address visited) - refresh button does not refresh. Sometimes, it helps to close and reopen, sometimes I totally restart my pc to get it to act normal....today it worked for only about 15 minutes after a reboot!

I have determined that it is after I choose 'printable view' from a website and after printing, the address field is blank, as well as the directional buttons and refresh won't work.

• How do I disable search suggestions in the Address Bar when I start to type?

As of the latest version, typing in the address bar suggests Google search terms in addition to suggestions from history. How can I change it to the previous mode of only suggesting from my history?
Additionally, this update seems to have removed the address bar autofilling the top suggestion as I type. How can I get this feature back as well?
Thanks in advance.

You can check the browser.urlbar.autoFill pref(s) on the about:config page.

See "Prevent Firefox from automatically completing URLs":
Did you check the setting for the location bar.
* Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Location Bar: When using the location bar, suggest:

• I used to write e.g. "onet" in the address bar and firefox opened page "onet.pl". After reinstalling Windows it only moves me to Google. How can I change it?

Thank you in advance!

Firefox's address bar ("location bar") has an "autofill" feature based on your history. Once you've visited onet.pl the next time you type onet Firefox should suggest that location by pre-filling it in on the address bar. Is that not working? Does it work for .com sites or not for any sites?
Or if you meant more generally that you want to type a word and have .pl added to the end, then you can change what Firefox does with address bar entries by disabling the search feature. Then Firefox will use a "fixup" procedure instead. This change needs to be made in about:config. Here's how:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''keyw''' and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the '''keyword.enabled''' preference to switch it from true to false
(4) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''fix''' and pause while the list is filtered
(5) If the '''browser.fixup.alternate.suffix''' preference isn't .pl you can double-click to edit it

• Tab, Back button, address bar.....

Sorry for the double post. Original was posted in the wrong forum.
Lately, when I click on the tab button or command tab nothing happens (it does not open a tab).
2. When I attempt to click the back button same result, nothing happens. Now, I can use the delete button to go back to the previous page.
3. Clicking on the home button does nothing as well. For example it will display the home page, www.apple.com in address window, but it actually does not open the page. The same applies to the google search bar. When I type a search word, the address appears in the address bar of safari but without any results. It is also happens when type directly into the address bar.
It seems that the toolbar just locks up (can't add, refresh or exit any page). This quite annoying.
I have emptied the cache, reset safari, deleted the plist and still nothing. Any suggestions?
PS
Sorry for the long essay.

HI,
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
bpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
Make sure Safari is not running in Rosetta. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle so it faces down. Where you see Open using Rosetta... *make sure that is NOT selected*.
From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences and select the Autofill tab. Click the Edit button next to; Other forms. Delete both .google.com and .apple.com and click Done. Relaunch Safari and see if you can access both sites now.

• Combined search and a address bar issues.

Hello.
I have OS X Lion on my iMac 27", and my MacBook 13.3". On my MacBook there was an update for safari where the search and address bar are combined into 1, and I updated this via Software update. On my iMac, there is no update and I'm stuck with the old boring Safari.
Please help as I keep typing searches into the address bar by accident and it annoys me.
Thanks in advance.

What is the current setting for the location bar?
* Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Location Bar: When using the location bar, suggest: History, Bookmarks, History and Bookmarks, Nothing
* https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Location+bar+autocomplete
You can check these prefs on the about:config page and possibly reset them via the right-click context menu to the default value:
*browser.urlbar.autoFill
*browser.urlbar.autocomplete.enabled
*browser.urlbar.maxRichResults

• Disable address bar auto-complete?

I see by searching that this problem goes back 4 years. Have they seriously not added a simple checkbox to turn this feature on and off? Adding a space before typing a URL is an effective workaround if you have to remember it EVERY TIME you type in the address bar. Does anyone know a better workaround?

Did anyone ever discover the fix or solution to this? I am trying to solve this as well. Turning on privacy. Clearly cache, browser history, autofill, etc. none of them seem to fix the issue that as soon as you start typing something in the URL field of the browser, it starts flashing a bunch of websites that might closely match what you might type in. Very annoying and disruptive.

Welcome to Apple Discussions
Other than the work-around you mention, the only way to reduce the number of automatic URL suggestions appearing in the address bar is to minimize your cache file (Empty Cache in the Safari Menu), clear your History on a frequent basis, and eliminate any bookmarks via your bookmarks manager that are inactive or rarely used. There is no way to fully eliminate it unless you do not want a cache file, plus have no need for retained bookmarks.
