Autofill iPhone/iPod with entire albums only

Hello.  Does anyone know how to cause an iPhone or iPod to autofill only entire albums from iTunes?  (I just got an iPhone G4.)  I'll be as explicit as I can...
I understand already that I can connect my iPhone, select it in the iTunes nav pane, select the Music tab at the top of the main window, choose "sync music" then "selected playlists, artists, blah blah", the pick through the albums and decide what gets synced.  But this is not the question.  And besides which, the iPhone will still be getting random songs from the various checked albums until capacity is reached.  What I'm talking about would probably be a higher-level or more behind-the-scenes option (I expected to find it in preferences - was surprised at the ommission).
I would like to know how to command that the iPhone or other external take in only whole albums.
One example of how I picture this in action.  I connect my iPhone and select the general "Music" folder in the nav pane (just below the iPhone icon itself, not the iTunes music library), I of course see whatever songs are on the device in the main window and the "Autofill From" and "Autofill" buttons on the bottom.  I would select a playlist (I have a number of them set up by genre and other limiters) or the whole library in Autofill From, then click Autofill.  iTunes would begin to push music to the iPhone, but it would push only entire randomly selected albums to the device.
Another example of how I'd like to see this work.  I connect my iPhone and, like described earlier, go to the Music tab, I then take pains to select there whatever playlists or artists etc that I want iTunes to choose from when syncing.  I would press the "Sync" button on the bottom right and iTunes would begin to push music to the iPhone.  But, again, it would push only entire albums to the device; I suppose the program would be choosing its albums at random from the playlists, and doing what it could to include the desired (checked) albums, or albums by desired artists, but only syncing so many albums as capacity will allow, by which I accept that some albums will be left out.
Thanks

Do this with by making a smart playlist.
* First put your Shuffle to random "by albums" (Controls menus, then shuffle menu, then turn shuffle on).
Then make a smart playlist with these rules:
* No rules
* Limit to [size iPod] selected by [random]
* Select live updating
Now you get a cool random album playlist. If you don't like some of them, delete them and new albums will pop up in their place. A whole new list is made by deleting them all. You can transfer your playlist to to your ipod.

Yes I've done a reset but it made no difference.

  • Songs to buy with complete album only, why?

I wanted to buy a song (Kraftwerk - Computer Liebe) in the iTunes store. Unfortunately you can get it only if you buy the complete album (Computerwelt). This is not what I want, so I bought it from another online music store in Germany. In the end Apple lost a deal. Like DRM, the restriction to buy the complete album, does not make sense, as there are other shops where you can get what you want.

One suspects that part of Apple's original strategy for keeping the iTunes store (relatively) simple to administer was the fixed price per track, irrespective of duration or indeed popularity. While this model works fine for the typical rock & pop tracks of 3-4 minutes and albums of 8-12 tracks it starts to look unfair with longer tracks. Take at the extreme an album like Mike Oldfield's Amarok with a single track. Given the choice to buy the track at 79p or the album at £7.99 which would you choose? No suprise then that this is presented as an Album Only purchase. In addition to any specific restrictions that might be imposed by the artist or label where one track is significantly longer than others it seems that the store will only allow it as part of a whole album purchase. I note that, with the example you give, Amazon allow the purchase of this track individually whereas iTunes does not. One of the changes that Apple have signaled is variable pricing which may in future mean that longer tracks will be made available for an extra cost.

  • Bought an album from itunes and put it on both my iphone and ipod. The album only plays on the ipod?

I recently bought a few albums from the itunes store and transferred them to both my iphone and my ipod nano. The songs play on itunes on my computer without a problem. The songs appear on my iphone but they won't play. They play fine on my nano. I didn't know if it's because I had it on 2 i-devices simultaneously so I took the albums off the nano and resync'd both devices. Still won't play on my iphone. I checked all the other albums I bought recently from the itunes store and it's the same issue. A friend suggested deauthorizing/reauthorizing my computer, but that didn't help either. Help?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Try deleting the problematic tune (electing to remove original file if/when prompted) and then re-downloading the file from the iTunes store.
You can re-download content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option from the Quick Links section in the top right corner of the iTunes homepage in your iTunes application on your computer.
You can re-download content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option at the bottom of the screen of the iTunes app on your iOS device.
If the problem re-occurs, select the content which is causing a problem and use the 'Report a problem' button in Your Purchase History using your computer.

  • Working with entire albums, not individual songs

    ... is this possible?
I've installed iTunes 7 before deciding whether to buy an iPOD nano.
I have a couple of hundred albums, too many to put all of them on a nano.
I want to be able to select a whole album with one click, so with six clicks I can select six albums for syncronisation with the iPOD. I don't want to have to select each track (possibly 100+ clicks). Can I do this?
A work around to this might be if the coverflow "mode" displayed only the songs in the selected album, or if a playlist was created for each album automatically, neither of which I can find options for. Am I missing something?
As it stands at the moment I don't think I would get an iPOD. I want to take a different selection of albums with me every day but that doesn't seem to be what it's designed for...
I'm sure I can't be the only person that wants to use it like this? Any help gratefully received.

Well, I'm not sure that's the best way to go about adding songs to your iPod, but you can do it that way. Make a new playlist. It may help to double-click on that new playlist so that the playlist opens in a separate window.
In the main iTunes window, select the main library and then put iTunes in browser mode (View..Show Browser). Select the albums you want by control-clicking in the list. Drag the selection to a playlist (or playlist window). All the songs for those albums will be added to the playlist.
Then sync that playlist to your iPod. You can clear that playlist (or make another new playlist) and make new selections if that's what you want to do.

  • Syncing iPhone & iPod with different iTunes...

I need some help desperately...My iPhone is synced with iTunes on my laptop and my iPod is synced to iTunes on my home desktop. I am now junking my laptop and will therefore need to sync my iPhone on a new computer. My quandary is the following:
    1. Will all the pix, music on my iPhone get wiped out? What do I do to save them?
    2. Can I sync two separate products on the same iTune (that is, the one on my home desktop)?
    3. I am also planning to buy an iPad. Will that require me to download a separate iTunes or can I sync all the three products on the same iTunes?
Would really appreciate a solution. Many thanks in advance.

You should really read the manual:

  • Use 60GB iPod with laptop having only USB 1 ports?

I'd like to buy a 60GB iPod for use with a Compaq laptop having only USB I ports and no firewire. Is this possible? I know that the documentation mentions only the use of USB II. Is there a work-around? I

There are also USB2.0 PCMIA cards out there that should work unless someone has had some problems with that. As with any important computer where you have important documents, you should back up at least 1 or 2 times a month to once a week in my opinion. I have Iomega USB2.0 HDD (80 GB) that I back up my lap top to. It is really critical that you do so or you will find yourself without important family photos (we have almost 5 years worth of digital photos on our computers). I hope that also helps.

  • Home Share and iPhone/iPod sync

    Hey folks,
Question: can you use your shared playlists to sync an iphone/ipod with certain songs without copying the actual files locally? I have large library (90GB) that really won't fit on any of my computers' internal drives.
    Thanks,

can I sync my iphone and/or ipod touch with both computers or do I need to choose one?
You need to choose ONE computer. With home sharing, and the computer authorized, you can put content from both computers on your phone, but by design, the iphone syncs itunes content with one computer at a time.

  • In iTunes 11.0.2.26, an Albums search by track names returns albums as if they only have one track on them, but I still want to access the entire album. How can I have the search results show the entire album (with just the searched for name highlighted)?

    Hello, all.
In iTunes 11.0.2.26, an Albums search by track names returns albums as if they only have one track on them, but I still want to access the entire album. How can I have the search results show the entire album (with just the searched for name highlighted)? For instance, I'm wanting to play an album with a particular track on it or I'm searching for albums that include that track. iTunes incorrectly assumes that all I'm after is that one track and then incorrectly displays the album as if there is only one ttrack on it. This is a bonkers default setting. Can I change this?

Click the search magnifying glass and uncheck "Search entire library".
Type in the name of the track.
Click the album of interest to show tracks.
    Select the track.
Press the X in the search box to clear the search.
Double click the track you want to start playing first.

  • I have an iPhone 4 with legacy photos in a DCIM file from iPhone 3.  When I try to import to my PC only the photos taken on the iPhone 4 are available/appear.  How do I get the DCIM album to download?

I have an iPhone 4 with legacy photos from an iPhone 3 now stored as a DCIM file on the i/Phone 4.  When I try to download the photos to my PC only the photos taken with the iPhone 4 are recognized and downloaded.  I can still see all the photos on the DCIM file but my PC doesn't recognize them.  How do I download these old photos?

I've tried both ways.  My Computer locates the device but doesn't see the old photos, only listing the new photos.
I no longer have the iphone3; I just transferred the photos from the 3 to the 4.
Was there a format change or file type change or did the transfer process create something different?  I can still see and access the old photos if I go to that album on the phone.  But that's the only place where I can see them or access them.

Yes i've tried all of that. I've turned it all the way on and off and erased all of my music and put it back on and nothing works. And with the breaking up CDs and putting into compilation categories i have already fixed all of that stuff. It's fine it just doesn't show up in the list of artists. I can find the album in the songs category and the albums category it's just it doesn't show tha name of the artist. All of the other albums that i downloaded before i updated my itunes to th most recent update are fine. It's just the two that i downloaded afterwards. Thanks for trying though.

  • HT1386 My husband and I traded ipod with each other. Now, I am unable to put my entire library on the ipod. Only some songs imported. HELP

My husband and I exchanged ipods with each other. I attempted to import my whole music library to this current ipod. only certain songs imported. Not all. How do I get the WHOLE library to this ipod?

if I sign in my iTunes on my husband's computer, will it delete his iTunes library?
LOL!  If Home Sharing deleted the other person's library, then Home Sharing wouldn't have too many users, would it?
Seriously, Home Sharing sounds like a fine solution to the need you express.
However, your question suggests that your library is not backed up, right?  You and your husband should each make a backup of your libraries.

  • Anyone recommend best iTunes release for user with no iPhone/iPod touch?

After finally resolving some iPod restore issues - I am going to clean up my Windows install with a fresh install this weekend.
Just wonder what folks think about always using the latest iTunes if one does not have an iPhone/iTouch etc. As I gathered as much info as I could on the iTunes releases within the last year or so - it seems each release tends to add more overhead. Like more services suddenly appearing like the "mobile device" service being installed on top of the already RAM hungry core components.
When I first got this iPod for Xmas last year - and installed iTunes for the first time - the thing that struck me the most was watching iTunes guzzle 65MB of RAM just sitting there doing nothing (not even playing a track). After that eye-opener (and no change for the better over the last release which seem to use somewhere around 90MB in my last tests) - I simply reverted back to Winamp 5.35 as my actual player. It uses 4.5MB when minimized to the System Tray and I simply set it to scan the My Music folder - giving me the entire library with almost no overhead - I mean c'mon...90MB to just listen to some music?
So - if you are in this situation - 5.5g 80GB iPod with no iPhone, no iPod Touch and use iTunes simply to load/manage the iPod - what iTunes release (within the last year) would you recommend for the best balance of features/performance and least amount of background drain? I have read some have stuck with 7.2.3.6...good? Bad?
Another Q - if I was to go current - can one install the 7.5 package and then uninstall or disable that Mobile Service(or not even install it all at) when installing iTunes?
    Appreciate any comments!
    Cheers!
    VP

I don't recall there being any choices when it came to installing iTunes. I guess if there is an issue about the resources that iTunes is using, I would only start iTunes when I want to manage the music on the iPod. Otherwise, not start and/or minimize it, especially since you are using another software product to play music. I haven't started iTunes on my laptop today, and the iTunes helper is only using 1.9MB of memory right now. I'm using the latest version. I'll start up iTunes and give you a reply on how much it is using.
I just started iTunes and it is only using 31MB of RAM.
