Autofill problem with Shuffle

Did anyone ever figure out why the latest software update for the Shuffle makes the Autofill function of iTunes useless? Everytime I try and fill it, it just freezes iTunes. Any ideas?

Shannon,
I have the latest iTunes and iPod software installed and Autofill works just fine. However, I use Autofill with the Shuffle NOT plugged in -- once the Autofill is complete, then I plug in the Shuffle and let it update. Good luck.

  • Autofill Problem with iPod 1GB Shuffle

    I am running the latest version of iTunes. When I synch my 1GB Shuffle using 'autofill' and 'choose items randomly,' I often get 2-4 songs consecutively from one album, the 2-4 from another album, then maybe a couple of random artists/albums, then the pattern repeats itself. I have about 4,000 songs in my playlist so there's no way it could randomly keep choosing several songs from one album in a row, then do the same over and over with other albums. Do I have some box checked somewhere I shouldn't...or vice versa. It's very annoying so please help! TIA. jim

    That renames the iPod but we still have the problem of getting the right songs on to it. We have one playlist designated for the shuffle but it won't take the songs. What are we doing wrong?

  • Problems with shuffle gen. 2 not recognized by computer or itunes

    Hello to all who may help me solve my problem.
    I received a Gen. 2 Shuffle with 1GB several years ago, and used it over that time.  It has lasted longer than 2 laptops and I hate to throw it away if it isn't fixed or the problem isn't solved soon.
    I received a Win. 8 laptop as a gift two years ago, and now my laptop is not recognizing the shuffle.  The laptop is an ASUS model.
    Besides receiving the message "This device is not recognized by the computer," I researched and installed and uninstalled iTunes following all instructions I could find online.  I have iTunes 11.3.
    My biggest concern is the message I have after studying "hardware ids" in the device.  It reads "USB\DEVICE_DESCRIPTOR_FAILURE".  I have uninstalled all USB root hubs and rebooted several times.
    It works fine on my sister's computer.
    What steps would I take to fix it?
    Thanks for any help.

    I'm having the same problem (except this isn't a new shuffle).
    How do I "restart" an iPod shuffle?  I have it plugged into my MacBook Air via its dock but it's not recognized in iTunes.  iTunes does recognize my iPad (under Devices).  Yesterday the MBA recognized both devices.  I tried it also on iTunes on my Mini but no go there either.
    I've rebooted both machines.  No go.

  • I photo / i life '06, problems with 'shuffle', and duplicates ! ?

    hi.
    am using ilife '06... trying to 'shuffle' photos in a slideshow in iphoto.
    my 'help' function says to go to 'settings' and select 'shuffle'. (which was possible in the old iphoto)... BUT when i do so, i don't see a 'shuffle' bubble available to be checked off.
    ALSO
    in itunes, it's possible to elimate duplicate songs by pressing 'show duplicates', then deleting them. why doesn't this seem possible to do in iphoto?
    i can duplicate a photo, but not identify the duplicates, then delete them....

    To get a shuffle slideshow you need to select the album with your photos and then click on the Play button at right side of the bottom tool bar. It if doesn't show click on the >> button at the right to get to it. That will send to to
    the setting pane for that folder's slideshow. You can save the settings so you don't have to reset them each time. Then Option-clicking the play button will take you to directly to the slideshow, bypassing the settings pane.
    You can add and remove photos from the album and keep the slideshow settings.
    Do you Twango?
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Problem with shuffling tracks within playlists

    I'm having trouble shuffling songs within playlists.  I have an iPhone 5s with iOS 8.1.2.
    If I open a playlist and press 'Shuffle' (or the Shuffle icon) above the first song, nothing happens--the playlist will not play, and I'm unable to play any of the individual songs within the playlist (the songs in the list will gray-out briefly when clicking on them).
    If I start a playlist and try shuffling from the 'Now Playing' screen, only the current song will play.  For example, I hit 'Shuffle'--"Shuffle All' is highlighted but '1 of 41' becomes '1 of 1.'  If I then hit 'Shuffle All," '1 of 1' becomes '0 of 0.'
    Thus far, the only way I can shuffle a playlist is to ask Siri to do it (and she doesn't always understand the playlist names).
    Am I doing something wrong, or is there a bug here?
    Thanks.

    It seems to occur more frequently lately. You can still add songs by right-click < Add to Playlist, although this is not as convenient as drag-n-drop. Hopefully it will get fixed soon.

  • Problem with shuffling a playlist

    I made a playlist of holiday music. There are 361 songs on the list. When I play this playlist in order, the iPod shows there are 361 songs on it (songs display 1 of 361, 2 of 361, etc.) But when I turn on shuffle mode, suddenly there are only 66 songs. I can switch back to "normal" order and it's back to 361. I want to play the whole list in shuffle mode. Anyone know how to solve this one?

    That was it! Thank you!!!
    No problem.
    will it (1) only put on the iPod the music from the playlists I select, and delete everything else on the iPod
    The option you are referring to allows you to select particular artists, playlists, and genres. So what ever you choose to sync for each of these categories will sync to your iPod and yes, everything else that is not selected to sync will be erased.
    So if you only selected it to sync a couple of playlists and nothing from under the Artists or Genres categories, only the music in the playlists you select would sync to your iPod. Everything else would be removed. Hope that makes sense.
    or (2) sync those playlists automatically and let me manually manage the rest?
    You can either manually sync or automatically sync the iPod, not both. Sorry.
    I'm not sure any workaround that might make what you want possible. :S If you were, it would more than likely require that you copy the lower bitrate songs from your iPod back into iTunes and then reconfigure your sync settings as desired.

    The real files have to be available to iTunes (the USB HD has to be connected) otherwise Shuffle will "update" by erasing them. That's the way it is...

    A restore would have eliminated the possibility of software glitch/error so the problem is more than likely hardware related meaning you'll need to have the Shuffle serviced or replaced.

  • Problem with shuffle function

    My ipod Touch seems to be permanently in shuffle mode when playing songs.  How can I change this so that songs play in the correct order?
    Please note, this is not related to the "shake to shuffle" function - I know how that works.

    Just seen how to fix it in the "more like this" section.  Glad it's sorted as it was doing my head in.

  • Problem with Shuffle erased songs from library!!

    The Shuffle would not eject from within iTunes. I tried dragging it off the desktop to eject it that way and it would not budge. iTunes would not respond and when I tired to force-quit the program, it would not respond. The entire computer froze - very unusual under OSX...
    So I had to unplug the shuffle manually and then restart the computer. When I reattached the shuffle, it was blank - a known risk of unplugging a disc without properly ejecting it. I was not too upset cuz it was only 30 songs on one playlist (the shuffle's own play list). I figured I could rebuild it.
    No prob, right? Well that is what I though. When I got home later that night, I went into iTunes to reload songs onto the shuffe. There had be 30 songs, but I could remember only about 10, so I went into iTunes library to find the songs in order to put back onto the shuffe, but they were GONE from the library. Even the iTunes songs I had bought were gone, no longer listed even in the Purchased Music playlist. And the songs were not in the iTunes Musc folder... they are gone completely. Apparently, the manual unplugging of the shuffle and the restart of the computer erased the songs NOT ONLY from the shuffle, but the entire library too. Isn't that strange?!?
    I have Apple's Backup program, and I back up my library every 4 weeks, but I was just about to do another backup this week, so if I choose to restore, I would lose everying I have gotten since the last back up, so that is not really an option.
    Once a month or so, I copy the entire iTunes library over to my external hard disk, so I have been able to get some of the purchaced iTunes songs from there (better than a condensed backup because you can pick individual songs without having to do a restore on the entire file - which would erase anything added since the last backup).
    I just wish I could remember what songs I had on the shuffle...
    Has anyone ever heard of this? I know that manually unplugging any hard disk or USB drive without first ejecting it, has risks, included the loss of the data on the disk/drive, but have you hever heard of not only the shuffle, but ALSO the library being erased?!?

    Hi Patrick,
    You don't need to know the name of the songs that you have lost because all music purchased from iTunes has the same file extension. So if you search for the file extension, all the purchased music on your HD will show up like this:
    So just do a search for ".m4p" (Not including the quotation marks) and your purcased music should show up.

  • Problems with Shuffle()

    Hi, I'm trying to randomly arrange the numbers from 1-10 in a list - but my code doesn't work.
    I'm sure it's something simple - but just can't get it!
    Thanks for any help.
    import java.util.*;
    public class Shuffler
         List list = new ArrayList();
         public void main(String[] args)
              for (int i=1; i<=10; i++)list.add(new Integer(i));
              Collections.shuffle(list);
              System.out.print(list);
    }

    And if you do you must also declare the List staticso
    they both are in a static context.How do I declare a list to be static?put the word "static" in front of the declaration you already have.
    On the other hand, if the list is only going to exist for the life of the main method, you could move the declaration of the list inside of main (and then the list would not be static).

  • Answer to problem of shuffle not working on windows

    I had all the problems I have seen posted on the boards. Windows not recognizing shuffle, then I-tunes not recognizing it, trouble updating, transfering files, on and on.
    i did everything advised, reloaded itunes and updater several times updated the shuffle. nothing worked
    i thougth it was problems with shuffle/windows. I got my shuffle from audible.com for signing up for 6 months. i sent one shuffle back, got a replacement. same story. then i talked them into sending me another one although i did not think this would work. Guess what! worked first time right out of box, no problems at all.
    So basically 2 shuffles were defective. the Audible help guys said that a big lot of defective shuffles were sent out. not on purpose i assume but nontheless.
    So my advise if you have this option is to bring it back, and get another one. that may be easier said than done but if you have a shuffle that does not work it is probably defective

    I had problems with my shuffle playing audible files. Went to an Apple Store and they replaced the shuffle. Still wouldn't play the file. Downloaded a format 4 Audible Earshot and was able to play that fine. Down loaded my book again in format 3 and that played fine. I think it's a file size issue. I was able to play format 3 up to 60meg file but a format 4 89 meg file would not play. Anybody out there have a format 4 60meg file. My shuffle will play the smaller format 4 files so it's able to read a format 4. I've been able to play a format 3 up to 60meg (the largest I have). I have a iPod video and it's able to play the audible files fine so the file isn't corrupt. I can play the file off my Shuffle using iTunes fine again it points to the file is fine on the Shuffle but it can't handle the large file. If I have music files in front of the audible file they play fine but once it hits the audible file nothing works and I have to reset the Shuffle by power cycling.

  • I have iPod shuffle 2nd gen. 1GB, how can I autofill it with more than 70 songs?

    I have iPod shuffle 2nd gen. 1GB, how can I autofill it with more than 70 songs, when I used to be able to get more than l20+ songs?

    Is your shuffle full after the Autofill?  Does the playlist you selected as the source have more than 70 songs?
    My 2nd gen 1GB shuffle currently has 140 songs on it, almost 100% full using Autofill.  The number of songs depends on two factors.  One is the average length of the songs.  Longer songs take more space.  A 20-minute symphony takes more space than a 4-minute pop song.  The other key factor is the bit rate used for compression.
    All of my songs are compressed using the AAC encoder at 256 kbps, which is Apple's current standard and the setting used for downloads from the iTunes Store.  The same songs compressed at 128 kbps AAC takes up half the space.  320 kbps MP3 would use more space per song.  If a lossless format, such as Apple Lossless or AIFF is used to encode, the sound quality is the best possibe, but the file size per song is MUCH higher.
    If you think there is problem on the shuffle, you can try doing a Restore in iTunes.  The Restore button is on the shuffle's Settings tab.  This will erase the shuffle, re-install its software, and set it to default settings. If there is data corruption on the shuffle's storage that is causing this problem, a Restore should fix it.
