Autoflow Text makes boxes ON TOP of master linked boxes (IDCS3)

Using CS 3 version 5.0.4 on G5 Mac with OS 10.4.11
Adobe's instructions say:
"Flow text automatically
" With the loaded text icon displayed, hold down Shift as you do one of the following:
Click the loaded text icon in a column to create a frame the width of that column. InDesign creates new text frames and new document pages until all text is added to the document.
Click inside a text frame that is based on a master text frame. The text autoflows into the document page frame and generates new pages as needed, using the master frame’s attributes."
I am trying to import text into a book.  I have formatted a master page spread and applied it to one document page.  When I follow option 2 above ID is creating the requisite number of pages, it is creating full-page text boxes ON TOP of the text boxes from the Master page. It is completely ignoring the text frames based on the Master page.
I have sent my document and text to a friend who is working in ID CS 4.  When he does the same thing it imports into the formatted frames.
How can I get this to work properly?
John

Michael,
It should be left to right. I must be dyslexic late at night. Sorry.
The two masters is one facing pages master for the bulk of the book, then a second master for chapter openers with a dropped frame, chapter title frame, or some other "special" condition that you don't want appearing in general. I may have misunderstood what the OP meant by "different."
The requirement for two pages is only if they are based on different masters (and after some playing, apparently perhaps only if the masters aren't based on one another in the order they are used). Here's the scenario:
Page 1 is a chapter opener with a dropped frame, and the rest of the pages need to be full height, so you create two master spreads, one for the opener and one for the main pages. The chapter opener master (call it A) can be either a single or two-page master, and can be configured with different height frames on either side if you wish. Normally one would assign Master A to page 1, then the second master (call it B) to pages 2 through the end of the chapter, so you add two pages to the document, the first based on A, and the second based on B.
If you try to autoflow starting on page one one of two things will happen, depending on the relationship between the masters (this is based on testing in CS4, but I have no reason to think it would be different in CS3): If there is no relationship between the masters, or if A is based on B (that is the based on relationship is not in the same order that the pages appear in the document), autoflow will jump over page 2 (and any following pages based on any master not based on A) and create new pages based on A to place the text that doesn't fit on page 1.
If Master B is is based on A, then autoflow will use the pages based on it, but will switch back to making pages based on master A when it adds new pages. If A is based on B.
If you place text only into page 1 (either by not holding a modifier key or holding the Alt [Opt] key for semi-autoflow to keep the cursor loaded), then move to page 2 and hold the shift key to autoflow starting on that page, ID will add new pages based on the master used on page 2.
On the other hand, if you DON"T use master text frames, ID will autoflow through all available pages, using the margin and column guides, and then add new pages based on the master for page 1(and this is different from what I had remembered -- I thought it would add pages based on the last page in the document), so if you don't have enough pages in the doc already, and page 1 is different from the following page, you still want to start the autoflow on page 2.

  • How to place a word document that autoflows text boxes onto every other page?

Is there a way to place a word document into InDesign that autoflows text boxes onto every other page?
    Example
page 1 from word doc imports to page 1 in indesign,
page 2 from word doc imports to page 3 in indesign,
page 3 from word doc imports to page 5 in indesign, etc.
Than, take a different word doc and import to the even pages of the same indesign document,
    Example
page 1 from word doc#2 imports to page 2 in indesign,
page 2 from word doc#2 imports to page 4 in indesign,
page 3 from word doc#2 imports to page 6 in indesign, etc.
    Thanks

I don't import Word docs... but I don't think there is a simple 1-click solution.
You probably need to set up a facing pages document with a master text frame on each.
Create the pages you need and link the left text frames to each other and the right to each other.
Importing should work from there however not sure how the page-break works (if you have that set-up in Word).

  • Top of text box moves up when typing new text exceeds box width.

Using iWork 09 I set a text box on a master and mark it as Format/Advanced/Define as text placeholder. In the Text Inspector, I set parameters as left justified, align text to bottom, line spacing = 1, and other numerical parameters to 0. Then, on a new slide using this master, the top of the text box moves up to accommodate additional text and it would be seem more natural for the bottom of the box to extend DOWN instead.  What am I missig here?

it would be seem more natural for the bottom of the box to extend DOWN instead.  What am I missig here?
No it wouldnt. If you understand that, align to bottom, fixes the last character in the bottom line to the bottom right hand corner of the text box, the text then flows from that corner as you add extra text.
You cant have align to bottom and have the text flow from the top, you need to choose between the three options.
If you want to add extra lines without the box moving; use align to top.
If you want to align the text to the bottom of the box; use align to bottom.
I set parameters as left justified,
There is no such thing as left justified.   You need to choose between justified or left align, these are two different alignment methods, text is either left aligned, right aligned or justified, not a combination of them.

  • How can I make what a user types in text entry box go to the lms?

    Hi,
I have a couple text entry boxes for non-scored short answer responseses---more of a reflective exercise than anything else.
However, I'd like the text the learner types to be recorded by the LMS.
How do I make that happen if it is not an actual assessment?
    thanks

Each TEB gets automatically an associated variable with a generic name that is the same as the TEB (I always recommend choosing a more appropriate name). Lookin the General Accordion, you'll see the Variable field.

  • How to make mutiple shortcut keys in one text entry box

I'm trying to make F8 and Enter work in one text entry box and only one because I need to make the scoring work the way I want it to. I have made both F8 and Enter work, however they are both in seperate text entry boxes when I want both to work in the same text entry box... Please Help, this will solve alot of problems I've been having.

Ok so I tried using advanced actions and failed... here's my attempt on putting 2 shortcuts in one text entry box with different entries like the problem described earlier on this thread:
Note: I have 2 TEB in one slide I tried using in this action.. 1 has variable name PF8, the other has PF82, where I'm trying to have PF82 contain both actions of both TEBs.
    1. Went into advanced actions.
    2. Action name: Linking2inone
    3. Made it a conditional action.
    4. In "IF" attempted to use both any and all conditions are true
    5. Also in "IF" PF82 contains PF8
    6. Actions Jump to Slide 11
    7. updated action successfully.
Then I closed advanced actions. I tried making the PF8 TEB have "no action" when correct and tested it... didn't work... then I made PF8 TEB have Jump to slide 11 when correct, cut and pasted it to another slide because I thought that PF8 TEB as a seperate TEB in the same slide was messing with the Advanced Action I'm trying to perform. Therefore, since PF8 was just in another slide, PF8 wouldn't be deleted still having the same action value in advanced actions having PF82 contain the action of PF8; but this failed as well...

  • Text Entry Box Always On Top Captivate 7

I have a Captivate 7 slide that has nine text entry boxes all grouped together.
I've used advanced actions to show another group contained within my slide but when the second group is opened it sits beneath the text entry boxes (see screen grab).
Is the most efficient way to prevent this to hide the text entry boxes when I show the second group and subsequently show them again when the second group is hidden?
My project is going to be published using HTML5 output.
Thanks in advance for taking the time to read my question.

Hi Lilybiri, here is the advanced action that is triggered when a hotspot (click1) on the main slide is clicked. The second line to hide the text_entry_fields group is what I've added to solve the problem but I'd be happoer if this particular line wasn't necessary.
    Here is the timeline:
Once the rugbyPop is closed by clicking Button_153 this advanced action is triggered:

  • Text entry boxes in CP6 - Enter key to validate input does not work in Safari?

I'm using Captivate 6 to create a step by step walkthrough of some different processes that are commonly completed in my workplace. Some of the example processes have portions where text is entered to simulate a process the end user might need.  I have text entry boxes in these slides that require validation of the input to move along, with Enter used as a shortcut key. This works great in Firefox, Chrome and IE all the way down to 8....but if the course is run in Safari, the enter key does nothing.  Is this a known issue?
Additional info: For many of these text entry boxes, the point is that it is a search field that has a little binoculars icon next to it that executes the search in the actual software we are simulating. For these slides I actually have the submit button associated with the text box made invisible (no fill, no stroke) and placed on top of the binoculars icon. This is an acceptable method of doing the task we're demonstrating, and just so happens to be a workaround for the enter key not working in Safari. However, a few places we have text entry that doesn't have the search/binocular icon next to it because there is a different goal on that section of the software we're visualizing. In those cases, there is no place for me to put an invisible submit button, and I can't make the submit button visible because that's not how the software we're demonstrating would work (thus defeating the purpose of the training).

Sorry, this is a known bug with no fix available yet, but the makers of SwiftKey are aware of it and we will work with them to fix it: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=617298
For now, the only solution is to use a different keyboard when using Firefox.

  • Text Entry Boxes and their content not being captured in Automatic Recording

I have searched the forums here and elsewhere extensively and whilst I have found people with similar issues, I have yet to find a solution. My problem is this:
I am trying to record myself using a piece of software which contains numerous text fields. In the past, when using Captivate 3, I would simply fill out these fields and Captivate would record my entries automatically. When the project was played back, the training simulation would pause and allow the user to type in the text field and provided the entry matched the options I had defined, the simulation would continue to the next step.
So, my colleague and I have since bought Adobe Tech. Comms. Suite 2 and have upgraded Captivate 3 to version 4. Ever since doing this we have both been unable to successfully capture text entry boxes with their content when recording automatically in any mode. We have checked and triple checked the settings to make sure that the automatic capture of text entry in fields is turned on yet we still cannot get Captivate to perform this task it once so easily could. We both suffer from the same problem on both of our installations of Captivate 4. We have tried recording in all modes with no success.
I am tearing my hair out as I need to come up with some sample content for a major Governmental client which would be worth a 5 figure sum to my company and I really don't relish having to manually create every text entry box as there are a LOT of them in this application!
I have also reported this as a bug to Adobe using the correct form. As yet, no response.
I would really appreciate any genuine help that can be offered by you guys.
    In desperation,
    Rob.

Ok, I think I've sussed it!
I've been pulling my hair out for weeks on this and after posting on here, I decided to try something and I think I may have found the problem.
I work with a laptop as I am a Trainer and therefore quite mobile. When I'm in the office, I dock my laptop and use the Extended Desktop functionality of Windows so I have my laptop screen and a second 19" monitor which i find incredibly useful as screen real estate is always at a premium. And this is where I believe the problem lies.
I performed a simple test and have repeated this test with identical outcomes everytime. Here is what I did. I fired up Captivate and Outlook and opened up a new mail window in Outlook. I then set Captivate to record the new mail window and hit record. I typed some text into the To field and the Subject field and then stopped the recording. I then previewed the results. When the new mail window was on my primary screen, (i.e the laptop) the Text Entry Box recording worked 100% fine. However, if the new mail screen was residing on my secondary screen, i.e. the monitor, the Text Entry Box recording failed!
So it would seem that Captivate 4 has an issue with seeing the text entered on a secondary monitor when Windows is running in Extended Desktop mode. I am absolutely certain this wasn't an issue with Captivate 3 as I created plenty of content without any of these problems and I was using the Extended Desktop back then.
So, if anyone else is having the same issue, and you are running an Extended Desktop, try what I did above.
In the meantime, I am raising this issue with Adobe in the hope they can get this fixed, but at least now I can carry on with my content creation
    Regards,
    Rob.

  • Text Click box not working when using back button on playbar

    I have an interstesting situation.
I have a slide that has 2 text clickboxes (Slide B)
Each text click box has an advanced action associated that controls what is displayed on the next slide (Slide C) . The click boxes and the advanced actions work just fine except for the following situation:
The learner is on Slide C and uses the 'back button' on the playbar to return to the slide where the two text click boxes are (Slide B), then the click boxes don't seem to work.
However if the learner goes back one additional slide, the slide before slide B (let's call that one slide A) and the continues from Slide A to Slide B, then the click boxes on Slide B work again.
Can't figure out why that is?
has anyone come across this issue before?

Not for native Captivate interactive objects that suffer with this limitation.  There are interactive widgets such as the Infosemantics Event Handler that have preference options to Reset Success/Fail Criteria After Action.
You could download a trial version and give that a go:
    http://www.infosemantics.com.au/adobe-captivate-widgets/download-free-trial-widgets
You can attach this widget to any kind of screen object to make that object interactive.

  • Text Entry Box not showing all text

I am creating a simple exercise where I would like the user to copy text from the course, paste it into word, and report back what the word count is.  I thought perhaps the Text Entry Box would be the best way to go, since if you click on the existing (default) text, you can copy it.  However after I place the paragraph of text in the box, and resize in the editor so that all the text shows, it does not show all the text when playing back, either previewd or published.  It only shows the last few words of the last line at the top of the box.
Is there something I am missing?  Or, is there an easier/better way to do what I need?
    Thanks

    Hi all
If this is Captivate 4, there may not be any need for a widget to do this. I'm guessing you haven't tried enabling the Scroll Bar for the Text Entry Box (TEB)?
When I just plop a TEB on a slide, I get this in edit view:
During playback it looks like this:
But if I edit the TEB properties and enable the Show Scrollbar option:
I get this in the output:

  • Text Entry Box not working right??

This is strange…. If anyone has any thoughts…
    that would be great.
I have a slide that tests someone's knowledge for inputting
into a text entry box. I want to give them 2 tries for doing this
task - and if they don't perform the task correctly, I want an
error message to display. However, I want the error message to be
different based on the 1st time that they try and the second time.
The method to accomplish this.. I have done many times, and has
always worked. However, for some reason, it's not working this
    time.
In order to customize the error message based on whether it's
the 1st try or the second - I have created 2 text entry boxes.
The first text entry box is set to display at 0 seconds, is
set to display for 2 seconds and is set to pause after 1.5 seconds.
If the user enters a successful text entry the user will be
navigated to the next slide, if the user enters an incorrect text
entry they will continue on the same slide and a failure caption is
selected to display (this is the first error message that displays
    for the first try.)
The second text entry box is set to display at 2 seconds, is
set to display for 2 seconds and is set to pause after 1.5 seconds.
If the user enters a successful text entry the user will be
navigated to the next slide, if the user enters an incorrect text
entry they will continue on the same slide. No failure caption is
selected to display. This is the important point... I have not
selected for a failure caption to display for this text entry box.
I have a text caption that displays at 4 seconds - this is
the second error message that the user will see if they input an
incorrect text entry into the second text entry box.
Everything seems to work fine except... for some reason, when
I enter an incorrect text entry into the second text entry box, I
get the failure message that I set for the first text entry box.???
Very strange. I have recreated this 3 times - each time it works.
Then, all of a sudden, it stops working. I’ve even tried
recreating the movie from scratch… but same results.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Lynn

    Hi again
Okay, makes sense. I suppose in this case, I'd simply use
another slide. From what you have explained, it would appear there
is a possible issue Captivate is having with multiple text entry
    boxes on the same slide.
So I would insert a slide following the existing slide. Then
on failure of the first text entry box, direct to the next slide.
On success of the first text entry box, skip over the new slide to
    the proper "continue" slide.
    Hopefully that makes sense... Rick

  • Conditional for a text input box NOT being null? Sorry for asking so many questions!

Okay, here's the situation. I'm creating a simulation of a form on which there are several text input boxes, 7 of which are mandatory fields. I know I can use a conditional to check whether the box has nothing in it by creating a null variable with no value and doing "if [box variable] is equal to [null variable] then", but the problem is that the validation captions I need to show need to be shown in order, that is to say that the caption for entering a value for the first box will always be shown if that box is null regardless of the contents of other boxes, the second will be shown if that one is null and the first one isn't etc.
When I was investigating this I noticed a post by Lilybiri saying that comparison with a null variable doesn't work for "not equal to" so I'm having a hard time figuring out how to show the captions based on priority. For example, to show the second caption I need to not only check whether the second box variable is null, but also whether the first one isn't.
It gets pretty crazy further along the line where I get to the 7th mandatory field and need to check whether the first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth boxes are NOT null and whether the 7th one IS. Help!
I did come up with one potential solution to this prior to posting: if I set a different advanced action for each input box losing focus which checks whether the variable is null and if so sets a "flag" variable to 0, and in the else set it to 1, I imagine I can then replace the "not equal to" with a check to that flag variable being equal to 1 (which means there is text in the box). I think this will work but I thought I'd check to see if there's an easier way first.

No it DOESN'T require everything to be on one slide.  It just has to LOOK as if that's what it is.
I would suggest that it doesn't really matter how many Captivate slides are involved in the final solution, as long as it works the same way (or as close as possible) to the original software that you are simulating.  Your users don't frankly know or care how you achieved the simulation.  I guarantee they won't be thinking of you or Captivate.
In my experience, you can make creating elearning a lot more difficult than it needs to be in Captivate by trying to rebuild the app, rather than just simulating how it works. For example, thinking that if everything happened on one web page or screen in the app then it must also happen on a single slide in Captivate.  The fact of the matter is IT DOESN'T need to work this way.  And in some cases it might even be impossible to reproduce in Captivate this way.
So the quickest path to a solution is often to use multiple slides, which has the advantage of allowing you to "fix" certain things on screen (e.g. the contents of fields already visited) by using READ ONLY variable output in transparent captions, focusing only on one element of the interface that the user can interact with on that slide.  It doesn't necessarily prevent you from moving back and forth between elements, just as you can in the original app.  But it is far easier to create and maintain.
I'm not saying you wouldn't be able to pull this off on one slide in Captivate, but it is going to require a LOT of variables and Advanced Actions to build and debug.  So the term Rapid Elearning becomes something of a misnomer if it takes you a long time to complete one slide.

  • Text Entry Box--Advanced Actions--Conditional Statement--Double quotes in literal input value

    Hello forums,
I'm new to the forums (and Captivate in general), but I'm having a real problem carrying out a tutorial design and I think you may be my only hope.  Let me explain what I want to do and the difficulty that I'm having:
I'm an instruction librarian at a university, and I'm designing an interactive tutorial for English 100 students to complete in order to become familiar with how to search the library catalog.  What I've done is taken a screenshot of the catalog search page, made it the background of a slide in Captivate (vers. 6), and placed a text entry box over the search bar in the screenshot.  The idea is for the students to conduct a simulated search by choosing one of three suggested search string formulations, and depending on the search string they enter, the tutorial will jump to a slide featuring a screenshot of what the actual search results would look like.  The idea is to emphasize the use of keywords over full-sentence phrases, and the use of double quotation marks to enclose multi-word search terms.
So I've set the action for the TEB to "Execute Advanced Actions" and then created some IF/THEN statements in the "Advanced Actions" pop-up window (with action type set to 'conditional'). The script is such that if the student enters the first search option (how does sleep affect college students) in the TEB, the tutorial jumps to 1 slide, if they enter the second option (college students AND sleep), featuring a Boolean operator (AND), the tutorial jumps to a 2nd slide, and if they enter the third option ("college students" AND sleep) with the double quotes around "college students" and the Boolean operator, the tutorial should jump to a 3rd slide.  This action script works fine for the first two input options, but I can't make it work for the third search option.
I think that it has something to do with the fact that the third input option features double quote marks, and this seems to throw off the script (I tried a quote-less input value for the third IF/THEN just to make sure that it would work jumping to the 3rd slide and it did), and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to how I can get around this issue.  Again, I need it to work so that if the student enters "college students" AND sleep, with the quote marks and the Boolean operator, the tutorial will jump to a slide showing the search results if those search terms were used in a real search of the catalog.
I'd be extremely grateful for any help that anyone here can give me, we've been trying to make our online tutorials more engaging and interactive (and therefore more interesting), and I think this would be a great way to teach students about using quotes in their catalog searches.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
    Andrew Wilk
    College Library
    UW-Madison

The tutorial is for a "how to use catalog searching" instruction in an undergraduate library session.  We use boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) to combine search terms, ex. to search for books about the sleeping habits of college students, I would enter "college students AND sleep."  Because "college students" is a multi-word phrase to describe one concept, I need to put quotation marks around the phrase to prevent the catalog from searching for the individual words separately, so the most correct search becomes ["college students" AND sleep] with quotation marks around only "college students," a user-typed "AND," and the word "sleep" (no q-marks).
A colleague of mine worked out a pretty cool (if complicated) solution that I'll share if anyone is interested.  Since the q-marks where the problem, we've set it up so that the TEB validates the response for the search string with q-marks around "college students." If they enter it correctly, the tutorial jumps to the corresponding slide. The attempt # is set to 1, and if the user fails to enter the validated phrase (they misspell or use one of the other response options) then the TEB is set to run an Advanced Actions Script in which the other two options are scripted in IF/THEN statements that cause, when the term is entered correctly, the tutorial to jump to their corresponding slides. We've created another tab of IF/THEN statements that say that if the response is NOT equal to one of these response options, then the slide restarts (technically the slide "jumps" back to itself and starts over) and the user gets another chance to start the cycle over again.
I know this is confusing (I had a really hard time explaining it in words), so if anyone is interested I could make a Jing video when I have some time.
Thank you for all your suggestions

  • Text input boxes

How can I make text input boxes in a JApplet so I can specify there location. I want to make input boxes in certain locations on the applet.

Do you know about layout managers? If not:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/layout/using.html
If you for some reason don't trust a layout manager to do the job for you, you can specify where you want to put things yourself by doing something like this:
    JApplet applet = ...
applet.getContentPane().setLayout(null);  // Do not use a Layout Manager (generally a Bad Idea)
    JTextField input = new JTextField();
input.setBounds(50, 75, 25, 100);  // Sets the position and size of your textfield
applet.getContentPane().add(input);This is generally not recommended though, because different screen resolutions, cross-platform issues, any other things, might screw things up for you.
    ps.
A little advice: try to be a little more patient the next time. You shouldn't start flaming the forum just because no one happens to answer your question within an hour . The people here are under no obligation whatsoever to help you -- they do it of their own free will in their own spare time.

  • Text input boxes same colour as background - so "invisible", and button text or buttons often missingt

I have turned off all addons/extensions/plugins - still the same problem:
1: Text input boxes appear to be the same colour as the background - and hence "invisible"
2: Clickable buttons on websites are often invisible, or if they display have no text; e.g. button to right of google search ("go" button?) is seen as a plain box with no text - although button is clickable.
3: Google webpage usually has an image - this is missing, and merely has "UK" to the top left of the input box.
4: On this page for example I can see directly above this text box two vertical black lines - it appears to be a button with a pop-up "insert a link" - it can obviously be clicked when I mouse over it.
