Autofocus not working

I don't know if it's the new ios7 or not, but I've noticed that the autofocus is not working well on the camera now.  I've tested it, captured video and pics showing the problems and went to the apple store.  Great help there, they said to post up a discussion.  I'd like to think that it's an issue they know about and acknowledge it as a problem.
Capturing photos and videos of my kids is very important for me.  Now I have to worry that every shot is going to be ruined by this issue.  NOT HAPPY HERE APPLE!!!  ALL CAPS.

Hi marcosochoa!
amphoto1 makes some very valid points, and it does sound like it could  be the motor in the lens. We have found that sometimes we're able to remedy this without a costly repair, but it is a multi-stepped process.
Try this:
Take the lens off of your camera.
Put the lens in MF mode.
Twist the FOCUS ring (the tip of the lens) all the way to one side (extend it). You may hear a click noise or two, this is good, but don't FORCE the lens.
Twist the FOCUS ring all the way to the opposite side (retract it). Again, you may hear a couple of clicking noises. What we hope is happening is the focusing motor being put back into its proper place.
Put the lens back on the camera.
Put the lens in AF mode.
Turn the camera on.
Put the camera in AUTO or P mode.
Take a test photo.
Profit.
Hopefully this solves your problems, and you never have to worry about it again! With my personal lenses that are not USM or STM, I always store and transport them with the AF/MF switch in the MF position. This disengages the focusing motor and prevents any accidental damage to the auto focusing motor.

Since you bought it a "guy", you may be in for more unpleasant surprises.  Many of the iPhones sold through private parties are stolen, and can't be used.  Assuming that's not the case...you can make an appointment with an Apple genius, and have the IMEI and serial number checked.  The Genius can tell you what the original carrier was.  You can then check with the carrier about unlocking it.  If it is unlocked, you can use any GSM carrier.

  • Rebel x3i (600D) autofocus not working in Creative Zone mode. Works okay in the Basic modes.

I bought a Canon refurbished x3i from Canon last Summer after my Ritz Camera extended warranty became useless and my xTi (400D) died. The camera has been excellent until very recently.
About a week or so ago, the autofocus stopped working. I think it started when I decided to try the Canon refurbished 50mm 1.8 lens I bought off the internet. It didn't work for that lens and hasn't worked in Creative Zone since.
There is an asterisk (*) in the lower left corner of the viewfinder. This is an AE progress indicator. There are no active Focus Points. Sometimes, all nine of them will light up, but it doesn't mean anything.
Based on responses to other forum posts, I have tried different EOS lenses (I have two Rebel film cameras) and I have tried LiveView. Same problem. I can live with the situation, but, obviously, I would rather not.
    Naturally, Manual Focus works fine.
The pins on the camera look and feel fine - no bends or broken tips. The pins on the lenses look fine, too, even the 50mm.
(I haven't contacted Canon, yet, because after-the-sale guarantees are usually 30-90 days, but I will contact them tomorrow)
    Solved!

I don't think you are getting the camera cleared and reset.  You MUST clear all settings.  It sounds like you have focus lock set to ON.

  • T1i F00 and Autofocus Not Working

My camera has been fully functional since buying it when the T1i came out. About 3 days ago, I decided that my lens REALLY needed a cleaning.Like my glasses, solutions were just smearing the oils around, so I took my lens to the sink with soap. I was not as careful as I should have been, as I did not believe that just a little water would getinside of the lens through areas that seemed pretty tight.I didn't just dowse the lens in water, just put the glass lens itself under some light droplets and soaped up with my finger. Well, water got inside and caused my camera to be able to take pictures, but would give me : "Err 01 - Communications between the camera and the lens" So finally, I did fix this.I had to let everything dry, leave a fan on it, blow duster inside, etc. It still did not work.I had to open the lens and I pulled out two wires that looked a little dirty for some reason.I cleaned the wires, though I did not see the reason for why that would really be the problem, and vwallah, it worked again. My problem now, my auto focus, since cleaning those wires, does NOT work. I am also seeing on my screen, F00, instead of F4, etc or whatever it is (I am still no camera expert)It is the second number between ISO and the first number like 1/50 The other wires are not really built to grab and pull out, so I was trying to wait for this step, but if the autofocus was working before hand, then it should still work now. Any ideas?

When you say "focus" I'm wondering if you are referring to the zoom range?
The focus should be fairly even across the entire field. Technically image quality for any lens is usually a tiny bit better toward the center and a tiny bit degraded toward edges (and high end lenses do a better job of controlling this). Performance will also vary even within a zoom lens based on where you are in the zoom range (focal length range) and focal ratio.
If an optical element were to somehow become askew (I suppose a lens would need to receive a pretty good hit to do that) then it can produce a non-flat field where one side of the field is in focus and it goes out of focus on the other side (and this could happen in any direction -- including diagonally.)
The image sensor within the camera has adjustable shims -- but factory adjustable. These normally never need any adjustment once set by the factory. A moderately well-known incident happened in the photography community when Nikon had a factory calibration target which was not properly set up and an entire range of serial numbers was shipped to consumers with the sensor out of adjustment -- causing imaging to be out of focus on one side of the field (Nikon had more than one line doing calibrations ... so not every camera was affected... just every camera that was adjusted through that particular focus calibration target.) To my knowledge, Canon has never had such an incident.
If you are looking for a lens with a broader zoom range, Canon makes an EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (and now they make a new IS STM version.) The lenses with the "STM" suffix have Canon's new stepper motor. The motor is faster and quieter than the original motors, but also most of these lenses have had their optics improved. The STM lenses tend to cost about $50 more than the non-STM version of the same lens, but are well worth the extra $50 in terms of optical performance and focus performance.
Canon also makes an EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. These are sometimes called "super-zoom" lenses because the zoom range is so broad (there's more than a 10x difference from 18mm to 200mm). All lenses are a game of trade-offs. The advantage of owning a camera that has removeable lenses is that you can remove one and attach another which is more optimal for the task you want.
Lenses that do not zoom (also called "prime" lenses) can be well-optimized for their focal length and usually offer a substantially lower focal ratio (which means they gather a LOT more light and can also provide a narrower depth of field).
Zoom lenses with less ambitious zoom ranges... where the smaller number divides into the larger number only 3 times... perhaps 4... such as a 24-70mm or a 70-200mm ... tend to be able to achieve better optical quality.
The super-zooms tend not do as well in optical quality (the Canon 18-200 does well in the lower half of the range but the optical quality degrades slightlyl as you get to the longer end. The optical quality from an 18-200mm will not be able to compete with the optical quality of a 70-200mm when making the comparison near the 200mm end.
If you're looking to replace your 18-55 with something that offers a bit more range, then the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM is probably one of the best options. I would probably select that above the 18-200mm.
If someone tells me they are going on a vacation and they only have room to bring a single lens... then the 18-200mm wins out due to the convenience of the range.

  • Autofocus not working. (18-55mm lens)

    Hello,
The autofocus on my Canon 18-55mm is malfunctioning and I'm afraid it may be broken.
All the internet research I've done points to issues electronic, but I believe this to be mechanical simply because of the noise it makes. With the lens set to AF, it does nothing, but makes a slight whirring sounds as if the camera is trying to, but can't focus the lens. In MF, turning the focus ring makes soft clicking sounds.
The autofocus works fine on the other lens I have.
The lens has not been dropped. I take really, REALY good care of my stuff!  Any other recommendations or bits of advice are much appreciated!

One thing you can try is to reset (reboot) your iPad.  Hold both the Home and Sleep buttons for several seconds until the Apple logo appears.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" arrow.  The iPad will restart after a couple of minutes.  Resetting this way will not hurt anything, and sometimes clears up mysterious problems.
If that does not help, your iPad may be defective.  If it is in warranty, show it to an Apple Store Genius.  If the Genius can not fix it, you may get a replacement iPad on the spot.
If your warranty has expired, or there is no Apple Store near you, look for an Apple Authorized Repair Center.  There may be one in your city.  <Apple Authorized Repair Centers>

  • Iphone 5 camera is not working soon after I downloaded ios7.  Camera is frozen and shows a blur picture.

    Hi Apple,
Can you tell me if there's a reason for my camera not working on my iphone 5.
Soon after downloading ios7 , the camera's front picture has frozen and shows
blurred picture . The app itself is frozen also  , can't bring up photos from photo album .
Also I reset the phone and still the camera is not working .
please advise me as what to do next .
    Regards.

    Hi Patoraffo,
I understand that you are having issues with the Camera app functioning, I found the following information that may provide a resolution:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
    Camera is not functioning
    - If the screen shows a closed lens or black image, force quit the Camera app.
    - If you do not see the Camera app on the Home screen, try searching for it in Spotlight. If the camera does not show up in the search, check to make sure that Restrictions are not turned on by tapping Settings > General > Restrictions.
    - Ensure the camera lens is clean and free from any obstructions. Use a microfiber polishing cloth to clean the lens.
    - Third-party cases can interfere with the autofocus/exposure feature and the flash (iPhone 4 only); try removing the case if you have image-quality issues with photos.
    - Try turning iPhone off and then back on.
    - Tap to focus the camera on the subject. The image may pulse or briefly go in and out of focus as it adjusts.
    - Try to remain steady while focusing:
              - Still images: Remain steady while taking the picture. If you move too far in any direction, the camera automatically refocuses to the center. Note: If you take a picture with iPhone turned sideways, it is automatically saved in landscape orientation.
              - Video: Adjust focus before you begin recording. After recording begins, you cannot readjust focus until you stop recording. Exiting the Camera application while recording will stop recording and will save the video to the Camera Roll. Note: Video-recording features are not available on original iPhone or iPhone 3G.
    - If your iPhone has a front and rear camera, try switching between them to verify if the issue persists on both.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

    Hello ffattah,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities
I have a couple of articles for you to run through and test out. The first is to address the camera not working, take a look at this one iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802.
    Camera is not functioning
If the screen shows a closed lens or black image, force quit the Camera app.

For the Wifi being grayed out in your settings take a look at this article named iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1559
And if none of that works try resetting the device with this process from iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting found http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Lastly you may need to backup and restore the device with iTunes:

  • Continuous autofocus no working anymore

I recently found out that when i use the default app autofocus does not work anymore while filming (altough it's working before i start filming). Touch to focus still works. I searched for other videocam apps and it's working good, but not with the default app anymore. I did a hard reset, a restore, but still it's the same.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thank you!

Noone here who can help me? I did another restore today, but with new iphone setting instead of restoring my old settings and still it's the same thing. How can I tweak the default camera app to work with continuous autofocus again?
