Automate Application & Essbase Backup

Hi Gurus
We have done lots of things on different topics in this forum but one thing which i feel lack is Backup & Recovery Procedures. How can we automate Application & Db Backup for Data forms. Anyone have implemented it or have some clue then pls let it share on this forum.
Thanks in advance
SNK

For the planning application then I would take a backup of the schema/db, this can be automated and done by your dba.
For essbase then different backup options are outlined in :- http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/epm_backup_recovery/launch.html
It all depends on your backup method to how it would be automated.
Cheers

    Thank You John,
I want A suggestion if data size is increasing significantly like upto 50 GB or plus what is recommended as the best practice for backup automation.
Currently i am doing export with the help of MaxL script scheduled through Windows Scheduling, Well as export it the most time consuming meth in all of the possible ways what is the best the can be adapted.
A bundle of Thanks for your help and support.

  • Online Essbase backup

    Hi All,
Can anyone tell me the how do i do the online essbase backup.
IF yes how and can i take backup of database while calculations are executing....
    Regards,
    Mink

Yes, I've had similar environments. On larger cubes you don't often get savings because the "changed files" equals the "entire database" every day, at least for environments where time is dense. Robocopy is good, I've used it almost everywhere (although they are unrelated, that's why I tried RoboTask in the first place).
The staging area I use is only 3 copies of each database, but that's arbitrary (the batch job supports grandfather/father/son schemes of up to 9 levels, plus any number of "type" qualifiers -- like daily, weekly, special, deep archive, etc...). With restoration just a double-click (and about 15 minutes) away at any point for any "stored" backup. So we also have no need to go to tape unless it's a true D/R.
I don't even have to change anything for new production apps, it's part of the shell script that runs the data load as a single command call (the shell also sends email when finished -- if the script has the meta-tags for it), and creates a daily log of begin/end entries for each process.
The real key is using a standard framework -- which is like skinning cats so there's no point in saying one is ideal or better than another. On the detail level however, being able to fit a new piece into the framework can definitely be done better or worse. :)
To me, the real proof came in our last D/R test (I know, I talk about it often enough) -- but what I didn't say was that *I* didn't even do the recovery. The Junior admin did it with about 3 months of experience in essbase. I was officially dead on the site and only took notes. That tells a lot about system recoverability.

  • Can I use the Disk Utility Application to backup bootcamp windows 7?

Can I use the Disk Utility Application to backup Bootcamp that has Windows 7 on it?  If I install a new blank drive, I would like to know that using Time Machine I can get the MAC OS back and using the Disk Image Utility I can restore Bootcamp with Windows 7.

    NO.
You have to use Windows or a Windows utility.
There are programs that will clone an entire drive (sector) as well.
DU does not though. Paragon does support Boot Camp.

  • Automatic Offline Full Backup Plan: CQ5 Installed As a Service

I have designed an Automatic Offline Full Backup Plan for CQ5 Installed As a Service. I welcome your comments.
Do you have any better way (scripts)?
Offline Full Backup Scripts for Author
    :: offlineAuthorBackUp_CQ5AsService.bat
    :: Stop CQ5 service
    chdir /D %~dp0
    net stop cq5
::copy all files and folders to the destination
    mkdir h:\cq5backup\offline\author\backup
::robocopy only copies the updated files, so it is very quickly
    c:
    robocopy /MIR c:\cq5\author h:\cq5backup\offline\author\backup
    :: Start CQ5 service
    net start cq5
    ::Zip the backup with 7z.exe
    h:
    cd h:\cq5backup\offline\author
    7z a -y -tzip offlineAuthorBackup_%date:~4,2%%date:~7,2%.zip h:\cq5backup\offline\author\backup

There is one big advantage of a clone.  You can immediately reboot
to it and continue working and deal with the regular boot drive faiure,
what ever it may be, later.  Especially since all your data and such
is on another drive.  If you use your computer for work and time
critical projects, this is a major plus!
In the case of a hard drive failure/replacement, copying the clone
to the drive is the fastest way to get the system and all your settings
    back.
Time Machine and incremental backups have a place as well.  It is best
suited for "incremental" problems.  Examples are installing an upgrade to
software that doesn't work or just don't plain like.  With Time Machine it
is easy to just restore back to the point before the install.
Something else I do is backup current project files to USB memory sticks.
If you are using your computer for business, you can never have too many
backups.  Coralllary 456 of Murphy's Law is the "number of backups that
you need will be one more than what you have!"

Use any number of free alternatives to your nearly decade old version of MS Office.
    Consider
    LibreOffice (donation-supported)
    NeoOffice (free)
    OpenOffice (free)
In addition to the above I also recommend Apple's Pages ($19.99). I use OpenOffice and Pages and have been completely Microsoft - free for years. Life is better without Microsoft.

  • Time Machine Backups disk not automatically unmounting after backup completes in Lion

I am using Time Machine over WiFi on a 3rd party USB drive shared as an AirDisk through an Airport Extreme router. Ever since switching to Lion (clean install), I have noticed that the Time Machine backup disk will not automatically unmount after a backup is completed. This creates a problem when my MacBook Pro comes back from sleep. Specifically, the WiFi notification icon in the Finder toolbar indicates that WiFi is connected, even though it's not connected to a network, and I am unable to connect to any networks for what seems like several minutes until the Time Machine backups disk disappears from the desktop and WiFi actually connects.
Since the disk was not cleanly unmounted, Time Machine then keeps complaining that the sparse bundle file is locked and cannot be mounted every time it tries to do a backup. I have to either disconnect/reconnect the USB drive physically from the router, or restart the router every time this happens to resolve the issue. That is getting really annoying to have to do every time. I suppose I could manually unmount the Time Machine disk after every backup but it's ridiculous to have to do that every time I want to put the computer to sleep.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue and is there a fix?

For others who might be having this problem - I was able to resolve it by connecting my backup disk to my mac via USB, completely erasing it, and starting over from a new backup. Disk Utility was not reporting any errors when I verified the disk, but I went ahead and repartitioned it and started fresh. The disk now automatically unmounts after backups complete.

  • Is using Nero 8 "Back It Up" application to backup iTunes folder okay?

    Hi all,
For months now I've had various problems with the built-in iTunes backup wizard.
I've successfully moved the entire iTunes folder structure - including the .itl and .xml files onto my external drive and I would now like to back this up to DVD's.
I have the full Nero 8 suite. If I used the Nero 8 Back It Up application to backup the entire iTunes folder structure to DVD will this work okay without causing me any issues.
    Many thanks,
    Steve.

I, also, have had backup to DVD problems and that was when my media collection was a lot smaller.
Today I have everything directly copied from from my media drive 'F'(iTunes Music copied to a separate internal drive) to my back up external hard drive but the media is well over 300 GBs now so ... I just downloaded Syncback to get around the incremental back up problem (There isn't one for an ext. hd in iTunes ?).
I would really rather do this with iTunes but for now it looks like that isn't possible.
Please, someone, tell me I'm wrong and Apple has some app that runs a Windows XP incremental back up that I just haven't heard of!

  • Infrastructure Navigator Automatic Application Definitions failing

When I attempt to Add Automatic Application Definitions I get the following error:
Unable to add the application definition. An unknown error has occurred while trying to retrieve data from the Navigator server.  Ensure that the Navigator server is up an running.
I have also found the majority of the vms in our environment show Access failed.  An unknown error has occurred.
I am not sure which logs should be reviewed to provide some clues to these issues.
Any ideas or thoughts would prove helpful!
BTW our version is 2.0.0.398.  I hope to upgrade to 5.5 some time next month so I will be able to upgrade to 5.8 but don't want to carry issues like this forward!
    Any ideas?  Thoughts?

Please let me know how I can get the file to you!

  • Close OS X applications automatically before scheduled backup?

To successfully perform automatically scheduled backups, frequently you need to close OS X applications first so their data files are not locked.
Can anyone recommend an OS X utility or procedure that I can use for scheduling the automatic closing of such applications on a Tiger G5 in advance of the scheduled backups?
    db

To see which programs are running and to quit them, you can click on the Apple symbol in the upper left-hand corner of the screen and click on "Force Quit." Any programs that are open will show up in there.  To close them you can double click on them in the list and you will see the task bar at the top change to that program.  For example, if you see that Safari is open in the list, then, when you double click on it, the task bar will change at the top to show that you are now in the Safari program. To close it all you would have to do is to click on "Safari" and out of the drop-down box, choose "Quit", and it will close the program.
Or, you can click on the Apple symbol, and "Force Quit." Once the list pops up, select the one that you want to close and then click on "Force Quit" down below the list.  This will bring up a message asking you if you are sure that you want to close it, or something to that effect.

  • Automatic or scripted backup of appset (application set)

    Hi experts,
I'm currently using BPC 7.5 MS and I try to schedule an automatic backup in the same way I can manually backup an appset with server manager.
Unfortunately, I don't find any script or method allowing to doing this task.
Is there a way to script the backup task?
    Regards,
    Guillaume

    Hello Guillaume,
There is no built-in BPC script/task to backup AppSets the way Server Manager does.
However, you can create an SSIS package to perform a similar backup. All you need to do is:
    - backup SQL Server database
    - backup SSAS database
    - backup AppSet folder in FileDB
    - backup AppSet folder in Webfolders
You can Zip folders as well. Beneficially, you can use SQL Server backup compression. And to make it work similar to Server Manager backup, you can stop "OutlookSoft SendGovernor Service" prior to backups and start it after completion.
    Hope that helps,
    Akim
P.S. on another hand, you might want to have a separate SQL Server database backup with transaction logs to improve recoverability. So, I'd just go with separate backups for SQL Server DBs, SSAS DBs and folders.

  • Firefox 29 is no longer automatically creating bookmarks backups.

I hate to be posting another question having finally (I believe) finding a work around for the "Firefox 29 fails to exit properly and remains running in task manager" problem.
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/997670
However, in Firefox 28 FF would automatically create a new bookmarks backup upon first opening of each day and the number of bookmark backups could be set in about:config setting:
    browser.bookmarks.max_backups
Since installing Firefox 29 this functionality does not appear to be working. Is this by design or another "issue"? Has anyone else noticed this issue?
Please don't ask me to "reset to default state", "run in safe mode", etc. I just went through all that with the above "Failing to exit properly" thread. I know I can manually backup bookmarks. I would like to know whether this is by design, if other people have noticed this, or I am the only one experiencing this.

    Kind Regards,

This is a bit of a "bump" with some new things I have tried. I have run the Places Maintenance add-on (again) and places.sqlite integrity seems absolutely fine.
    Places Maintenance: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
    I have re-installed FF 29.
I am able to create manually, and restore, bookmark backups without a hitch.
I did delete places.sqlite and restarted FF 29. The only thing I lost was all my bookmark Icons. So I re-added the former places.sqlite. Of course, I would have to wait until tomorrow morning to know for sure, but since the Places Maintenance add-on indicated no problems, and since I can manually create them, I am quite sure it is not a corrupted places.sqlite file.
I tried what may be a dubious add-on, BackupFox, and it failed to create a new backup but left a temp file in the main profile folder.
Logic tells me that if I can manually create and restore bookmark backups, then something in the engine(?) may be responsible but I do not know enough to go further with that. Permissions must be O.K. or I wouldn't be able to make (manually) a backup.
I did not have this problem at all with FF 28. Rather, I was asking cor-el how to limit the number of backups, which he showed me. What makes this difficult to test is that I would have to wait until the first opening of FF each day to tell.
I can't tell if this problem is "only me" or affecting others, however, (no insult intended) I can paste into the support.mozilla.org page search box the exact title of this thread and not find it. I shows up number 1 on Google doing similar search. People who aren't checking their profile folder each day might not even be noticing this.
cor-el, or anybody, have you found auto backups have stopped in FF 29 for you? Anyone who reads this please let me know if your bookmark auto-backup is working. Just peak in your profile and see if you have a new one each day.
Does anyone know just what .dll or .exe or what actually is triggered how that causes the auto-backup to occur? Is it the maintenance service?
What I have not tried is creating another profile because this one seems just fine and I has always worked before 29, and still does work, as far as profiles go. I need to know what "triggers" auto bookmark backup and I doubt it is my profile.
    Regards again,
    Axis

Now I unable to find the LCM backup file, where it has generate? what is the location of the backup file by this batch execution?

As for my knowledge "." will fetch from the directory where we are running.Exactly. A directory. Not a JAR file. If you want to access it via File, you can't put it into the JAR. if you want to put it into the JAR, you need to use Class.getResource() and friends.

  • Essbase Backup

Is this the correct forum to post Essbase questions?
We are using Begin Archive and End Archive (EssCmd) to run file system backups on Essbase applications and databases. We've run into a problem ending the archive. We think it is a conflict with a user running a process. We are looking at embedding it in Java with the API and error trapping. Is there a method that works using only Maxl or EssCmd scripts?

    Hi,
We are using the following steps for back up for around 35 databases in version 7.1
    1.     Login to server.
    2.     Logout All users using LOGOUTALLUSERS command
    3.     Disable Login for each individual Appname in sequential order- using DISABLELOGIN command for all 35 db
    4.     Selecting individual appname and dbname.
    5.     Export data for selected app and db
    6.     Unload Application
    7.     Enable Login for that selected Database.
But we are facing problem like even though all the users are logged out and by the time it selects a particular app and db and exports, if any other user request access to some other app name or database, Essbase allows the complete read/write access for the same. Due to which we get dbname.esm file getting locked out and corrupted.
To avoid the users to have any write mode capability, can we use BEGINARCHIVE and ENDARCHIVE commands?
What I have thought will be the changed steps after we add these 2 commands-
    1. Login to AZ18NT169 server.
    2. Disable Login for each individual Appname in sequential order- using DISABLELOGIN command.
    3. Logout All users using LOGOUTALLUSERS command.
    4. Beginarchive for each db
    5. Selecting individual appname and dbname
    6. Exporting data for that selected app name and dbname.
    7. Unload Application (Stops the specified application)
    8. EndArchive for each db
    9. Enable Login for that selected Database.
Please let me know if I can achieve my goal of making sure that db is completely in read only mode after we log out all users and if any users request access it will be only read only?
    Appreciate your help in advance.
    Thanks,
    Richa

  • Storing Multiple Essbase Backups

    Hello,
We currently run a nightly backup using the MaxL script below. Due to a change in business practices, we now need to save mulitple days worth of backups instead of writing over the previous night's backup, as we do in this script. Does anyone know of a way to include today's date in the name of the file? Right now we have it named as Plan1BkupLv0.txt but I would like it to read "Date"Plan1BkupLv0.txt, where "Date" represents the date the backup is run. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

    Hi GlennS,
Thank you so much for the response. I am not versed in MaxL or batch scripts so the easier, the better for me. I am just trying to adjust scripts that consultants wrote during our Hyperion implementation. Below is what I now have for the batch script after adding your suggested changes and is not creating the mulitple files. Would you have a suggestion as to what I have done wrong and how to fix it? Thanks again!
