Automatic app updates in iOS 8, only when not signed in with Apple ID?

Just updated to iOS 8, and discovered an odd issue, as follows:
One of my favorite additions of iOS 7 was the automatic app updates, because I do not have access to the app store. My app store is locked under restrictions, but with automatic updates I had no need for the app store in order to update my existing apps.
Well, I just updated to iOS 8, and I find that there is only an option for automatic app updates when the app store is open, but as soon as the app store is locked through restrictions, the automatic updates option disappears. And to add to the mystery, the only way to get it back is by SIGNING OUT of my Apple ID. When I do that, the automatic music downloads option disappears, and it is replaced by an option for automatic app updates.
Is this intentional? Why on Earth is there no option for auto updates when signed in, only when signed out? I can't make any sense of it. Any help would be appreciated.
Other than that, iOS 8 is awesome so far.

I have automatic app updates turned on but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. I've had to update my app manually so far. Right now I have three listed as "pending" but they haven't downloaded yet. Is there some kind of delay?

brad805 just as you messaged me I plugged my phone in one last time to see if it would work now and it has. My advice to others in my position. Try pressing the off and menu buttons at the same time if this doesnt work just leave the phone several hours like I did and go back plug it into your computer again and see if it works. I was patient and left mine plugged it in again and got a result.

Using iphone 4s that is still on ios 6.1.3, is there any way i can update to ios 7 only and not ios 8?

I had to borrow my mom's iphone 4s cause my iphone 5 died on me. this 4s is still on iOS 6.1.3 is there any way i can just upgrade to iOS 7 and not iOS8? I have some apps that won't work on the current ios version installed.

I have just updated my iPhone software to ios 5, it all seemed to go very smoothly until I was asked for my Apple ID.
I clearly have a working ID as I'm signed into this very website so it isn't a problem with that - but when I've attempted sign-in it has come up with "Error creating ds account: null"
I was going to skip this step but it pops up again saying that you need it for iTunes and I wasn't sure if I could sign into my ID at a later time or not, so I'm stuck on the Apple ID page!
Has anyone else had this issue or a solution?

I've managed to sort it out now - I think my problem was to do with the Internet, as my connection wasn't working when I first tried to sign into apple ID. I did a step back and re-selected my Internet router, and it then seemed to work! Give this a go because it worked for me!

Automatic App Updates Stopped

I'm not sure when, maybe a few weeks ago, but suddenly all of my automatic updates for iOS apps have stopped. I will click on the App Store every few days and there will be 10-20 updates waiting for me. Same goes with my wife's phone and our iPads. Did something happen in iOS? Is there a setting that I'm missing (I have the automatic app updates set to "on" in the setting menu. Please help!

Automatic app updates?

i have automatic downloads for apps enabled on both itunes on my computer and in the store settings on my phone. i see that when i download a new app on my phone, it automatically downloads to itunes and vice versa. is it possible to get this to work for updates for existing apps as well? when i update an app on my computer or on my phone it doesn't look like it automatically downloads to the other device. i restored my iphone recently and i thought this was possible before, but i could easily just be making up things in my head.

It's only automatic app download (new purchases) - provided the app is 20MB at most while on 3G, no cap while on Wi-Fi including hopping on to other iPhone's personal hotspot.
Automatic app update isn't necessarily good,
There are instances where updated versions crash, have removed functionality, worse off, bug issues etc, compatibility issues, profile data loss etc - this is on the bad side, it does happen ocassionally where things go the opposite direction of what the release notes say.
For free apps, you don't know if sometimes the developer feel that giving apps free is really too good a deal and start adding ads etc..
Its better to read the update release notes and probably the reviews on the current version as well,
if you see a noticably large bunch of bad review like "after a game app updates, my character gets reset!!!@@" - don't update it until the developers rectify the issue.
"nooooo my news app doesn't fetch news anymore!!! *1star*" (99/100 people found this review helpful) - Like the above, don't get it.
There are issues which may not crop up during tests ran by the developers, they're just a couple of people while the consumers are a larger bunch of "testers"
However to note, if you were to see people specifically mentioning
"the update/app crashes only when I'm on an iPod Touch or iPad1!@!@!@" - especially games
And no issues with iPhone 4/4S iPad2 etc, chances are you're safe. That's because iPod touch has an underclocked processor and scaled down specs, like the iPad which may be the cause of the issues.

I am having the same issues--just got off phone with customer service rep--was told that my phone is in recoveyr mode and that I would have to restore it, however, the only things that would be restored would be from my last backup which was in November 2013! I was also told that apple users should not update as soon as the update is available (so why are they sending it to us if they're not sure that there will be any problems!!!). I can't restore now since I am in work--will do it when I go home tonight. In the meantime, I am without a working iphone for the day! This is horrible--I see I'm not the only one who has experienced this!

Force close the App Store app and reset the iPad. No data will be lost when you reset the device.
In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Next, reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

I consistently close all apps, keep my brightness down, keep wifi off when not in use, and location services. Reset my phone and still the battery drains so fast!
It appears to be messaging, and Facebook apps, and safari that are the leading cause..
If I send maybe 10 texts, I'll easily lose 4-8 % battery. I literally watch it drain in front of my eyes.
Roughly a minute of Facebook, safari, or mail consumes 1-2%.
That is faulty hardware, or software..
Either way it's apples fault. My phone is mint! Never been out of this otter box except to wipe dust off and when I charge it..
I charge regularly. Let it die down before charging, and let it almost completely die then fully charge it once a month too.
I hope apple repairs my battery, or software

Apps that became iOS 4-only are deleting previous app copies from phone

I've noticed that newer versions of apps that became iOS-4-only have been causing the previous iOS 3.1.x compatible version of the app to be deleted from the iPhone when syncing. I assume this is because the newer version of the app is not backwards compatible with iOS 3.1.x, so iTunes tries to replace the app on the phone with nothing, thereby deleting it.
Is there a way to prevent this? An example of this behavior is iPassword Pro 3.1.1 to 3.5 on an iPhone with OS 3.1.2.

got my apps back!! while my ipad was plugged into itunes i clicked on my device, selected the Apps tab. It listed the 5 pages of apps I should have on my ipad. I moved the last app i actually had currently on the ipad to the bottom of the last page of what I should have had on the ipad. I applied it, it went thru a Sync and they are all back on now hope it helps you!
