I have a macbook pro mid2010 running OSX Maverick

Hello joaofromsantarem,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you may have selected to "Automatically adjust brightness". Take a look at this article:

    Hello,
i have iPhone 4 and i have problem with automatic-brightness. I have turn on automatic-brightness, but it does'nt work. Brightness is all the time same (in dark or at sunny). People says it's firmware error. What to do with this?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Automatic brightness adjustment not working properly

Hi, i bought a macbook air 2013 in july. about 2 weeks ago i discovered the automatic brightness adjustment and checked it was working correctly. about a week ago i realized it wasnt. i turn the lights off (or cover the sensor next to the camera) and the keyboard light dims instead of increasing its intensity. and the exact opposite happens when the lights are on.
i have already restarted the system managment controller as it is explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 but the problem persists.
and of course i have checked the adjust keybord brightness box in the keyboard settings.
i dont now what else to do. any help would be very much appreciated.

A new Mac is in warranty for 1 year from the date of purchase.

    Best.

  • Automatic brightness no longer works with mountain lion

I have a mid-2010 13" MBP that I upgraded to Mountain Lion via a clean install. Since the upgrade, the automatic brightness feature has stopped working and the laptop's screen brightness no longer responds to changes in ambient light level.
I've also noticed that I cannot deselect "automatically adjust brightness" in System Preferences – although I can clear the checkbox, as soon as I leave Display Preferences and go back, the box is rechecked. Adjusting the brightness using the slider or F1/F2 works as expected.
So far, I've tried resetting the SMC and PRAM, and using several combinations of energy and display settings, but no luck.
Is anyone else having this issue? Any ideas how I might solve it? Thanks.

Apparently I have the same issue! Also I am unable to change the brightness settings for the keyboard backlight. (see my post about that here) Unfortunately I have yet to find a solution to the problem. I'm currently re-downloading the Mountain Lion install, hopefully a re-install will correct the issue. I'll let you know if I find anything.

  • Automatic Brightness Settings Lost on Sleep

I've disabled the setting to automatically adjust the display brightness, however from time to time when I wake the computer from sleep this setting is re-enabled and the display is running at full brightness.
Has anybody else seen this issue and know if there is a fix for it?
    Cheers
    Adam

The auto brightness function has always seemed broken to me.
If it works at all, its effect is very limited.
I expect to pick up the phone in the dead of night and see very much dimmed
display, and in bright sunlight, a fully bright display.
Such is not the case, and never has been as far as I can tell. It still honors the slider position, with the auto working only as a vernier to that.
    Its broke I tell ya...

  • What Happened to Automatic Brightness

Where is the iPod touch 5th generation's automatic screen brightness feature in the menues?
Just to reiterate I know the 4th generation could change the screen brightness that was a good help when the ambient area's light changes then the iPod isn't glaring in your eyes at night or is so dim at night it is not visable.

All they'll tell you is that it is not a feature of the fifth-generation iPod touch. They will not discuss why they made the decision not to include it. If this is a critical issue for you and you're still within any return period, you can return the iPod.

  • Automatic Brightness Setting

I have read that it is better to set the Thunderbolt screen brightness to about 40% to save battery life. Does anyone know if I am better off just leaving it on automatic since the phone would adjust to a lower light setting when needed?

Everyone probably has different feelings and preferences on this. I have mine set a 25% inside and turn it up to 100% if I need to use it outside. I know 25% sounds pretty low, but it's really looks fine indoors. Automatic should be fine, anything is better than leaving it on 100% all of the time and having it eat your battery. I just prefer more control and knowing what the setting is instead of leaving it up to the auto adjust and not knowing what % it's at. That's one of the great things about Android. I actually have a little control over my phone now. There are a lot of brightness adjustment apps and widgets in the Market. This is the one I use: http://https://market.android.com/details?id=com.curvefish.widgets.brightnesslevel&feature=search_result
Just an edit to agree with vereyezuhn. I doubt that the automatic setting uses any more battery or memory than one of the apps or widgets, I just have more control with the app.

  • HT201401 Automatic brightness not working

When I go the the bright places the iphone screen becomes bright and when i go back to the dark place the iphone screen doesnt dimm..that is it is not working in reverse...it only detects the brightness of the surrounding of it doesnt sence the darkness ..
hence my iphone is all time in full brightness once it senses the brightness of the surrounding.
what can be the solution ?

I think I have discovered the problem. The system remembers where you have manually set the brightness, and tries to stay around that level even when moving from bright to dark rooms.
I manually set the brightness to 5/8, waited a minute, then went outside in the sun. As expected, it adjusted to max. However, when I came back inside and sat down, it only went down to 5/8 again. I guess earlier when it was going down to 3/8, it was just trying to get back to my manual setting (I had set it to 3/8 this morning while in my dark bedroom). Even if I completely cover the sensor, the brightness now only goes down to about 4/8.
On the MacBook, it used the full range of brightness and completely ignored any previous manual settings. I could use the automatic feature to completely control the brightness at all times. Now, with the Air, the automatic feature instead tries to maintain the user-selected brightness level as much as possible.
I'm not sure which style I prefer. I did like not having to ever touch the brightness buttons, although I admit it was occasionally too dim in certain situations. I would prefer that the Air dim much more when in completely dark rooms, and maybe the sensitivity of the sensor should be increased a bit.
Now the only issue is how the keyboard backlight seems to stay on in all conditions except in the sun! It is on now even though it is obviously bright enough in the room to read a paperback book, let alone a keyboard.

  • Automatic Brightness post Kitkat.

I *think* that the auto-brightness on my Z1 Compact has stopped working after the kitkat update. I say "think" as I only noticed it post the update, but, given how annoying I've found it, I somehow think I'd have noticed before!
I have tried facing the phone into pretty strong light, (sunlight, not artificial), but it didn't seem to make any difference.
I've had a look at the diagnostics, but it didn't seem to have anything related to the light sensor, so I couldn't do that test...

I have; put brightness up to max, clicked "adjust" - it dims (ok, not to that dim, but dimmer than it was before I clicked the "adjust"!. Put it under the brightest light I have. It stays dimmer. Unclik "adjust" & it returns to being as bright as it was before.
Guess I can live with it

  • Automatic display brightness not working on 2012 Air?

I have a 2008 aluminum MacBook which I bought on day zero. The automatic screen brightness on it works perfectly. When I am in a dark room, the brightness goes down significantly, so I am not blinded. When I am in a bright room, the brightness goes up. The keyboard backlighting is equally consistent and works great. It's all worked perfectly for the past four years.
I now have a 2012 Air and the automatic brightness doesn't seem to work as well. It barely seems to change the brightness. I use it in a pitch black room and the brightness goes down a bit, but no where near as low as on my MacBook. I have to manually turn it down further. Another example: I had it turned down last night, but right now, typing in a sunny room, the brightness has barely raised (when I push the brightness button, it shows it at four bars).
I never notice the keyboard backlight change. It also never seems to turn off, even when I am in direct sunlight. On my MacBook, it turns off in bright light.
I know the sensor is working, at least partly, because if I am in a bright room, I can cover the sensor with my finger and the screen dims a little.
Is this the expected behaviour? Does the keyboard backlighting never turn off automatically? Is your screen dimming enough in the dark? I literally never, ever, had the need to manually adjust my screen or keyboard brightness on my MacBook. On this new Air, the automatic brightness may as well be disabled, since it barely seems to do anything.

I think I have discovered the problem. The system remembers where you have manually set the brightness, and tries to stay around that level even when moving from bright to dark rooms.
I manually set the brightness to 5/8, waited a minute, then went outside in the sun. As expected, it adjusted to max. • Nokia Lumia 1520 - Screen Brightness Problem

I  have two Nokia Lumia 1520.
Both of them have the same problem. I will explain the problem to you in detail and before that let me assure you I am a Windows Phone long time user , have been part of the development , developed several apps for the platform and I have used Lumia 800 , 720 , 920 , 925 and now 1520. So I am well aware of all the settings , sunlight readability , automatic brightness etc. This problem is not due to any of these , I can assure you
    Now the problem ,
I set the automatic brightness option OFF
I move the brightness to HIGH
    Then I lock the phone
When I unlock the phone , the brightness drops by 10% suddenly without any intervention
This problem happens sometime. Some days I see this problem , some days I don't and there are few days where I see this problem very heavily.
I purchased another 1520 and it has the same problem. I am very sure , from my experience that this is a firm ware issue. This is NOT a hardware problem , but a serious problem from your software end. It is prudent that Nokia recognizes this problem and finds a solution to this. Interestingly , I am not the only one who is facing this problem , the whole globe is facing the same problem and for such a pricey phone , this is a frustrating experience - very frustrating. I am sending some links , which will show the problems users are facing:

The phone is rock solid and amazing except this irritating problem.
I have only few days within which I can request a exchange from the merchant. So if any Nokia official can confirm that a software fix is on the way , it would be super helpful
    Nokia , please help !

I have Nokia Lumia 1520 Black.
I have also been facing the same problem with screen brightness.
The problem occurs only when the Brightness is in Automatic mode.
--> When the Brightness is set to Automatic mode & take out from dark location to bright location the display turns out to weird grey color.
--> And then if the brightness is set to low, medium or high display comes to normal.
Is this issue related to the hardware or software.
If it is related to the Software will you be able to fix it ? or else How about the replacing with the new one ?
    Awaiting for the response.

I am not sure if the backlight is supposed to increase/decrease with ambient light conditions. This is true of the display that it will adjust its brightness with ambient light conditions. The 'manual' setting is the one to use to adjust the backlight to a comfortable level. Then the backlight switches off if computer is idle and this delay you can set by the slider in the system preferences>keyboard.
once the keyboard backlight goes off it comes back on again if you touch any key and the brightness of it will be the level at which you have manually set by the F5 and F6 keys.
At least this is what I could see on my MBP. If there is a way to turn on automatic brightness level it would be good to know.

  • IPhone display auto brightness

brightness does not function properly on the new iPhone4 sometimes it's dim and I can't see the screen during the day and I need to powered off and re start the system in order for to work properly I've had to do this twice in the four days that I've had my new iPhone4
I have always used  the AUTO LIGHT CONTROL feature for the screen displayed on my old iPhone 3GS and it does save the battery I never used
manual setting and I kept in the normal position and it never worked like this it always works properly maybe a bit slow but this one the screen is stuck in the light position sometimes that is dark and I haven't even been in the dark it's either a software issue or maybe somethings wrong with the sensor on the new iPhone if this is a common

Do you use a case, screen protector?
Maybe it is blocking the Ambient Light Sensor.
Set whether iPhone adjusts screen Go to Settings > Brightness and turn Auto-Brightness on or off. If Auto- brightness automatically Brightness is on, iPhone adjusts the screen brightness for current light
conditions using the built-in ambient light sensor.

  • Auto brightness- press settings - brightness

No auto brightness, pressing settings - brightness & wallpaper there is a brightness scroll bar but the box underneath saying auto brightness has gone. It was there before!!!
The box was there after updates.

The level you set in automatic brightness is the minimum level the display will go to when the phone is turned on, assuming you are in total darkness.
It will then auto adjust UPWARDS ONLY when you go into brighter environments, however the amount of adjustment is limited, so if you want to be able to achieve maximum brightness in bright sunlight, you would need to set the level fairly high to begin with.
It will not adjust downwards if you then go into a dark environment, at least in my experience. Others have said it does after a minute or so, but if I switch on my phone in he middle of the night or in a cinema etc. I don't wait a minute to see if it will dim, I do it manually.

  • AT300 - need help with display brightness

Hello! Help solve the problem with the AT300 tablet.
Balanced consumption charge off, automatic brightness control is also disabled. But when watching videos, surfing and gaming brightness still varies depending on the color of the image. If the image is dark, the brightness decreases, if the picture is brighter - the screen gets brighter. How do to fix the brightness?
    Thanks!

    Hello,
I have the same problem like flash85.
When I scroll down on bright websites and a darker picture is shown on the screen,
the whole display becomes much darker and even the colors on the screen change.
Yesterday I've tried the same website on an IPad and the background and colors perfectly
    stays the same.
Also the display permanently dimms down or up if the automatic brightness control is
enabled. This is also very disturbing.
I can't imagine that this behaviour is normal. I read many tests before and none of it mentioned this.
