Automatic Chapter Markers

Is there a way to dump my video onto idvd and have it automatically make chapter markers at each clip break?

Will iMovie or iDvd add a chapter marker every time the record button is hit on the camera/ camcorder? Manually? ..... Yes. Automatically? ...... No.
If I'm not mistaken there's a 99 limit to the number of chapters that can be added to any given movie within iDvd. Most of my own shoots (weddings) would exceed this particular limit. But I can understand where it would benefit your type of on location shooting for football games.
You may wish to make such a recommendation directly to apple since most of the time they rarely read these forums:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/idvd.html
You can have iDvd set interval chapter markers every so many minutes apart like this:

Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

    might've posted this before...
ive used iDVD for a while and know the preference for the chapter markers from FCP 7 to iDVD.  finally using Studio pro trying to firgure out about automatic chapter markers.  I edited it in FCP X and exported it to make the chapters in FCP 7
I have a few different format files
    from FCP 7
8.03 gig DVD studio chapter marked
        8.03 gig compression marked
    then in compression
    best quality 90 min DVD
A dolby Digital Pro 2 says "the destiation does not have read/write access"
    or the mpeg 2     6.2mbps 2 pass      """"""
then I tried using individual clips from fcp 7 in/out export feature, but that seems to to be to large
how should i fix this annoying issue

    I'm talking about Compressor.
Compressor wants a destination to which to send an output file. Unless otherwise specifiedm the default destination is Source. That means it will be written to wherever (drive>folders path) the source file was stored.

  • The difference between chapter markers and dvd studio pro markers

Does anyone know what is the difference between chapter markers and dvd studio pro markers? I can not find anywhere on Google. Also in the tutorials I have seen, suggesting DVD Studio Pro markers, but it did not mention the chapter markers.
    Thanks,

"Adding Chapter and Compression Markers to Your Sequence
Once you have your edited sequence or program finished, you can add markers to the sequence for use on DVD. Markers are reference points you can place within clips or sequences that identify specific frames. There are two kinds of markers you can add that directly relate to authoring a DVD—chapter markers and compression markers.
    • Chapter markers allow DVD authoring applications to create a navigable chapter list for your exported QuickTime movie. Chapter markers force MPEG keyframes (known as I-frames) at their location, since the DVD specification requires an I-frame at each chapter point.
    • Compression markers identify areas of abrupt change and include two types: those that are automatically inserted by Final Cut Pro at all edit points, and those you manually place in the clip or sequence. Like chapter markers, compression markers force I-frames at their location, although in this case it is for better quality encoding, and they are not used to create a chapter list.
Note: When you export a QuickTime movie, you have an option to export various kinds of markers, including compression, chapter, or DVD Studio Pro markers. *When you choose to export DVD Studio Pro markers, Final Cut Pro actually exports chapter markers and all compression markers.* This includes compression markers you set manually, as well as ones created automatically by Final Cut Pro at edit and transition points."

  • How to add chapter markers for each file in a folder?

    Hello,
I have several image folders with up to 700 images per. I would like to drag & drop them into the timeline but I want to be able to use the chapter/arrow button on the DVD player remote to scroll through them.....like a videoscrapbook, per se.
Is there a setting that will allow me to drop them into the time line and automatically generate a chapter marker for each image, that will be read on export to DVDSP? Surely, there is something like this built in that I just have not yet found; I cannot believe the only alternative is to manually add 700 chapter markers per folder. And do they always go into the timeline in alphabetical order? Can that be prevented or altered?
Also, doesn't it seem strange there is no single-button option (I'm presuming here, since I have not found one) for adding a chapter marker; the '~' button adds a generic marker but you must 'edit' it and click 'chapter marker' - very time-consuming --- or am I missing something here, too? If so please enlighten me! I've experimented a lot but no luck.
    Many thanks!
    jf

I thought there was a folder size limitation on DVDSP - these folders have digital family photos on them and they are jam-packed; 600, 700, whatever. And there are several of them. I guess I thought putting them in FCP was the only way to avoid the limitation - if there is one.
I'll try putting them straight into DVDSP and see what happens. Thanks!

  • For what reasons would you not be able to add chapter markers to a project?

New to this...I will try to give you the detail you need to answer without giving you a long story. I am actually asking this question because I have a video production company working on my wedding video..they are using iDVD to burn but I am not sure if they are using iMovie to compose or some other software. Anyways, this is actually the second time around with my video. They produced it 18 months ago and it looked beautiful! The only problem was that we realized 10 months later that there was an audio problem with the wedding ceremony. In the meantime, the person who originally worked on the project left with the software and the equipment. So, they had to start over and have been working on the redo since February and I think I am the iDVD "test rat". They are telling me now that it is not possible to add chapter markers to the project in iDVD. And this is part of the e-mail they sent me with a supposed explanation:
+I took your corrected DVD to the Apple Store and the training expert explained to me that this program only shows each chapter at a time and the program will automatically go back to the menu after each chapter+.
From what I have been reading on the discussion boards, the only reason that adding chapter markers would not be possible is that they are using iDVD '08 (since they purchased the software in February, I don't think this is possible) or that they did not use the original wedding tape to create the new DVD project..they used the already broken down video segments from the 1st DVD and just put them in menu folders??? Any help or explanation would be GREATLY appreciated! If there is any additional information you might need, I will do my best to provide it.
    THANKS!!!

    Hi cooperjb,
Welcome to apple discussions. iDvd is consumer authoring software. DVDSP on the other hand is part of FCS 2 / apple's top of the line / professional DVD authoring software. There are some significant (huge) differences between the two apps which I won't go into great details here since I could likely fill a text book on this very subject. Instead you can search this forum/s for a few prior posts as well as apple's knowledge base (KB) for further details on exactly why pros prefer to use Apple's FCS 2 as opposed to the i-Apps.
As much as one may want iDvd to act and perform exactly like Professional Software, It is not. It's intended for consumers (and prosumers).
On a less serious note, this one's always good for a laugh:

  • How to set chapter markers in imovie 10

I am looking to set chapter markers at fixed intervals in imovie 10 as well as set custom chapter markers in family videos that I am converting from 8 mm tape.  Does anyone know how to do this in imovie version 10.0.6.  Thanks

Apple has removed the ability to set chapter markers with iMovie 10.
I use iMovie HD 06 or iMovie 11. (My favorite is iMovie HD 06.)  Both are readily available on Amazon as part of iLife 06 or iLife 11. With these versions of iMovie one click will set your chapter markers. These markers are automatically recognized by iDVD.

  • How do I insert chapter markers in iMovie '11?

In my various Google searches, I keep reading references to inserting chapter markers in iMovie, usually earlier versions. How can I manually insert chapter markers using iMovie '11? I really don't want to use iDVD, which apparently only lets you select how many minutes are between each chapter.

enable "show advanced tools" in iMovie preferences then you will see the little balloon indicated by the arrow.
drag it where you want to have your chapter in the project, give it a name, you're done.
when you'll export your movie and have it in idvd you'll automatically have the movie split in the chapters you've made.

  • No Chapter markers in share - DVD or blu ray?????

    Hi there,
Latest version of Lion and FCX.
I burned my 1st blu ray for a client last night (wuhoo!). It looks great.  Outstanding actually.  Used a Matrox CompressHD card to compress the H.264.
But I noticed no chapter markers present.
Thinking it was the matrox card, I did some investigation.
Turns out that chapter markers are 'apparently', NOT transferred during the share feature??!??!  It doesn't matter what I use for compression - markers simply don't transfer from FCX to Compressor 4!?!?!
Maybe I did something wrong - I'm just learning FCX after using FCP for years.
I had to re-create the chapters in Compressor 4.
Is that the way to have chapter markers carry across?
If so, that is simply one of the most asinine decisions about this product.  Forget all the hassles about not importing previous projects etc.. as that is a different issue, but discontinuing one of the most basic features from the previous product is just ridiculous.
Can anyone confirm the chapter marker workflow?  Again, it could be me doing something wrong, but I have a funny (and SAD!) feeling I'm not...
    Cheers,
    Keebler

No, you're not doing something wrong, chapter markers are a glaring omission from FCP X but apparently, Apple sees no future in DVD or even Blu Ray, so we're stuck with using Compressor or some other application to add chapter markers.
Fortunately, this is very simple if you list the timecode (each on separate lines in a text file) where you want the chapter markers to be - Compressor will import them and the markers appear automatically.
I agree with you though - it's pretty lame.

  • How are chapter markers implemented within QT?

Imagine a folder on a USB stick full of files – some may be stills, some videos. I want to be able to play them in sequence at the press of a button, just like an old-fashioned slide show.
Keynote seems to be a possibility, but before I buy Keynote I would have to download and upgrade to Mavericks. So I want to be fairly certain before I take this major step, that Keynote and QT can do everything I want.
I have posted a similar query in the Keynote forum (https://discussions.apple.com/message/26056146?ac_cid=op123456#26056146), but here I want to focus on the QT aspect.
    My Slide Show
Imagine a simple sequence in Keynote, 5 seconds per slide, 2-second dissolve, set to Manual advance (meaning the slide show only advances at the press of a button). The sequence is:
    Still A
    Video
    Still B
My slide show would consist of:
Still A comes on screen and stops
I press the button and Still A dissolves into Video and plays. Video freeze-frames at end.
I press the button and the freeze-frame dissolves into Still B and stops.
    QT Timeline
When exported from Keynote to QT, I assume the QT timeline would look something like this:
    Still A
Two seconds of dissolve between Still A and the video.
    Video
Still of last frame of video
Two seconds of dissolve between last frame of video and Still B
    Still B
I can't work out how QT could control the navigation. What I would like to know is how chapter markers work. Are there a variety of markers? Or just one that a user can jump to, and from that point play is automatic? Is there a marker that stops play? I've tried googling, but no luck. A link to details about QT markers and how I can control them would be most appreciated.
    Ques
Is my slide show possible in QT?

I'm in the same boat. I want a standalone presentation that doesn't require a native application such as Keynote or PowerPoint and that is not system dependant (ie, it works on mac windoze and linux).
In the old days (pre mavericks) Quicktime 7 did this no problem but since the most recent version of QT, this ability has been stripped from the program (as far as I can tell..)  Why would Keynote export to QT, when the main feature in QT that enables clickable presentations is gone, is a mystery.
An alternative is to download version 7 of QTplayer if you are only presenting on your mac. I don't know if the Windows versions of QT have retained the click/chapter headings function or not.
I would like to know if it is possible to enalbe this in the current version of QT or if there is an alternative player that will allow this function?

  • Using chapter markers as button start frames

I have a track with chapter markers, and I'm using a template menu with buttons to which I'm assigning the various chapter markers. I'd like to have the button thumbnail display the video from the start frame the corresponds to the particular chapter marker that I've assigned to that button. I can do this manually in the button inspector; you choose the video track as the "asset" and then use the slider to manually set the start frame. However, this is a tedious way to do this, I'm sure there must be a way to automatically set the thumbnail to display the video from the corresponding chapter marker?

option-drag the track from the graphical view onto the "chapter selection" button on your main menu - Choose "create chapter index" from the drop palette. and pick your template. This will automatically create as many chapter selection menus as are needed, with chapter markers displayed in the thumbnails, and all the navigation hooked up correctly. At least as correctly as the template specifies.

  • HELP: Setting Chapter Markers in DVDSP - exactly to where the playhead is?

    Hi
Can the chapter markers in DVDSP be moved frame by frame? When I try and do this, to keep it exactly where the playhead is it won't let me. I have the Chapter marker window up and put in the exact timecode of say 00:01:34:12, but it will just jump from say 00:01:34:08 to 00:01:34:20 . I just need it to be pretty exact for this one maker due to the music. Any suggestions as to how this can be done in DVDSP? If at all?
I'm trying to get this project out, (i've had major troubles with the dissolve quality exporting from Compressor) and if I can do this all will be ok to get it to my client! Stressing a little as I've been trying to complete this for the last 4 days!
    Thanks. Margie

Can the chapter markers in DVDSP be moved frame by frame?
Sorry, that's no possible from inside DVDSP. You can do that in FCP and/or Compressor before encoding your movie. Read the next info that was taken from DVDSP User MAnual:
Placing Chapter Markers Exactly Where You Want Them
Adding markers in Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express, iMovie, or Compressor offers the
potentially large advantage of allowing you to position them on the exact frame where
    you want them to appear.
When adding markers to a track in DVD Studio Pro, you can only place them at GOP
boundaries. This means that you will often not be able to place them exactly where
you want them. When you place the markers with a video editor, the embedded MPEG
encoder automatically forces an I-frame at that position, placing a GOP boundary
exactly at every marker and providing perfect marker placement. Markers placed in
Compressor before using it to encode the video are also perfectly placed.
    Hope that helps !

  • Automatic Chapter Menus

Encore CS3.2 under XP SP3 plus PS CS3.
I've been looking at using the automated generation of Chapter Menus available in CS3 for buttons without video thumbnails.
Using a standard submenu template generates approximately what I was expecting, but somewhat jumbled main/next/previous results across multi-page lists.
But with my own menus made in PS CS3 using the same the layer order as samples with all other aspects of the specified layer set headings as per the manual and samples, and setting the button property options to match those of the supplied samples, I can generate chapter menus OK but without the chapter names automatically entered into the buttons.
I can find nothing in the help files or on this forum on this issue, nor elsewhere on the web.
Has anyone cracked the subtleties of automatic chapter menus with custom starting menus? If so, what vital, but non-obvious, step(s) am I missing?

So, from what you are saying, when you share iM with iDVD, it creates the .dv file but actually creates the DVD from the movie project file, and the .dv file is in support of the project file ? Let me review:
    In iMovie:
There is a Share (note capitalization) option that allows you to export as digial video (.dv). It is QuickTime Full Quality. Share/Quicktime then use pop-up for QuickTime Full Quality.
There is a Send to iDVD option which launches iDVD and you craete a new project. That new project will link to the iMovie project.
I normally use Send to iDVD, but when "issues" have popped up, I use Share to QuickTime, drag that file into a new iDVD project. I had to do that when I corrected a typo for a chapter marker.
which I put on my desktop.
I would save the iMovie project to: User/Movies.
Its that .dv file I've been dragging into the movie pane in iDVD. You seem to be saying it should be the project file.
You can drag either into the iDVD main menu. HOWEVER, the .dv will be minus chapter markers.
If I drag the .dv file back into iM, add chapter markers, save, then I can then drag the project file into iDVD and it will create the chapters where I want them.
    Yes.
Why am I exporting to .dv if I don't use the file for anything.
Normally, you wouldn't need to do that unless you have some sort of "issue" in iDVD or while encoding with iDVD. Like getting a error message. Recall my mention of the typo change?
Creating the .dv file also creates a "stream" file, so you don't have to worry about putting chapter markers outside transitions, etc. But don't put one within the first 2 seconds of the beginning of the timeline.

  • How to use chapter markers in imovie

When I make a movie in i-movie with "chapter markers" and then transfer it over to i-tunes to play on my i-pod touch. The titles can be seen on my i-tunes but not on my i-pod touch ver 2, I can see the chapter markers but then are all "Chapter 1, Chapter 2 etc...not what I named them. • Chapter Markers with thumbnails do not appear on Share to DVD

I am using Final Cut Pro X 10.0.8 and am producing a DVD for a 1:58 minute dance recital.  There are 2 acts and for each act I created seperate projects to make it easy to group the two camera content.    Each act has 25 - 30 performaces and using the Marker command I added a Chapter Maker at the start of each new song with a custom title.
Once I had both Acts created as two projects, I then created a Compond Clip for each and then created a new project called DVD Master and droped the two compond clips into the timeline.    I confirmed the chaptermarks and the names and thumnail locations are intact in both.
Next I go back to the project view - select the DVD Master Project and goto Share/DVD - The dialog shows both the settings and optiosn for a black or white menu and when I click on the Chapter I see a mini thumbnail that shows the menu but they are all labeled Chapter 1, 2, 3, etc  no custom names.
I go ahead and render the DVD to a HD Image file, and when I launch the DVD play the disc plays fine but the chapter names do not show up, the chapter menu for that matter does not show, and on the player when I hit the forward button I jumps to Chapter 1, 2, 3 etc    - No names or thumbnails.
What do you think I am doing wrong here?

The chapter markers are "inside" each compound. When you place these compounds in a new project timeline, they do not automatically migrate or bubble up to the new project. You may get a clue to that by simply looking at the timeline: no markers are visible!
This may be confusing, since you are allowed to put chapter markers anywhere.
But in the end only the chapter markers that are placed directly in the timeline from which you export will be present in the dvd. Bottom line is: you have to place this markers in your final project timeline.
One other option is to not use compounds at all; instead copy and paste everything from each subproject directly to the master project. This way the markers will be at the top level of your project and they will work. The drawback, of course, is that you get a complex timeline without the neatness of hiding each part inside a compound.

  • Premiere CS4 DVD Chapter Markers Not Exporting

The Encore chapter markers do not appear when I import the files into Encore. I am exporting with the "MPEG2-DVD" preset and importing into Encore.  I tried Dynamic Link in both directions to/from Encore. btw, Dynamic Link "Send to Encore" creates a new Encore project. I want to add to an existing project.
I see no settings in the Media Encoder prefs or in the Main Concept "H.264" preset. This used to be automatic. What am I doing wrong?

Make sure you used Encore DVD Markers in your Pr sequence and not just ordinary sequence markers.
Make sure you named the markers and didn't leave the Name field blank.
Make sure you export XMP Metadata like so:
And to add more than one Pr sequence to En, or to add Pr sequences to an existing En project, you have to start from inside En.  Open the En project and use the File | Adobe Dynamic Link command.
