Automatic Chapter Menus

Encore CS3.2 under XP SP3 plus PS CS3.
I've been looking at using the automated generation of Chapter Menus available in CS3 for buttons without video thumbnails.
Using a standard submenu template generates approximately what I was expecting, but somewhat jumbled main/next/previous results across multi-page lists.
But with my own menus made in PS CS3 using the same the layer order as samples with all other aspects of the specified layer set headings as per the manual and samples, and setting the button property options to match those of the supplied samples, I can generate chapter menus OK but without the chapter names automatically entered into the buttons.
I can find nothing in the help files or on this forum on this issue, nor elsewhere on the web.
Has anyone cracked the subtleties of automatic chapter menus with custom starting menus? If so, what vital, but non-obvious, step(s) am I missing?

So, from what you are saying, when you share iM with iDVD, it creates the .dv file but actually creates the DVD from the movie project file, and the .dv file is in support of the project file ? Let me review:
In iMovie:
There is a Share (note capitalization) option that allows you to export as digial video (.dv). It is QuickTime Full Quality. Share/Quicktime then use pop-up for QuickTime Full Quality.
There is a Send to iDVD option which launches iDVD and you craete a new project. That new project will link to the iMovie project.
I normally use Send to iDVD, but when "issues" have popped up, I use Share to QuickTime, drag that file into a new iDVD project. I had to do that when I corrected a typo for a chapter marker.
which I put on my desktop.
I would save the iMovie project to: User/Movies.
Its that .dv file I've been dragging into the movie pane in iDVD. You seem to be saying it should be the project file.
You can drag either into the iDVD main menu. HOWEVER, the .dv will be minus chapter markers.
If I drag the .dv file back into iM, add chapter markers, save, then I can then drag the project file into iDVD and it will create the chapters where I want them.
Yes.
Why am I exporting to .dv if I don't use the file for anything.
Normally, you wouldn't need to do that unless you have some sort of "issue" in iDVD or while encoding with iDVD. Like getting a error message. Recall my mention of the typo change?
Creating the .dv file also creates a "stream" file, so you don't have to worry about putting chapter markers outside transitions, etc. But don't put one within the first 2 seconds of the beginning of the timeline.

  • How do I automatically create additional chapter menus in Encore

I have built a menu in Photoshop. It has four window frames which will represent the chapters from 1 - 4 and will be motion menus. I have brought it into Encore CS4 and verified that it will work. I am able to select each window which are labeled Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, and Chapter 4. I am also able to link each window to a chapter in my timeline, render it, and each window does show motion video correctly.
What I am now trying to do, is to add additional menus for the remaining chapters of the video. I am unable to figure out how to do this without going back to Photoshop and creating a new menus which show the additional chapters, and then bringing them into encore as additional menus.
From what I have read, it seems that encore is supposed to be able to do that for me automatically. One of the ways I tried was to go to the menu section and try to create a menu index, and when I click on that, I get a window that opens up and a window opens up which says "The chapter index could not be created because the current menu does not contain any chapter buttons." Perhaps I am not understanding that message correctly. When I select the different chapter areas on the menu, a selection window does surround that area. I thought that indicated that this area was a button. Can someone help me understand what I'm doing wrong?

    Hi Bill,
Thank you. I will use your procedures, however h
ere is the place where I read about the automation I was attempting. Am I reading it wrong about what I can do with this procedure? It appears to allow me to take my original menu and using the steps shown, Encore will create additional menus and links all my additional chapter points.

  • Video asset Motion in chapter menus

I am nearly finished with a large project for a client, where the main movie length is about 90 minutes. I just noticed when going through to check all my menus before burning that it appears that at about the 45 minute mark the video assets assigned to each chapter have all become frozen at a certain point and are no longer in motion.
I'm glad I was able to identify the issue and am hoping there is some easy way to resolve this, so that the motion continues in all the little chapter menus till the end of the film. There are about 24 chapters in all, and the motion stops about half way through these.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I also just wanted to follow up and add that I think the issue is even weirder. I am going through in DVDSP and watching the full length cut from the point at which the chapter menu is giving me trouble and noticing that when I pause it, a freeze frame appears with an image that is not at that moment of the menu, but at an earlier point.
What is going on???? Please help!!!!

  • Automatic Chapter Points

Can you set FCP to create automatic chapter points at the beginning of every clip that you import?
I have seen this done in non-pro programs and wondered if FCP can do it also.
I am importing 50 photos and want to set a chapter point to each one.
    Thanks for the useful tips!!!

As a test... try this from some notes I saved... and, to create a dual layer, you MUST use the Run as Administrator option
Create an ISO (Encore) or folder on your hard drive (Encore or Premiere Elements) and then use the FREE http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download to write files or folders or ISO to disc for DVD or BluRay (send the author a PayPal donation if you like his program)
Imgburn will read the ACTUAL disc brand from the disc, which is not always the same as the box label (Memorex is notorious for buying "anything" and putting it inside a Memorex box)
When you write to disc with Imgburn, use the SLOWEST possible speed setting, so your burner has the best chance to create "good, well formed" laser burn holes... since no DVD player is required to read a burned disc, having a "good" one from a high quality blank will help

  • Advance chapter menus without a button?

Does anyone know where I can find advice about scripting a command to change menu pages by using the remote's up or down arrows?
IE: on a menu with multiple chapter selection buttons, I want to be able to click through from top to bottom and upon reaching the last on that page, click down again to change page to the next group of buttons.
I've seen it done before but cannot find any information on it now.
    Thanks for any help!

    Keirene:
You can get that without any scripting! You just have to assign an Auto Action to yhr NExt Page button of your menu. This info is from DVDSP User Manual:
Auto Action: If you enable Auto Action for a button, it will activate automatically as soon as it is navigated to, without the viewer needing to press Enter. This is useful in menus, such as scene selection menus, in which you use Next and Previous buttons; you can assume that if viewers navigate to the Next or Previous button, they want to activate it.
You'll find this setting in the Advanced Tab in the Button Inspector.
Search in the PDF USer Manual for "Auto Action" and you'll find detailed info.
    Hope that helps !

  • Automatic Chapter Numbering?

I'm looking for this option and I don't know if the name I gave it is actually correct so let me explain what I want.
In word you can do this and then your get something like this:
    1. Title example
    1.1 Subtilte example
    1.1.1 Another subtitle example
    1.2 Subtitle example
    1.1.1 Another subtitle example
I think you get the point now, in Word this gets automatically done so please tell me how I can access this in Pages
    Thanks a lot!

Depends on how you 'made up the whole document.'
If you've applied the same List Style to all of the lists in your document, you can replace that style with the new one,
If you've formatted the lists 'manually,' then you'll need to do some manual 'un-formating' to get the lists back to a 'plain' state like this:
    Main heading 1
    lev 2 head 1
    lev 3 head 1
    Main heading 2
    lev 2 head 1
    lev 2 head 2
    etc
Then select the whole list and apply the tiered list style.
Then set the level of each line by starting each with tab characters, using one fewer than the level of that line:
    Main heading 1
    tab lev 2 head 1
tab tab lev 3 head 1
    Main heading 2
    tab lev 2 head 1
    tab lev 2 head 2
    etc
Numbers will convert this into a tiered list similar to the one in my post above.
More information on Tiered Lists is available in the Pages '09 User Guide, which you can download through the Help menu in Pages. Tiered Lists are discussed in Chapter 6, Working with Styles.

  • IDVD does not create chapter menus or recognise chapters

    Hello,
I have created chapters in Final Cut Pro 5.1, exported my movie as a QT file (with 'include all markers' ticked). QT recognises the chapters, with a little drop down menu at the bottom of the window, complete with my chapter titles.
However when I import into an iDVD project - nothing. No sub menu, and apparently no chapter recognition (if I hit the chapter skip arrow when playing, the movie ends and goes back to the menu).
I've checked the obvious - that 'create sub menus' in on in preferences.
I'm now at a loss, and would very much appreciate some help.
    Thanks in advance,
    James.

    Some more info.
Because the project I am working on is very complex, over an hour with multiple video and audio tracks, I tried something else...I cleared on the existing markers, exported the movie clean. Then started a new FCP project, imported the self contained movie and placed fresh chapter markers (obviously now it just has one video track and two audio tracks).
But the same result...QT player sees the chapters, but when I import it into iDVD no chapter sub menu is created.
I do have DVD Pro, but have never used it. Is there a way of importing my iDVD project into DVD Pro, to give me a head start and then I can try and get the chapter sub menu working in there (don't think I have the time to create and entire DVD project in Pro, as I am unfamiliar with it)?
    Any more help gratefully received.
    James.

  • Chapter Menus - question!

    Hi
I know this has already been asked in previous threads, but as of yet there has not been a definitive answer...
I know iDVD is limited in its function but I would really like to know if it is possible to have multiple pages to a chapter menu... I know you can do it using DVD Studio Pro, but I would like to use one of the iDVD 6 themes that isn't available there.
To explain - I'd like to put the first 6 movies/chapters on the first page, with a right arrow going to the next 6 items, and so forth... Is this possible?
    Thanks!
    :-Joe

    Follow-up:
It took a long time to sort, but I rendered out all my menus in iDVD to a disk image, which I then ripped out using MPEG Streamclip... I used After Effects and Photoshop to add page numbers to the menus, also using Photoshop to create a layer for buttons. I then imported the whole lot into DVDSP and laid the whole lot out exactly how I wanted it.
The results looked perfect... However, my latest problem is that all the edits I've done (uncluding the menus) have resulted in the field dominance being reversed, and although it looked fine on my laptop screen, when played through my PAL TV everything flickers
So now I am on a mission to find out how to flip the field dominance back from lower to upper... I've tried using JES but it didn't seem to do the trick (although I could be using it incorrectly).
I have posted a new question about this here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1102790
If you have any knowledge of how to do this, I'd be very grateful for some information!
    Cheers
    :-Joe

  • Automatic chapter button

After I have imported a timeline into a project, it automatically gives me a chapter marker on the timeline, roughly, two seconds into the project. When this happens, the videos, obviously, start from that very first chapter marker.
The problem is that I obviously want the video to start from 00:00 on the timeline rather than from the first chapter.
My means of curtailing this problem is by simply dragging that first chapter button all the way to the left at 00:00.
My question is this: Is there anywhere in the settings that will keep from this chapter button from showing up two seconds on the timeline? Is there something in the preferences or the presets, perhaps, I can change to curtail this small problem? This way, I can import the timeline without having to worry about dragging the chapter marker to 00:00 on the timeline.

You have no direct control over the automatic generation of this poster frame - this is done so that if you link to a video thumbnail button, the video in the button won't be a black frame (and it's only generated if the chapter is in black). However, as I said, this will not affect where the chapter begins...playback will always start from the chapter, not the poster frame.
If you don't like the auto-generated poster frame, either drag it to a frame you like, or delete it (drag it back to the chapter).

  • Automatic Chapter Markers

Is there a way to dump my video onto idvd and have it automatically make chapter markers at each clip break?

Will iMovie or iDvd add a chapter marker every time the record button is hit on the camera/ camcorder? Manually? ..... Yes. Automatically? ...... No.
If I'm not mistaken there's a 99 limit to the number of chapters that can be added to any given movie within iDvd. Most of my own shoots (weddings) would exceed this particular limit. But I can understand where it would benefit your type of on location shooting for football games.
You may wish to make such a recommendation directly to apple since most of the time they rarely read these forums:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/idvd.html
You can have iDvd set interval chapter markers every so many minutes apart like this:

Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

  • Creating Chapter Menus - need MAJOR help

I have the Compressed movie imported into my assets.
I have dragged the movie into the menu, asked it to create a track.
I have created chapter markers in the timeline.
I even have a button ready to go for creating a chapter index.
I have created a template for all my chapters.
But I can't seem to figure out how to now create multiple menus and indexes of chapters? Nothing seems to drag here or there. What major, obvious step am I missing?

Try it the other way round...
Add your asset to your timeline, then add the chapter markers. Once done switch to outline view and drag the track icon into the menu view. Hold it a moment until the sub menu pops up, and choose the second option - 'Create Chapter Index'. After that, select the theme from the options presented.
This should get you nearer to where you want to be! Good Luck!

  • Creating chapter menus on FCP & sending to my project on iDVD

    Hi,
I have tried to create chapter markers on FCP for my project and then made a quicktime movie which i then sent to idvd.
Problem is, i do not get what i expect on idvd which is a submenu with the chapters. I just get the project.
I have read up on FCP for chapter mrks and also idvd but obviosly somethings going wrong.
    Thanking you in advance,
    Maz

Assuming you are using FCP 3.0.2 or later, is this how you exported your QT movie from FCP > iDvd? (if you selected something else other than what is shown below, then it can be problematic for iDvd).
Hope this is helpful but if not come on back.

  • Chapter Menus for a movie in iDVD08

I have pictures and video from a vacation. I want the videos and pictures to play all the way through, but I would also like to be able to pick a "chapter" to start at (like Hollywood DVDs). I assume that to make everything play all the way through I need to create one movie in iMovie with the pictures and video all included in the order I want it in. I then brought that movie into iDVD08 and said for it to define chapters every 5 minutes (not exactly what I want, but it will do).
How then can I have those iDVD defined chapters on a separate iDVD themed page so that I can go to that page if I do not want the whole movie and select the chapter I want to jump to.
I am assuming that to really do what I want to do I would have to shell our the $1200 for DVD SP.
    Thanks,
    Brian

Does pulling the movie into GarageBand decrease the resolution?
If I do this will I be able to get iDVD08 to recognize the chapters and make a menu for the chapters?
    Thanks.

  • Red box and chapter menus

I've been working on a project, but have ran into some problems. My project's chapters take up two pages of the menu, but the music and video previews won't play on the second page. And when I was trying to figure that out, a red box appeared on all of my menus. I can't get it to go away, even in the preview mode.

Does the red box look like this one?
if so, simply go to "view" on the top menu bar, scroll down to "Hide TV Safe Area".
You may want to verify that all buttons and text objects fall within this red box for best results.
Hope this helps but if not just come on back. Good luck.

  • Exporting F C E Prject to IDVD With Chapter Menus

How do I Export my Project from final Cut Express to IDVD where it will show chapter menus

    Do this in your Timeline.
Where you want the marker hit the "M" key twice to bring up the Marker submenu. Name the marker. Select Chapter Marker and number it (do not erase where it say <Chapter> that does not show up)
When you are done placing your markers, make sure nothing in your Timeline is selected
Export as Quicktime Movie, NOT Quicktime Conversion. Select Chapter Markers.
Take that QT movie and drop it into iDVD
