Automatic Duck and Field Dominance
Hello,
Here I go again with the field dominance issue:
I am trying to import a sequence from FCP into After Effects using Automatic Duck xml import plug-in. (Highly recommend this for all FCP users who finish in AE!)
When I import the xml into AE, even if I have assigned FIELD DOMINANCE: NONE to both clips and sequence in FCP5, the footage get interpreted as LOWER FIELDS in AE.
It makes a huge difference, but I can't figure out how to import the footage into AE so that the footage can be interpreted as frames rather than fields
Thanks in advance.
You need to edit or ignore AE's interpretation rules.txt file, it is installed near the After Effects application. The user guide used to explain this, this information must have made its way out of the use guide.
I recommend you force AE to ignore the interpretation rules file. Rename it with the ¬ character in front of the name (¬ is Option-L), any file or folder whose name starts with ¬ is ignored by AE.

Understanding Seq. Settings as Related to Frame Rate and Field Dominance
Hello All, I pondered just how to ask this question and have studied the FCP manual, especially Vol. 4
Pages 361 on. My HD project is a mix of stills and live video. The video was shot on a HV20, green
screen, captured thru an Intensity Card as Prores. (DV Matte Blast does the keying rather well).
The sequence settings are 1080i with an editing time base of 29.97, this matches the live footage. We
are getting close to the question! I noticed that I can change the field dominance to NONE, and add
my video to the timeline and still have a gray bar and good playback. I know Final Cut is doing a lot of
tricks in the background, but I would like to be sure that my sequence settings are not going to come
back and bite me
Is the net effect producing, on output, a progressive image? When I output to a QT movie I can choose
29.97 or 30 FPS. This project is not for broadcast, it will be played back off a computer, or Apple TV
in a museum setting.
I know that this is my mission, and any help in a better understanding production path is appreciated.
Thank you, TomWell, I was recommended to do that when using in animation.
I am very new on the AEP and FCP, so some of my friends who works on AE on PCs (I am in Brazil at the moment and few have MACs to help me)and AVID told me to change the frame rate in the composition to 60, render the 2 fields starting with lower (for TV purposes) and do the final render in 30 Frames. The reason is that the 2 fields would blend perfectly and the animation would not be shaking at the end.
Is that another simple way to do that?
I just did a test to see the final result on the DVD: got the movie with no compression and save it with DV-NTSC compression and imported to IDVD. The lines have disapeared when viewing on the play mode. -
Field Dominance and De-interlacing: what settings to use?
I've been trying to read about, and understand, the issues of deinterlacing and field dominance/order, but I'm having problems and don't yet see what the clear solution is.
I'm shooting DV footage with a consumer grade camcorder:
Capture Preset: DV NTSC 48 kHz
Sequence Preset: DV NTSC 48kHz
720x480 NTSC DV
QT Video Compressor: DV/DVCPRO-NTSC
The problems are "teeth and vertical lines" in the quick movements and transitions, but fixing one (by changing the "Field Dominance" setting in the Sequence) makes the other slightly worse, it seems.
Or, maybe I should be using the de-interlacing filter on everything? I haven't found clear instructions about what destination material this should be used for...
I'd be grateful if someone could look at this web page containing examples of what I mean:
http://www.karma-lab.com/images-pub/apple-q/fielddom_nt.html
Picture 1: NTSC DV frame, from sequence set to "Lower (Even)"
Picture 2: NTSC DV frame, from sequence set to "None"
Picture 3: frame from "Cross Zoom" transition in "Lower (Even)" sequence
Picture 4: frame from "Cross Zoom" transition in "None" sequence
Questions:
1) What are the correct settings? it would seem to be "None", because otherwise my transitions all have "teeth" and look like somebody is viewing it cross-eyed, even at full speed you can see the teeth in the transitions. But if I set it to none, then it seems that quick movements of the people in the videos get slightly more "teeth" to them...
2) I am producing web video (quicktime/flash video movies). Not for TV or broadcast. Am I supposed to throw the de-interlacing filter on everything?
with "lower", it's jerky (half the frames missing, I guess) but the "teeth" go away
with "flicker-free", it's not jerky, but it gets a little fuzzy looking, and I want to keep things "crisp"...
I need less advice on the theory, and more advice on "set it like this for what you are doing." I've read some really technical explanations, and I understand why interlacing exists etc., but not exactly what I should be doing to get the optimal results for my needs, i.e. simply good-looking web video with decent motion and transitions, shot from a consumer level DV camcorder.
Thanks for reading!
G4 Dual 800 QuickSilver / PBook G4 Titanium Mac OS X (10.3.9)What are the correct settings?
Since you mention that you've shot your material on a consumer-grade camcorder, that would mean that Field Dominance – in your FCP Sequence Settings – should be set to Lower. If you use None – and I'm sparing you the tech talk here – then you're basically rendering out at a reduced quality (as the last pic in your link demonstrates)
I am producing web video (quicktime/flash video movies). Not for TV or broadcast. Am I supposed to throw the de-interlacing filter on everything? with "lower", it's jerky (half the frames missing, I guess) but the "teeth" go away with "flicker-free", it's not jerky, but it gets a little fuzzy looking, and I want to keep things "crisp"...
If you really want to keep things crisp, you best quality option - within the Final Cut Studio suite of tools - is to Export Using Compressor, with the Deinterlace option in Compressor 2.x's Frame Controls to Better (Motion Adaptive) while setting your Output Fields to be Progressive (presuming that you'll exporting to QuickTime first, then converting to Flash. Having said that, this type of conversion can take a long time to process and may not be suitable if you're under a serious time constraint.
Otherwise, the speediest option is indeed to slap a Deinterlace filter onto everything (or nest your sequence then place the filter on the nest) but the quality isn't always what folks would like. -
I shot footage using a Canon XA10 and there are issues with the HD quality not looking as crisp as it should. I am trying to make sure the settings in Final Cut are right. Need help confirming what should be in "Field Dominance" --- have seen discussions about making sure it's set to "none" but I'm confused as to what to do.
Also someone suggested I use "drop frames" to change from 30p to 24p within Final Cut. He couldn't explain how to do it so any input appreciated as well as any thoughts on whether this is a good option to try.If you're shooting 30p, field dominance should be set to none. Since you need to use log and transfer to bring this material in to fcp, I would assume it would be set correctly automatically. Are you sure you've set the camera properly?
Drop frames will not change 30 p to 24p. Dropframe timecode simply refers to the number assigned to each frame which drops an occasional number (not any frames) so the timecode duration is the actual duration, since 30p videoi is actually 29.97 frames per second which each frame assigned a timecode number.
This is very basic video stuff and requires some basic knowledge of video. Wikipedia is a pretty good resource for much of this stuff plus there are lots of great resources on the web. Look up interlaced and progressive video, 24p and 30p.
And as far as judging quality, you can only get an accurate view of the quality in fcp when you have a video card attached to a video monitor. The viewer and canvas are only an approximation of what the quality is. Minimally, set the canvas or viewer to 100% to get a better approximation of the quality. -
Field-Dominance automatically 'Upper', how to change?
Hi!
Recently I discovered that the Field Dominance (FD) setting of my sequence/projects is automatically 'Upper'. Also when I capture from VHS, the FD of the clips in my project is always 'Upper'.
But most of the time I want the FD to be 'Lower', because I often use PAL and DV.
I've searched the Preference menu and the FCP User Manual, but I cannot find an option where I can set the FD standard to 'Lower'.
Is there such an option or do I need to change the FD manually every time?I think so long as everything is the same field dominance and matches to your settings you're okay. The first time I came across the problem was importing DV PAL (lower ) into a sequence that was mostly SP Beta PAL (Upper) and the sequence was set for 8 bit uncompressed PAL (upper). The flickering of the DV PAL footage was only evident on the external monitor, it looked fine on the computer screen and it didn't matter how much I rendered or tried flicker filters it just wouldn't change. The only thing that worked was the Nattress "Field" plug in. It's in Filter Set 1 - http://www.nattress.com/set1.htm

Field Dominance problem and questions
I am trying to capture 24p Advanced DVCAM material. I've been using the easy setup. I've tried test captures of about 15 seconds (using capture now) which come into FCP with a field Dom. of NONE and load into my 23.98 sequence timeline with a olive green render indicator (I know I can edit with that as that is just a playback resolution downgrade). If I rewind to approx. the same start point on the tape and capture a 9 minute clip, it comes in with a field dominance of EVEN and loads into the exact same timeline with an orange render indicator. First off, that seems odd to me. Secondly, I've read in other forums that there is a possibility that I can change the field dom. of my longer clips and/or my sequence, but I'm not at all clear on it. Will changing the field dom. allow me to edit w/o render indicators? Do you think that it is the field dom. issue that is causing the render indicators' to appear, or could it be other issues. It seems to me that the fact that I can get the short clips to load with and olive green line, means that it probably is the field dom. issue that is causing my difficulties. Is there an error in my logic? I'm also unclear if I am able to tell FCP not to render in interlaced mode. Is that something I can do? Does it even apply to my situation?
Jerry,
Thanks for the reply. I've been "assured" (who knows what that means) that the material was shot advanced, but it might make sense for me to do a test to see if Cinema Tool pulldown removal solves my problem. Can I use the pulldown removal option in the FCP tools menu after I've captured or do I need to use Cinema Tool.
I must say I'm still baffled about my different length clips capturing with different properties even though I never changed any settings between captures. Any hunches on your part about that anomaly? -
Field Dominance settings for rough edit
I'm working on a project that will be finalized in HD elsewhere from a variety of sources, HDcam, Targa files, SD, etc. I'm doing the rough edit and will export an EDL (possibly through Automatic Duck to be finalized in Avid, not sure about that yet). I'm not doing any effects, just getting the right clips in the right order. I'm working from DVcam dubs only (firewire import)of the source material. I know the post house already has some of the HD material on hand and it is upper field dominant. DVcam of course is lower field dominant. Do I need to change the settings to upper field or not set, or is this something the post house will deal with when it imports the final video?
Don't change any settings... it won't affect the EDL anyway.

Which Field Dominance setting in Compressor?
Hello,
Which Field Dominance setting should I choose in Compressor, given that I shot on DV in progressive mode, and have rendered and exported to uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2? (The Field Dominance alternatives in Compressor are: "Top First", "Bottom First", "Progressive", and "Automatic".)
I am confused by this because in FCP, I believe that the correct Field Dominance setting is "Lower (Even)" (not "Progressive"), since in DV format, images are stored one field after another, even if pairs of fields were captured simultaneously, i.e. even if the camera was used in "progressive mode".
But precisely because pairs of fields were captured simultaneously when I shot in progressive mode, I suspect that the correct Field Dominance setting in Compressor is "Progressive". But perhaps I'm wrong(?).
Would someone please enlighten me?
Thanks.
RobertFor 1080i50, you should leave field dominance at Upper. The sequence field dominance (field order is a more accurate term) should be the same as that of the source footage. Stick to that rule and you'll be OK. For progressive sources it's None. For interlaced HD format sources, it's Upper. For SD interlaced sources it's Lower.
Now, in the case of 1080p25...it's progressive, but it can be carried on a 1080i50 timeline with no ill effects EXCEPT that transitions, moving titles, and perhaps certain other effects will render with the normal interlacing of the sequence format. The fix is to change the sequence field dom setting to None. Hope that makes sense. -
I've got a sequence I'm working on where the field dominance is causing me trouble.
Essentially I've got a wide view, shot on an SD/DV camera and this is intercut with footage from a HiDef/AVCHD camera. The finished output is a DVD via iDVD and looks mostly OK (although the HiDef originated footage is far superior) but some chunks/chapters have strange double-vision/lack of smoothness which I assume is incorrect field ordering. Removing all "Shift Fields" filters seemed to help a bit, implying that the automatic calculations were getting it wrong, but I still have some bits that need tweaking.
What I'd really like to know is - is there a way of determining what the setting should be without going through the (extremely time-consuming) process of creating a DVD and looking at it on a telly?
Also, I'm not sure about the difference between +1/none/-1 (I can't believe that there can be three possible options!)
Thanks!
By the way, I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but to get the best quality DVD from my HiDef AVCHD footage (Panasonic SD1), I find it's best to have the sequence at DV resolution (eg. by dragging some old DV clip onto it, allowing the "change to match clip" request and then removing the clip) before dragging the HiDef clips onto the timeline. I presume that what I'm doing is getting FCE to do the down-scaling rather than leaving it to iDVD - that does a somewhat poorer job.I must correct myself: step 2. in my previous explanation is not done by FCE, which leaves the field dominance of the clip unchanged in the sequence. In fact this step is not necessary since the field dominance of the containing sequence is used during playback and export by FCE, independent of the clips dominance.
As a result also "fixing" the clip dominance, as I suggested, is not needed.
Instead adding the Shift Field filter is mandatory (and usually automatic) whenever the clip and sequence field dominance do not match.
Piero
(Alexander I agree with you: even if the section of the manual I referred is in my opinion clear, there are other sections in the same manual that are confusing: e.g. IV-388 makes statements about field dominance that seem not correct to me, mixing up the time sequence of fields and the field dominance...) -
Field dominance setting for progressive footage?
I'm still not sure about this subject.
I film with a Canon HF100. This is shooting progressive footage. I use a Imac, therefor the footage will be imported from a achvd to .mov files.
When I import it in FCE it will give automatically a fielddominance of upper odd. I heard I had to change it to fielddominace none. By mistake I edited a project without changing from Upper odd to none and there was nothing wrong with the project.
1. Is this true?
2. And why do I have to change it? What's the (technical) reason (try to understand it) and why doens't this go automatically?
Thank you!!1) yes
2) ... field-dominance is a matter with interlaced footage ... in the older days, the many lines of a frame were splitted into two fields: even and odd lines. and funny as engineers often like to be, the odd lines (1,3,5,7,9, ... = don't neccessarily have to be the first (=dominant) field (.dv for instance: 'first' field is the even one 2,4,6,...)
progessive has no fields = no field dominance
but ..
some cams read out the chip progressive, but record the p frame as two identically i-fields! ... phewwww

Report page scaling/zoom for paper size and field width?
Are there ways to design a report, or programmatically set a report to dynamically resize based on factors such as paper size (A4 vs. Letter vs. Legal), orientation (portrait vs. landscape), and field width (e.g fields grow and shrink based on data)? We are looking at ways to dynamically choose paper size and scale. This would be similar to how Excel files can adjust for printing depending on paper, and PDF files can zoom in/out for paper size.
Thanks,
KyleWe don't want to add fields dynamically at runtime. Instead we want to automatically resize fields at runtime to properly fit data on the page. Currently with our 400 reports, data fields have gotten longer over the years so important data is being truncated. We'd like it if fields could properly grow/shrink/scale so that the data is always valid. We'd like it if the user flips from portrait to landscape, the field widths automatically grow to use the entire page. Or, if a user goes from Letter to A4, pagination still works properly and the fields get slightly wider to fit the A4 standard.
What we don't want is to have a version of the report for portrait Letter, portrait A4, portrait Legal, landscape Letter, landscape A4, landscape Legal, etc. It would be a support nightmare.
I don't know if it is possible, but I'm hoping it is. Thanks for the help.

Free Automatic Duck .AAF export plug-in not compatible w/After Effects 6.5?
Greetings,
There is a free export/import module for FCP that Automatic Duck produces for Apple that lets you export your time line as an AAF sequence. As most of you know, the AAF sequence can be imported in to After Effects and other programs that support AAF, and all of the cuts are in place exactly where they are in the exported FCP sequence. For those of you who do not know the plug-in can be found at the following address, " http://images.apple.com/movies/us/downloads/AutomaticDuckAAF.dmg.sit "
There is still an issue when importing a FCP produced AAF sequence into After Effects 6.5. Does any one know of a go around or solution to this problem?
I spend extensive time searching the film/video web community to find the answer, to no avail!!! I do not believe I am doing anything out of skew to cause the problem, but I will explain the steps that I am taking. First, I take a sequence in FCP that is CUTS ONLY, and with the sequence (timeline) itself active or selected (and not in the browser window) I go to the "file" menu -> "export" -> "Automatic Duck AAF". I save the sequence and it is parsed by the plug-in. Then in After Effect 6.5, I import the AAF sequence. Every-time, every way I have tried, I get an error in After effects that says, " After Effects: AEGF Plugin AAF: Error during parsing: Invalid document structure (5027 12) " and "Error occurred while creating project"
I really need a solution to this problem, because I have a cut that all green screen and of course is is not consistent. Exporting a QT reference is going to be a pain, so I need to get this working. Any help would be greatly appreciated.I own approximately half of Automatic Duck.

Phtmlb: space between Label and Field
Hello,
I am using <phtmlb:matrix> to arrange the fields next to one another on the view. For fields, <phtmlb:formLayoutInputField> is used in which case the label is taken automatically through binding to DDIC fields. At one particular row of matrix, it is required to break-up the cell in 3 more cells, so that I can display 3 fields adjacent to one another in the space of one cell. For this I am nesting one more matrix inside the outer matrix.
Something like this...
<phtmlb:matrix>
<phtmlb:matrixCell row = "1"
col = "1" />
<phtmlb:formLayout>
<phtmlb:formLayoutInputField>
</phtmlb:formLayout>
<phtmlb:matrixCell row = "2"
col = "1" />
<phtmlb:matrix>
<phtmlb:formLayout>
...3 fields next to one another / 3 cells
</phtmlb:formLayout>
</phtmlb:matrix>
</phtmlb:matrix>
I am able to acheive the desired output of 3 fields next to one another, but facing the following problem.
To get the inner matrix(3 fields) into effect, i need to close the <phtmlb:formLayout>.
Now, the first row properly shows all the filds one below the other with proper spacing between the label and input output field.
(Actually all the input_output fileds are placed at a distance of largest text/label in one formlayout).
But when the second row starts, the spacing between label and field is no longer taken as per the first row in above case.
Is it because since a new <phtmlb:fomlayout> is started , the spacing will be as per the elements in this new formlyout. If yes, How can I assure the same spacing between elements of two different formlayouts. I tried "fieldToLabelFactor" but since no. of fields in my page is too large, I can't afford to decide this factor for every <phtmlb:formLayout>.
Or is there any better way to acheive the required output.
Thanks ,
Pritidid u get the solution?
