Automatic Fusion Drive?
I just got a new Mac Mini, but only ordered it with the default 1TB 5400rpm hard drive. I have a Samsung 830 256GB SSD that I installed into the mini, along with keeping the 1TB drive. Upon doing the Mountain Lion recovery to install OSX on the SSD, it says there was a problem with the hard drives, I hit fix, then it starts creating a logical volume group (i think) and then it merges to two drives and it says that I have one 1.25TB drive in the computer.
Anybody else hear of this happening?
There are lots of advantages to Fusion Drives.
There are advantages to keeping the HDD and the SSD as separate volumes.
Here's the information you need to keep your current Fusion Drive, or to break it up:
http://www.macworld.com/article/2014011/how-to-make-your-own-fusion-drive.html
http://www.macworld.com/article/2015664/how-to-split-up-a-fusion-drive.html
With a 256gb SSD, you have plenty of room for all the OS's files plus applications and your most commonly-accessed data and therefore you might be better off keeping each physical drive as a separate volume. At least, that's what I'd do myself if my SSD were that large. Mine is only 128gb, though, so I get a lot of value from the automatic swapping between the two physical drives across the single logical volume of the Fusion Drive.

Fusion drive on 2011 mid Mac mini...
Hi everyone,
I understand how the new Fusion drive works. But only available on new macs.
I've been watching videos on YouTube that show how to make an ssd and hdd into one volume. And they show after the upgrade that these upgrades work. Now, I've also been hearing from other sources that it is impossible to make your own Fusion drive. That all you are doing is adding the two different drives. That the two drives don't actually don't work like I've been seeing on you tube.
I really do want to make my Mac mini into Fusion drive Mac. I don't have the funds for a new computer. I've also seen the new hybrid drives. 8gb ssd with 750 gb hhd to kind of a poor man's version of the Fusion drive.
So, I really need the advice of the experts here.
Thanks everyone,
mhh1. Fusion Drive works on OS level, or more precisely, it lays between the physical storage and the file system, therefore there are few requirements for hardware, only you need an SSD + an HDD to make it work.
2. With the two drives properly installed, boot your mac with a recovery disk (10.8.3 and later) or with the Internet recovery (which makes sure that you have the latest recovery image), the disk utility will prompt that your drives are not working correctly and needs to be fixed. Fix it as prompted (note that your data on BOTH drives will be erased, so make a backup before doing this), and you will get a fusion drive, automatically, without any further configuration.
3. Reboot and restore from your backup, you are ready to go!
Addtionally:
1. You will need to enable the TRIM support for your SSD (it's pretty important) manually (try TRIM Enabler: http://www.groths.org/trim-enabler/ ), because OS X only provide native TRIM support for Apple stock SSDs, but not for any 3rd party ones.
2. As someone said above, the RAM capacity has little relevency with the performance of Fusion Drive.
3. Hybrid only achieves a small part (read and write caching) of what Fusion Drive provides, as the SSD part is too small. Fusion Drive stores the whole OS and other frequently accessed data almost permanently on the SSD part, which means you will have most of your job done much faster. -
Can't back-up new iMac with fusion HD. The back-up proceeds to within 10% of the total storage needed and then the "of" number increases. I suspect there is a problem with backing up the fusion drive. We have a new 3 TB time Capsule. I tried excluding different parts of the software from the back-up but it didn't make any difference. I even tried exluding "invisible items" to no avail. Any ideas?
When you setup the wireless and ethernet in the computer.. ipv6 will be on automatic.. this is wrong for the latest TC firmware and airport utility. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4597
Go to the wireless and ethernet setup in preferences and change ipv6 to link local.
Once you do the big backup by ethernet the wireless will function fine for incremental.. it is obviously not estimating the size correctly..
A full back-up on the iMac would be about 650 GB. The partial updates that I have been trying start out at 115MB and keep growing indefinitely. The original back-up never finished nor have any of the follow-up attempts.
The first estimate should be the full backup but it will keep growing as the backup advances.. I would also delete any inprogress files to make sure it is not messing up .. delete even a sparsebundle if there is one for the imac on the TC and start afresh once you have ethernet connection.
See A10 here.
Pondini may have some other clues there to give you an idea of why the backup is slow or not finishing.. there is a lot of issues with TM when it decides not to work. -
Fusion drive vs ssd 256gb which is better
hoi gang, im in the market for a new mac mini. and i need some help with choosing the right options when buying it.
" i do music " and i need a mini that fast and runs at the highest possible speed when making music. and of course using it for some fotos, emails and yes internet.
so ....
specs im choosing
2.6 ghz
16GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x8GB
Now here is my problem which one do i choose?
1TB Fusion Drive [Add $250.00]
or
256GB Solid State Drive [Add $300.00]
Remember i need the mac that is the best at everything and speed is important!!!Choose the 256 GB SSD disk if you need more speed. Fusion Drive is a small flash drive and a hard disk that work together, so OS X automatically puts your most used apps and documents on the flash storage.
If you need storage, you can choose the Fusion Drive or the SSD and an external disk -
Disabling Fusion Drive and Installing Windows on SSD of Late 2012 iMac
Hi, everyone. After a two-year wait, I'm ready to buy my first iMac (was waiting for USB 3.0). Before I get into my questions, I'll give you an overview of where I'm coming from so we can keep the discussion focused.
My Usage
I'm buying an Apple computer because it is the best-looking, quietist, and most powerful all-in-one computer I can find right now, but Windows is still my preferred operating system. I've used OS X before – it looks great and I'm sure it works great for a large number of people, but it's not for me. Windows works well and efficiently for me and I have thousands of dollars of design software for Windows. I'm not interested in a virtualization solution because of my performance needs. However, I do want to keep the OS X installation, if possible, for website testing and to play around with to learn the operating system better.
What I Want
I was attempting to buy the Late 2012 iMac last weekend, but it appears the BootCamp specifications and the Fusion Drive are currently limiting my usage needs. I'm configuring the top model iMac with the i7-3770 processor, 24GB RAM (8 default + 16 from Crucial), GTX 680MX, and the 3TB Fusion Drive. I don't actually want to use the Fusion Drive, though. I want Windows 7 64-bit and OS X 10.8 installed on the 128GB SSD and to use the 3TB hard drive as storage for my music, videos, photos, and documents.
My Questions
1. I've found a bunch of posts regarding installing Windows on the Fusion Drive, but they all seem to be about putting Windows on the slower 3TB hard drive portion and/or about trying to keep the Fusion setup after installing Windows. Does anyone have a walk-through for a new Mac user on how to break the Fusion Drive configuration and install Windows 7 and preferably OS X on just the SSD?
2. I've seen a bunch of posts debating about whether Windows can be installed natively using EFI to bypass the BootCamp limitations. Is this possible? The 21.5" version is running EFI version 2.0, so I can only assume the 27" would too, but it's not been added on the Apple website yet (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237). From what I understand, Windows requires at least version 2.0 to run in EFI mode. Also, if I am able to get this method to work, will I still be able to install the Windows drivers from the OS X installation USB (or do they even come with USB drives anymore?)?
3. If I have to use BootCamp, I assume I will have to split the 3TB drive into 1TB and 2TB partitions for BootCamp to see it (so Windows can see it). So I'd have Windows 7 and OS X on the SSD, and two storage partitions on the 3TB HDD that would show up as two drives for my files that both operating systems could access. Is this assumption correct?
4. I've seen posts about OS X automatically trying to rebuild the Fusion Drive. Let's say I'm able to get Windows installed on the SSD. Will OS X, or future updates to it, ruin my Windows installation? I would hate to do all this work and then have an Apple update corrupt everything.
I know this is a long post, but I don't want to spend over $3,000 until I can be sure I can make it work for me. Thanks to anyone who can help!
iMac, Windows 7First, an advice: Boot Camp isn't compatible with 3 TB hard disks and Fusion Drive. For 3 TB hard disks, there's a workaround, but it doesn't work on a 3 TB Fusion Drive, so you won't be able to install Windows until Apple fixes this, so my advice is to wait until Apple launches OS X 10.8.3 or buy the iMac with a 1 or 2 TB hard disk and an external disk.
1. The SSD is used automatically by OS X to store the applications and data you most use, but Windows can't use it, and there's no workaround for this.
2. You can try to install Windows 8 in EFI mode, but I don't guarantee that it works. I tried it on my iMac and I started getting BSODs after some startups. Also, Macs don't use UEFI 2.0 (Macs use EFI 1.x), so you can't use Windows 8 advanced features such as Secure Boot. For Windows 7, you can't install it in EFI mode (it requires UEFI 2.0 or later)
3. Fusion Drive only allows you to have two volumes, and with Boot Camp, you can only have two volumes on your computer: one for OS X and the other one for Windows. That's because Boot Camp emulates a BIOS to make Windows run (although it isn't neccesary in Windows 8, if Apple would want).
4. First, you can't install Windows on the SSD. Then, OS X shouldn't ruin Windows because each operating system have got its space -
Will Bootcamp work with the 3T fusion drive with the Mountain Lion update?
The notes on the update say it will work with the 3T drive but in typical minimalist fashion, Apple doesn't mention whether that includes the 3T fusion drive. Why can't they just explain things fully?
anyway, does anyone have an answer?I installed 10.8.2 update today with my 2012 MBA. The details of the update include: Resolves a video issue with some VGA projectors when connected to certain Mac notebooks.
I tried using the MBA with a video projector and it found the correct resolution and connected with the projector automatically. Using detect displays in the disoplay preference pane wasn't even necessary.
I hope this is the fix I have been waiting for with the 2012 MBA.
Thank you Apple.

Fusion Drive has corrupted my drives
About a three months ago I went to do a fresh install and Mountain Lion OSx automatically fusioned my SSD and HDD drives together. After looking online how to un-fusion the drives I got my system back to normal.
Today I when to do a fresh install because I was having problems with simple things like the terminal and updating to the latest version of OSx. When I restarted the mac to do an fresh install I get an issue stating that there is a drive error in both my SSD and HDD in disk utility on the boot up screen. it then says, do I want to fix it, I ok it but nothing happens. If I come out of the boot mode and restrat the OSx normally and the go into disk utility and check my drives everything is ok, so what gives.
This stupid fusion drive thing apple added to the osx has messed up my drives and all I want is my mac back to the normal state it was when I first brought it in april.
Any help getting my drives to work in boot up would be a godsend.
Thanks in advance,
Tyrone"After looking online how to un-fusion the drives I got my system back to normal."
This would cause the issue you are describing. You corrupted your file system by destroying the logical volume.

If your volume was encrypted, the recovery partition won't be able to repair anything until it is decrypted. If you can't repair it:
According to Apple's FAQ, repairing a fusion drive erases it. Essentially, DU must reformat the drives. This makes sense:

Are the main differences between the 768 GB Flash storage and the 3 TB Fusion Drive?
Are the main differences between the 768 GB Flash storage and the 3 TB Fusion Drive?
About Fusion Drive
Fusion Drive combines 128GB of super fast flash storage with a traditional hard drive. It automatically and dynamically moves frequently used files to flash for quicker access. With Fusion Drive in your iMac, booting is up to 1.7 times faster, and copying files and importing photos are up to 3.5 times faster.* Over time, as the system learns how you work, Fusion Drive makes your Mac experience even better. All while letting you store your digital life on a traditional, roomy hard drive.
About Flash Storage
For maximum performance, you can configure your iMac with 768GB of flash storage instead of a traditional hard drive. Flash storage delivers up to four times the performance of a traditional drive — speed you’ll notice when you start up your iMac, launch an app, or browse your photo library.
In addition the prue flash option is $900 more the then 3TB fusion drive. -
Fusion Drive: How do I manage which software is on the Flash portion?
Any idea how I can see which software Mountain Lion is placing on the Solid State portion of my Fusion drive? Can I manaually manage it, as they suggested?
From the link below, it is suggested that once I add a partition to my Fusion drive, the "plus" symbol in Disk Utility to add additional partitions will be grayed out. You cannot partition the Flash storage. When I go to my (Apple configured) drive in Disk Utility, there is NO plus sign next to my drive. I haven't attempted any partitions. Is it possible that my drive was not formatted properly from the factory?
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5446?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_USYou don't have any direct control over the allocation of data between the physical drives. It's automatic, based on your usage pattern. If you're not satisfied with that, Fusion Drive isn't right for you.

How to restore a 3TB imac fusion drive back to its original state?
I bought a 27"imac with a 3TB fusion drive which stopped working. Ended up having to boot from the internet and since my HD stopped working and wasn't being found by disk utility I erased it using Disk Utility an re-installed OS X. Did OSX automatically get installed in the 128gb SSD drive (under disk util i only see one macintosh hard drive with another one under its first branch but there is no separate ssd drive)?
Also, since then my imac's hard drive haven't stopped making a constant cranking noise as if it's working non-stop (unless the computer goes into sleep mode). Is this normal? Anything I can do to bring it back to its original state? The problem is that I bought my computer in the US and brought it with me to my home in Brazil and over here it's going to take a long time to get it fixed or repair/replace parts if it's necessary. Any other procedure I can try on my own before throwing the towel and taking it in?
Thanks -
I'd like to create my own MAC Fusion Drive, but I'm not a dev so I need a little bit of guidance, which would also help a lot of people I'm guessing.
I am trying to follow jollyjinx's instructions, which are not that detailed. Specifically, I am trying to find the names of my two drives and I can only find one. Maybe the drives are not connected in a way to do this I'm not sure. I have a 750GB HDD and an 80GB SSD installed internally in my 2011 Mac Mini. I have been using both drives, SSD for the OS and a handful of common files and the HDD for iPhoto and iTunes libraries. A Fusion drive would be perfect!

I can only find one reference to a drive in the data, but maybe I'm missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated! So far, so good! The article steps worked perfectly. I setup the Fusion Drive and then restored from my Time Machine Backup (from the SSD). I then moved the files over that were on the HDD (which I also backed up on my external drive. Everything seems to be working great! The volume was previously named 80 SSD OS X (to differentiate from the HDD) and it is still named that, although, as you can see from the screenshot, it now has a 576GB capacity (not 750GB, which is what I thought I put in there--my memory is horrendous! lol) ....not a big deal. I consider this a huge success at this point. Thanks again for the article!

Creating a Fusion Drive Safely
Hello. I currently have a macbook pro mid 2012 13 inch with a 256 SSD start up and a 1T regular hard drive with 16GB RAM.
Even though the 1T hard drive is in the DVD drive it sort of just acts like an external hard drive as it shows up as a separate drive in finder and I am wondering if one of you amazing people can tell me how to make a fusion drive in a way that is safe and time machinable, so that for all functional purposes I just turn on my computer and it looks like I have a 1.256T system that flows perfectly.
Also if this is achieved and I can time machine back it up; in a few years when I upgrade to say the new 2T Macbook pro ssd will there be any issues importing directly from time machine if my previous computer, the one I am using now, had or has a fusion drive.
Thank you.Oh, my solid stage 256 is where the original hard drive used to be and the 1terrabye regular hard drive is in where the dvd drive used to be. If the dvd drive is the optical drive then I should be having the correct hardware configuration.
If that is correct and I do have the correct configuration, can you please share with me a recommended link or procedure to follow for making me a DIY Fusion Drive.
I talked to one of the techie guys from Simply Computing yesterday (apple authorized dealers in canada) and he said that he has this setup and it works great and when I mentioned about performance, he said that there is a slight reduction in speed and described it as, "A normal solid state is 4 times as quick and with a fusion it is 3.5 times".
If all this info is correct I would just like to proceed with it and get a recommendation for how to do it or a suggested link that has been used and proven to work for such DIY Fusion Drives. Is the one that I shared good enough for it. Thanks everyone for your kind time and attention to this. -
Creating a Fusion Drive ?
Hi All,
I have a mid-2011 iMac which I plan to install a Samsung 840 Pro SSD to use as part of a Fusion Drive setup.
Typically I backup using Carbon Copy and wil be taking a backup prior to the mod.
Once the drive has been configured...... will I need to reinstall the OSX from scratch, or is it just a matter of bringing back the Backup ??
PeteWhen you use CoreStorage to format the SSD and mechanical HD it will be a destructive format/paritioning so the new Fusion disk will look like one HD but in fact will be two under the hood. You should be able to use CC to restore your image as it will look like a single drive.
I'm not sure if that model iMac has a Fusion tool supplied by Apple or not. I think you have to use one of the many guides found online to manually configure the drives to be a single Fusion drive using diskutil at the command line. If I remember correctly, you'll need to boot with a thumb drive with 10.8.3 installation on it. Then go to the Terminal to configure the Fusion drive setup. Then you would have to find some way to run CC from a bootable thumbdrive, etc. I think you could boot the backup disk made with CC then run CC from it to clone to the new Fusion drive. That should work. Worse case scenario, you always could just re-install OS X on the Fusion drive and then use the Apple Migration Assistant to grab your data from the CC'd drive.
Either way, give yourself at least half a day in the event you run into issues and have to work around things. -
I am planning to buy an iMac 21.5 inch with Fusion drive and 16 GB RAM while i visit USA for a conference. My country of origin is India and the option of configuring to my need is not avaialble here in India. My concern is once i am back to India, will my iMac be covered by the Apple's Protection Plan if something goes wrong here in India?
I recently came across some posts regarding International warranty related issues for iPhone and iPad....hence this crossed my mind...
Waiting for response from the support group members...Thanks Ralph
This essentially means that if my iMac develops some problem (both software and hardware) in my country (India), it will be completeley attended (even the whole system requires replacement) by the AASP in India...is that what you say? -
First off I have a 3tb fusion drive.
I created a 200gb bootcamp, I tried deleting the bootcamp because I thought I messed it up and googled how to delete a mac partition which told me to use Disk Utility, did that and then erased it and somehow it got locked and wouldn't let me do anything to any partition on my hard drive (everything was greyed out)
After looking up and googling for hours I found a post saying the only way to fix it would be to go into CMD+R and go into the terminal window and type out disklist and then find the first UUID number and do something along the lines of disklist delete (UUID) i forget the exact formula. I did this, and then I had 3 separate untitled hard drives.
One in the size of 1.9gb on in 800gb and one in 121.3gb (which is the SSD), I put my time machine backup onto the 1.9gb untitled and now my computer is booting slowly (because it's no longer running off of the SSD and the original bootcamp is still there.
To be honest I am absolutely confused on what else to do!
Is there anyway I can fix this? How do I go about deleting and then re-adding the hard drives? Completely lost on how to make it back to being a 3gb fusion drive.
Thank you for all your help, I honestly really appreciate it.
I followed your instructions and got the following
