Automatic Import and "Generating Thumbnails"

I just installed imovie 08, and I have a couple of problems/questions.
1) When I start the Import Process, the Toggle that selects for Automatic or Manual import, goes to Manual and I can't change it..???
2) After some video is imported the computer takes a long time "generating Thumbnails". This never happened with iMovie HD.
Any comments, advice?
Thanks.. Gil

2) After some video is imported the computer takes a long time "generating Thumbnails". This never happened with iMovie HD.
After importing the video, iMovie '08 creates a tiny movie showing the same frames as the imported video, but in a much smaller frame. Those are the "thumbnails". This movie is used for skimming.
iMovie HD didn't offer the skimming feature so it didn't need to build these thumbnails.

  • How do i prevent an mp3 downloaded in Firefox from automatically importing and playing in iTunes?

i download a lot of music from blogs, most of it is indie label or no-label and can't be purchased from the itunes store. anyway, using firefox, when i download a track it saves it to my downloads folder and then itunes automatically imports the file and starts playing it.
needless to say this is annoying. i'm usually doing other stuff while downloading and i don't want itunes opening on it's own and playing songs while i'm busy doing other things. also, i prefer to move the files into itunes manually.
i feel like this should be simple, and maybe it is, but i can't figure it out. how do i keep this from happening? anyone?

  • Mac OS 10.6 imports and generates all thumbnails at 30 pixels max

I just upgraded from OS 10.5 to 10.6.  All of my finder thumbnail icons now have a black border and are 30 pixels maximum width.  My default view setting is 128.  Some new photoshop ones and screen captures in Firefox have no borders and display at 128 pixels maximum.  Even if I move them or simply duplicate them, the moved or duplicated images now have black borders and are reduced to 30 pixels maximum, apparently by the finder.
I have way too many images and folders to manually change them, even if the OS 10.6 finder wasn't continuing to generate 30 pixel thumbnails.
How can I make OS 10.6 make thumbnails that you can tell apart from one another?  Also, can I batch convert all thumbnails to 128 pixels resolution?
I had a similar problem on my PowerPC G5, which also downconverted all existing thumbnails to a low resolution when I upgraded to Mac OS X,
    Thanks for any advice.

Snow Leopard did that to me, also.
    And, it continued into Lion.
Apparently there is an issue with custom icons created by some 3rd-party apps. In my case, the files in question were ones I'd brought over from OS 9, and had custom icons created by GraphicConverter and ColorItEasy.
A solution I found in Lion. After installing the newest version of GraphicConverter, right-clicking (or Control-clicking) brings up a contextual menu. From the "Services..." item in that menu, selecting "Create Icon and Preview" fixes the problem. The best news is that this can be done to many files at once - select a group in Finder, then right-click and make the menu selection.
Unfortunately I could not get that to work in Snow Leopard, even after installing the latest version of GraphicConverter.
However, what did work in Snow Leopard was to select a file or group of files, right-click them, then from the "Services..." submenu select "Create icon and Preview" followed by "Remove resourcefork". Got a good icon right away. This, too, works on a group of files.

  • Automatic importing of videos from iphoto killing me!

    hello there folks,
I recently purchased an imac and am having problems in imovie. When I open the application, it automatically looks for videos to import from my iphoto library and it is killing me! I have hundreds of iphoto videos and it just sits there looking for hours with the spinning icon in the events window and I cannot do anything else. I have gone to the preferences but cannot find a way for it not to import videos from iphoto automatically when I launch the app. I do not need my iphoto videos in my events library and would prefer to do it manually. Is there anyway to stop this? Is this common or does my machine have a problemo?
thanks so much. I even left it overnight and it is just sitting there looking for video like a drooling zombie.

iMovie will automatically scan and generate thumbnails for any movies you have added to iPhoto upon launch. If you don't want it to go through that cycle (which should only happen when you add new movies, not every time you launch), remove the movies from iPhoto.
You can easily remove all the movies from iPhoto by doing the following:
    1.) Launch iPhoto
2.) Go to File > New Smart Album
3.) Set the Smart Album to use the following parameters: "Photo" "is" "Movie"
__This will gather all the movies into one place
4.) Make a new folder on the desktop
5.) Drag all the movies from the Smart Album you created to the folder on the desktop. This will copy them out of iPhoto.
6.) Highlight all the movies in the smart album and press command + option + delete.
__This will delete all the movies.
__Now you can open iMovie and it will not have any iPhoto videos to index.
__In the future when you import movies to iPhoto, immediately drag them out and delete them to avoid this behavior in the future.
    Hope that helps.

  • How can I (automatically) import new photos of the photostream on my local disc (Mac)? Don't want to use new icloud service. Simply import.

    New Photo app on Mac.
How can I (automatically) import new photos of the photo stream on my local disc (Mac)? Don't want to use new icloud service. Simply import.
With iPhoto every new photo was automatically imported and saved on my local disk (with "full resolution" that's what I only need). In the new photo app I have still my photo stream and when I move a photo (drag and drop from the photo stream) to a new album it indicates a (plus). My understanding is that the photo is now copied to my local disk. But when I deleted the photo in the photo stream it was also deleted in the album !?
If that is the case I can use the photo stream only until I reach the max of 1.000 photos, then I have to delete photos and I will have no copy left.
How can I "physically" copy a photo of the photo stream to my local disk? I just want to "transfer" all pictures taken with Ipads, Iphones to my central storage on the Mac. Please don't propose to connect it via iTunes (cable) to the Mac.
    Any other suggestions?
    thx
    -Tom

The amazing device cannot do it because no amazing developer has written an app for it.  There is some interest, others have asked, but i have a hunch that the market is fairly limited, and no developer has jumped at the chance just yet.
Any sort of tethered approach means try to feed the material to the pad thru the cck.  Which means the app would have to use the allowed/existing cck pathway in a manner that does not violate the sandbox rules.  That may be the problem.

  • Regarding MDM Import and Syndication Server

    Hi,
I have earlier worked in MDM Import Server.
Today, I successfully did MDM Syndication by
    MDM Syndicator.
Now, the point is I need to do Import and Syndication
by MDM Import Server and MDM Syndication Server.
    The MDM Version is 5.5.
Now, the point is under my installed directory:
    F:\MDM SERVER\Server
    in mds.ini file:
I need to give the following path:
    Distribution Root Dir=F:\MDMSER~1\Server\Distributions\
I think other than these I don't have to do any configuration
    in mdis.ini or mdss.ini.
Also, I have already inbound and outbound ports made and linked
    to inbound and outbound maps.
Is there any more configuration needed?
    Regards
    Neha Singh

    Hi Neha,
There are many configuration needed to complete the Automatic import and syndication using MDIS and MDSS.

  • Package(s) Automatically imported?

I am new to Java and studying for the SCJP. I ran across a statement that java.lang is automatically imported and it occurred to me that I have not been importing java.io in my initial test programs, but System.out.println() works... so my question is what packages are automatically imported in Java? Thanks.

Thanks for the response - here's how I arrived at my question:
I was looking at a simple example in a book:
    import java.io.*;
    public class DrinkJava {
    public static void main(String args[]) {
    System.out.println("Do you like to drink Java?");
I wondered what the import of java.io was for since I haven't been using it, so I went ahead and looked online at the Documentation > APIs > Core API Docs 6 and found "System" via All Classes. The "out" field is static PrintStream, and when I drilled down on it, the PrintStream class is in the java.io package. I noticed the class hierarchy showing it inheriting from the classes java.io.FilterOutputStream, java.io.OutputStream, and java.lang.Object. At this point I wondered if both packages were being automatically imported so the java.lang System class could use the java.io PrintStream class.

  • Photostream - do you automatically import into Aperture?

Interested to hear from some advanced and pro Aperture users as to whether or not you have your Photostream automatically import into Aperture, I've done this without putting much thought into it but its led to having many unneccessary photos in my library, plus I import my iPhone photos manually from time to time (paranoid Photostream has missed some I guess).  Thanks.

So should I be assured that no matter what all photos I take on my iPhone are automatically imported and hence I can stop manually importing them from time to time and hence causing more duplicates etc?
I am not sure, if I understand your concern correctly.
When you are taking photos with your iPhone, they will upload to the photo stream and be stored in iCloud.  But you have plenty of time, befor ethey will upload. Photo Stream will only start the upload, when the iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi, when the battery is properly charged, and when the camera.app is closed.
Your mac will import the photos only once. when you import from the iPhone and the photos have already been downloaded from the stream, they will not show in the Import panel.

  • Why Constantly Generating Thumbnails?

Starting yesterday, PSE9 organizer is constantly generating thumbnails. And very slow to show images. I let it run all night and it was still "generating thumbnails" even though all showed. Looks like it's stuck in a loop. What to do?

I think this is due to loop caused by corrupt files in the file list that got through the screening process.
If you exit during this loop it sometimes leaves the elementsorganiser.exe running as a an orphaned process and the you may not be able to restart the organiser unless you kill the process or re-boot
The loop often continues even if you kill the process or re-boot.
    I have found three fixes:
    1. Try and find the corrupt files and remove them from the organiser, time consuming if you have a large number of files.
    2. Delete all the files in the catalogue.
    3. Create a new catalogue and open it, then try a repair on the original catalogue.
All three have worked for me; the orphan process and generating thumbnails loop disappear
    Hope this helps

  • No Automatic Import

I have Aperture photostream turned on and set up to automatically import and upload my photos.  For some reason, about two weeks ago, Aperture stopped importing my photos.  They still show up in the Photostream, but they no longer get imported into events, photos, faces and places.  They used to automatically go into a folder called Mar 2011 photostream.  I'm not sure why this has happened, nor what to do about it to get it corrected.  I can still manually drag the unimported photostream photos into my Aperture Library, but I'd prefer it do it automatically like it is set up to do and supposed to do.

    Commented on wrong thread. Sorry.

  • Automatic importing

How can I stop the automatic importing and playing of a music file?
I download legal music from several places besides the Apple music store, and I always have this very annoying problem. As soon as a song finishes downloading to my selected download folder, it is automatically imported to iTunes and it STARTS PLAYING!!! This is really annoying when I am doing something else because iTunes always jumps to the front of whatever application I am working with and forces me to stop my multi-tasking, and push stop on the iTunes player. VERY annoying if I am downloading an entire album because I have to do it for twelves songs in a row.
HOW do I turn this off? I looked in my iTunes preferences but I couldn't find the option.
    Thanks
    Erich

What software are you using to download music besides iTunes? Aquisition and Xfactor both have settings to songs after they've finished downloading.
Or if you're downloading using your web browser, your browser may have iTunes setup as a "helper application", so that it opens the song file after it's downloaded.

  • ITunes Automatic import

I frequently download audiobook files from internet sites . After downloading the file(s) iTunes automatically imports and starts playing them. I DO NOT want this to happen. I wish to control this manually. I've tried iTunes preferences but can't determin how to change this.
Please let me know how to stop automatic import and playback.
    Thanks

I have a couple of thoughts. Try this: select one of the files that you've downloaded, Get Info, then change Open with to Quicktime Player and underneath, Change all. I can't promise but it may help. Also, what browser are you using? You should be able to tell it not to open the file. In Firefox, for example, it's under Prefs>Content>File Types and then you can just have it safe the files rather than open them. I think, in Safari, Preferences>General and then uncheck Open safe files after downloading.

  • Trying to import video files.  Clock on files and hit import.  Imovie says generating thumbnails and importing.  Then after loading, no movies there.  help?

My 14 year old son is trying to import videos into iMovie.  He's done this a dozen times before with no problem.  Here is what he's doing "I went to import movies, clicked on the idv files and hit import.  On iMovie it said "generating thumbnails, and importing".  Then it gave the loading sign.  When it was done, none of the movies/videos were in Imovie.  He needs to have this done as a xmas gift for a friend by Thursday .

After much research and troubleshooting, GoToMeeting replied with the final answer: We do not support the uploading of recordings to editing software. If you are having issues uploading a recording, unfortunately, we do not have tools or steps to resolve this. It is not a supported feature. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
The no longer plan to support editing of recordings made with their software.  So, we are planning to find a new meeting provider.

  • IMovie 11: issues generating thumbnails with large import

I have a HDV tape that was in a flood, and is not in great condition (It's a sentimental family movie).  It imported OK, but iMovie recognized scenes really weird, in that it separated the 60 minute tape into so many segments (157) that it's causing fits for iMovie to generate thumbnails.  At the import, it got all the way to the point where it said it had 1 minute left -- but it stayed there for over 3 hours.  So I "forced quite" iMovie.  I relaunched it, and it did basically the same thing -- it got to a minute left, then stayed there for several hours.  So I forced quit it again.  This time it got to the point where it said 4 hours left, and I left it over night.  It was in the exact same spot this morning.  So I forced quit, then rebooted the whole computer.  When it came up this time, it said it had less than a minute, but it's now growing in time (the bar is moving towards the right, so maybe it's working...we'll see).
The problem is now, as soon as I boot up iMovie, it automatically goes into the generate thumbnails mode, and I can't do anything else with it.  So, my question is 3 part.
    1. Is there a way to get the import process done, so that I can start to edit the video.
    2. If I can't, how can I clear this project, so that when I start iMovie, I can do something else with it?
    3. I have 8 HDV tapes in similar condition (some worse than others) -- what is the best course of action to extracting all the movie that I can from the tapes?
    Thanks

By the way, here's a video of my issue:

  • Stuck on generating thumbnails for imported footage

I've got a problem with importing DV footage from a camcorder using Firewire. In my preferences, I have selected all analysis options. It's my understanding that FCP is supposed to automatically analyze the footage as it's being recorded to disk.
So, after the import process from tape completes and I close the import window, I don't see any evidence of analysis having completed, or even begun. There are no smart folders for People and Synchronization as evidence. When I go to view the background tasks, I see that Transcoding and Analysis is stuck at 0%, while Rendering (specifically, Generating Thumnails) is shown as an active task, but no progress percentage is displayed. And it seems to be stuck like that forever, even if I leave my speedy new quad core alone for hours. I don't know how long this process is supposed to take (I only import up to an hour of DV clips at a time), and whether the analysis is supposed to start after rendering thumbnails is complete, but FCP is giving no indication that it's making any progress at all, which is disconcerting.
The only remedy seems to be to close FCP, re-open it, and then manually choose Analyze and Fix on all the clips in the event browser, which then seems to work. And without a generating thumbnails phase.

Solution for Me: Follow all the above and then open and leave open, iPhoto before opening iMovie.
Background: Attempted to open iMovie-11 after a three week break, only to see it freeze after authorising it to make new Thumbnails of the videos in iPhoto. Allowed 15mins in case it was actually working behind the scenes before 'force-quitting.'
The pattern was repeated many times despite meticulously following all the advice on this thread and several others around the forum. Nothing seemed to fix the snag with many valuable hours wasted.
Usually when solving issues, I close all programmes not directly related to the problem app. (I resaon that memory and resources are better 'concentrated') I recalled that  iMovie initially grounded when trying to make thumbnails of my iPhoto videos I think after an update. So out of curiosity I opened iPhoto and iMovie loaded safely. iMovie did stumble one more time after replacing the suspected errant folders from my desktop into the Users / iMovie folder, (as in Bruce EBonus excellent suggestion above) but another 'repair permissions' and re-boot and everything has been fine since.
I hope this helps anyone suffering the same issue.
