Automatic import when connecting camera?

My PC is a Windows Home Premium 64 bit system. In one of the Adobe tutorials on importing, it sounded like Lightroom would automatically start the process when connecting a camera to a USB port. But that doesn't happen for me. I can import by starting Lightroom, clicking the import button, then selecting the camera device. Can Lightroom be configured to automatically start and select the camera device when the camera is plugged in?

I recently installed iPhoto 6. When I connect a memory card to my powerbook, iPhoto starts up and wants to import the files. I want to do this manually and don't want iPhoto to start automatically. How can I deactivate this?

Hi Michael,
Using Image Capture to download images and video clips:
Open up Image Capture which is found in the Applications folder.
When it is opened, go to Image Capture/Preferences
Under the General button choose
Camera: When a camera is connected, open Image Capture.
The next time you connect your camera Image Capture will open.
In the window that opens you will see an Options button. Click on that button to set your options.
To find out more about Image Capture (it can do a lot more) Click on Help in the menu bar when Image Capture is open.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
If you find you can't change any of Image Captures preferences or can't access any drop down menus or they are greyed out, check to make sure Image Capture is loose in the Applications folder and not within a sub folder.

Launch photo downlader when connect camera

I've got CS4, dutch version.
In the course of Lynda.com I could see there is a preference of Bridge mentioned thats allows you when a camera is connected to launch the downloader automatically.
That would be great because windows doesn't recognize Bridge as a possibillity to download (got a Canon 400D and 450D).
But .... in my version there is no such a thing in Preferences - General, only the other two "Behavior checks".
How can that be?

I'm using Windows XP.
Two stange things:
1. I dorn't have the choice of the launch poto downloader in the preferences of Bridge (it is there not at all). Strange
2. In the Windows menu for selecting a divice to upload photo's there is no Bridge. I can select Photoshop. I don't see a possibility to add a program to that list. Photoshop as a choice is working, but I want Bridge (using raw). Very strange.
Bridge is automatically loading on starting the computer.

Can I Stop Automatic Import when a CD is inserted?

Is there a way to set iTUNES so that when I insert a CD into computer, it doesn't AUTOMATICALLY import the CD? I would prefer to select IMPORT myself.
I've looked in preferences and didn't see this option (Or I missed it)...

Ive got the same problem than this people, given my camera is firewire iidc.
"Unfortunately, FireWire video cameras are not recognized as imaging sources, so Image Capture doesn't pick them up. As a result, you can't use Image Capture to prevent FaceTime from accessing this video camera"

Disable automatic import when iPhone connected

2 questions.
1. When I plug in my iPhone the import screen automatically launches. How do I disable that?
2. How do I exit out of the import screen without quitting LR entirely and restarting?

#1 -- Edit > Preferences > General > Import Options > UNCHECK the first option, Show import dialog when a memory card is detected.
#2 -- Click the Cancel button in the lower right corner OR press Esc.

Script to copy files when connecting camera?

Being ever increasingly worried about losing data, especially photos/movies of our family etc, I'd like to have some sort of script/automated process so that when I connect my camera (Canon 400D) - my iMac grabs a copy of the original images from the device and transfers(copies) them to an external drive, or if this is not possible, at least to another location.
Is this possible, and any ideas on the best/easiest way to acheive this?

FWIW - I have multiple usb drives connected, some direct into the iMac, one into my Time Capsule, and also access to my RAID NAS drive - which is where I would prefer to store them, as it offers the most secure medium to backup to.

You can use Automator to create a folder action that would import the image files into iPhoto and then copy them to a destination folder. You would, however, have to have to use Image Capture or a card reader to upload the files from the camera to the folder.
Actually, Larry's suggestion of keeping a current, i.e. daily, backup of your iPhoto LIbrary on another drive with a backup application like Synk Standard is the very best route to go. AND never let iPhoto delete the photos from the camera. Always reformat the card using the camera.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

Can't import from connected cameras in one account any more

I recently started having the following problem, which seems very solvable, but has me stumped: when I am in my main user account, if I connect a camera (usually by just mounting the SD card via a USB adapter, but all types of mounting seem to be equivalent), it shows up in the finder and I can manually copy images over from it, but Image Capture, iPhoto, Graphic Converter, etc., are unable to import images from it. I usually use Image Capture, so I'm most familiar with the behavior there:
1) Usually the card shows up, but is not selected when I launch Image Capture. If I select it, it may show some images and load preview thumbnails for a few of them before stalling out, or it might just show no images.
2) If I quite and relaunch, I either get "no devices" or I see the device and no images on it (approximately alternating).
3) If I eject the card in the finder and put in a different card, and then re-launch Image Capture, it still shows me the old card (but again, still with no images)
4) Trying to import in GraphicConverter, etc., always just lead to a spinning beach ball.
The kicker is that it works fine in other user accounts, so I know it has something to do with settings— I just can't figure out where. I've tried reformatting the card that first gave me trouble (before discovering that it was fine in other accounts, and all cards give trouble in this account). I've tried deleting the preference file "com.apple.Image_Capture.plist", and all of the "com.apple.Image_Capture.*.plist" preference files in the 'ByHost' directory.
Is there another preference file that I'm missing????

Oh- maybe it's not just in one account, after all. Things had appeared better in other accounts, but it looks like soon after Image Capture has finished trying to read/cache all the thumbnails, things hang up in the other account, too. Subsequent launches of Image Capture show either no devices attached at all, or an outdated list of devices, which can't be inspected (no images).
Could this be a problem with too many images on a card? There are about 3000 images on one card involved...

IPhoto hangs when connecting camera

I am having trouble connecting my camera to iPhoto. I have used my camera with iPhoto fine for years but has recently stopped working. When I connect the camera, iPhoto loads up and the camera appears on the left in the sidebar, but it hangs while trying to display the photos on the camera. I have the same problem with image capture. The only way I've been able to get photos off it is by copying them from the memory card in the Finder.
I have tried rebuilding the iPhoto library and have restored from a backup but it's still not working. Any ideas?
Details: iPhoto 9.1.3, Mac OS X 10.6.8.

I have had pretty much the same problems as you in both iphoto and image capture and had to use simple copy & paste in Finder to get things off the card. As suggested above reformatting the SD card on the speciifc camera was the only effective solution. I even bought a new SD card and had the same problem until I formatted that on the device specifically.
This seems (to me) to be a problem with the most recent versions of iphoto 9.1.3 & 9.1.5. By chance I have also been connecting my camera to another machine which is running iphoto 08, it has had no problem with either SD cards all the way through.

How to make iTunes not automatically open when connecting iPhone?

Hey everyone! I have the latest iTunes and the latest update for my 4S. I don't want itunes to open up when I connect my iPhone in since it's very annoying. I've been looking everywhere online and in itunes and I can't find a single thing. I look through edit - preferences, nothing is there. I go to devices, nothing. I go to my actual iPhone summary on iTunes and there is no option there. Thanks for any help!!

IMovie Crashes when connecting camera

When I connect my Panasonic PV-GS300 to my MacBook Pro, IMovie either crashes or does not recognize he camera. My IMovie is up to date. Not sure what to do here. Any help is appreciated.

where do your find the imovie.com. whatever that you deleted in the "imovie preferences."
My preferences do not give any of those choices...

it started all of a sudden.... worked fine a month ago...
i tried a new cable and that had no effect..
the "dv" comes on when i plug in the camera and the usb port works fine...

Mac freezes when connecting camera

My camera >>Nikon Coolpix 775<< is listed as compatable to Tiger but I am not having any luck with it! Everything was working swimmingly until I upgraded all my software (Tiger, iPhoto, etc) last week. Now when I connect my Nikon everything freezes up--I have to do the dreaded hard reboot. I've tried creating a new library, checked my camera's card, and looked throughout the discussion boards but am stuck. It's miserable...
Would incompatability to my camera give me such a problem? What could be causing this?

dont know if you have got your ipod working yet, but I have just managed to get mine back up and running at last!! I reinstalled my old ipod installer disc, erased the memory, and connected to my mac, it would get up to about 78 tracks then freeze again, really ****** me off, but then I charged my ipod fully and tried again, straight away all my tracks were loaded, I am so bloody pleased, took a gamble wiping memory though but had to try something!!

Why does ios 7 automatically update when connected to charger

I don't want to install ios7 but when I have connected my iphone 5 to the charger it had automatically started to download it, the only way I have found not to download it is to take it off charge, but I need to charge my phone and don't want to update it. How can I charge my phone without updating my phone to ios 7?? Someone please help, thank you

Sending offline messages, automatically send when connection established?

Hi there, I am new to the iPhone. On other phones I could compose an sms or other message offline, and it would be queued & sent when a connection was reestablished. The iPhone currently doesn't let me hit the send button while offline and if it does it quickly rejects the message and waits for me to resubmit when a connection is established.
How do I change this?
I am outside of cell service quite a bit, and need to be able to compose messages and have them sent whenever a signal is found.
