Automatic importing of videos from iphoto killing me!

hello there folks,
I recently purchased an imac and am having problems in imovie. When I open the application, it automatically looks for videos to import from my iphoto library and it is killing me! I have hundreds of iphoto videos and it just sits there looking for hours with the spinning icon in the events window and I cannot do anything else. I have gone to the preferences but cannot find a way for it not to import videos from iphoto automatically when I launch the app. I do not need my iphoto videos in my events library and would prefer to do it manually. Is there anyway to stop this? Is this common or does my machine have a problemo?
thanks so much. I even left it overnight and it is just sitting there looking for video like a drooling zombie.

iMovie will automatically scan and generate thumbnails for any movies you have added to iPhoto upon launch. If you don't want it to go through that cycle (which should only happen when you add new movies, not every time you launch), remove the movies from iPhoto.
You can easily remove all the movies from iPhoto by doing the following:
1.) Launch iPhoto
2.) Go to File > New Smart Album
3.) Set the Smart Album to use the following parameters: "Photo" "is" "Movie"
__This will gather all the movies into one place
4.) Make a new folder on the desktop
5.) Drag all the movies from the Smart Album you created to the folder on the desktop. This will copy them out of iPhoto.
6.) Highlight all the movies in the smart album and press command + option + delete.
__This will delete all the movies.
__Now you can open iMovie and it will not have any iPhoto videos to index.
__In the future when you import movies to iPhoto, immediately drag them out and delete them to avoid this behavior in the future.
Hope that helps.

  • Premiere Pro 2014 Application becomes unresponsive when importing a video from iPhoto

    Hello and good morning!
I shot some sample footage using an iPhone 5. I shot just over a minute of sample footage. I imported the footage via the USB cable and my Macbook Pro 13 (2011).
Following these steps causes the application to freeze indefinitely at the "Importing Files" dialog box.
    1.) File -> Import
2.) Select iPhoto under the Media subsection
3.) Select the movie and click import
The application just freezes until I go to the activity monitor and force quit. Then I get the "Adobe Premiere Pro has encountered a serious error." Someone should look into this bug.
    Additional Info:
Specs of the machine this happened on:
    Macbook Pro 13" Early 2011 (i7 2.7 GHz, 16GB, 480 SSD)
Specs of the machine at my home workstation that doesn't have this issue:
    Custom Built (4770K 16GB DDR3 256SSD RenderOutput 2TB SSHD Scratch 1TB WD Black) w/ 3 Dell Ultrasharps
For those of you that are curious. I doing a pilot video project of sorts. A behind the scenes video for a fashion photographer who is a friend. It was my idea since I wanted to try something new. The photographer likes the idea because its something to add to his portfolio about his work. However, for this project I'm basically on my own and I need to produce a viable product before I convince myself to invest in a decent video camera.

Thanks for the reply however, this issue is isolated to the use case I mentioned above. The video imports fine once I copy the file and import the file directly; say I copy the file to my desktop then add the file. I know about the variable frame rate issue however this isn't the case for the iPhone 5. I have encountered that issue with the NVIDIA DVR feature for capturing 3D graphics. (DAWN Demo.)
It seems this may be some kind of permissions issue since when selecting a media file through the iPhoto link in OSX finder dialog the file is located in a library package. The issue does not affect Photoshop, Lightroom, nor Illustrator (CC 2014) when importing media using the same method.
It seems like just a bug that was missed.
I apologize if I may have posted this in the wrong forum. Perhaps there is a technical or bug reporting forum? (I also am encountering another bug with AE linked clips in Premere Pro in OSX that wasn't there before.)

  • Can't import video from iPhoto or memory card

I just upgraded to iLife'11 but now I can't seem to import my videos from iPhoto. Before, I could download stills and videos to iPhoto (via card reader) and iMovie would automatically import them. Now I can still import video into iPhoto but then can't figure out how to move them into iMovie. Any suggestions?

I get a message saying "the file is and unrecognized format."
    It's just a jpeg!!!!
    What is the color profile?
    Will they open in preview?

  • Imovie 09 How do I stop Imovie from auto importing video from iphoto

Imovie 09 How do I stop Imovie from auto importing video from iphoto.
Hi I've done a lot of searches on how to do this but no answers found.
Imovie is beginning to become really slow because of the large number of video's. It takes 3 minutes to startup. Editing is sometimes slow lot's of spinning beach balls e.t.c.
I would like to only import the video I want to edit and hopefully get a quicker Imovie in the process.
My Iphoto library is about 95 Gbyte in size.
My mac has 4 gb ram and I use the internal disk.
Any other ways to work with Imovie/Iphoto are also welcome.
    regards

I won't get iMovie 9 till Tuesday, but based on what you said I may need to take some precautions. One reason I didn't like iMovie 8 is because it automatically imported everything in iPhoto library. What I'm going to do is create a new iPhoto library before importing the photos/videos from the camera. Or if you already have it in your main iPhoto library copy only the photos you'll use in your iMovie 9 project to the new library. Then start iPhoto while pressing the option key which will allow you to select the new iPhoto library you have created. Then I suppose that when you start iMovie 9 it will automatically import only the photos/videos from the new library.

Hi jt - Alex was actually referring to video clips in iPhoto not appearing in the item "iPhoto Videos" in the Events Library in iMovie - thanks for your post though (the 2 words are very similar).

  • I imported some 24P HD videos from my DSLR to Aperture but these videos do not show up in iMovie '09 for editing purposes. Although my previous 24P HD Videos from iPhoto '09 show up. Why can't I access these videos stored in Aperture library?

I imported some 24P HD videos from my DSLR to Aperture but these videos do not show up in iMovie '09 for editing purposes. Although my previous 24P HD Videos from iPhoto '09 show up. Why can't I access these videos stored in Aperture library? I assumed that like  the videos in iPhoto, I would be able to access the videos in Aperture through iMovie. Come on Apple! I am starting to get frustrated with your products here. And this is saying a lot when I have been using and loving apple products for the last 4 years.

Hi. My camera is a Canon 600D. And yes my videos are stored in the Aperture library and they are not referenced. Even then I tried to select all the videos in Aperture and clicked 'consolidate masters' and there was a messge that said all 'none of the files are referenced',... so they didn't need consolidating.
I also tried preferences> export> external video editor > choose > iMovie. And then right click on the video to edit with imovie. Even then the video didn't show up in iMovie. It seems like the only option for me is to import the videos directly to iMovie which means there will be two versions of the same file stored in my computer eating up space.
    APPLE. What are you doing?

Hi - I'm having the same problem with freeing up space on the HD. If I can't free space if I'm using any part of the clip, how can I split up the clips so that I can discard the part I won't use? This is crazy! I have only 4 GB of free space left!
Also, I've tried to transfer the project file to my external HD but I keep getting an error saying I can't transfer it. I've been told this is because I don't have enough space on the HD for the transfer. I tried a similar transfer with another computer with plenty of HD space but the same error occurred. Is there a way to break up the project file into small pieces for the transfer (I'm thinking the whole movie file is just too big)?
    Thanks for any info!

stupid! or is it me being stupid

My iphoto video formats are the kind that my DMC Panasonic Still camer Shoots.
That doesn't really help, try opening them in QT/inspector and seeing what video and audio compression is used.
My point is, they are the same format as the ones that were imported 3 days ago.
Are you sure, your camera may be capable of taking more than one type of video, does im08 still recognise the video from 3 days ago

  • IMovie not importing videos from iPhoto

I am trying to import videos from iPhoto into iMovie. It is not bringing in ( i.e. creating thumbnails for) anything after Dec 2010. The videos all show up in iPhoto and they were shot with an iPhone. Is there a date range set somewhere that I need to change. I can not even get them if I specifically try and import them one at a time through File-Import-Movies. When I try this method it lets me select the videos, but they still don't show up in my video thumbnails. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I open up iMovie and it then imports movies from iPhoto. The problem is it is missing several videos. When I select import video it imports those missing files, so I know it's not a file format issue... Anyone else seen this? Any suggestions on how to get ALL my videos into iMovie?
iPhoto will import any file that can be played in the QT Player (i.e., that is "playback" compatible). On the other hand, iMovie '08 will only import files that it can edit -- i.e. that are "edit" compatible. (Would you really want to waste your time importing files only to find that you can't do anything with them once they are "in" the application?) Your solution is to convert non-edit compatible files to compression formats that are editable -- primarily DV, AIC, M-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264. You should also note that both audio and video content must be edit compatible. For instance, many AVI files contain M-JPEG video which can be edited along with ADPCM audio which cannot be edited and so such files will not import.

  • Import video from iPhoto to the new iMovie

how does one import video from iPhoto video to i Movie for a project. This used to be simple.

In the CONTENT LIBRARY (bottom left) you should see an iPhoto item which when clicked gives you access to your iPhoto library.  Does this not include videos?  (I don't use iPhoto so cannot check).

  • Downloading videos from IPHOTO to IPAD

How do I download videos from IPHOTO that I took with my camera to my IPAD? I'm not having any issues with photos just the videos. They show up in IPHOTO. Thanks for your help
    Doug

To import the videos have to be in a format supported by the iPad. In iTunes under the Advanced menu at the time there is an item for creating iPad and Apple TV version of videos. That works for some but not a formats. Also, just be aware that the extension on the file like mp4 is not definitive enough to tell if a video format is supported by the iPad. Thee ae many variations in .mp4 format and the iPad does not support all of them.

  • Importing my video from my event library into my project library, it shows the full width of the clip, but on the viewing section, it's zoomed in and cut the sides of the video off.  How do I stop this from happening?

When importing my video from the event library to the project library, it's zooming in and
narrowing the width of my footage.  How do I stop this from happening?

In the project, double-click on the clip to open the Clip Inspector. In the Clip tab you will see an item about two thirds down labelled "Stabilization". If checked, uncheck the box "Smooth clip motion".
Stabilizing clips causes a zoomed in effect, with the extent of the zoom dependent upon how shaky the footage is. There is a slider beneath the check-box labelled "Maximum Zoom" - this can be draggged back and forth to adjust the zoom effect if desired, once the clip has been stabilized.
You may have chosen to analyze clips for stabilization when importing to iMovie (that's a choice provided by iMovie upon import). If so, it's best to turn off an option in iMovie's preferences. Go to this from the iMovie menu item iMovie>Preferences. Click on the Browser tab and deselect (uncheck) the box labelled "Automatically stabilize clips that have been analyzed".
I prefer to import clips without analyzing, as this speeds up the import process. Afterwards, in the Event you can check for any overly shaky clips, then analyze them in the Inspector. If necessary, once dropped into a Project, you can stabilize them as desired. You can also stabilize clips directly in the Project without having to first analyze them in the Event.
