Automatic itunes sync?

Hi,
what i want to be able to do seems complex to me, but probably not to many others.
Currently I have my itunes library, which is full of music, on my internal hard drive, and another itunes library, full of video, on an external hard drive.
What i want to have is my current internal library with all my music, and a library on my external drive which has all my music AND all my video. I will sync my ipod to the external hard drive library so i can choose which videos i want each time i sync. each time i add a song to my internal library (when i am not plugged into my external library for example) I want it to automatically sync to the external library when I plug it in.
can anyone give me some clues (or even better a script) that will do this for me?
any help would be great
thanks
Tom

I'm not sure about using automator to do this, but there may be a way that you could fix this problem. When you go to the itunes preferences you can choose if the files are copied to your itunes music folder when added to itunes. This will not help you in this situation as you have files in separate drives. I think this is set to default. Uncheck that. Assuming that the music in your internal drive have already been added to itunes, plug in your external drive and either drag the movies to itunes or go to file/import. Just an alias to the file should be created and they'll not be copied to your internal drive. Once the preferences for your ipod is set to copy the movies and o on, just try to sync and see if it works. Note: you must always have your external drive plugged in when syncing your ipod or when listening to a song or watching a video.
Hope this helps

I've successfully imported the videos I've shot with my iphone5 into iphoto on my MacBookPro but they're only showing up as still shots, ie the imported videos don't play! Itunes no longer opens automatically when syncing, and when I open itunes it shows that there are zero "home movies" in there, meaning that it never grabbed the videos from my phone either. What to do? Thanks!

    tl:dr?
    Really?
There was a short version expressly for people who weren't bothered to read a myriad of text.
Meh, not that it matters anymore. I ended up redownloading 70-odd albums, so I have the bulk of my music back. And I still have no idea what iTunes did with my files, but I'll make sure it never does it again.
I would thank you for the help but you were utterly useless. Oh well, carry on.

Well the iPod is supposed to be synced from YOUR iTunes music library, if you used other means to put music on there then the iPod is going to sync to only what's on your itunes music library when you connect it.
You need to put the files into itunes.
Far as your other issues, sounds like the drive is dying.

How to solve this problem that I have

i've had a few issues like this.
I've found that it is an issue with items that are already on your phone.
    several troubleshoots.
    1) uncheck everything from syncing (apps, music, tv shows, movies, podcasts, etc), try to perform a sync, it most likely will work.  Then, sync after checking each item individually (check the sync box for videos, then sync, check the sync box for podcasts, then sync, check the sync box for music, then sync, etc).  One of two things will happen, 1) you will fix the problem, or 2) you will identify exactly what part of the sync setup is the culprit.
    2) if the above doesn't work, I've found that it is likely an issue with files that are on your phone but your phone doesn't exaclty recognize (for example, I had copies of music on my phone that didn't show up in the music app, I went in on itunes and manually deleted those songs from my phone and that fixed the sync).  to do this, check the "manually manage music and videos" box at the bottom of "summary" while your phone is connected to itunes.  Then, go to the left hand pane in itunes and find your iphone device, click the drop-down arrow that shows all the categories for media on your iphone.  Go to the music category in your iphone on itunes and delete all the music that shows up.  Try to perform a sync - it likely will work.  After this, you can uncheck the manually manage music box and re-sync your phone as normal
let me know if either works

  • Itunes sync stopped working a while back

Itunes Sync with my iphone stopped working properly ever since I upgraded to my IPHONE5... way back.  At the time I had to do the steps below in order to get all my music to sync over.
Backup and then Restore to factory settings
restore my phone from the backup
This process takes forever in my case because I have many apps and about 2000 songs
There had to be a less painful method.  Seems the problem is rooted in the fact that Itunes thinks there are songs on the Iphone when they actually are not.
The next time I had to go through this I came up with the method below... a little more involved but at least it took about 2hours compared to 8hours due to the time taken to reload my apps.
Uncheck the sync music in the Itunes summary. (also uncheck the sync books, and sync photos - upload your photos to the cloud first)
Wait for the audio files stored in the summary bar to go down to zero.  If it doesn't quite make it and if you still have songs on the phone delete manually.
Start Itunes match on my phone (in case the number of songs to manually delete is overwhelming)
    reboot my phone
Stop Itunes match on the phone
Reboot my phone (all this in an effort to make sure ITUNES realizes there are no songs left on my phone)
If there are any songs, books or movies on my phone the delete manually shouldn't be too many at this point.. in my case less than 100 songs.
Delete audio books, movies, and photos
    Reboot my mac/pc
Reboot my phone (one more time to make sure)
At this point your phone should be clean
Itunes should agree and indicate in the summary bar that no songs, books, music videos, and photos are on the phone.
Uncheck automatically sync in the summary
    Uncheck sync over wifi
Be sure itunes match on the phone is off
    reboot the phone
    reboot the mac/pc
    start Itunes
plug your phone into the mac/pc
select sync with books (if any)
If that goes well, after your books are synced then...
Select sync music and music videos in the summary tab
    this should go well....
sync your photos... I personally decided to leave them in the cloud
never sync your phone with your itunes again... lol.. otherwise you have to go through this whole process again.
now with my IPHONE 6plus... my itunes library just on it's own started gettiing messed up even though I just plugged the phone into my mac without syncing.
Soo.... reluctantly I will have to go through this process again.
By the way,... if it doesn't work... you're looking at the first method I described which involved the restore of the phone.
In either case... never auto or wifi sync your phone again with Itunes...Unless they someday decide to address this issue.

I don't know why it would not be there, so thescreenshot I inserted will probably not be of much use. However, this is what it looks like on my computer (see inserted image) .
As far as the location of the folder and file, the following is precisely where it is located:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support
Just now, when looking for it on my computer, I initially made the mistake of not looking for or going to the "common files" folder. Do you have this folder and did you look in it if so?
This probably will be of no help to you, but I hope that it will.

  • Itune sync with outlook calendar

everytime itune sync with outlook calendar,
a calendar folder under Outlook calendar is created.
iphone only sync with the newly created blank folder
    therefore, nothing.

    Answer Jbieber16:
Normally, when I sync my HTC (Pocket PC) with my notebook, I just plug USB cord to HTC (micro USB head) and notebook (regular USB head).  Microsoft Mobile Device Center will automatically start and then sync data between HTC and notebook (sync Microsoft Outlook data, musics, photo, and Microsoft Office files in designated folder).
When sync completed, Microsoft Outlook's contacts, calendar, notes, emails as well as musics, photo, and Microsoft Office files in HTC and Notebook will be identical and updated.
Without USB cord, it can be synced via Bluetooth (cordless).
Note: I posted this question because some of my friends using iPhone told me that "data of Microsoft Outlook will partially sync to iPhone via iTune, not all data".  So I check before sync Microsoft Outlook data with my new iPad2.

Connect the iOS device to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased. Place the iOS device in DFU mode. if necessary to allow the restore.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:

We have 2 ipods and 1 ipad with different apps all synced to one computer.  How do I prevent these apps from automatically being synced to all three devices each time I do a backup/sync?

Uncheck the option to automatically sync new apps to the device.
Other than that, syncing is by device.
Connect one device, tell iTunes what to sync, then sync.
    Connect second device, repeat.
    Connect third device, repeat.

  • ICloud verses iTunes sync

If I use iCloud to backup my devices do I still need to use iTunes sync (wireless or wired)?

You can use both but one at a Time. you can back-up to iCloud first then go back to Summary Page and check back-up to iTunes and click Sync again. By doing this you are making 2 copies of your back-up but you loose the "automatic process" by manually switching between back-up methods.
The benefit of using the iCloud back-up is you can restore any iOS device from everywhere where there is a Wi-Fi connection. You don't have to be on the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.

  • Help with iTunes Sync

Hi my iTunes account won't update/sync to be the same between my 2007 iMac (Leopard) to my MacBook Pro 2012 (Lion) - have tried 'home sharing' but it just won't update anything new since my first download.  I can't find a 'refresh' option.  How to I get my new podcasts/music to update automatically to the MacBook Pro after they have been updated on my iMac?  I can't update my iMac any further as it has only got 4GB so I can't get iCloud it and don't want to have duplicate everything in Itunes on the one account.
I want to set up my new iPhone to link on my MacBook Pro but it just won't pull across the iTunes info updated on iMac.
    Steph

    I've this same problems too.
    Version & Device info:
iPhoto v9.5.1 (with 14,000+ photos and 100 short iPhone/iPad video)
    iTunes v11.1.3
    Macbook Air 2012
    OSX 10.9.1
    Problem:
Unable to sync photo to iPhone 5S via iTunes (sync photo from iPhoto).
The sync at iTunes completed but there're nothing at my iPhone 5S.
    Tried:
Just got my iPhone 5S last week, trying to sync my iPhoto library to it using iTunes. But it keep crashing.
So I decided to start from the beginning again... I exported all iPhoto photos and video to folders.
Create new iPhoto library and import all photos and videos (with a folder at one time, approx 100-200 photos max in single folder).
Then sync to iPhone via iTunes (after each folder imported to iPhoto)
Everything went well at first (after synced 12,000+ photos), I can see the 'Events' tab in my iPhone 5S photo library and browse the photos.
Today, when I continue syncing the rest via iTunes, after it has completed the sync, all Photos that I'd synced previously is now gone. There're no 'Events' in my iPhone 5S photo library now.
Restarted iPhone 5S and also MBA, retried several times to sync and check, no luck! Even though the iTunes sync completes without any alert message, nothing is syncing to my iPhone 5S.
In my iPhone 5S, now there're only those new photos and video that I captured last few days. Nothing else.
Previously using iPhone 5 (with the same iPhoto library and everything was so smooth without any problem). Is this iPhone 5S problem or latest iTunes / iPhoto problem(s)?
Anyone else has the same issue and able to solve it? Thanks.

  • ITunes Syncing - Playlists/Directories, and Auto-syncing

I have a very large music collection, and have spent many hours organizing into playlists.  My current structure looks something like (Windows based):
    C:\My Music\Playlists\
    C:\My Music\Albums\
    C:\My Music\Mixes\
    C:\My Music\Singles\
Within the playlists directory, I have multiple subfolders that I have named according to playlists, like
    C:\My Music\Playlists\Playlist-A
    C:\My Music\Playlists\Playlist-B
    C:\My Music\Playlists\Playlist-C
Some of these playlists are for me, some for my wife, some for my children, and some for just listening to around the house.
Is there a way to have iTunes sync only specific Windows directories to a specific device? I.E. Can I have only Playlist-A and Playlist-B sync to my iPhone, Playlist-C and Playlist-D to my wife's iPhone, etc?  Would the iTunes function of 'Playlist Folders' be the solution to this where I can pick and choose which playlist can go to which specific device?
Is there a way to have iTunes automatically sync music in a specific Windows directory to the respective iTunes playlist each time a music file is added or deleted from the corresponding Windows directory? Does iTunes have this functionality native, or does this need to be accomplished via a script?
I don't want top try and sync my entire playlist directory to each device (due to storage limitations, and some musical tastes), but rather pick and choose, but I also don't want to have to reorganize my playlist collection to something like:
    C:\My Music\Playlists\My Playlists\Playlist-A
    C:\My Music\Playlists\My Playlists\Playlist-B
    C:\My Music\Playlists\Wife's Playlists\Playlist-C
    C:\My Music\Playlists\Wife's Playlists\Playlist-D
    C:\My Music\Playlists\Kid's Playlists\Playlist-E
    C:\My Music\Playlists\Kid's Playlists\Playlist-F
    C:\My Music\Playlists\Shared Playlists\Playlist-G
, because sometimes, we may both want to have access to the same playlists.  I'd rather just maintain the original, current directory structure.

  • My iPhone doesn't sync to iTunes, iTunes syncs back to my phone

I tried to sync my iPhone 3G but instead of syncing all my new songs and folders to iTunes, iTunes synced back to my phone. Lost over 200 songs and all my folders. Use my phone in my fitness classes, all of my folders were set up with my songs for certain classes, at least 6 months of work got lost. Also, I have over 40 apps, non of them shows up in my iTunes store. Very frustrating
Please help, iTunes and iPhone giving me an ulcer and sleepless nights! Can I get my lost folders/songs/apps back? And how can I do that? How can I avoid this happening again?

The iPhone, like all iOS devices, is not and has never been a backup device.
If content is missing from the computer, copy it from the old computer or the backup of the old computer.
Not syncing regularly is simply asking for problems.
Devices are easily lost, stolen, or simply fail.  In your case, had your device simply failed or been lost you would be out of everything.
Unfortunately, if they are not on the device or in iTunes on the computer they are gone.
The only reason syncing would cause them to "disappear" is because this is not the computer the device is synced with.
I would strongly encourage you to read the User's Guide to better understand how the device is designed to be used.

  • ITunes syncing my podcasts to a different iPod

We have an iMac running Mac OS X (Tiger). I have a 5G 30GB iPod and my son has a 4GB Nano. Each of us has our own account (mine is the admin. account) and our own separate music libraries in iTunes.
Once when I was working under my account, I wanted to charge his Nano's battery. When I plugged it into our Mac, I got the message stating that his iPod was synced to another account. My options were to either erase his Nano and sync it to my library or to cancel. Naturally, I selected "CANCEL". But interestingly enough, the podcasts I subscribed to started to sync to my son's Nano. Once the sync was complete, I checked my son's Nano and, sure enough, there they were.
So, not wanting my 8-year old to hear the exploits and musings of those wacky madcaps at "beer.com", I logged off my account, logged on as my son, plugged in his Nano, synced up with iTunes, deleted the podcasts from iTunes, synced up again and finally set the parental lock to disable podcasts. All is well.
Now whenever I plug in his Nano to charge it when my account is active, the same message comes up as before. When I select "CANCEL", iTunes still shows the podcasts syncing to my son's Nano but (as near as I can tell) they aren't actually getting there. I still make a habit of checking just to make sure they don't get there.
My questions are: Have I got something set wrong somewhere to cause iTunes to try to sync podcasts to my son's Nano, or is this just the way iTunes works? Why does iTunes show podcasts syncing to the Nano when I have both disabled podcasts on the Nano AND selected not to sync it to my iTunes library? Is the parental control to disable podcasts only a part of the iTunes software and not the Nano itself? In other words, can my iTunes library not tell that my son's Nano is not supposed to get podcasts, or is syncing podcasts simply based on the iTunes settings for the active account irrespective of whose iPod is plugged in at the time?
Right now it is not a big issue as all podcasts are currently disabled on his account. If he ever wanted to subscribe to some more age-appropriate podcasts, however, then I assume I'll be able to set something somewhere to keep the more adult-themed material from getting on to his Nano irrespective of whose account is active when I plug in his Nano to charge it. The other options, of course, are to only plug in his Nano to the Mac when his account is active or to charge it from a plug-in.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me on this issue.
      Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Sorry I forgot to ask How. Do I export the library? When I choose this my only choice is a .txt file. Or do I backup the whole library.
As much info. as possible would be appreciated
    Thanks

  • No iTunes sync over VPN

I would like to do an iTunes sync over VPN but this doesn't work.
    Has anyone ever done this?
I set up VPN service on my 10.6 server and VPN works fine, I can VPN on from an outside computer to my network w/ no issue and see my network.
When I VPN to my network on my iPad or iPhone, I get connected and the device gets an ip but I can't initiate a iTunes sync.
Was this just not meant to be? It should.

I'm working on trying to figure this out too.  I have a working VPN setup.  To sync itunes, I am thinking that the itunes on the remote computer must have an itunes library that points to the main itunes library on the host computer.  I think I have changed my itunes library on my remote computer to the library on the host via Preferences and the Advanced tab.  There is a place there to change the location of your itunes library.  When I click change, I can navigate to the itunes media location on the host.
I am syncing now, and will be able to confirm the results tomorrow when I have access to the host.  Hopefully the sync won't have messed something up.  But, I am thinking this is working...

  • Anyone else having problem with RAID and iTunes syncing photos in Vista?

    Hello,
For whatever reason iTunes can not load some of the photos from C drive. It can do it from D drive, though VERY slow. Both C and D are NTFS system, but C is a RAID 0 drive (implemented by hardware on motherboard, Intel 82801G controller). I just wander if this is something related to iTunes not working correctly with RAID drivers, or is it something else? I should say that ALL other programs and games working fine on this drive.
    Thanks for the replies.

The problem is with Windows Vista using the NTFS file system, check out this post for the official solution. This has worked perfectly for me everytime I've tried it:
