Automatic logout after system freeze?

Lately I have been having trouble with my MBP 4,1 running 10.6.8.  The entire computer will freeze for several minutes, and then the system will automatically close all open programs, log out all users, and return to the login screen.  It's almost like the computer restarts itself without the actual restart.  (I hope that made sense.)
Does anyone know what's going on or how to fix it?  If it means anything, I'm running Sophos AV and multiple scans haven't turned up anything.
Thanks!

If someone asked how to shut off a car engine whenever the computer detected someone was speeding, would you just assume they thought through every possible scenario?  Would you want to have that car when you're rushing a loved-one to
a hospital?  When you're passing a truck?
Ever worked at a place where the IT department implemented utterly stupid policies that caused you problems in getting your work done?  Gee, IT people couldn't
possibly make mistakes like that, could they?  Grow up.

Talk about growing up, seems to me you're using some old playground tactics yourself (of the 3 fo us???.. that's a bit immature).   And I could not agree more with Bint's remarks as it never fails when trying to get help in forums.  It's as
if the question is dodged to ponder on some ridiculous moral epiphany tangent.  Grant it you provided possible solutions but had to interject your beliefs at the same time.  Of course that is your right and no one has to read them, but at the sametime
you should be willing to accept a little constructive criticism yourself. I don't know why people that posted in a forum 100's, if not 1000's of times feel they are the pontificators of all that is right when it comes to these kind of remarks.
Noel, just offer some solutions minus the judgement calls.  I think rewording your concerns (judgements)  like "you may want to make sure..."   would be more acceptable than your personal experiences with IT.    And for
the record, in a business or institution, those computers do not belong to the individual using them at that time and should adhere to policies set forth to them.  Otherwise suffer the consequences.

i am trying to setup an automated logout after an idle period for regular domain users. this is a lab environment running windows 7 enterprise x64.
we used winexit.scr before, but it looks like it is incompatible with windows 7. i have tried making a scheduled task for this purpose but it never executes. i found a program that will do the logoff and i tried to make a scheduled task to execute the program but it never triggers.
    has anyone done this successfully?

  • Automatic logout after lock screen for long time?

When I leave my mac screen locked for long time, sometimes I see the following message after unlocking screen:
"Logout has timed out because the application [x] failed to quit...."
Where [x] is some application trying to quit, and is waiting for user confirmation. This happens even when the computer is plugged in to AC. Has anyone else seen this problem? TIA

  • Automatic logout after daily time limit reached

Hey there, I'd like to be able to limit the amount of time my daughter uses the computer in a day. I know that if I tell her she can use it for 2 hours a day, we'll just get into arguments about when she's reached the limit. So, what I'd like is some advice on how I would go about setting up a timer that logs the cumulative amount of time she is logged on in a day and automatically logs her out once it reaches 2 hours in a day. I'd also, obviously, like it to deny furter logins once the limit is reached until the next day. I don't have any experience with scripts but I think it'll involve some kind of root level logout hook. Just a guess though. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Scott

  • Automatic Logout after inactivity

I am trying to figure out the best way to 'kick' students off our lab machines at the end of the day.
As it is right now, the machines are set to 'log out after 30 minutes of inactivity' and to shutdown at 10:00pm each night. What happens is someone leaves and unsaved document open causing the logout and shutdown to be cancelled.
I understand the inconvenience that could be caused by giving forcing logouts and shutdowns, but I still want to.
Can the inactivity log out be given more power? Can I have the log out ignore unsaved work?

Thank you for your response, but that guide doesn't have any information on logging out users other than the security preference pane.
I have, however, been able to find a script which accomplishes the force logout of a user...
    kill -9 `ps -Axjc | grep loginwindow | grep student | cut -c 13-16`
Currently this script is scheduled to run to make sure the machines are able to shutdown each night.
While this gets me one step closer, I would like to run this script on inactivity instead. Can this be done..?

  • How to Automatically Logout Users

We recently created user accounts to enable parental controls for our teens. Very often, someone in the house will have used the mac, but forgets to logout from their account. Since there are different restrictions on different accounts, I would like to find a way to automatically log a user out after inactivity (especially if it is the admin user that has forgotten to log out, as we have NO parental controls!!). I have gone to system prefs and under security have set the automatic logout after 10 minutes of inactivity, but it did not log the user out. It seemed to put the computer to sleep, but NOT log the user out. Help?!?

Hmm ... I found this in the Help files:
+IMPORTANT: You should save any documents you’ve changed and close any applications that may present a dialog before closing. If any dialogs for unsaved documents or open applications appear during the log out, your computer will not finish logging you out.+
Is it possible that you hadn't saved all of your work or that one of your apps had a dialog box showing? Alternatively, Fast User Switching may work better for you. Here's what the Help says about that:
+When a user logs out of the computer, any open documents and applications close. If you want to allow multiple accounts to be running at the same time, you should allow “fast user switching.”+
+When fast user switching is turned on, the name of the current user is displayed in the upper-right corner of the menu bar. You can click the name to select another user to switch to.+
Fast User Switching would eliminate the need to log out when leaving the computer; simply go up to where it gives the name of the account on the top right corner of the screen and select Login Window. All users remain logged in, even when another user is working in a different account, until someone either logs out or the computer is restarted. To enable this, go to System Preferences > Accounts. Then click on Login Options at the bottom of the list of accounts. On the right, check the box that says Enable Fast User Switching and select the view you'd like to see in the menu bar.
    I hope this helps!

  • Automatic logout of Forte clients

We would like to be able to detect if a user has not done anything for a
period of time - so that we can do automatic logouts after x minutes of
inactivity. Detecting inactivity sounds like the sort of job an agent
would do. Has anyone tried anything like this, or got any suggestions as
to how else we might do it - on a Forte client?
    Thanks,
    Graham Jenkins

    Hi,
I would use BAT for that:
    1. Create the services and the service profile, enable one user for IM&Presence using the service profile
    2. Export all users using BAT in CUCM (Bulk Administration->users->Export Users, run immediately, then change to Bulk Administration->Job Scheduler, when your job is completed you can download the export file using Bulk Administration->Upload/Download Files)
    3. Change the file extension from txt to csv and edit the file with your favorite CSV editor, so you enable all users for IM&Presence and add the service profile
    4. Upload the file again with the last step in 2.
    5. Use Bulk Administration->Users->update Users->custom file to update the user information.
    Best regards,
    Thomas.

  • Why does my entire system freeze shortly after I open iTunes?

    Hi!
So I have OS X Lion installed on my new iMac 21.5" desktop. I don't know if I'm having an OS problem or an App problem here. Everything seems to run fine (a little sluggish at times though) UNTIL I use iTunes. Within a couple minutes of having iTunes open, the entire system freezes up. I can't do anything except for move the cursor around. If I wait around, every 45 seconds or so, it unfreezes itself only for a brief second or two and then freezes again. After waiting around for several minutes of it doing this, I can eventually manuever around to force quit iTunes.. OR I can simply turn the power off from the back of the iMac and restart... Either way, I haven't even been able to submit crashes to Apple to alert them of a problem. Once iTunes has been force quit, everything runs fine again. I have had this happen at least 15 - 20 times already and am very frustrated! Does anyone have a good idea what's going on here? Any suggestions of what I should do? I haven't contacted Apple about this problem yet.
Also, I've experienced this iTunes problem with both a small library (fewer than 100 songs), and with a very large library (1000s of songs). I usually won't have more than 4 apps opened at one time anyway as to not over burden my system.. So I don't believe I'm having a memory issue here. I've had this problem happen when my iPod was syncing, and when it was not even connected or turned on. I've tried several things including 1) reinstalling Lion, 2) resetting my iPod, 3) having all other items disconnected from my iMac, 4) I verified permissions and performed a disk repair in Disk Utility 5) turned Time Machine off & on... I haven't noticed problems with other applications.. other than once my DVD player froze up for a few seconds (along with the rest of my system) while on the dvd main menu. I really don't use many applications often and Lion is still new to me. So I'm not aware of having problems with other applications yet. Thanks.

  • [SOLVED] System freeze after upgrade linux-3.12.9-2 to linux-3.13.4-1

After upgrading from kernel 3.12.9 to 3.13.4 (booth x86_64 architecture) i detected system freeze after round about 0.5s of the login screen about 80% of the time.
So i first thought it coulbe be the the ati driver and uninstalled that via livecd/chroot.
But the same thing happens in comand line only mode.
Afterwards i setup at ssh server to get into the maschine if it is still running, but is was also not responding to that.
Downgrading to 3.12.9 solved the issue. In journalctl i could not find any usefull information.

  • Spaces causing system freeze and logout

Recently (probably within the last 2-3 weeks) I've been having some issues with switching between spaces. It doesn't happen every time, but occasionally when I switch to another space my entire computer will freeze in the middle of the animation. After a few seconds, my screen will go blue and I'll get logged out.
    Anybody else ever encounter this?

I have a similar problem with Spaces under OS X 10.6.4 on my MacBookPro5,3.
When I use Spaces from the keyboard to switch contexts to another window, the screen switching icon "sticks" to the display, and the keyboard only responds to the Spaces switching keystroke and some of the other "special" keys. However, the mouse continues to work, and I'm sometimes able to attempt a restart from the apple menu. But, the system still hangs about 50% of the time, forcing me to do a hard reset by holding down the power button.
I have had the blue screen experience once or twice, but I don't think it's related.
Other users where I work have reported nearly similar experiences with Spaces causing a system freeze.
I have, about 50% of the time, been able to use the mouse to disable other currently running utilities, one at a time, until the screen has become responsive. These utilities include:
    Quicksilver
    ClipMenu
    TypeIt4Me
    ShoveBox
It could be one of these is the culprit (my money's on ClipMenu and Quicksilver at the moment.)
I've also logged in via SSH from another machine and started whacking processes with some limited success. It seems there's some collision there with other running utilities, but I'm not sure what.
At this point, my only option is to disable Spaces and muddle through with a single desktop. Spaces crashes my system so consistently that it's not usable.
Sorry I don't have any other ideas to offer at this point.

  • Suddenly my kernel panics or system freezes after loging in

My new MBP worked fine for about a month. Then, 2 days earlier it longer shutdown times than normally. But everything was still working. Suddenly I couldn't view flashvideos in firefox although I heard the audio. Then I got beachballs when trying to look into my emails (with "Mail") and couldn't start *.mov-files with Quicktime. Then I also got beachballs when I selected files in the Finder. After a while these beachballs disappeared (but they kept coming back). At this I time I already had some kernel panics.
After repairing permissions with the harddsik utility-program I got kernel panics one after the other and now I can only startup in Safe-mode, since everytime I log myself in the system freezes or a kernel panic starts the MBP new.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

I kicked out all the kexts, and I still can boot into safe mode, but still I get KPs after loging in into normal boot up.
It looks like it always stops at this AppleHWSensor kext- does anybody know anything about it?

  • [Solved] System freezes after 10 minutes if no monitor attached

I've got a server machine that has been running Arch for a month now. It has had a problem of constant freezing all the time. At first it seemed completely random but today I noticed the system freezes up exactly after 10.00 minutes of uptime, if there is no monitor plugged into the system. If I unplug the display after ten minutes, the system will run fine as long as I want to (days, weeks) without it. Ten minutes is also the time after which the monitor will go into stand-by mode. Seems like some kind of a power-saving bug? No entries in any log file @ /var/log...
The system runs only basic home network functionalities; it serves as an NFS server, a print server (CUPS) and runs Lighttpd as a web server. It doesn't do Xorg nor has any fancy kernel modules loaded either. The system is up-to-date (stable repos). No custom-built software.
Somewhat sad since I previously ran NetBSD on the server, but it didn't support my printer-scanner (only printer OR scanner, one at a time), then switched to FreeBSD which failed with my new WLAN card, so then turned to Arch that I've ran on desktop for years now (also like the BSD-ness), and then this...

Case closed, the source of trouble was once again kernel mode-setting (I think)... I blacklisted the drm_kms_helper module and some other stuff and that disabled the KMS functionality, and the server now doesn't freeze at any point.

  • System freeze after prolonged Flash usage

    Hello,
I stumbled across this thread as i am having exactly the same problems as Fossil, although he has been quiet so i guess disabling hardware acceleration worked for him. However this is not working for me, I have sent two graphics cards back on the strength of this issue and im still getting it on my third card! Firstly my system:
    Intel Core I7-3930K 3.20GHz Socket 2011 12MB Cache
    32GB RAM Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 2000MHz XMS3 Memory Kit CL9 1.65V
    Asus P9X79 PRO S2011 Intel X79 DDR3 ATX Motherboard
    Corsair 120GB SSD
    Samsung Synch Master MD230x3 Monitors
    Windows 7 Pro (64bit)
Now because im using eyefinity monitors i bought this card:
    PowerColor HD 6870 2GB GDDR5
First one failed instantly when i played any sort of flash video, on advice from retailer i sent it back (they said it was a known issue with some AMD 6870 cards, Second one came back and was slightly better which was odd but the same problem, i formatted the drive and started from scratch only installing the latest drivers from Powercolor rather than using the supplied disk and then upgrading.
After opening multiple websites using flash such as you tube, bbc news videos etc system just freezes forcing a reboot. I used core temp plus the video card supplied performance monitor, i saw no increase in system temps, fan speeds or power being supplied. Supplier would only refund my money as the card went out of stock which is a pain because this is one of the few that support 6 monitors via mini dp port at a reasonable price So I ordered the following card:
    PowerColor HD 7870 PCS+ 2GB GDDR5
Only supports 4 monitors but as my board is pci 3.0 i thought i would try a card that supports it to see if this solves the problem.
Well it didn’t! After about an hour of usage with flash websites i get a system freeze. If i uninstall flash, i dont get any problems at all.
Adobe, i need some help here guys because this is not normal and if there is a problem with the latest hardware architectures then I need a fix.
    Regards

Yeah i was not sure about creating a new thread as the original problem had not been solved but thanks for the update Fossil, glad you got it working on an older version however i dont think thats a satisfactory solution from Adobe, we cant all stay on older versions of flash as some websites will not funtion without the latest player.
    Chris,
    Thanks for your prompt response
I am following your advice and yes i have done just about everything apart from the bug report thing and this interesting step:
In addition to updating your video drivers and disabling Flash Player hardware acceleration, please try the following steps:
    Windows:
    Close all browsers
    Open an explorer window
Navigate to the following folders and delete the contents
    %appdata%\adobe\Flash Player\
    %appdata%\macromedia\
Finally, restart your browser and try again
I have no idea why that step should have any impact on this issue, however I have been running flash websites with HA turned off (this is one of the first things i tried on the previous graphics cards and i still experience the failure) for about an hour now (10 open at the same time + 3 or 4 flash youtube videos playing) and all looks good so far.
Note, i had performed some archiving last night which caused high disk i/o + cpu usage over a period of about 14 hours and i did not experience a system crash.
I will update you later today or as soon as i experience the failure.
    Regards
    Regan
