Automatic Opening of Apps at Login

Since upgrading to Mavericks I find that applications that are designated to automatically start up on login only do so the once. That's to say that before shutting the laptop down Skype (for example, though it applies to other apps too) has the 'open at login' option next to the dock icon ticked and is also listed in the 'Login Items' window under the Users & Groups system preferences. However upon starting the laptop back up again Skype will indeed start up automatically, however the ticked option/listing for automatic start up etc have now disappeared and so any subsequent starting up of the laptop fails to launch the apps automatically. It is really irritating. Any Ideas? Please!

Thanks for the suggestion. Was hopeful that would work. I deleted the com.apple.loginitems.plist file. It did indeed just list the dropbox app as the only app to open on startup (reading it in textedit).
I then added skype and a couple of other apps to my system prefs/user login items list.
Restarted the laptop and all designated apps opened automatically (so the login items list must have been recorded correctly somewhere initially).
However i went back in to the new com.apple.loginitems.plist file and it doesn't have all the new apps listed in it again. Yet again it justs lists solely Dropbox and this is then also confirmed by opening up system prefs/user/login items window which has again lost all the apps I'd added it to it previous to restarting.
Something is getting lost somewhere or not being wrtten correctly. And it's not the end of the world. But it really is very irritating!

Very clever. But unfortunately that doesn't seem to work in Tiger.
Then again, I stil presume that when you do that, a ile is still downloaded and appears somewhere on your hard drive. If you "save as" the file opened by preview, you probably still need to go back to the place where the file was saved and delete it.
Then again again, if Preview is peeking into a Word or Excel attachment, it may not actually be "downloading it" first?? Strange. If it was a jpg file attachment, on the other hand, it seems more likely that some sort of file would be downloaded to the hard drive as a result of that drag and drop of the paper clip.
I did find that drag and drop capability interesting, though. Even in Tiger.
Oh well. I have to start looking at scripts.
When I downloaded that Automator application that was supposed to "close all open applications", I was surprised that it didn't work. Says it works with TIger. ???

Was I supposed to import it into Automator as an "action" and save it as an Automator application and then open Automator and click "run" for that action each time I wanted to use it? Seams a bit cumbersome.

If you click Software Update from your Apple menu that will automatically open the App Store.
That's where your updates are downloaded from using Lion or Mountain Lion.
If you are trying to update your iPhone, tap Settings > General > Software Update

Thanks for the response gakker, but I've double-checked the camera / iPhoto / Image Capture scenario, and I'm 100% positive it's got nothing to do with that.
Plugging in my iPhone has no effect on anything related to this.
The other thing I should have mentioned is that when iTunes on my Mac is NOT running, then nothing happens on my iPhone screen when I plug it in to my Mac. I only get the "Sync in progress" message when iTunes IS running.
It's interesting though that you say you also get this "Sync in progress" message, albeit only for a second or two though.
Can I just double-check something with you however... When you say:

do you mean the iTunes on your Mac? Because the problem I have is that the iPod-playback on my iPhone is interrupted.
So can you clarify that for me, please? If you have music playing on your iPhone, and you then plug your iPhone into your Mac when iTunes is running on your Mac, does the music playback on the iPhone get interrupted?

How can I disable Firefox from automatically opening on system startup on my Mac - unchecking the "open at login" does not work?

We have Firefox 10.o on our Macbook Pro OS X 10.5.8. I prefer using Firefox as my browser but my husband prefers Safari for now because of a long history of bookmarks and saved information he doesn't have time to re-do. He is tired of Firefox automatically opening when we start up the laptop, and even when we uncheck the "open at login" it still opens at login every time. He is about to uninstall it because of this. How can we disable? It does NOT show up in our account on the Mac OS as an application that starts at login, so we can't disable it there.

1. click start (or the windows flag button at the bottom left) 2. in the "search programs and files" or the RUN dialog box, enter "msconfig.exe" or "msconfig". 3. That should open the system configuration program. 4. click the "Startup" tab at the top of the opened program. 5. Under the "startup item" column, look for Mozilla firefox. 6. uncheck that one. 7. Click OK or apply. 8. click "exit without restart". 9. you're good to go.

No - and you can't open pdf files in the Pages app on the iPad anyway as far as I know. You can export a Pages file as a pdf but you can't open them in Pages.

Sounds like a software issue. Back-up the iPod to a computer and then restore the software via iTunes and set it up as a new device. If it is working fine then restore your backup to the device. If it is still playing up before you put your information back on then it is most likely a faulty device, and would need a service.

Have you tried closing the app completely ? From the home screen (i.e. not with the non-working app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Just to recap, this is a collection of ports I have collected over time for people who needed this information when setting up the HP ePrint app so that they could view their email from within the app. I am certain other applications also need this information. Although lengthy, I could not find a more comprehensive place to retrieve this information. Stop Firefox automatically opening homepage when opening links in external apps.

When Firefox is not running, and intermittently when running and there are no windows open, clicking a link in another program (such as Tweetie or Apple's Mail.app) causes Firefox to open a second window with my homepage in it.
I cannot find a way to disable this in settings, and it happens on 3.6 and 4.0 Beta, both Windows and Mac (haven't tried Linux).
If this is a "feature" please let me know if there is a way of preventing it as it's very frustrating. If I want to open my homepage I will open the app manually by clicking it's icon, otherwise I want just my link to open and nothing else.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
