Automatic paragraph numbering in pages

Hello,
I'm using Pages 5.2.2.
I would like to create Numbered Headings and increment automatically.
So I've tried the following:
From the Format Pane, I've selected the Paragraph Style -> Heading.
Then from the Bullets & Lists, I've selected -> Numbered.
The result is something like this:
1. First Heading
Great so far.
Then I type some text and insert some images. Time for another Heading,
I repeat the above process, but alas, I get:
1. Second Heading
When I expect:
2. Second Heading.
Does this work in Pages 5.2, or is this broken? The lack of Basic features like this make Pages unusable for any kind of serious work.

Before I post a response, I may spend considerable time testing various approaches to a problem. I don't guess.
In Pages v5.2.2, there is no automated numbering solution for Paragraph headings, even if saved in a template. Each instance of a new heading, must be set as a numbered list item, and the incremental value must be manually chosen. Yes, you can achieve numbered headings, but it will not please you.
I feel uncomfortable using the term word processing and Pages v5.2.2 together. It has to be the worst software product that Apple has released in recent memory. There are other popular word processing products that you can use on the Mac — Word in Office for Mac — as an example.

Continuing Paragraph Numbering in a 2nd document

I want to create a series of documents, with automatic paragraph numbering in each one, but continuing on from one to the next. I can't see a way to get the numbering to start at a number other than one in a new document.
Am I missing something, or is this just not possible in AppleWorks?
I really don't want to do it as one long document, because it will just be too big and hard to manage.

Paragraph numbering automatically restarts at 1 for each document, or for each separate group of paragraphs to which the style is applied. So far as I know, there's no way to start the numbering at any other level.
One workaround (and it's a rather clunky one) would be to insert enough 'empty' paragraphs at the top of the second document to make the first 'real' paragraph's number correct. Paragraph numbers increment only when the new paragraph contains at least a single character, so each of the 'empty' paragraphs would have to contain one dummy character. Setting the Size to the minimum 4 points would make these paragraphs take up the least (visual) space, and ending the list of 'empty' paragraphs with a page break (shift-enter) would allow starting the 'real' part of the second document at the top of a new page.

How to turn off automatic numbering in Pages

I recently had a problem getting rid of automatic numbering within Pages.
I keyed in a numbered heading (eg, "1. H1") and then hit return, when it gave me another numbered heading ("2. H2") on the next line, which I didn't want.
The easiest way to get round this is to hit the return key on the automatically numbered line (eg, "2. H2"), which removes the "2" and puts you to the start of the line. This seems to tell Pages that you don't want automatic numbering, at least for the time being. Perhaps until you key another numbered heading...
To turn off automatic numbering on an individual line you can press the "i" button at the top and select "None". That will remove the number.

The View menu does what it says:
Menu > View > Hide Invisibles

Can I Auto format the first paragraph on every page of a 20 page document?

So I have a document that is basically just a numbered list of 200 entries.
There are 10 entries per page, making it a 20 page document.
Unfortunately, every so often I am given an additional entry to add, which invariaby is to the middle of the document, and not the end.
What I'd like to do is if I were to add a new #20 to the document, the old #20 (now #21), being pushed to the next page, would then automatically be formatted using my "StyleA" paragraph style.
I haven't been able to discover how to do this, which means, in the above example, I need to go to 18 pages and remove the "StyleA" paragraph formatting as in each case following the addition, it is now the second entry on the page. At the same time, I have to apply the "StyleA" paragraph formatting to each first entry of all subsequent pages. If I only had to do this once in a while, it wouldn't be an issue, but as this document is updated regularily, it is getting tedious.
Nested styles doesn't seem to be an option, since i'm using Numbering which requires a paragraph break to differentiate between each line number, and nested styles seem to apply to every paragraph, unless i'm doing something wrong there.
I hope this is enough to go on.

You are saying that the formatting is different for every 20th paragraph, reagardless of its content, and that it is aways going to be the first paragraph on a page?
As long as you never deviate from the 20 paragraph cycle this is actually fairly easy to do, you jsut need 20 paragraph styles, 19 of which are based on each other and differ only in the style name. You then set the "next style" attribute to rotate through the list of styles, so the next style for #20 is #1 and the sequence starts over. Now just select the entire block of text from the point where you edited to the end and right-click on the style name for the irst paragraph in the selection, then from the context menu choose Apply <stylename> And Next Style.

Restart paragraph numbering each spread

How do I restart paragraph numbering after each spread?
I'm working on a catalog where the items in a spread are marked with a letter, and the images of those items are marked with the same letter. This way the reader can see which image belongs with which listing. For example:

If paragraph numbering doesn't restart at all, the numbers get far too high, as we have thousands of listings in the catalog. If numbering restarts after every higher-level section, we could have two paragraphs on the same spread with the same number, as sections can change within a spread.

Just to clarify, would you sometimes have A and B on one page, and A and B on the next consecutive page, but during the layout process, item A from the second page may be moved back, and need to become C on the first page, or possibly B from the first page is deleted and A from the following page moves back to become B? Is that what you're up against, and you want it to be automatic? I'm not sure I have a solution just now, but I want to be sure I understand you.

How do you disable the automatic list detection in Pages 5?

How can you disable or deselect the automatic list detection in Pages 5? I want to stop the auto numbering.

Menu > Pages > Preferences > General > Editing: uncheck Automatically detect lists

[JS,CS3,CS4] Converting Paragraph numbering to text

I'm trying to add line numbers by applying paragraph numbering to selected text (which I call "myText"), then converting numbers to text (then later I'll use GREP to remove the period and shift them to the right).
I'm new to scripting, and wonder why the following doesn't work:
myText.bulletsAndNumberingListType=1280601709;
myText.convertBulletsAndNumberingToText();
The first line seems to add the numbering as I'd like, but the second line just makes them disappear again!

Copy and paste Values from Numbers to Pages

When I do simple copy and paste content from Numbers to Pages, I get a formula error message. All I want to copy and paste the values only, not the formulas, but on pages I cannot find a way to paste values only. When it tries to paste formula, it errors because some of the formulas references to other sheets on Numbers. What is the easy way to get values from Numbers tables to pages without passing formulas.
Or better yet! Is there a way to link tables to pages like charts with refresh capabilities so I don't have to copy and paste values to pages document every time Numbers table values changes?

There is no Paste Special in OSX, anywhere. You can Paste Values from the Edit menu in Numbers when that would be necessary.
In such cases where you would use Paste Values in Numbers, you can use Paste and Match Style in Pages for the same result.
Sometimes it's so obvious to Pages what should be done that it will give you what you need automatically, but sometimes you need to use Paste and Match Style to get the values rather than an error triangle.

Automatic Section Numbering

Hello, just after some help with automatic section numbering in IDCS5.
What I have is a (currently) 50 page document split into about 15 sections. I would like to number the sections and pages so that they appear on each page 1.1, 1.2 1.3 etc
I've experimented with all the page numbering options but none seem to automatically update the 'section' number, I can only manually add a prefix.
The problem I have is this document will be a continually evolving thing and later on I may need to add a new section between say section 2 and 3. Is it possible to have all the following sections renumber accordingly, so 3.1 automatically becomes 4.1 and so on.

In the frame where you are putting the page number marker also add the Section Marker character. It's in the same list of markers under special characters as the page number markers.

Problems moving text from safari to numbers and pages

Hi,
I'm trying to copy some data from a website, for example, an address with multiple lines of text, and paste it into a cell in numbers, and from there into a cell in a table in pages.
The trouble is that the original text is sometimes formatted on the web site with returns after each line, and when I try to paste that into numbers or pages, each line goes into a different cell, which is a pain in the ***, and I have to retype the whole thing.
Is there some way that I can have this do what I want it to do, that is, paste the entire address into a single cell?

We must double click in the cell before pasting if we want that several 'paragraphs remain in a single cell.
I clicked once in cell B2, but I clicked twice in cell C2

Script to Change Paragraph Numbering

Hi.
I am really new to scripting (please don't hurt yourself laughing at my code below ) and need some help!
The issue: The documents I author go through a translation process which takes the InDesign XML data and exports my text into a web browser tool so it can be translated. After it has been translated, the text is placed back into my document with the formatting and paragraph styles that it had when I exported it. That created a problem with Figure and Table captions as those paragraph styles have "Figure" and "Table" hardcoded into the paragraph style.
Possible Solution: On page one of each document that is generated, I list the language of that document (for example "Russian"). I think I need to write a script that goes looks at the first page and if it has a language listed (in this case "Russian") then it replaces the paragraph numbering text with a defined text ("Рисуноk" is "Figure" in Russian).

Hmm, I think what you're after is "numbering expression" rather than "start at."
"Start at" is the actual number it's going to assign, to either continue from the previous number or if you're hard-coding to always start at 1, for example.
The expression is the form it'll take, with wording and spacing you're using as your format for these labels. In AppleScript, it'd be:
set numbering expression of paragraph style "Figure Title" to "Рисунок ^#. "
I don't know Javascript, but there must be something similar in the JS scripting guide.

I Bought Numbers and Pages but the Trial Versions Open Instead!

Hello everyone, first time here.
       Sorry if this has been covered before, I couldn't find anything relating to my issue.
     I used the trial version of Numbers and Pages after first purchasing my Macbook last year but later purchased both from the App Store. If I access a document through Finder it unknowingly opens up the trial version and after editing it the documents won't allow me to save them unless I purchase the programs, which of course I already have. Whenever I open the application first it seems to work fine.
     How do I delete the demo version or at least get the purchased version to open automatically? Thank you!

It used to be that to update the trial to the licensed version with the box, you just inserted the DVD & ran the installer to convert the trial to licensed. This has changed with Snow Leopard. You now need to delete the trial & then reinstall from the boxed DVD. The files to delete are the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications; the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support & the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences for each user.
Yvan Koenig has written an AppleScript that removes the files. You can find it on his iDisk in For_iWork > iWork '09 > uninstall iWork '09.zip.
Then reinstall from the DVD or the Mac App Store.

Cannot save to local drive in Numbers or Pages

When attempting to name and save a document in Numbers or Pages, iCloud appears by default as the target folder. When I change it to my local drive and select the local target folder, the file name automatically changes to the target folder name and I can't save anything.
Has anyone had this problem? Thanks for any help on this - sure looks like a bug to me.
BTW, I'm running Mountain Lion/10.8.1 and up-to-date versions of Numbers and Pages...

CMD-S now defaults to my local drive, but folder names are greyed out. If I click on one, then it tries to name the file with the folder name! Any ideas about that?

Selective combining between files with odd and even numbers of pages

Hi all! First of all, i hope this is the right forum for my question. It has been asked before, but not fully answered. My problem is combining multiple pdfs with adding a blank page only to the ones that contain odd numbers of pages, the ones with even numbers should be left alone. I need a fast and automatic way of doing this so i can save huge amounts of time when faced with massive numbers of files. If this simply cannot be done, is there a way of sorting all the files so that, from the whole group, only the ones with odd numbers of pages go to a specified folder? Like this isnt enough i have the same problem when converting, lest say, multiple word files into 1 pdf file using pdf factory.

It would require knowledge of some JavaScript to determine if a particular page was landscape and if so, to rotate it. You could try asking in the JavaScript forum.

Why does pages enter a paragraph after a page break? This comes into play when I am using bullets and numbers.

Because Page Breaks and Section Breaks are returns. Use soft returns [Line breaks] if that is what you want.
