Automatic place graphic below a paragraph style

Is it possible in Indesign CS4 to place automatic a graphic below or above a paragraph style when you apply the paragraph style to a paragraph?
In Framemaker it is possible, because they use "Reference pages" and in the the window to design a paragraph style, you can select which item on the reference page must automatic added below or above that style.
I'm new for Indesign and I would like to know how to solve this problem. Any suggestions?

That would be the most possible acceptable solution Peter!
In Framemaker is this also the solution, but I thought there would be a better solution.
In Frame, I created also a tabel with 2 columns and 1 row, in Indesign I will create a table with 2 columns and 2 rows.
I hope it is possible to create a table-style where the illustration is already inserted.
In ID, if you prefer, you can create a one-row two-column table, then split the left cell horizontally (Table > Split Cell Horizontally), paste the graphic in the bottom part of the split cell, and the text in the upper, then adjust sizes.
If you want the developers to consider adding the ability to attach a container above/below a paragraph style to ID, post a formal request at:
https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
DTP Tools' cross-reference plug-in for ID has a feature that you may want to investigate; the inserted cross-reference can define a cross-reference format that displays the reference source text according to the language property at the insertion point.
EDIT: Contact for this plug-in is at www.dtptools.com.
For example, if your cross-reference source text is "Note:", you can define the cross-reference format to display it as "Nota:" if the surrounding language at the insertion point is Italian, "Aviso:" if it's Spanish, "Achtung:" if it's German, etc. (DISCLAIMER: I'm only guessing at the word for "Note" in these other languages.) It's something like conditional text behavior, but instead of choosing show/hide, you set the language attribute for all content in the document to make it work. It may be simpler, hence more practical, to change the show/hide condition setting, which you can do across a book of files with the Synchronize feature, than to change all text styles to a particular language. Unlike FM, ID doesn't have a Global Update Options feature to change a property, like language, in all, (or selected) paragraph styles in a document in one action. Based-on paragraph and character styles might introduce more complexity than is necessary, though the operation is only needed once per language version.
This may be TMI - probably conditional text is the simplest to implement, once it's set up.

  • Create automatic white gap/bar with paragraph style

    Hello,
    Thanks to your help and the Paragraph Ruler trick, I managed to get automatic title formatting (the grey background)
    Now, I would like to get automatically white gap as in line two but I can't figure out how to do it (tried with strikethrough but it's all over the text, you can't cheat).
    Any idea?

    Here I am (sorry I didn't answer before, during the weekend i am not in my office).
    You didn't tell us why do you want to change the text box width? That could help us to give you a better answer.
    However if you need to have different text box width you can use this method:
    Only one paragraph style with only one rule column width, "vertical line" and grep style.

  • How do you automatically create paragraph styles from a document?

    Hi,
    (posted in general indesign as well - advised to post over here)
    I know I've seen this somewhere but can't for the life of me find it...
    How can I automatically create paragraph and character styles in an InDesign CC document? I'm sure I saw a script to do this and though I'll download that later...only i can't find it now.
    The scenario is that I have a document created by someone else which has lots of paragraph styles, but each one has over-rides on (so they're not really much use). I'm wanting something that will go through the document and create all the different styles that have been used.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi
    I was given this tip to try: PerfectPrepText (http://indesignsecrets.com/perfectpreptext-a-smart-way-to-style-local-formatting.php) but couldn't get it to do what i was after unfortunately...however it did point me in the direction of something that does the trick:
    PowerStyles (DTP Tools - Power Styles for Adobe InDesign).
    Not sure if it's available for CC yet though.
    Thanks

  • When I rename a paragraph style can I automatically apply it to the paragraphs using the old style?

    I am using RoboHelp 8.
    I want to rename a paragraph style from Body to Bodytext (because the new css we have to use uses Bodytext).
    When I rename the Body style to Bodytext, all my body text switches to the Normal paragraph style.
    Is there no way to automatically apply the Bodytext style to all paragraphs that were using the Body style?
    I am trying to avoid having to apply the style to each paragraph individually which would take forever.
    Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Sorry but there isn't an automatic way.
    You will need to fix this using a multi-file find and replace tool.
    If you look at the HTML you will see something like <p class="body">.
    Search for that and replace with <p class="bodytext">
    Make sure you create a copy of the project before you start.

  • Can automatic master application be scripted by paragraph style?

    Help! I've been trying to figure out how to do this for a few days now. I could have sworn I've seen this done somewhere, but I can't find any references now. Someone suggested that it might be scriptable, so...
    I'd like to conditionally select a specific master page template based on a paragraph style.
    For example, the first paragraph style on every chapter in my book is "Title (Chapter)." When that paragraph style shows up, I'd like InDesign to automatically apply the appropriate master page template to that page, but default back to the standard master for all following pages.
    Anyhow know how to do this?

    Hi
    There is a solution from freelance book design but is not gree. A more basic script can be found by google searching for ApplyMasterpageToStyleCS5.
    I hope it helps...

  • Automatic numbering (non-paragraph style)

    Some years ago I purchased InSequence from Virginia Systems to add automatic numbering not related to a paragraph style but anywhere in text. Although the interface is clumsy and was never updated, it was useful as the only workaround out  there. But they refused to provide free updates to a program already overpriced. Each time a new InDesign would come out, they made you fork out another $120 or so for an update. Now with InDesign 4, I have grown impatient with their greedy attitude to their longtime users. I cannot update to CS4 without the numbering (since I use it in many critical documents) but am at a loss what to do.
       So my question is this: Does anyone know of any other plug-in that will do this? I am a little surprised that Adobe never added this feature, but it is one I need. I'd appreciate any advice on this.

    I understand your reply, but if you had used the program and realized that there WAS NO development over the years, just minor tweaks (all of them completely invisible to the user) to make it compatible with every new version of InDesign, you would see the reason for the frustration. It is only reasonable to pay for what people have worked to improve. No argument there.
       In any case, the simplest way to describe what is needed is this: Imagine that you want to make an article that has, say 50 items in it, and the number of the items does not (and cannot) be associated with a paragraph tag. Kind of like footnote numbers, which can be inserted anywhere but which can be updated to keep in sequence as new numbers are added or moved. That is what is needed, and that is just what InSequence does.
         I hope this makes sense now.

  • Improve the implementation of graphic and paragraph styles

    The implementation of Graphic and Paragraph Styles should be more consistent:
    You can currently edit the attributes of paragraph styles (e.g., point size) but not of graphic styles (outer glow). With graphic styles, you have to overwrite the existing style rather than edit it.
    Graphic Styles have the concept of "breaking the link" whereas Paragraph Styles don't.
    Add the ability to select objects based on a paragraph style (yes, you can select based on Attribute, but not all objects with a specific paragraph style).
    Combine graphic and paragraph styles. For example, I want a style with a 12 pt font and an outer glow.

    Same thing happening here.
    You can though first create some type with a 12 point stroke , then define a new paragraph style, and even though it says 10pt will apply 12pt.
    If you have not looked into graphic styles, that might be a better option for stokes. You can
    Move the fill on top of the stroke (allows you to use a different color for stroke, so the orignal sahep of type doe not get squeezed)
    Use multiple strokes aroudn type
    Set the corner options to round
    For appearance & graphic style, the secret to type is to first set your type fill and stroke to none (this removes the stylization at the character level), then apply strokes and fills in the appearance palette at the type level only. This way the stylization won't fight with each other.

  • InDesign CC is bringing in style sheets from Word and other places that I copy type from, like email, Acrobat. In InDesign CS4, whenever I brought in text from outside it assumed the paragraph style applied to the waiting text box. The loss of this functi

    I used to be able to get text from a Word doc (copy it), and then go into my CS4 InDesign file and paste it into a waiting box that had a paragraph style assigned to it and boom, it would take on the assigned paragraph style of that text box. Now it brings in the style from wherever the text came from. If the font looks similar to what was there it can be too hard to tell that it's different. When you are working on a book with 200 pages and copying text from Word docs and dropping it in here and there in InDesign, it causes alot of extra work and problems.
    In fact I have lost alot of security functions I used to have in CS4 in CC2014 in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat and it is making me want to go back to CS4 in a hurry.

    I actually FINALLY found the answer!!!! In the preferences area you choose Clipboard Handling and then you choose "Text Only" under When Pasting Text and Tables from Other Applications (see photo).

  • Image in paragraph style?

    I use CS3 - Windows XP
    Hello
    I am publishing a photobook in several languages, and before I start description of each photograph I need to put in the flag of the corresponding language. Kind of like a drop cap.
    I was wondering if there is some way to automate this process using styles, because at the moment I am just putting a tiny graphics frame with the flag image (GIF) in front of the corresponding text, making the text flow around it , which is quite tedious work (there is like 200+ photos and it seems like there will be 8 languages)
    I was wondering if it is possible to place an image into a paragraph style in some way, or incorporate the image as a bullet, or something like that.
    Thank you

    you can add some "tag" as flag description in text:
    [DE] hdf shkdjhfkjhskdjh fk skdhfk
    [BG] khsd kjfhkds f ds
    [PL] kjdh kajs hk ask dkas
    next you can use script to replace these "tags" with images
    or you can use Find/Replace and search for "[DE]" and replace with clipboard "~C" (of course without ")

  • Defining a background color for a paragraph style

    Hello and please excuse this very basic question, but I am completely stumped.
    How do I simply define a background color for a paragraph style? I cannot use a table etc. because the styles are mapped during an XML conversion. Code lines should receive a gray background box to separate them from the text.
    Also, is there a way to force line breaks whithin words for a specific style? The text, formated in Courier, should just fill the space with a fixed width per character and break wherever the line ends.

    With some drawbacks it's doable using two paragraph tags.
    The first tag, e.g. "Line" is empty (no text), and it has a reference page graphic that's just a rectangle filled 100% with color and set to have a percentage tint so that the text will "show through" it.
    "Line" is also set to have a negative space below it, e.g. -12 points.
    "Code" paratag has the actual code text in it, and it's set to have a negative space above, e.g. -12 points.
    I've done projects where I have multiple Line paratags differing by the number of code lines needing to be shaded, e.g. Line1, Line2, Line3.
    Unfortunately there isn't a way to automatically have the line expand to the correct depth of the Code paragraph, although I believe this would probably be something that could be done as a Framescript, to run through a document and create new "line" paratags of the correct depth depending on how many Code paragraphs or lines are in the following paratag.

  • How do I stop ID from assigning a paragraph style to the TABLES?

    In-Design is adding "H1" paragraph style to EVERY table is inserted, so the table headers formatting is affected by that H1 style.
    I guess it chooses H1 because it's the FIRST style I created (and then modified the "basic paragraph" to modify the rest of default text).
    It's like it's adding "Style_ID=1"
    I tried placing the character in different places, to make sure it's not the style the cursor is in which is inherited, and no, no matter where I place the cursor, when I "insert table" the cursor is automatically placed into the first cell (header cell) and the paragraph "H1" is selected (and applied)
    Adding a table with NO headers does the same, so it's not me that confused style names and applied some to the wrong place.
    H1 is not used and table and cells styles are not based in it.
    I don't know whether it's a bug, but IT FEELS like a bug.
    How do I expect it to work?
    I expect that by creating a table, NO style be applied other than the table's. (Not even the basic one)

    You might have set the default paragraph style for the document (which you set by selecting a paragraph style with no text frame selected) to your H1 paragraph style.
    Make sure it's on "Basic paragraph" when you select the type tool..

  • Quick paragraph style application transformation ... or reverse engineering a document the hard way?

    Hi everyone,
    I'm using Indesign 5.5 for Windows and have inherited a technical document with no styling applied (not even text threads or auto-pagination), but all the fonts are in the correct sizes and colours. So it looks ok in print, but trying to actually do anything with it is a nightmare.  For obvious reasons I WANT to apply paragraph styles to the document so I can generate a new auto-updating TOC, maintain and add to it, and all the other good stuff that means.
    My question is this - is my only choice to go through page by page and apply new styles (matching their current appearence) to every different heading and bullet point, or is there a nice easy way (or script) that i can use to whizz through the document for me, neatly applying a new style to each different font variety or element it finds (not altering their appearence) and leaving me with a nice list of styles I can rename (then take all the credit for? ha!) Basically take a document that's already been put together wrong, and make it right? I think this might've been imported into InDesign from something like Quark, hence the state it's in, but I don't have access to anything but this version. Any help you could offer would be great.  Oh, and if (as I suspect) my only option is indeed to apply all the styles manually one line at a time, then feel free to point and laugh, I doubtless deserve it.
    Thanks!
    Phil

    If you need to reproduce the existing page layouts, I'd suggest you read up more on what paragraph styles can do, before annihilating whatever layout and flow behaviors have been stuck on the content. For example, if level "X" headings always start at the top of a text frame, or top of a page, or even top of a right page, or top of a left page, a paragraph style property can do this. So you'd want to create and apply a paragraph that does this to those paragraphs before you thread text frames; the top of <whatever> frame paragraph property will keep the paragraphs in place.
    It is possible to create paragraph styles with properties that behave crazily when they do what you define for them. For example, you can define a paragraph style that sets the style of the paragraph that's created when you press Enter/Return. You can also use the smartness built into the Next Style property. If a paragraph style, say Head1 is defined to create a new paragraph when you press Enter/Return, it can also apply its next style property to the paragraph follows Head1 in the same text selection. So, if you select a paragraph that's supposed to become Head1 (which defines its next style as BodyAfterHead1) and also select the paragraph that follows it,  and then hold down Ctrl+Click on the Head1 style's name in the Paragraph Styles panel, Apply "Head1" then Next Style appears. If BodyAfterHead1 defines Body as its next style, and more than two consecutive paragraphs are selected, Head1 will be applied to the first paragraph, BodyAfterHead1 will be applied to the second paragraph, and Body will be applied to the third and following paragraphs.
    So, you'll be investing in setting up the Next Style property for paragraph styles, and selecting as many consecutive paragraphs as needed for applying a pattern of styles that agrees with your next style definitions. Each time you use this feature, you're collecting benefits from your investment.
    If you need to reproduce the look of the layout on some number of pages, you could export to PDF and use a script to efficiently place each page of a multi-page PDF on a "PDF layer" you create, that appears on every document page in the ID document, lock and move the layer below the active document layer, and use it as a placement underlay.
    Search Google for terms like "InDesign apply style and next style," "InDesign place multipage pdf script," "InDesign installing and using scripts," "InDesign paragraph style keep options," and "InDesign start paragraph options," without quotes, for informative links to anywhere on the Web, as well as on these Adobe forums. To limit the searches to Adobe forums only, include "forums.adobe" without quotes in the search query.

  • [CS3 AS] set paragraph style, go to next paragraph, set paragraph style, etc.

    hello,
    i'm pretty much a noob at scripting. i'd like to automate applying paragraph styles to a document with reviews.
    basically, i want to place the cursor in a paragraph (manually), and have a script do the following: set paragraph style 5, go to the next paragraph, set paragraph style 1, go to the next paragraph, set paragraph style 2, go to the next paragraph, set paragraph style 3.
    help?
    (i specified AS as i think i might understand it, but JS probably works as well)

    Assuming you set the relationship of one style to the next using the 'Next Style' definition in the paragraph styles, then the following should do the trick (assuming you have your cursor in the first paragraph).
    > // Follows next paragraph style setting until Same Style or No Paragraph Style
    >// Get the current pagaraph based on user cursor location
    var myCurrentParagraph = app.documents[0].selection[0].paragraphs[0];
    do
    ] // Currently applied paragraph style
    var myCurrentParagraphStyle = myCurrentParagraph.appliedParagraphStyle;
    ] // Next Style for current paragraph style
    var myNextParagraphStyle = myCurrentParagraph.appliedParagraphStyle.nextStyle;
    ] // Check current style and next style are not the same or No Paragraph Style
    if (myCurrentParagraphStyle == myNextParagraphStyle
    || myNextParagraphStyle == app.documents[0].paragraphStyles.item("[No Paragraph Style]") ) {
    ]] exit(); }
    ] // Get next paragraph in chain
    var myNextParagraph = myCurrentParagraph.insertionPoints[-1].paragraphs[0];
    ] // If we are end of story then stop
    if (myNextParagraph == myCurrentParagraph) { exit(); }
    ] // Apply next style to next paragraph
    myNextParagraph.appliedParagraphStyle = myNextParagraphStyle;
    ] // Restart the process
    myCurrentParagraph = myNextParagraph;
    >while (true)
    Note that the process will end when the Next Style setting of one paragraphs is Same Style or when the Next Style is No Paragraph Style. There would be other ways to end the process, such as limiting it to a certain number of steps if the number of steps was always the same. Let me know.

  • Framemaker 8 problem with paragraph styles

    Hi,
    I manage a documentation (one file) including paragraph styles organized like that :
    -- Chapter
         |--- Sub chapter
           |--- Sub Sub chapter
    My question is simple
    When a create a PDF file from my document, including bookmarks, I'm encountering the following problem :
    The "chapter 4", "sub chapter 4" and "sub sub chapter 4" paragraphs are created correctly. The bookmarks are created with the correct place.
    Like that :
    |---- chapter 4
      |---- sub chapter 4
       |----- sub sub chapter 4
    BUT
    The "sub sub chapter "5 paragraph styles are created into the "Chapter 4" structure, added with the "sub sub chapter" of Chapter 4. And the Chapter 5 just contains the "chapter 5" and "sub chapter 5" bookmarks.
    Like that :
    Chapter 4
        |---- sub chapter 4
           |---- sub sub chapter 4
           |---- sub sub chapter 5
    Chapter 5
       |--- sub chapter 5
    After checking the structure of my document, I do not find any thing which could create this problem.
    The paragraph styles seems to be correct.
    Thank you so so much to help me because I don't know how to replace the "sub sub chapter 5" below the" sub chapter 5".
    Phil ;o)

    There are a few ways to go with this. One is to put all the files in a Book,
    temporarily, and set the one with the correct style definition as the
    source, then synchronize the paragraph styles. This will change ALL styles
    with the same names throughout all the documents, and add any styles that
    are present in the source, but not in one of the other files, so it is a bit
    risky, especially if any styles are based on or [Basic
    Paragraph] itself is used in one of the files and it isn't already defined
    exactly the same in all files.
    You can also open any file and go to the Paragraph Styles panel menu and
    choose Load Styles, then select the style you want to load, and how to
    handle a conflict (Use Incoming), which will give you more control over what
    happens.
    Or each time you open a file and get the missing font warning you can go to
    Find Font and select the missing font, then pcik your substitute, check the
    redefine styles box, and click Change All. This would probably be the best
    choice since it doesn't depend on style names to make the correct changes.
