Automatic power on when AC is switched on?

I've added a UPS, but this means there are now two buttons to press to get started; the UPS power button and the Mac mini power button.
How can I configure the Mac mini firmware to power on automatically when the AC is switched from off to on?
I've asked Apple technical support, but the technician was only aware of the +System Preferences+ -> +Energy Saver+ -> +Start up automatically after a power failure+ checkbox, but I don't want to use this because it would only work if I turned off the UPS power without using +Shut Down+ first. The technician agreed that this might be bad for my data.
I've checked the "nvram -p" command in Terminal, but none of the variables listed look interesting. Is there a published list of variables recognised by the firmware?

May I ask why you are hard powering your UPS off?
Good question. As in the other thread, mainly because the power is expensive and not constant, but also because the UPS battery would be more damaged by uncontrolled discharge while unattended than by irregular usage.
It isn't good for the UPS to be power cycled all that often really, ...
This is a new UPS, and it requires power at least for four hours every three months, according to the manufacturer's specifications. This is probably so that the lead acid battery does not suplhate. There's no specification of minimum power cycles.

  • 6700: automatic power-off in car

    Hello everybody.
I just got a nokia 6700 classic and installed it in a new mercedes E-class cradle (original mercedes handsfree kit).
My problem is, that the phone does not switch off automatically after e.g. 10 minutes after the ignition is turned off (power off in cardle). Instead the phone is running till the power of integrated battery is down.
Is there a chance to configure an automatic power off when no external power is connected (ignition off) ?
    Thanx a lot,
    Marc

Not sure, but normally the phone will not turn off when (or after some time delay..) the ignition is turned off... In fact the Cradle (car kit..) turns off when the ignition is turned off or automatically turns off after some time delay when the  phone is removed from it...

  • HT1766 automatic backup to icloud what does switched off mean? power off?

automatic backup says phone should be 'switched off'. does this mean short close at the top or power off?

I just reviewed HT1766 (the document where you originated your post) and even used the browser search feature but nowhere could I find the words "switched off."
The only statement I could find was: "Automatically backup your camera roll, accounts, documents, and settings when this iPhone is plugged in, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi."
The above statement does list the correct requirements for automatic backup. Where are you seeing "switched off"?

  • Can you automatically start programs when you switch on your imac

can you automatically start programs when you switch on your imac

Yes, go to: Apple / System Preferences / User Groups / Login Items and add the Application to the list of things automatically set to start at login.
However, you should limit it to those that you need or use, because adding a lot will needlessly slow down your startup time and use more RAM.

Oop'  late on the draw again, glad your question is answered.

  • HT1766 Can icloud automatically back up when it is not plugged in to a power source?

Can icloud ever automatically back up without it being plugged in to a power source?

    No.
From the Storage and Backup Screen:
"Automatically back up… when this iPhone is plugged in, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi."

  • Does the battery charging in the macbook pro retina automatically cut off when the battery is fully charged?

Does the battery charging in the macbook pro retina automatically cut off when the battery is fully charged? or does it continue charging? In which case,is it better for the battery life to switch off the power supply or leave it on while using the macbook?

Yes, and the pilot light on the MagSafe2 connector changes from orange to green. If you unplug, you will start draining the battery again, whereas if plugged the Mac will take power from the brick and leave the battery in a charged state.

  • Noisy power supply when running of UPS?... follow up post.

Ned/The hatter your input here would be most appreciated along with anyone else using a UPS with your mac pro. Please read on...
Having just concluded a rather detailed any lengthy post over in the power mac g5 forum with regards to loud buzzing noise from the power supply running of battery backup.
I recemmend reviewing the link below for the full and i think interesting read...
    Linked here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=665537&tstart=0
To sum it up it concluded that my model of UPS (Belkin) produces a simulated sine wave. I am unsure of technicals here, but this then makes the power supply in powermac G5's make a nasty electrical noise as the unit works to sort it out. What is ideal is a pure sine wave i understand.
The reason for my post was that i was concerned the noise was a sign of harm being done to my mac. No one has said either way yet that this noise is either just a nuisance and it something thats got to be lived or that its actually harming my machine.
Anyhow it turns out that the RS series from APC also makes the G5 powermac make a noise. And i am aware that Ned along with some others use the APC RS series with there mac pro's. What i am looking to find out is... Do you have a noise from your power supplys when running on battery backup with your new shiney mac pro's?
The APC smart ups series however does not make the powermac G5 make a noise this has been confirmed by several users. I guess this is because these models produce pure wave sine.
As you can see this has all got very complicated and over my head.
The reason for me coming into this forum and asking about noisy power supplys when using certain UPS is because shortly i will be switching to a Mac pro. And if the power supplys in these are different and dont make a noise when running under battery with certain APC Rs's and the new Dual form belkin units then i wont return my current belkin model in exchange for a APC smart ups. I will just live it for a short time whilst i own my G5 and just hope it wont do any damage if and when we have a power outage.
Thank you to anyone that can guide or assist me with this dilemma. Cheers Pob

    Pobster,
Switching power supplies (such as those used in computers) do not require a "pure" analog sine wave input; they are more than capable of running on PWM/stepped sine wave input. The noise from the power supply when running on power from a PWM output UPS does not indicate that damage is being done to your machine; it's a harmless side effect.
Some equipment will be damaged if powered via PWM input; items with compressors (refrigerators, air conditioners) definitely fall into this category, as well as some medical equipment and telecom equipment.
I live in an area with notoriously dirty power; a UPS is critical in my case (I'd argue that it is critical in any case, however). I've ran my equipment on UPSs for many years, and the price has dropped significantly. I've got one APC SmartUPS with pure sine wave output which was purchased for me by a client, but most of my equipment is running on UPS with PWM output. It's not uncommon for me to have 20-30 power events in a given day - most of them transient voltage drops or spikes; I've still got an old Sun Sparc 10 file server that's still chugging along.
A couple of interesting articles for your perusal:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20051009043816537
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulse-width_modulation
A quick google will turn up lots more information on the topic. APC used to have a white paper on their site which talked about this very topic.
Most manufacturers provide connected equipment insurance - tripp lite, for example, provides $250,000(US) coverage. I've never known anyone who actually needed to use this coverage - I certainly haven't .
In brief: A UPS with PWM output will not harm your computer; switching power supplies are more than capable of handling this. If the noise bothers you, look for a UPS with "pure sine wave" output - you will pay more for this feature; it's an aesthetic choice in this case.

    Hi!
I need to load a GET url that si very long. On other browsers, I can load the url. In firefox 3.6, no.

The url is sometingh like this (this is correctly loaded, but it could be longer)

Firefox should have problems with long GET data appended to an URL (long would be over 64k).<br />
If there are problems then it is possible that an extension is the cause of that.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]

  • How do I get mac to only recognise my tv monitor when it is switched on?

For example when my tv is switched off the cursor would be lost for a bit as it would be where the tv is. Also sometimes some windows would open in the tv monitor so to access it i would have to first turn the tv on. Is there a away for the mac to detect which external monitors are switched on so the cursor stays in the desired area?
    Thanks

The Mac uses a highly-parameterized display Driver, customized for the actual capabilities of the display. The settings are determined by a query to the display at power-on, when the Mac queries every attached display. The display name is also reported.
System preferences > Displays > (Detect Displays) ...
... replicates the query to update what displays are present and their names and capabilities. So using that command when the display state is changed off to on or on to off should adjust the configuration to current state of things.

  • Can my USB Drive be configured to power off when the iMac is powered off?

I am using a Lacie 500GB external USB drive. The drive remains powered on when my iMac is powered off. Is there any way to have the drive automatically power off?

    Hello Jack
The s.o.p. for shutdown should be to eject the drive, turn it off then shutdown the iMac. The s.o.p for startup should be to startup the iMac then turn on the external HD. Many external HD manufactures do support a sleep function that allows the drive to sleep when the iMac is sleeping.

  • Toshiba 32RV635D does not power off when computer shuts off

    Hello,
I've inherited a Toshiba 32RV635D. I have a linux-based PVR (Mythtv) hooked up to the TV via HDMI, plugged into a Nvidia GT610.
With my previous TV, a cheap Vistron LCD panel, it would go into standby when the PC hibernated, and would power-on when the PC came back on.
This required no configuration from me, it just did it. The Toshiba TV doesn't.
With this Toshiba TV, when the PVR powers down the TV screen goes blank but is actually still on - the power led remains green.
Same with the other way round - if I put the TV in standby and power-up the PVR, the TV doesn't respond and I have to manually bring it out of standby.
I've updated the firmware and this hasn't changed anything, and I also can't find anything related to power management within the TVs menus. I've even tried just pulling the HDMI cable from the back of the TV so it has no physical active inputs, and it still doesn't drop to standby.
The Amazon page for the TV mentions power management features, and from what I understand it should behave in the way I was expecting it to.
I've read a lot about HDMI-CEC, but to use this with my existing kit I would need to buy a USB-CEC adapter, and that seems a bit odd seeing as my previous cheap-as-chips TV just did this...
Also, the various utilities within linux would suggest it thinks its making the right noises - running 'xset q' when the computer is idle tells me that 'Monitor is off' when actually it's not.
    Any clues?

Ricklous, it may be helpful if you have a look at the url
    http://www.toshiba-om.net/LCD/PDF/English/Country_Specific/RV635-323742-English-Specific.pdf
if you wish to download the English edition owners manual for your model, I have not read it through, but it may prove helpful to you.
Incidentally, I have the model 32RL900A, and find that a PVR plugged into the SCART socket claims the screen whenever it turns on while the TV is tuned to a FTA (Free To Air) channel, and then "hands back" the screen when it (the PVR) switches off, and this, I found out, is a characteristic of the SCART system.
I don't know if this information is useful to you, but hope it helps.

  • Power consumption for router and switch

I have a linksys EZSX88W switch which I checked power consumption of 70ma idle. It's supplied by the adapter which has an output of 1000ma. Not sure what the consumption when switch is being used. I also have an WRT54GS but haven't checked consumption yet, but it's powered by the same 1000ma adapter. In an effort to save energy-that -GREEN FEELING- I was thinking of using on power adapter to power bothe the router and switch. Has anyone tried this yet?? Also if I posted this in the wrong area I hope the moderator will move the post.
    thanks

So you are thinking of Powering on both the Devices using a single Power Adapter? Well never tried to make both the devices use a single power adapter. As far as i think its not possible. But if you still wish, you can give a try and check if that works for you or not.

  • Can I STOP my powerbook from automatically waking up when I open my display

    Hey all,
Have spent literally hours trying to find this, but I'm at a loss. Perhaps somebody knows.
The latch on my powerbook 12" 867mhz PowerBook broke off. Now the display regularly opens a little bit, even though it's in a protective case.
Does anybody know of a way that I can disable it automatically waking up when I open the display?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Antonie!
Not knowing where you found that info, I don't know if that is a correct command.
And I would guess that it is referring to entering the Command sudo pmset lidwake 0, in Terminal, which can be started from the Utilities folder.
But, because of the fact that the procedure was poorly written, I would hesiate to follow the advice, unless another poster, with more knowledge than I, of Terminal commands, confirms it is valid.
"When I open System Profiler -> Hardware -> Power -> System Power Settings it says that for both AC and Battery use "Wake on clamshell open: yes". I'd love for it say "no". How do I do that?"
Open System Preferences > Energy Saver: Are there any setting in there that can be adjusted.
EDIT: I found a site that Better explains the Terminal Command, and how to execute it.
