Automatic setup security enough or switch to WEP?

Been a while since I've had a wireless and I'm wondering if I should set up a WEP or leave the WPA2 Personal key in place?  Also any other added security measures I should do to protect my router?  (Don't need the how-to's just the you-should's)  I remember on my D-Link I checked off an option to refuse pings from outside the system (I think, it was a long time ago).  It was to protect against outside computers pinging a router repeatedly until the router simply resets all the basic settings, including admin passwords, is this something I need to do on my Linksys WRT54G2?

Hello Dorainet, WPA2 Personal is much more secure than WEP. You can leave it to that security mode. But the downside of this if you have old wireless device that doesn't support WPA2 Personal might encounter problem connecting to your network. In that case then just use WEP and use 128bit for your encryption. To secure the settings of your router, just create a router password and not use the default which is admin. You can also enable the Block Anonymous Internet Requests inside the Security tab. By enabling the Block WAN Request feature, you can prevent your network from being "pinged," or detected, by other Internet users. The Block WAN Request feature also reinforces your network security by hiding your network ports. Both functions of the Block WAN Request feature make it more difficult for outside users to work their way into your network. This feature is enabled by default. That's about it for the securities in your router.
Beside setting up securities in your router, you can also limit the Maximum Number of  DHCP Users to the numbers of your PC's only. By default your router's Maximum Number of  DHCP Users is set to 50.
Hope that helps.

  • I changed my WRT54G security settings from WPA to WEP

I changed my WRT54G security settings from WPA to WEP and now one of my latops (Dell 5100) will not connect wirelessly. It is using a linksys wireless-B notebook adapter. I am at a loss at how to reconnect this to my wireless network.

Go to the setup page of the router on the wired computer and click on the Wireless tab, check the network name(SSID),change the Wireless Channel to 11-2.462 GHz,Keep the SSID broadcast enable and click on save settings...Click on the subtab Wireless Security and change the Security mode to WEP or WPA as per your requirement. If you are using WEP then, note down the KEY1 as the network key(case sensitive)...
Now,on the laptops, delete the preferred network and then, try to connect the Wireless Network.

I am being prompted to enter security questions when making a purchase on my new IPad.  I don't believe I have ever setup security questions on my apple id.  I have tried logging into my apple id and have chosen the security and priviacy settings to set up security questions.  However I am prompted to enter answers to security questions and am told they don't match.  How to I create new security questions or reset them?

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, clicking here and picking a method for your country, and filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • Is a Beta release secure enough for e-commerce ?

I know beta versions are generally''' not''' recommended as everyday browsers, but now that current Firefox betas are conceptually more like release candidates, are they stable and secure enough to be used for e-commerce (ebay and the likes) just like a normal release version? If nothing, they should receive security fixes before the release, whilst critical bugs should have already been dealt with in earlier stages,is that understanding correct?
edit:yes this was posted with a nightly but the question was really aimed at current beta releases.

Firefox 8.0 beta becomes a release version today 11/08 at 8am PST. Security is no issue with any version, as all supported versions are going to get an update today.

  • Can you automatically start programs when you switch on your imac

can you automatically start programs when you switch on your imac

Yes, go to: Apple / System Preferences / User Groups / Login Items and add the Application to the list of things automatically set to start at login.
However, you should limit it to those that you need or use, because adding a lot will needlessly slow down your startup time and use more RAM.

  • My Telus wireless only works with WEP, but if I switch to WEP the wireless goes down on the other Windows computer being used in the same house.  Is there a way for both of us to get wireless internet or do one of us have to be connected by the ethernet?

My Telus wireless only works with WEP, but if I switch to WEP, the wireless on the other computers in the house (which is Windows and WPA) stops working. My computer works with the ethernet cord but I want to be wireless too!  Do one of us have to sacrifice our wireless?

  • How can I make my mac secure enough to do banking

Hi. I'm an old Mac person who was a PC person (and still am) but I have a new Macbook. I want to make it secure enough to do banking and to be able to buy stuff. How do I do this here?
Currently I am hooked via a modem until I move and get my cable modem back.
    Any help appreciated.
    Tommy McDonell in NYC

What are you doing currently to make your Windows PC secure enough or is that an effort in futility with Windows?
Assuming you are doing banking via web access, this is already provided by your bank as Kappy indicated. When using Apple's Safari web browser (or any up to date browser for OS X such as Firefox, Opera, etc.), there will be a secure sign or lock (with Safari shown at the top right hand corner of the browser window) when accessing a secure website such as your bank's website.
Same thing when making an online purchase via a website that is secure.

  • Are OCI Function calls secure enough?

    Dear Friends,
I would like to know if the OCI programming is used these days. If yes, are these calls secure enough to take care of the ever increasing frauds.
    Regards
    Bhaskar Divecha

I am using OCI in my application and using it connect to an Oracle Instance over the network.
How secure will the username, password and data be?
Is it sent over the network as clear text? Or is there any encryption involved?
What is Oracle Advanced Security? How can I configure this?
Found this thread, but it wasnt very helpful.

    Hi Abhinav,
To perform Security check for Consumer means to assign proper rights to the user who gonna use consumer master data and who gonna access consumer master data. Thus to ensure that no data of consumer getting changed illegally and every things happens within the system.

  • How to setup security manager for applet at runtime?

    hello everyone,
I am wonder if there is a way to setup security manager at runtime. This is what I am trying to do:
    1. Create a Applet GUI and allow users to specify in an input dialog box of the URL they like make connection to.
I know there is two way of do this
    1. Is modify java.policy file and specify the URL SocketPermission to connect to.
    2. setup signed certificate applet.
But, I would to try to see if there is a way to have applet make connection at runtime when users specify the URL.
    Anyone have any ideas.
    Thanks.

    Thanks, Peter
Going over some articles you and references that you pointed out was very useful on how the java security model work and a little bit history too.
So, I am assuming that I can make my own securitymanager class that defines the permission of the applet that I am working, using Permission, SecurityManager, ....etc class right? I just want to be clear on what I am going to be doing.
If you have any other thoughts, Thanks,

  • Doesn't automatically join my default network after switching to WEP security and 10.9.1 OSX

I needed to change my security settings to work with my Verizon router and Airport for streaming to be WEP.  Ever since I've done that my MacBook Pro can wake up and reconnect to the network bit my iMac cannot, the network needs to be selected.  Both are running 10.9.1 and both use WEP. Can't figure out why that's the case.

I intially had it set to WPA-2, but when I tried setting up Airport Express connected to my AV receiver to stream music, I couldn't set it up.  I needed to switch over to WEP.  I will try it again though and see if Verizon can help.  Thanks Donald Morgan

  • How to setup IFS: do not switch language automatic?

I installed an IFS 9 English version on english version windows 2000. It's all ok when i visit from localhost. However when i visit the IFS server from another computer installed with simplified Chinese Windows 2000, it's fail.
Would anyone can help me resolve this problem? Thank you very much!

Dear Barry and Apple Support Community,
Thanks for your suggestion, but alas, I made the mistake of reading Apple's Unsolicited Idea Submission Policy:
    http://www.apple.com/legal/intellectual-property/policies/ideas.html
It clearly suggests that Apple Computer doesn't want such submissions, but worse, were I to submit the idea, it would in principle become the intellectual property of Apple Computer.  If Apple were to promise to implement such an enhancement in a timely manner that would be fine by me.  However, if Apple were to sit on the idea, that would make it more difficult for an independent developer to implement such a system.  So that doesn't seem like the best thing for me to do at this time.
So I'm back at square one.
    Cheers, Edouard

  • How do I stop automatic Setup.exe downloads?

I regularly visit an online video site for films and t.v series.  Recently Setup.exe files have been downloading automatically from the site when I open pages for some series.  Is there a way to prevent this without disabling the normal function of something else?
    Many thanks for input (-:

The update alerts are fake, and are intended to dupe you into installing malware or disclosing private information so that your identity can be stolen.
You might get the alerts when visiting a website that has been hacked. Don't visit the site again. If applicable, notify the site administrator of the problem, but don't send email to an unknown party.
If you get the alerts when visiting well-known websites such as Google, YouTube, or Facebook, then they're the result of an attack on your router that has caused you to get false results from looking up the addresses of Internet servers. Requests sent to those sites are redirected to a server controlled by the attacker.
The router's documentation should tell you how to reset it to the factory default state. Usually there's a pinhole switch somewhere in the back. It may be labeled "RESET." Insert the end of a straightened paper clip or a similar tool and press the button inside for perhaps 15 seconds, or as long as the instructions specify.
Then go through the initial setup procedure. I can't be specific, because it's different for every model. The key points are these:
    1. Don't allow the router to be administered from the WAN (Internet) port, if it has that option. Most do.
    2. Set a strong password to protect the router's settings: at least ten random upper- and lower-case letters and digits.  Don't use the default password or any other that could be guessed. Any password that you can remember is weak.
    3. If the router is wireless, or if you have a wireless access point on the network, use "WPA 2 Personal" security and set a different strong password to protect the network. If the router or access point doesn't support WPA 2, it's obsolete and must be replaced.
During the time the router was compromised, you were redirected to bogus websites. If you ever connected to a secure site and got a warning from your browser that the identity of the server could not be verified, and you dismissed that warning in order to log in, assume that your credentials for the site have been stolen and that the attacker has control of the account. This warning also applies to all websites on which you saw the fake update alerts.
If you downloaded and installed what you thought was a software update, ask for instructions.
