Automatic shutdown no longer works as before

Since installing Mountain Lion the shutdown at a specific time seems to only work when the computer is awak. With Lion my computer would shutdown at 10 pm everyday and start back up at 4pm when I returned from work all ready for me. But with Mountaion Lion it never does this. Testing this reviles that it only works if the computer is awake. So I wil have to make sure my computer never goes to sleep (where's the engery savings in that?) or no longer use the automatic shut down feature and just shut it down when I'm finished like I had to do in the 90's with Windows. I'm really hoping this is not the new way for this teature to work and that it was only an oversite and wasn't found during QA (you do have a QA department doen't you?). Please return this to it's previous working order. Leaving my computer awake for hours just so it can shut down automatically makes no sense.

Hello:
I suggest you put the Mac to sleep and never shut it down (unless you are going to be away for several days).  A Mac (when sleeping) consumes a minimal amount of energy.  IMHO (not a scientific analysis) electronics fail sooner when repetitively turned off and on.

  • Mythtv, auto shutdown no longer working, scheduler.cpp ?

    Following a recent update the automatic shutdown of my backend is no longer working (well, at least not reliably).
    I have 3 scripts set up in the relevant sections of the mythtv-setup to check if myth is ok to shut down, set the new wakeup time and perform the actual shutdown. These scripts still work alright, but the backend is not initiating the shutdown any more in some cases.
    Lots of trial and error makes me think that this is somehow related to scheduler.cpp, but I am not sure if this is the case or how to fix it.
    I think I have established a pattern:
    Scenario 1:
    - Boot backend
    - do nothing else (e.g. start remote frontend or mythfrontend on the backend)
    - automatic shutdown does not work
    Scenario 2:
    - Boot backend
    - start remote frontend
    - shut down frontend
    - automatic shutdown does not work
    - restart backend service (without reboot)
    - automatic shutdown works
    I also notice that in scenario 2 (when automatic shutdown works) there are a whole heap of these kind of messages right until shutdown occurs:
    2013-04-29 19:18:07.592125 N [660/738] Expire autoexpire.cpp:641 (SendDeleteMessages) - Expiring 156 MB for 1073 at 2013-04-13T11:50:20Z => Hulk

    In scenario 2 (successful) I see the following in the log just before the above auto expire stuff:
    Scheduler scheduler.cpp:2307 (HandleRunSchedulerStartup) - Scheduler: Seem to be woken up by USER
    then a whole heap of auto expiry stuff and finally:
    Scheduler scheduler.cpp:2862 (CheckShutdownServer) - CheckShutdownServer returned - OK to shutdown
    2013-04-29 19:19:55.276775 N [660/735] Scheduler scheduler.cpp:2947 (ShutdownServer) - Running the command to set the next scheduled wakeup time :-

    sudo /home/laffi/scripts/MythShutdown
    In scenario 1 (unsuccessfull shutdown) I also get
    Scheduler scheduler.cpp:2307 (HandleRunSchedulerStartup) - Scheduler: Seem to be woken up by USER
    and then autoexpiry, but then, once a frontend connects:
    ProcessRequest mainserver.cpp:1385 (HandleAnnounce) - adding: frontend as a client (events: 0)
    I don't get autoexpiry of files and no shutdown, both of which I believe are initiated by scheduler.cpp
    I also noticed the following in the logs when auto shutdown does not work:
    2013-04-29 15:40:36.046359 I [648/848] ProcessRequest mainserver.cpp:1385 (HandleAnnounce) - adding: mythbackend as a client (events: 1)
    which does not seem to appear in the logs when auto shutdown works.
    Any ideas ? I have found very little (next to none) regarding scheduler.cpp when searching.

    The other side of the VPN is a TMG server hosted at our main office.  I can connect to it off site, and others were connected to it remotely as well, but for some reason users at that remote site can no longer connect to the VPN.
    I talked to my ISP wondering if there was something that was blocked due to the change from dhcp to static IP addresses, but they don't see anything.

  • Shortcut to SHUTDOWN no longer works

    I used to shut down my computer by punching COMMAND + EJECT, but ever since I updated to OS 10.4.9 yesterday, that feature no longer works. Any thoughts ???

    The ctrl-eject key combination will likely still work if you hold down the Eject key a little longer than before - the 10.4.9 update added a delay to the eject key that affects all key combos involving that key.

    Your profile lists a wireless keyboard - out of curiosity, does this hint to bypass the delay work for you?

  • Scheduled shutdown no longer works in Keynote 4.0 iLife 08

    Those of us using Keynote, a large LED monitor and a Mac Mini as a Digital signage system have found that the new Keynote 4.0 in iLife 08 will not allow a scheduled shutdown. This worked well under the old version.
    We had been on iLife 06 and 10.4.9. We found that Keynote crashes every few days when you try and run a show 24/7 so we had used the energy saver settings to have it shut down at 1AM and restart at 2AM. This was working well, the only trick was to always name the current slide show the same thing and have Keynote auto launch at startup and run the slideshow.
    Last week we reimaged a Mini with 10.4.10 and iLife 08 and put in place of the 10.4.9 ilife 06 mini, the first time it was suppose to shutdown it hung, there was an error on the screen that said "Keynote had canceled shutdown".
    Testing proved the following:
    Schedule shutdown does not work at all when a Keynote presentation is running. You get this error.
    "The application Keynote canceled shutdown. To try again quit Keynote and choose shut down from the Apple menu"
    It will auto shutdown and startup IF a Keynote slide show is NOT running.
    It will do a scheduled shutdown if just the Keynote App is running.
    If the Keynote app is running a normal shutdown command will work.
    Does anyone know a work around or a fix?

    The thread "Keynote Cancelled Shutdown: how do I troubleshoot?" has recently posted a possible solution but is there an explanation or a fix planned?

  • Automatic Sleep no longer working on my Mac Mini :(

    I just noticed my Mac Mini is no more going to auto-sleep as it should.
    What can I try?
    Resetting both SMC and P/VRAM did not solve the issue. I've also cleaned all system and program caches, plus repaired permissions.
    I've searched the forums, and found quite a lot of topics about similar issues. Most were actually about notebooks. A lot of 'go there and delete this' solutions popped out, but I feel insecure to trash entire system folders.
    Anyone can provide me with a safe & complete list of what I have to delete please?

    really? sorry about that.
    I guess that forum is restricted for people with at least two stars.
    Here is a repost of that link.
    My Mac pro doesn't auto-sleep. I've done an extensive search for possible solutions on apple support and elsewhere but nothing seems to cure it.
    I made a little sleep program of my own which I'd like to recommend to anyone with the same problem. It's a very simple shell script that checks system idle time and if it's bigger than the sleep timer you set in system preferences it puts your computer to sleep. It will work so long as you can manually put your computer to sleep from the apple menu.
    You'll also need to create a launch daemon to periodically run the script.
    here are the steps to do it.
    1. copy and paste the following into TextEdit.
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    #!/bin/bash
    idl=$"`ioreg -c IOHIDSystem | awk '/HIDIdleTime/ {print int($NF/1000000000); exit}'`"
    sleeptimer=$"`defaults read /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement "Custom Profile" | grep "System Sleep Timer" | awk '{print $5}' | sed -e 's/;//g'`"
    st=`expr $sleeptimer \* 60`
    if [ $idl -gt $st ]; then
    shutdown -s now
    fi
    </pre>
    2. Format it as *plain text* (shiftcommandT in TextEdit) and save it as sleep.sh (don't use the .txt extension) at the top level of your hard drive. (You can save it elsewhere of course but make sure it's accessible to every user and change the path to the script in the commands below).
    3. make it unix executable by entering the following command in terminal.
    *chmod 755 /sleep.sh*
    4. Download and install Lingon .
    5. Open Lingon and create a new Users Daemon
    Call it,say, com.sleep.launchd (the name is not important)
    On line 2. enter /sleep.sh
    and in section 3 set it to run every 30 seconds (that can be varied).
    Click save (you'll have to enter your admin password).
    6. Restart.
    That's it. Once this is done you can forget about it. The sleep settings are still controlled from system preferences. The sleep agent will work with every user and even over the login window.
    To uninstall it, open Lingon , select the launch daemon you made and uncheck the box "Enabled" in the upper right corner. save and restart.

  • Automatic brightness no longer works with mountain lion

    I have a mid-2010 13" MBP that I upgraded to Mountain Lion via a clean install. Since the upgrade, the automatic brightness feature has stopped working and the laptop's screen brightness no longer responds to changes in ambient light level.
    I've also noticed that I cannot deselect "automatically adjust brightness" in System Preferences – although I can clear the checkbox, as soon as I leave Display Preferences and go back, the box is rechecked. Adjusting the brightness using the slider or F1/F2 works as expected.
    So far, I've tried resetting the SMC and PRAM, and using several combinations of energy and display settings, but no luck.
    Is anyone else having this issue? Any ideas how I might solve it? Thanks.

    Apparently I have the same issue! Also I am unable to change the brightness settings for the keyboard backlight. (see my post about that here) Unfortunately I have yet to find a solution to the problem. I'm currently re-downloading the Mountain Lion install, hopefully a re-install will correct the issue. I'll let you know if I find anything.

  • Automatic CC no longer working

    A while back I put in a code through Terminal so that Mail automatically CCs any outgoing email to a specific email address. Recently emails have been randomly returning as "Mail Delivery Failure" from that specified email address.
    Any help on why this stopped working?
    Is there a command to stop it and then I can start eh automatic CC?
    Thanks for the help

  • All my automatic logins no longer work

    There are various sites where I have always been 'permanently' online - i.e. I never have to login, and each time I activate a link to that site, I'm there. For example, Twitter, Amazon, various hobby or discussion forums, etc.
    The last two or three days, this has all changed - clicking a stored link takes me either to the page I expect to be (but in a 'not logged in' state), or to the site's default login screen. In other words, I have to login EVERYWHERE! (Yes, I always have to re-login to these Apple Discussions after closing the window, but that's always been the case, and I'm not including that in this problem).
    Gradually I am using Autofill (Passwords) to provide me with a one-click solution to this, but better still would be not having to login at all, i.e. revert to my permanently logged in status for those sites where it has always been true.
    I have in the past Reset Safari.., but these days I only choose to Clear Cache and Cookies. Neither of these have ever affected whether automatic logins work, so that's not the cause of this problem.
    Any idea why this has happened? What can I do to cure it?

    Hi,
    Quit Safari.
    Open Keychain Access (Applications/Utilities) Select Passwords on the left.
    Delete all the keychains for the sites you mentioned.
    Relaunch Safari. From the menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Autofill tab. Make sure *User names and passwords* is selected.
    Navigate to a site. Type in your user name and password. You will be prompted to save that data to a new keychain. Next time you re visit that site, it should "autofill" for you.
    If that didn't help, open a Finder window. Select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left. Open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
    Move the com.apple.keychainaccess.plist file to the Trash. Restart your Mac. Launch Safari and try logging in to a site again.

  • External microphone no longer works; did before with this MBP.

    Yes, I've read* about how Macs have line-level inputs, not mic-level in several threads while trying to solve my problem.  But the thing is, it used to work.
    The same headset (unpowered microphone) used to work just fine.  Was there once a 'boost' checkbox in System Prefs...Sound, where now there's just an input volume slider?
    I guess my memory could be wrong, or I was using the internal mike, but I'm pretty **** sure it worked with my MacBookPro4,1, and I tested to be sure I wasn't using the internal mike.

  • Computed page item no longer working after upgrade to 1.6

    Hi team,
    I noticed that the pages where I was using conditional computations based on sql queries for setting the value of items are no longer working as before.
    If I run the page in debug mode however I see that the computation is actually performed and the correct value is retrieved indeed. The value is also present in the session window.
    This values are used inside chart region titles, but for some reason they do not show up.
    Are you aware of any known problems?
    In case you want to check, the application is 21670, page item is P64_CATEGORY_NAME (page 64, of course) and it is recalled inside the chart region's title.
    Thanks,
    Flavio

    Flavio,
    I think it's working now. The source type of the item was 'Always..' and the source was 'Always null'. Changed to 'Only..' and 'Static Assignment'. The computations are working right, as you said. It was just that the item's current value (in the memory arrays) was null and that's what was used in the &ITEM. substitution.

    Hi recently I updated to Build 9926 and since then Wake On LAN WOL no longer works! Before the update, everything was ok.
    Is this a known issue?
    Thanks
    I presume it is caused by booting process.
    After updating to Build 9926 from the older Build, two entries have been created in bootloader, i.e. there exist Windows Technical Preview and Windows Rollback. (see picture)
    Even if WOL sends magic packets to PC that is powered off, these packets does not reach Windows, since Windows does not run yet at that time.
    In order for WOL to work when PC is powered off, I think "Windows Rollback" entry should be deleted.
    Sorry I have not done it yet, and hope someone give us better information.

  • 10.5.7: Automatic Software Update Feature No Longer Works

    Ever since I installed 10.5.7 the automatic Software Update feature no longer works. (Manual updates work fine.) For example, here's what happened today with Safari 4.0.2:
    1. After powering up I got the Software Update icon on the Dock.
    2. I clicked it and it said I had updates that would require a reboot and it asked the usual stuff. (It didn't say what would update.)
    3. I clicked to reboot now and it asked for my password and rebooted.
    4. My MacBook rebooted but nothing had been updated.
    So, I went to the Apple menu to check for updates and it said I had Safari 4.0.2 ready to be installed. This time, it worked. Unfortunately, I have to do this two-step process on every update that requires a reboot. I could turn off the automatic updates and just do everything manually but I prefer the automatic way. (I had it before, too.)
    Thanks in adavance,
    Brian

  • Automatic sleep/shutdown does not work.

    I work for Micro Center's Apple Department, and we have 12 Macs on display. To aid with shutting down our store, each computer is set to automatic shutdown or sleep. When the dialog box opens "This Mac will shut down in 60 seconds," the counter does not go down, and the computer stays on indefinitely. This happens with all of our Macs. With 10.5 Leopard, this did not happen. Since upgrading to 10.6, this has ceased to function, including each sequential update.
    My theory is it has something to do with the Guest Account, though this is not likely since we've had it this way before in 10.5 and it worked fine.
    Any thoughts?

    Ha! No answer to your question. I have the same problem. Computer simply doesn't go int sleep mode as set in the energy saving prefs. Seems to be a real bug! Why does Apple not react?

    You can never, never migrate an installed copy of PSE. It's just too complex and you can't get to all the bits and bobs.
    First you will have to download and run this:
    Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
    which will not seem to do anything, but is necessary to break the links within PSE so that you can pitch the bits manually. Then you will have to go around, not only to applications, but also to your username>library>preferences and most importantly to the library at the top level of your hard drive>application support>adobe, and remove everything you can find. Spotlight will not help with this kind of search, so don't try that.
    Then you can install PSE from scratch.
