Automatic Start Actions for a Virtual Machine

Hi ,
We configure some VMs on a cluster
the default setting of automatic Start action is set to Nothing
when the cluster is down of hyper-v service is stopped  , once the problem is solved , All VM will be run as it was running before the problem happened
So What is different between the following options of automatic Start action
Nothing
Automatically start if it was running when the service is stopped
And do you know why it is st for standalone Host not for the cluster as per this thread

FYI - Automatic Start Actions in the settings of a VM are different once the VM is HA under Clustering.  Since the job of Clustering and HA is to keep that VM running.
If you look here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732181(v=WS.10).aspx#BKMK_Machine
You find this:
Automatic actions let you automatically manage the state of the virtual machine when the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service starts or stops. However, when you make a virtual machine highly available, the management of virtual machine state should
be controlled through the Cluster service. In this step, you reconfigure the automatic start action for the virtual machine.

  • VMM 2012: How to Configure Automatic Start and Stop Actions for a Virtual Machine?

Does somebody know how to confgure Automatic Start and Stop Actions for a Virtual Machine in VMM 2012?
    I miss that option.

Automatic Start or Automatic Restart actions are available for virtual machines running on a Hyper-V cluster from within Virtual Machine Manager.
From within Virtual Machine Manager, bring up the Virtual Machine's properties:
    Click "Hardware Configuration"
    Click "Availability"
Click "High", "Medium", or "Low" to enable automatic start/restart or
Click "Do not restart automatically" to disable automatic start/restart
Screenshot from VMM 2012 for a VM running in a Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster:
VMs running on a cluster have to be marked "Highly Available" and logically, Microsoft assumes that you'll want these VMs to be running all the time when this setting is selected.  If the cluster fails or needs to be restarted, you can set the priority
by which a VM restarts, or you can set the VM to not restart at all when cluster services are restored by using the settings above.

  • Hypev "automatic start action" not retained after live motion

    Hi,
    We have a hyper-v cluster of 2 windows 2008 R2SP1 nodes.
We found that the settings we made in the VMs "automatic start action" were reset to "none" after migration between the nodes .
We need to have it maintaned
    thanks
    Stefano

    Hi ,
I think there may be something unclear in my previous email. Ok, I will detail it.
If you make a virtual machine high available, the Automatic Start Action will not work after you perform a live migration. Which means the following setting will not be "failovered" to another host.
You should set this via the Cluster Manager by the following setting:
    This is what I said:
If you change the configuration of a virtual machine, we recommend that you use the Failover Cluster Manager snap-in to access the virtual machine settings. When you do this, the cluster is updated automatically with the configuration changes. However, if
you make changes to the virtual machine settings from the Hyper-V Manager snap-in, you must update the cluster manually after you make the changes. If the configuration is not refreshed after networking or storage changes are made, a subsequent failover may
not succeed or may succeed but result in the virtual machine being configured incorrectly.
Thanks. Feel free to let me know if anything is unclear.

    Hi Aaron ,
yes I think there's a misunderstanding about the question .
    When you say
"If you make a virtual machine high available, the Automatic Start Action will not work after you perform a live migration. Which means the following setting will not be "failovered" to another host."
you mean that it is supposed to work this way ?
I mean , If you make a VM HA with clustering is it an accepted behaviour that the setting of " automatic start action " ( not the stop action you posted the picture of ) is not maintaned after a live migration even if such setting is made through the failover
    cluster manager ?
If you are telling me that this is what it is supposed to work I don't agree , because I wish I can have a way to set a priority in VM startup in the case of complete shutdown/reboot .
Working with vsphere as well this is possible and I thought it was the same with Hyper-v
To solve this problem I had to create a group policy's startup script for the cluster nodes in which I start the VM in the correct order with some timeout .
    Thanks

  • Problems with Disc Permissions for Java Virtual Machine

    hi,
My machine (10.6.6) crashed. I had the spinning beach ball.
Force Quit and On/Off did nothing.
I needed to unplug and remove the battery to restart.
After that, I did Repair Disk Permissions.
It finds a bunch of things for Java Virtual Machine/1.6.0/jdk
    It says it fixes it.
But if I reboot and and run Repair Disk Permissions again,
it still finds the same problems.
How do I get it fixed?

    Hi,
these permission errors are normal. There's nothing to be worried about. If you search around (you did search around first, right?) you'll find that most, if not all, Snow Leopard users see these messages.

  • Can I assign several physical storage locations for each virtual machine when using the replication-feature from Hyper-V 2012 R2?

    Hi everyone,
I have 2x physical servers running Hyper-V 2012 R2. Each hosts several virtual machines. The VHDs of the VMs are stored on several dedicated physical disks to have a performance boost. For exampe if VM A has two VHDs attached I made sure that the VHDs are
on different physical disks to have them not slow-down each other in case of intensive disk accesses.
So far so good. I was looking forward to the replication-feature. The idea is to have the two physical servers have their primary running VMs being replicated to the other physical server and vice-versa. I was hoping to have the chance to choose for each
individual VM where the replicated VHD will be stored. But instead I can only see the one location/path which is configured in Hyper-V Manager when I activate the replication-feature on the server.
Is there by any chance a way how to select the storage location for each VHD/VM if using the replication-feature of Hyper-V 2012 R2?
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    Sebastian

Secondly, you could replicate different VMs to different storage locations to perform some of the disk balancing you are trying to perform.  Lastly, you could copy the vhd file to a different location
    before starting the VM.

    Hi Tim,
thanks for the reply. Sorry, but I had some other tasks to take care of, so I wasn't paying enough attention to this thread.
The part I quoted from your reply sounds exactly like the action I'd like to perform, but as you pointed out before this should not be possible.
How can I perform the action (replicating each VM to a storage location) as you mentioned secondly? To sum it up again:
2x physical machines carrying severel HDDs
8+ VMs spread to run on the 2x servers
when setting up replication I can only set the storage-location from server A on B and vice versa B on A
    Thanks again for your reply.
    Cheers,

  • Can I install Linux and then use the original Windows 8 OEM product key for a virtual machine on the same computer?

I have ordered a new laptop and expect to receive it in 2-3 weeks.  The laptop comes with an OEM version of Windows 8 installed.  I wish
to install Linux as the host operating system and create a virtual machine running Windows 8.  Can I legally use the product key from the OEM installation to activate a virtual machine that will only be used on the laptop that had the original OEM installation?
If so, what is the procedure to activate the copy installed on the virtual machine?
This question has been addressed for Windows 7, but my searches did not reveal this question posed for Windows 8.

Technically, no.  The OEM is licensed only for the physical hardware on the system.  It isn't licensed for virtual hardware.
You may find you're unable to activate your OEM license in the VM.  A lot of OEM Windows look for specific hardware to verify they're being installed on the correct hardware.
    Although here: http://www.microsoft.com/oem/en/Pages/support-faq.aspx#fbid=Zh0SiBdas5I
    Q. Can I install OEM on a virtual machine (VMware)?
    A. You may install OEM in a virtual environment as long as you have a separate license for each instance of the software. It is fine to use the OEM version as long as it is properly licensed. To be clear, a separate version of software must be installed
for both the “standard” and “virtual” installations.
You still may not be able to activate if there is a hardware block.
The best place to ask this is to Microsoft licensing, any response you get here, including mine, won't hold up since it's not an official answer.

  • Find datastore for orphaned virtual machines

    Hi
One person in our organization unregistered virtual machine but didnt delete it from disk. Now we dont know where vmdk files are residing and they are definitely taking up space
Is there any one liner on powercli where we can search for vmdk meaning datastore where these virtual machine files are stored. Or probably they could be orphaned since these files do exist but vm is no longer register with vCenter

  • Automate an action for tall and wide web images

Can you automate an action to make a web image a certain size whether it's wide or tall? If it's a wide image and I want it 850 pixels isn't a problem but, if it's a tall image and it makes it 850 pixels wide the image gets huge. I need an action to check to see if it's height is bigger than it's width and if so make the height 642 pixels and the auto fill the width and if the image is wider than it is tall, make the width 850 pixels and auto fill the height. I have over 20,000 images I need to convert over for our new web site so if I can automate this it would be a big relief.
    Thanks,
    Mark

Use the image processor script (under File > Scripts). You'll also need to create a new action which makes the canvas 850 by 850 (with the anchor in the middle) -- choosing your desired canvas extension color. Then just run the image processor script resizing to fit 850 and 850, and be sure to call your newly recorded action to fill out the canvas.
On re-reading your post it looks like you just need to run the image processor script (if you're not looking to fill out the canvases to have images all 850 x 850).

  • Time synchronization for SharePoint virtual machine

    Hi everyone,
As a best pratice, i read in a technet article : "Disable time synchronization for each SharePoint virtual machine".
Do i need to disable the Integration Service "Time Syncronization" in the virtual machine settings ?
Is it better to do a NTP sync on each serveur ? (Virtual and physical machine)
Thanks in advance for your reply,
    Sincerly,
    Anthony Picot

    Hi Anthony,
yes, you should disable the Integration Services Time Sync per VM Settings, as this can lead to problems with the SharePoint timer service and yes, you can do an NTP Sync instead.

  • 32bit graphics mode for Guest virtual machine

    Hi,
Working in a project I got a question that I was unable to answer myself, so I turn to the experts :)
We have an environment running with Hyper-V 2012R2 and guest that run Windows 2008R2.
Google earth has to run inside the Guest vm to be accessed via Citrix XenApp.
Google Earth requests a 32bit graphics mode to be installed.
    So far no harm done.
What we noted was that we only could select 16bits graphic modes in the guest vm, running Windows 2008 R2.
The question is simple yet I can't find the answer, is it possible to have 32bit graphic mode options in a guest vm running 2008R2 with Hyper-V 2012R2?
hope you can shed a light on this
I've included the screenhot so you see it only shows 16bit modes.
    Thanks for the help
    Greetings

  • Custom Domain name for Azure virtual machine using azure websites

Hie, I am using a cloud service (e.g cloud1) and it has a hosted VM in it (Windows server 2012). It is having a URL cloud1.cloudapp.net. So I want to use the domain name (e.g azuresite1.azurewebsites.net)created from azure.
So how do I add the Cname record and everything in this setup .
      I already tried to use
    this but that didn't work
What additional steps are required to add custom domain name to an azure virtual machine and, the custom domain name is also an azure website

If you want to use azuresite1.zurewebsites.net then i think, you have to create a azurewebsite. If you have a custom domain then following should work.
You have findout the IP that is attached to the VM.
Point your domain name to that IP (using domain dashboard)
Now your domain points to whatever the site hosted on the VM (port 80)
If you have more sites then, you have specify HostName for the site which you want to use with domain name.
Try and let me know if this helped.

  • Automatic start workflow for ALL records

    Hi Experts,
Does anyone know a way to start workflow automatically for ALL records without human interference?
I want to start workflows every day. For instance to recalculate, re-validate, re-assign or syndicate ALL records of a table.
    Kind regards,
    Job Jansen

    Hello Job Jansen
I suppose recalculate and validate all recodrs once a day don't make sense when that records is the same
    and records wasn't changing
However, you can use Autolaunch = Threshold with Max Time = 24 hour(for example)
workflow will fire when Max Time say greater then time last launched job.
    And few another ways:
    1) you can use task sheduler for launch import manager and turn autolaunch workflow when it do import
    2) turn automatic import process(MDIS) once a day and use workflow for add records
    3) developed Java application which used MDM JAVA API for start workflow

  • Site to Azure replication - always get errors when trying to enable protection for a virtual machine

I just setup my Azure account with Storage and Azure Site Recovery.
All the servers are registered and I can see my host server configurations in Azure.
But as soon as I can try to Enable Protection, after about 10 minutes I always get this error
Unable to complete the request. Operation on the xxx.xxx.local server timed out.
Try the operation again. (Provider error code: 2924)
(But the way the xxx.xxx.local server is the name of the underlying Hyper-V host running SCVMM and my test machine to be protected. Is that the right machine Azure should be communicating with?)
This happens if I initiate the protection from Azure or from SCVMM.
The server I want to enable protection for is quite small and there appears to be no problem with my Internet connection.
    Prerequisites check
    Identifying replication target work okay
And after the failure, Updating Provider states also completes okay
Would folks have an idea where else I could be looking?
    Thanks

Hi, can you please check if network proxy settings configured in the Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent are correct. This agent running on the Hyper-V host needs to be able to reach Azure. (You can find more details about this here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/virtualization/archive/2014/07/07/azure-site-recovery-authenticated-proxy-server.aspx)
If that is correct, please look at event logs at “Applications and Services Logs->MicrosoftAzureRecoveryServices->Replication” and
traces at a location like C:\Program Files\Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent\Temp.
